I am a retired nurse from santa clara valley medical center. I worked their 37 years. I have a wide knowledge base of medicine. I am taking care of a 59 year old gentleman who is 11 months post stroke and was referred to Dr. Johnson. I have looked at the reviews especially the complaints. #1He is extremely knowledgeable by my standards. #2 When I have been in the office it was extremely busy because this is a group of Cardiac Specialists. #3. Yes We had to wait a long time to be seen. I am sorry all you people don't like to wait. You gave no thought to all the time he spends with his patients, and the time he takes to explain things in plain english and easy to understand. #4. He takes all the time he needs with each and every patient according to each individual patients needs for why they are being seen. This means he is most likely late for getting to the next scheduled patient. That time multiplies as the day goes on creating the long wait for everyone. #5. He has a full service office, meaning you do not have to go somewhere else for a cardiac stress stess, a halter monitor placement or other needed tests. His office provides these services in the office. #6 You people wine about the staff and have no idea how much they juggle trying to execute and book all the appointments for all the patients on any given day. Add in answering the phone, making copies for patients of their records, confirming appointments. Yes mistakes can be made. Think about it, could you do that job? #7 Did you pay attention when the office staff gave you a place holding appointment because they were booked up and would call you and confirm your appointment if they got a cancelation. Did you call or get a conformation of your appointment? #8 You are not their only patient, the cardiologists are on call to the emergency room. Believe it or not emergencies are more important than your appointment. #9 in regards to the person who was given diuretics' and ended up back in the emergency room, they did not listen to what the physician explained to them. Diaretic dosage is calibrated according to the amount of fluid you need to get rid of. If you have so much fluid on board in your body that it is effecting how your heart is working then you have a ton of fluid on board. As far as being dehydrated, that was your fault. You were not drinking enough fluids. Taking diaretics means you have to drink even more fluids so you don't get dehydrated. It just may be you are not a water drinker to begin with. You can't blame a physician for that. I was impressed with Dr. Johnson and I am knowledgeable enough to know what poor care looks like. The care he provides his patients is way above the normal standard. read more

Dr. Johnson's schedule does not equate to the amount of patients he can actually handle. Every single I have been there, I have waited anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours past my appointment time. Then they tell me I can reschedule when I complain. What would rescheduling do? I'd still have to wait again, potentially even longer. He really needs to understand what he is capable of doing in the time allotment and schedule accordingly. It makes absolutely no sense. read more

Jay Johnson is a caring and good doctor. This review has nothing to do with him. I am addressing his office staff they are not good. I was in the office and got my yearly echo done. I had appointment with the doctor just after the test. He was called to the hospital and my appointment was cancelled. No problem, reschedules for a few weeks later. They gave me a card for the appointment and that is the date I entered in my phone calendar. I get to the appointment only to find he is off that day. Now I can't get anyone to answer the phone to refill my prescription that is necessary for me. I have a congenital heart defect and the meds control issues that arise from the condition. Office staff is rude and uncaring when you go there. Also, there was a problem with a change of my insurance and they were quick to call and basically threaten me if I didn't pay a certain amount right then. My insurance had changed and I handed them the wrong card. My insurance more than covered the test like it's done my entire life. I sat in the office for an hour waiting for my appointment and nobody took the time to ask me about the correct card while I was there. I had the correct card with me I just handed them the wrong one. Again this has nothing to do with Jay Johnson's. He is a nice person. The office staff is unorganized and not paying attention to detail. read more

I've been with Dr. Johnson for over five years now. Generally a good doctor, but ALWAYS late. Over the last year, twice he's been called away to an emergency at the hospital next door when I was in the waiting room, so I had to reschedule. I understand that, but it's still a hassle coming from Watsonville (I'm 80). The fixable problem is his tardiness. It's normal for him to be 45 to 60 minutes late. The last time I was there, the office and the waiting area by the elevator were both packed. I spoke briefly with the office manager about the wait, and how it must be hard having a waiting room full of angry patients, and she said "I've just been here a short time, and I'm doing the best I can.", but she's obviously not happy with the situation. Also, as with other reviewers' experience, Johnson did a sloppy job with handling my wife's transition from Stanford after her stroke. For example, he didn't continue her afib prescriptions without prodding. Also, since he doesn't do virtual meetings or use the Dominican portal, the only way to get him a message is through the medical assistant. read more

