We had an amazing experience planning with Miss Susan and having the party with the rest of the American Legion Post 179 Crew. Susan was responsive and fun, and made us feel completely at ease through our party planning process. We would work with her again in a heartbeat. The venue is SO COOL. It feels like going back in time, like a sock hop in the 1950s or something. It was the perfect size for our party of 60, including a dancefloor area, but I think their total capacity is around 115 people. They had tables and chairs available, as well as alcohol and bartenders onsite. Awesome! Less vendors to hire, which made the party more streamlined. NOTE FOR FUTURE PARTY PEOPLE: The upstairs room runs SUPER DUPER hot in the summertime. We were all sweatin' up a storm. If you have an event at this venue, be mindful of the weather and prepare for it. Basically, bring a BUNCH of big ole electric fans and maybe even offer paper fans as party favors. Nick and I also love the bar downstairs. We've visited a handful of times before our party and it's always good vibes. Drinks are affordable, and you'll be in good company. After a couple of beers, I was thinking about switching to a martini and playfully asked the bartender, "How are your martini skills?" That was it. Instead of taking it in the lighthearted spirit in which it was intended--or even simply saying she didn't appreciate the question--the bartender reacted as though I'd said something deeply offensive. She walked away visibly upset and refused to serve me. What made the experience particularly strange was what happened next. The other bartender came over to find out what was going on. I explained exactly what I'd said and that there was no insult or disrespect intended; I was literally just opening a conversation about ordering a martini. Rather than defusing an incredibly minor misunderstanding, she doubled down, insisted that my question was somehow inappropriate, and reinforced the refusal to serve me. At that point, I left. I've spent plenty of time in bars and restaurants, and I can't remember another experience where such an innocuous interaction was interpreted with this much hostility. People misunderstand each other sometimes. Professional hospitality means giving a customer a reasonable benefit of the doubt, communicating like an adult, and resolving a minor misunderstanding--not immediately assuming ill intent and escalating it. What concerns me most is that this wasn't one bartender having an off moment. Both bartenders independently chose escalation over hospitality, which makes me wonder whether this reflects a broader culture problem. As a new neighbor, that's especially disappointing. I genuinely want the businesses in this neighborhood to succeed. But hospitality requires a baseline level of professionalism, emotional intelligence, and generosity toward customers. It's only open 10 times a year to non-members, so it was crowded. I felt so happy to finally be there and enjoy the rest of my day. We found a place to camp out on the deck and picnic. They let you bring in your own food, but I forgot to bring a real lunch. I bought a meat jerky stick and chips along with a couple pitchers of beer. My friends brought some food, which we shared. People were enjoying the weather, family and friends getting together over pitchers of beer, board games and lunch. It was a perfect day.
