I've seen many shows. Simply put, this was the best show I've ever seen. It packs an emotional punch. It had me laughing. Clapping in ways I have only clapped at rock concerts. Jay is a master magician. Mentalist. And when you watch him, he feels like a friend. The audience was multicultural with ages that appeared to be from 12 to at least 85. We were unified in our joy and engrossment. Everything was utterly remarkable from the meal before the show, to the beautiful and intimate venue, and of course, the great Jay Alexander. This show is so much fun! Upon entering the theater the staff are so welcoming, and Jay greeted us himself once we were in the lobby. Arrive 30 minutes before the show start time to enjoy some close up magic in the lounge. You can also order a drink too and bring that into the theater with you. The close-up card tricks in the lounge was a lot of fun, and Jay engaged the guests into each trick! At the start-time you will then be led into the theater, which is more of a small shoebox theater experience. Every seat has a good view. Jay really got the audience involved, and almost everyone got to participate somehow in a trick, which was very cool! Truly blew me away with every magic trick throughout the evening. As for getting to the theater, I suggest taking BART, or uber/lyft. The theater is located on O'Farrell St in San Francisco, around a few hotels and bars/restaurants. Parking would likely be street parking only or a public garage somewhere near by. Overall a really good experience, highly recommend! read more

Cool magic however my experience wasn't so good. Jay greeted me and showed me a card trick and got visibly annoyed when I held the card wrong. Jay then called me up and I was extremely nervous to go up in front of everyone I had a panic attack on stage and then he decided to laugh at how I was talking and was making a joke at my expense while everyone laughed it was extremely mean and felt targeted towards me. We went to the show last night and had such a fun time! We are two couples (three out of four of us were born and raised in the Bay Area), but none of us had ever seen Jay Alexander before. But I made a solid "mind trick" prediction myself before we went to the show...I'd told my female friend that our spouses would both be desperately trying to figure out how the tricks worked. Let me preface this review that I've never been gung-ho about magic, but also have nothing against it. We happened to see this place a little over a year ago when driving to another show and thought it seemed interesting. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews, we knew we had to check it out. Let's get into it... Ambiance - The Marrakesh Theater is a pretty cozy establishment overall. I'd say it maybe holds around 50-60 people tops. When doors first open, you have the chance to get food/drinks and prior to the show Jay will come out and do some magic tricks to get people warmed up. Show - I would highly suggest not missing the pre-show as it's just as entertaining as his regular show. He did some really cool card tricks and mentalist tricks which were pretty incredible to see first hand. Jay is quite funny and personable so it was a great time. The show itself is incredible too. He did some tricks that were pretty jaw-dropping to me. I don't want to spoil anything, so you just have to go see for yourself. Overall, I'm extremely glad we went to the show and would definitely go back again. Truly dazzled by this show! I consider myself something of a magic nerd and I gotta say, this is some of the best magic I've seen in a long, long time. The tricks themselves were smart, elegant and impressive. Jay seamlessly wove mentalism, sleight of hand, close up illusions and humor with expert confidence that somehow never tipped over into smug cheesiness that sometimes give magicians a bad rap. He clearly loves his craft and has mastered it. The space itself is transportive, Moroccan-themed and papered with vintage magic posters (plus a couple featuring my personal fave, Doug Henning) It's super-intimate, so nearly everyone gets to participate and feel like you're collectively part of the show. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes early to grab a cocktail/appetizer and bond with your fellow audience members while Jay walks around wowing everyone with close-up table magic. It's all terribly good-natured. Everyone was grinning ear to ear. I have now seen Jay Alexander twice with my family and collectively we say "WOW"!! His show is jaw- dropping aw, head scratching amazement with a few pinch myself is this real moments. In our day and age, not much is left to our imagination or wonder, Jay is one of those simply amazing humans that lights up that space. When we arrived, we felt transported to Marrakesh. The walls, fixtures and the "jewel box" theater where the magic takes place is beautiful. We sat in a salon like space where we ordered some dinner specials and apps. All guests arrived there and were wowed by Jay's hospitality and card tricks. This ice breaker made the show feel intimate as we all experienced the awe. Jay is an accomplished mentalist and student of human behavior. My wife and I and two friends attended his show two weeks ago, and he was astonishing. You are guaranteed to be amazed, both in the moment and afterward, when you're trying to reconstruct and figure out how he did that crazy-complicated thing--which might be (apparently?) reading your mind, making objects disappear or move around, revealing the contents of notes or boxes he could not possibly have opened or created before the show, etc. Jay performs in a small, intimate venue for a reason--everyone has a close look at every move he makes, further confounding everyone. Jay's charm and quick wit, along with his engaging story-telling, make each show unique. We definitely plan to go again, and in fact, we think taking out-of-town guests (or in-town guests) for an evening at the Marrakech Magic Theater will create a joyful memory for all! read more

