(I want to give 1 star, but 1 star reviews are reserved for terrible experiences; bad does not equal terrible). I came in for the obvious reasons. work injury. everything sounded good upfront. they worked on a pure contingency (as many workman's comp lawyers do). i was promised a payout (a large one) that they would take a cut from. ok. after i signed their paperwork, i tried to get clarification about how we'd be communicating (by phone, email? It's reasonable that I'd have questions during the process). No answers were given to me abt the communication process (establishing how communication will work seems important!!). For a few weeks, one of the attorneys answered my emails, then it was silence. additionally, I wasnt called by the doctor's offices that they'd told me I'd be called by. Something seemed off. One of the secretaries called me a week after one of my emails and wanted to schedule a phone convo with one of the attorneys. I sent an email to them, explaining that I didnt want to schedule a phone call without knowing what it was about (a short email response to me saying that everything was okay but that a phone convo was needed to discuss certain issues at greater depth wouldve reassured me). If i scheduled a phone call only to be told over the phone that they weren't working with me anymore, it wouldve been an additional insult added to the "injury." I decided not to schedule the phone call. If they didnt have the decency to acknowledge my emails with at least a short response, and chose to only communicate with me via secretary after Id signed paperwork (that prevented me from going to another attorney), then I decided it wasn't worth it. I just want to be treated as a human - that's all! Not as a case number that's less important than the attorneys. Communicate about communication procedures! And if emailing wasnt working, then send a short email that explains why a phone convo is necessary. I wont jump through hoops for someone who doesnt extend basic respect. read more

I believe that a lot of people misunderstand what a workers' compensation lawyer is about. Jay represents you against your employer's third party claims management company. While the term "third party" implies impartial, they are not. They basically represent your employer against you in a legal matter. In other words they want to screw you. Your employer and his claims management view your claim as a lawsuit. Jay is not interested in a discrimination case or management harassment at your workplace. Jay and his staff know the doctors and medical facilities and the process and the opposition. At the end of the matter you receive a disability rating and Jay get's a percentage of it and perhaps a share of your time off pay. Statistics show that someone represented in a case by an attorney on average get 7 times what they would have received without one. My case ended up being worth very little to Jay and he was disappointed by that. But a simple matter became more complicated and I would be seriously suffering today or even dead if they had not fought against the claim's management company and navigated me through the hearing system. When Starbucks' Sedgwick Insurance tried to avoid paying on an obvious work injury when my wife fell on black ice (due to Starbucks policy of downplaying employee safety in severe historic Northern Nevada ICE storms ) and fell on the black ice and broke her wrist and injured her hand, Jay Short personally attended her disability exam appointment, expeditiously filed an appeal to the insurance companies obvious error in judgment. Then, when the Starbucks' Sedgwick insurance company did not follow the Nevada Hearing Officers orders on a 1st appeal, Jay promptly filed a 2nd appeal, this time to the Nevada Judge in charge of workers comp cases and WON a decision against the Starbucks' Sedgwick Insurance Company to include my wife's disabled hand in the settlement. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly Jay Short did for us. My husband's work injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery/rehabilitation time. Hubby communicated with his employer every step of the way, bringing his boss the doctor/rehab notes. He wanted to be back to work ASAP. The company still let him go. His insurance was canceled, they took his work phone, and told him they'd have to "see if they had work for him" when he returned. That's when we contacted Jay, to protect ourselves. At the very first meeting Jay told us he'd take care of us. My hubby was concerned that he'd have to accept a crap job from his employer, something menial like janitorial (he had 20+ years of professional experience in his field). Jay ASSURED us he would protect my hubby and told us not to worry, he wouldn't let hubby be forced into a janitorial job. Our mistake was trusting him at his word. Jay got us a settlement, and it wasn't as much as some, thankfully hubby can still work. Upon being released back to work, the job offer from his company was so absurd: starting over as a new hire, losing all seniority, $5/hr cut in pay, and what was in the job description? JANITORIAL. We assumed the job would be rejected and hubby could move on to vocational rehabilitation. We went into Jay's office on a Thursday to sign the settlement papers and proceed with the next step. "You're going back to work on Monday," Jay said, without warning. Hubby had to accept their terrible offer, if he wanted any chance of voc rehab. Excuse me? Wasn't Jay supposed to protect his job? He says he would. We were shocked. I said apparently the laws were made to protect the employer and not the employee, Jay snapped back, "Well then you shouldn't have voted for Trump, these are his policies!" Huh? First of all, we aren't affiliated with either political party, nor have we ever supported Trump. Regardless, politics have NOTHING to do with work comp claims, no matter our voter status. Could Jay be any more unprofessional? The meeting was such a sham, Darcy wouldn't even look either of us in the eye, I'm sure she knows we were completely railroaded. Once Jay got his pay he was pretty much done with us. I'm sure he was upset that his check wasn't as big as he'd hoped, sorry hubby wasn't injured enough to make it worth Jay's efforts. My husband stayed in that horrible position for nearly a year, it was clear his boss was happy to get the cheap labor and they treated him like scum after contacting Jay. Any time we tried to get Jay's help, we could clearly tell Jay was done with us and didn't care. That settlement was what helped us stay afloat and pay the bills with the outrageous salary cut Jay allowed to happen. Forget catching up after nearly a year of disability checks. I still don't know what Jay actually did for us. Hubby would've been better off not contacting a lawyer and finding another job after his injury. I thought we were protected under workmen's compensation, and if not, shouldn't Jay have protected us? He didn't. All in all, I wish we'd never contacted Jay. I hope to God we never need another work comp attorney but if we do, it definitely won't be Jay Short. read more

Jay is a straight up person & unlike a lot of attorney's he actually has a moral compass & does right by his clients. I've experienced attorneys in the past who rarely get back to you and really don't truly have your best interest at heart. That's not the case here. They are on top of things, keep you in the loop. Jay Short is very unprofessional, he will discriminate if you have a felony on your record, which is what happened in my case. 16 months representing my workers compensation and once he was notified of my incarceration the law firm decided not to represent me know more. Keep in mind I wasn't even receiving benefits at the time of my incarceration and all my attoney Larry Bernard had to do was just reschedule that doctor's appointment I missed, " that didn't happen". If your a convicted felony don't use this office you will find yourself representing yourself. No attorney will take on a file that another attorney has worked on for many factors and one of the many factor is that the original attorney can place a lien on your Worker's Compensation Claim and no attorney what's to work for free. read more

I needed a work comp lawyer as my injuries were so severe. I had only worked worked for my company for a month. The company that I worked for did not want to pay me for any overtime that I did and they didn't care that I was injured as severely as I was. I called Jay shorts office while in the hospital and I spoke with Darcy, who is amazing by the way, she called me back immediately she walked me through the process and she informed me that she would be able to take our case whenever we were ready. Worker's Comp. did not pay me what I should've been paid so we did obtain J short. I needed immediate surgery and it has been almost a year of surgery,therapy and fighting the insurance companies. 6 months ago, I contacted Jay Shorts office about my workmans comp case. His secretary told me he didn't have time for me. This while he spends thousands on tv ads showing 4 times a day. When I had major problems with the PPD from the ins. co. later, He declined and "said I should get an attorney". I thought he was an ATTORNEY.