Had an appt on the books that was made 4 weeks in advance, got to appt only to find dignity health no longer is contracted with Anthem, and was told my insurance was no longer good there. Staff was rude and condescending to me. they never called me before appt to tell me this. They said oops we thought we called everyone. Dignity health is a joke a money hungry conglomerate that only cares about money, not people who are in dire need of getting care. I have never been treated so badly at a medical facility. The people that work for Dr Johnson are not nice, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I hope they can live with the fact that I waited so long for this appt , that when I made it they took my insurance but on the appt date they no longer would honor this, I also hope when my heart gives out before I can find another dr to see me and I die, that they can live with this too. read more

For many years Jay Johnson was my trusted cardiologist. Though it was always unpleasant and inconvenient, over the years I mostly made peace with his CHRONIC LATENESS (usually at least an hour, sometimes more). However, our last encounter, or lack thereof, ended the relationship when I left feeling completely disrespected. I arrived on time. There was no one ahead of me. I saw Dr. Johnson and thought ,"Wow! He's going to be on time for the first time ever with me." Wrong. After sitting in the exam room for 45 minutes, his nurse returned to tell me that he had actually left the building to go eat lunch. She had let him know I was there, so he should be back soon. At the one hour mark, I walked out saying that I felt totally disrespected, and, as a working woman, I also had a schedule to honor. That kind of disregard, disrespect, for a patient is unacceptable. read more

Met this doctor in the ER. Right away he was diligent in communicating with my EP at Stanford. He saved my life. I will say though, despite saving my life, he said somethings that left me with PTSD that were uncalled for ("If we can't figure out what is going and get you to Stanford, we may have to put you into a coma"). Unfortunately, his office and him are unreachable. I've left numerous messages and they never got back to me when I was in the ER a second time. read more

From the start, I found Dr. Johnson to be straight forward and caring with me. His explanations of my condition were easy to understand. He goes far beyond what we normally expect as service from a cardiologist. I had an appointment with him in February where I was complaining that I had had 2 cat scans done by another doctor to assess reasons for impaired kidney function. I had been waiting for almost 3 weeks to hear anything about the results of the scans. I told Dr. Johnson that I was worried and the other doctor was not available every time I tried to contact the office. Dr. Johnson immediately pulled up my Dignity file and was able to review the scans. It appeared that I had a mass on my pancreas. Dr Johnson immediately scheduled me with the only GI specialist in Santa Cruz who could perform an endoscopy for me. That doctor was a Sutter/Stanford doctor. Dr. Johnson personally got the approval for me to have the Endoscopy procedure performed within 2 days. The results of that test confirmed the suspicions of the doctors. I have pancreatic cancer. Now I will have to fight with my insurance company to send me to Stanford (32 miles from home) rather than UCSF (92 miles from home and family). If not for Dr. Johnson seeing the mass on my early cat scan, I have no way of knowing how long this cancer would have had to grow and threaten my life. I owe my life to Dr. Johnson. read more

My mom has been recovering from a surgery that had complications. She has been noticing irregularities in her blood pressure, as a precaution she made an appointment with Jay Johnson. After waiting an hour past her appointment time she finally was able to see the doctor. Almost immediately he went on a 5 minute long yelling session that made her cry. For what? For being worried about her health and going to see a doctor? I fear for how many other patients he has done this to. Jay should not be left alone with the elderly. I'm amazed he has been around for so long with his lack of compassion and inability to empathize with his patients. Jay Johnson, you should be ashamed of your behavior. read more

This MD prescribed a drug for husband's atrial fibrillation and handed the Rx to him to be filled at a local pharmacy. Upon examination of the medication, the insert noted that a 72 hour continuous EKG is required at the onset of giving this medication due to the risk of serious, life threatening cardiac arrhythmias. This was several years ago. In addition, he later ordered a thallium cardiac stress test. Upon reviewing the guidelines for stress tests from an excellent medical source, Uptodate, it was obvious there was no need for this test. Also, thallium is a cancer causing agent and there is no reason to get exposed for an unnecessary test. It's too bad there are not legitimate reviews for many doctors out there. Luckily, our insurance changed and we were able to switch doctors. read more