What a fun evening! Great show, and the very small (under 50 people) theatre setting, with the pre-show in the lounge, is really special. Jay is unbelievably talented and hardworking, and we've been thinking and talking about the show for days! Came with my husband and our 8 year old, whose curiosity has been piqued about magic. There were a few other kids there my child's age, and all of them seemed to understand and enjoy the show, and participate in some parts. This is a wonderful outing if you have out-of-town guests, in-laws, a company retreat, etc.--any event where you want a diverse group of people with different interests to have a great time together and have a unique experience to remember and discuss afterwards. My wife surprised my daughters and I with a bday gift to see Jay last night, and we had an incredible time....I had no idea this gem of a show was in downtown SF. as others have mentioned Jay is a great story teller, the venue is really intimate and it's nice that everyone got to interact / participate with him as the show went on. My daughter said she preferred Jay's show to the Shim Lim show in Vegas! We got there early and got some food and drinks which we enjoyed, the staff was super friendly. And Jay did a round of close up magic tricks while we ate, and did one with the entire group just before we went in to the show which we were blown away by. such a fun night was smiling ear to ear as we left. definitely plan on taking other friends here when they visit! great show. read more

I've been to quite a few magic shows, including 2 in Vegas (Shin Lim and Paranormal). Jay Alexander is still by far my favorite magic experience ever. It's in an intimate theater that feels like a hidden speakeasy, and basically everyone in the audience gets to be part of a trick at some point. Plus if you show up early or stay late, he'll do close-up tricks for you in the lobby that are just as mind-blowing. Some of his "tricks" are simply incredible acts of mental math, psychology, or memorization. Others are more traditional magic tricks, but I still have no idea how he does most of them. This is one of SF's best hidden gems, definitely worth seeing once if you're just visiting, and worth seeing multiple times if you can! read more

Just saw him tonight- absolutely wonderful as a showman and storyteller. This is a great night for everyone, including those who don't believe in magic and tricks ;). It's an intimate setting, as well - perfect for friends, families, date nights, etc. Jay, and the staff there, is just incredibly nice. I was in San Francisco with my father and brother for a few days. Without question, this was the highlight of our trip. From the moment we entered the theater, we knew that we were in for something special. Without exaggeration, the evening was like nothing I've ever experienced! Jay Alexander certainly has a presence and unbelievable talent. But he's completely approachable, too: Jay is as friendly, inviting, humble, and down-to-earth as anyone you'll ever meet. After one evening, I feel like I know him well enough to refer to him by his first name in this review! The experience is an intimate one: To say that there is audience participation doesn't do it justice. Over the course of the show, Jay develops a connection between himself and the audience, as all great performers do. But he takes this much further and effectively builds a community *among* the audience members for the evening. While I'm dying to walk through the entire act in this review, spoilers are obviously not cool. =) Suffice to say that I have NO idea how he did ANY of his magic, and each illusions was more amazing than the last. Very close to Union square and I would say it's one of the last live show in San Francisco. Jay is a showman with many impressive magic and mentalist tricks and humor. I can't really explain it, it's not the typical 'magic show', I think the best word to describe the experience is, it left me dumbfounded. The theater is intimate which lends to the experience.
