    Getting serious!

Live jazz, dimmed lighting, Chianti and creme brulee: call me old fashioned but this is a great date setup! We got there after a craft beer at the Dove & Olive just up the road, hungry and still a bit thirsty! The bottle of Chianti, quite decent, with a bit of live music, helped us overcome this terrible thirst. By the time the bottle, empty to the last drop of Dionysos's nectar, had taken its leave, we were ready to rock the food - whilst listening to jazz I KNOW RIGHT!! Tempura cheese, pork gyoza, was so long ago I forgot the last dish :-/ and creme brulee: everything was hot when it arrived, tasty, made fresh, served with a smile. The staff's efficiency to take away empty plates is noteworthy: ninjas ... I REMEMBER, duck was the 3rd dish and it was delicious!!! All in all I think Jazzushi is a tad noisy and that's the only thing I will hold against it. Past that, it's missing something to get to 5 stars but I can't quite put my finger on it ... Duck fat fried ginger and sweet potato tempura should do it!

My physiotherapist at the time made me aware of this restaurant and I'm grateful to him for it because I'm not sure that I would have ever come across it without his recommendation (even while working down the block at one time). But except for the dull exterior, Jazushi is a stupendously excitable place. The restaurant name is an amalgamation of jazz and sushi. Jazushi. The best explanation I have for that short burst of brilliance is that, if someone's truly clever, it's going to show up across the board, from the restaurant name, to the food, to the service. Genius ain't got no shortcomings, my humble friend. So, the jazz. It is as good as that sounds. A group of jazz musicians play beautiful soul-enriching music while you're getting seated, while you're ordering, while you're eating, while you're talking, while you're in the midst of leaving. And it won't bother you one bit (I would say it would bother you a whole lot if you got the same treatment every night). The sushi and service are the other night-defining factors. The staff obliged me very generously with a particular kind of sushi (the wussy chicken kind) that wasn't on the menu. It came out with mayonnaise drizzled on it, I unwittingly let out a small yelp, back in the kitchen it went, and then back out again this time with the new, no-mayonnaise version. I was so charmed.

Nice setting! Jazz/Japanese food/ fusion. Don't come here just for sushi or teriyaki, but the creativity! Eel rice, I thought they would match it with tea, but instead they give us the Dashi ( mild fish flake broth) it's very good! The eggplant plus scallop blend well inside the mouth. The root salad with pesto mayo was a fresh/nice surprise. Music is good, great lighting. It's casual and enjoyable!

Motto is the underdog of Japanese restaurants at Sussex Centre. Not only do they live in the shadow of highly rated Ramen Ikkyu, but Motto's location doesn't get the best foot traffic either. The escalators up from ground floor plop you out on the opposite side. This was my third time visiting Motto. Typically, there would be one or two very helpful and courteous girls who greet and coax you into checking out their menu. Thank goodness for picture menus! This time there was a dude by the of Chris working behind the counter. He first thanked me for stopping to look at the menu, then after suggesting that I should try one of the deep-fried options, he thanked me again for ordering. Genuinely courteous? Absolutely! CHICKEN KATSU PLATE ($9) OMG!!!! Best bang for your buck for suuuuure! The chicken is exactly how Chicken Katsu is supposed to be made. Crispy, flaky outside and juicy inside. If you've read my other reviews, you know I can consider myself a bit of a Chicken Katsu snob since that's my go-to-dish at Japanese restaurants. To top things off with this belly-loving dish, you get rice, a side salad w/dressing and miso soup... Oh and almost forgot THE BEST part - FREE ICE CREAM!!!!! Definitely coming back again to try another suggestion..

It is located in the courtyard of an apartment complex on Mountain Street and Broadway. I can only hope someone is clever enough to search for 'sushi' and will find this review. I was never avid fan of sushi so I didn't really eat it all that often. But things changed when I found T&J Fresh Sushi. Now I order by phone for the whole office so frequently that they remember me by name. We mix up our orders and ask for half half, which they are always happy to do. I used to go for the Large Roll ($10) but found I could never finish it so now I stick with the Medium Roll ($5) of half vegetable beef teriyaki and half avocado prawn tempura. Paired with their 'special sauce' and a dash or two of soy, it is hands down the best sushi I have ever had. I have also tried the Gyoza ($7) but as they are deep fried, I don't enjoy them as much as the Chinese steamed ones. I can't stress enough how lovely the staff are, always so friendly and genuinely happy to see you. There is some basic seating that spills into the courtyard, a great place to eat your lunch in the sun.

I have to say, these guys complicate some of the dishes more than I need, but I have to say, what they come up with is truly inspired. If they add a little smoke flavor to something, it's so subtle that it's quite amazing. And they do it naturally - with flame, not fake things. The sashimi is fresh and wonderful, as is the Hamachi or Crudo. They do some sushi that has those different flavored mayonnaises involved, which is not really how I like sushi, but I had to admit the flavors were incredible. And the presentation was beautiful. The ramen was solid as well. The noodles were fresh and wonderful. I'd come here again.

I was quickly sat by a waitstaff and she told me to scan the QR code on the dining table. Everything had to be ordered and paid via the website. Cellphone signal was a bit choppy as the restaurant is on the lower ground level. There were two WiFi servers and needed clarification from another server which to sign on. Once I placed my order, my Gyoza was delivered within 5 minutes, few minutes later my Chicken Karaage Don was dropped second. Delicious and made fresh!! Other items on the menu I'd like to try later are ramen and side orders, Ipuddo & Wonderbao, Rice dishes including curry, and they also serve Beer and Sake! This would be a perfect spot for HH! For those who like to dine out with large groups, who may have friends or attendees who drink too much, or don't dish out their fair share of the meal, this is a perfect place as you order on your own as the restaurant doesn't accommodate separate checks and/or multiple credit cards from a large party.