This doctor has a real problem with telling his patients the truth about their conditions and diagnoses. How do I know? He gives me two very thorough tests, tells me everything is just great, no worries, like I'm some kind of little kid, then, as I am leaving, I notice he's circled several diagnosis codes (ICD-9 coding) including LVH and mitral insufficiency. If you know anything about cardiology, you would think your physician would want to discuss these conditions and let you know what to watch for in the future, and so forth. Dr Johnson did NOT do that. True, he is very sweet and kind... But I also witnessed how he deals with patients who have a complaint or issue... Very haughty, it was "not his problem" that his office could find his archived test results from 8 months ago... Etc. As for the way the office is run, it's a complete disaster, bordering on chaos. They asked me to fax my insurance info before firming up my scheduled test (an expensive and time consuming in-office test). I did so, and printed out my fax log showing the successful transmission and put it in my file ( I get anal about medical paperwork, been burned too many times by idiots in the office staff ranks). So when I show up, they say they never got my fax. I showed Anita the fax log and asked "is that your fax number" and she indeed acknowledged it was... And at that point I told her that losing faxes with HIPAA info was unacceptable. the next problem I encountered is the horrible scheduling of appointments. I had two appointments with dr Johnson just to review test results, ands in both cases I was left waiting for TWO HOURS. In one of these cases, the appointment was at 10:15 am so you'd think things could not be backed up that much. On a different occasion, I came in for a scheduled echocardiogram procedure, and they had called me to confirm, and when I arrived, they said they couldn't find me on the schedule but "fortunately there seems to be an opening right now" so they were able to "squeeze me in" If I were you, I would avoid this place like the plague... You will waste your whole day waiting for y our appointment, only to have the doctor not even tell you honestly what is going on with your heart. No thank you, Dr Johnson, Anita, and the rest of you incompetents on the office staff. The only bright spot? The test technicians are actually very competent and efficient, once you actually get to see them! read more

May I start out by saying this review is NOT for Dr. Johnson. He gets 50 stars, it's for his front office. I have had to interface with them 4-5 times on the phone and every time they were, short and rude. Not what you'd expect after dealing with the Doc, who is one of a dying breed of caring, personable awesome physicians. I want to be clear, all of my negative experiences were on the phone, I only visited the office once and everything was fine, the review is specific to their performance on the telephone. So, if you need a Cardiologist who you will feel comfortable and confident by all means make the appointment. Whatever you do, do not let the ice cold, cut-you-off before you can finish your sentence impersonal should be happy they have a job horrors keep you away. Again, I would recommend Dr. Johnson in a heartbeat (pun intended)! read more

Dr. Johnson has been treating me regularly since I had a stent placed in 2009. He is an articulate, intelligent and clear communicator. His management plan for my condition has been a comprehensive program of both medication and monitoring that nicely balances benefits and side effects. In addition, he keeps up with the latest developments in the field and has not been afraid to try different things as new information becomes available. Over the years he has become a true partner in managing this chronic condition. I highly recommend him. I agree the office is very busy and front of house staff interaction can be hit or miss. But in general they do a fairly good job of moving the large volume of patients through and the time spent with the Doctor is always excellent and never rushed. read more

Jay Johnson is a terrific cardiologist and a lovely man. But his practice stinks! The waits are interminable -- often an hour -- and there's no excuse. If he gets called away for an emergency, they should let the patients know that he's going to be late. Otherwise, run a better office. read more

Dr Johnson is kind, caring and thoughtful with his patients. He treated my mother in Dec. 2009 for a blockage in her heart. Her doctor failed to find the blockage using the routine tests that normally discover these type of conditions. She came to Dr Johnson for a second opinion. He was willing to think beyond the standard procedures and recognized the symptoms for what they were, a serious and potentially life threatening condition. Doctor Johnson is a truly kind person.

My regular doctor is Dr. Singh who is highly competent, compassionate and great all around. He was on vacation and Dr. Johnson was on call. His response to my situation (I was having an episode of a particular condition) was to contradict Dr. Singh's diagnoses, to the point of argument; to prescribe an amount of medication directly contradicting Dr. Singh's recommendation "take as much nitro as you need it won't hurt you" ; to suggest I go for a walk to see if the condition got worse -- if so then go to the ER. He didn't bother to ask if I was with anyone -- I was alone. Finally he was distracted and talking to others while talking to me and complained about how busy he was. Clearly he knew nothing of my condition (nor did he bother to inquire/or look at the file -- it was during working hours). I would never allow this doctor to touch me. His behavior was unprofessional and unsafe! read more

I saw Dr. Johnson in the hospital without having to first see him in his office. I was so grateful that he allowed this accommodation as I was in a hurry to get him to clear me for a knee surgery. I needed a drug-induced heart stress test, because I can't walk well due to a knee issue, and I also have some risk that I will seize, soI needed to have the test in the hospital. I previously dealt with his office people over the phone and was absolutely horrified by them. They are easily the rudest people I have ever spoken to in a doctor's office -- at least over the phone. When I met Dr. Johnson in the hospital, I was in shock! He was the absolute antithesis of his office staff. I have no idea why they are still there. Do not hesitate to see Dr. Johnson, however, just be prepared for the worst possible treatment by his staff. He is kind, focuses on what you say, attempts to address your concerns, seems highly competent, and I would never hesitate to go back to him. read more
