Marjorie Eliot is truly a national treasure. There are certain NYC institutions that come to my mind which I always recommend people to check out before it's too late - like watching Dom DeMarco slinging pies on Avenue J or grabbing a late night soft serve from Ray Alvarez...and Marjorie Eliot definitely falls in the same category. For those the uninitiated, Marjorie Eliot is a jazz musician and long-time Harlem resident who has hosted a parlor jazz set in her apartment for over 20 years - she performs each concert as a tribute to her son who passed away several years ago. Each and every Sunday since then, rain or shine, through thick and thin, she has never failed to put on her parlor show. If you make the trek out here, you will be treated to some amazing jazz, poetry reading, and gospel - put on by the most loving and beautiful human, in an intimate setting packed with both locals and tourist alike. Truly closest thing to a religious experience if there ever were one. Mad, mad props to Yelper @Lily L., who gives a thorough description of how to maximize your experience here (everyone should read her review before you go!). Can't stress how important it is to arrive early, especially if you want to have a view of the performers - you are being literally invited into her very own apartment, so the place is small. Marjorie and her friends are such gracious hosts. Definitely bring cash to donate and show your appreciation. The last time I was there, there was another elderly Harlem resident who was visiting the show for the first time. She was in tears at the end of the show - saying how she felt transported back to a different era (this lady actually knew Langston Hughes!). Apparently these parlor jazz gatherings were commonplace back in the day in Harlem - back then usually to help make rent...and Marjorie Eliot continues to honor that tradition and carries on the spirit of Harlem. I remember Marjorie closing that particular set with a particularly moving speech. I beg forgiveness for mincing her words, but it was to this effect: "People say Harlem has changed so much, for better or for worse. But you will never know how much each and every one of you mean to me, to see people from all over the world, all different colors and languages, here, and sharing this with me in my home. This is the real Harlem, and no matter what, they can never take Harlem away from me...because Harlem is in my heart." I tell you, not a dry eye in that room that night... While attending a African American History Month event at Macy's Center City Chef Marcus Samuelsson during his talk mentioned Marjorie's Place. It was so reminiscent of the days long past of the jazz greats such as Dizzie and Ella meeting in Harlem, I couldn't resist the desire to go. Months later here we are and Marjorie Eliot's Jazz Parlor and it did not disappoint. Her apartment building was easily to locate however we did not have a floor or apartment number. While taking in the dated beauty of the building looking confused we ask a 'tenant' where could we find 'the jazz' he quickly stated 'Marjorie is on the 3rd floor'. On the elevator with 4 others looking for 'the jazz' without a unit number we followed the crowd to an open door. We enter and immediately running into Ms. Eliot who was friendly and allowed a selfie but she had to get to her music. The apartment is nicely laid out and could seat up to 50 people inside with plenty of room for the performers. There is additional hall 'seating'. They opened with a upbeat church hymn and closed the same way. During our 90 minute visit we were treated to great music, songs and dramatic readings. This was the highlight of my day. Half way through the performance a friendly lady served snacks, juice and water delivering the items by a 'platter or tray'. Shortly after a donation bucket was passed around. Well worth a contribution! The music was excellent, the host was gracious and the venue clean. Dare I say Jazz at Marjorie Eliot's does not disappoint. If you love music and can make your way to Harlem I highly recommend a visit. Keep in mind we visited on a rare 'cool' Sunday in August, fans or air conditioning wasn't necessary but I didn't see any if it were.

Jazz at it's finest... Truly a down to earth experience. Phenomenal in every way. The atmosphere reminded me of a quintessential jazz set from back in the day. The ambiance was chill and the vibe was good. The hostess was sweet and charming and opened her home in a warm and inviting way. The apartment was located in an apartment building in Harlem that was in a non descriptive neighborhood. Although the apartment number wasn't clearly listed, we found our way to the entrance by following the crowd. I loved how the hostess had a friend working with her to pass out snacks, water, and punch, to guests. The apartment was comprised of several rooms which were all used for guest to sit and listen to the various jazz sets as the musician took turn playing and singing. The music was upbeat, soulful, and uplifting. From the rich baritone voices to the various melodious instruments..... parlor jazz at Miss Marjorie's was indeed a treat! I must say, whether a beautiful spring day, nice summer breeze, or crisp autumn day... this place is definitely somewhere to go to enjoy some good music. Good music coupled with good company is a win win situation.

I've lived in New York for 10 years, and this was far and away one of the most amazing things I've ever done here. Great mixed crowd, incredibly welcoming hosts and terrific jazz, gospel and piano solos! At intermission they served apple juice and cookies and everyone was loving it. I feel like writing a poem about this day, or a short story, its just that warm and wonderful. For a perfect Sunday, go first to Charles Country Pan Fried Chicken and have a nice lunch and then get to Marjorie's early to get a good seat.

It was a sunny and probably the last warm Sunday before winter comes. My friends and I spent a wonderful afternoon at Ms. Marjorie Eliot's historic apartment in Washington Heights. The door opened at 3pm, where a small, diverse crowd people already gathered in the cheerful living room, including neighbors in the building, local New Yorkers and smart tourists who followed guidebooks. Ms. Eliot started the session with piano, joined by equally talented musicians who sang, played cello and trumpet. The room was filled with kindness, warmth and passion. It was an intimate moment where friends, strangers and the neighborhood connected. It was what living in a city was all about. Ms. Eliot was also super nice by offering us light snacks and juice, she was the cutest old lady ever! She just wanted to bring people together by sharing her music in her living room and had been doing it for years. Thanks you Ms. Eliot for accepting us as her "family" and let us become a part of this joyful jazz tradition! More reading: http://nyc.robbreport.com/article/great-find-marjorie-eliots-parlor-jazz

However, on the way there she said, "Yay, jazz in Harlem! This is awesome!" So... not wanting to disappoint her, not having been to jazz in Harlem for a long time, and not knowing where to go, I looked up some places on the internet, and we decided to go to a place at 449 Lenox Ave called 449 LA. Yes, that is a rather unimaginative name, but boy am I glad we went. The cover charge was $20, which may seem expensive, but included all you can eat (red beans and rice with baked chicken), and all you can drink (a choice among various soft drinks and sangria, which was not the best sangria I've ever had, but it wasn't bad, and I do believe it was spiked with brandy to yummy effect). The website where I found it says the cover is $10, which it normally is, but it was more that night because of the included food and drink. Call ahead to see what the deal is. The place itself is intimate -- I'd say about 18 people could actually be seated. But that Saturday night was brutally cold (25F, -4C, and it was very windy), so there weren't that many people there. We arrived at around 10:30pm, and there were about 8 other people. The service was very warm and friendly; when the band wasn't playing, the server stopped to chat with us asking where we were from and made other small talk. The music was GREAT. Small band: piano, drums, bass, sax, and a guy who invented his own instrument that was two kinds of saxes joined together that he blew into at the same time so that he was always playing a chord. No brass that night. A couple of improv pieces, a few standards. A couple of songs with vocalists. Not too loud, not too abstract, all of it very enjoyable. The band didn't mind if we took pictures (non-flash, of course) and we did. I would highly recommend 449 LA if you want to go to jazz in Harlem.

The decor is to die for. There's a "lounge" area by the area with large couches, velvet assents and little tables. the rest of the venue has warm tones with classy accents. overall, i truely liked it. half way through the staff dimmed the lights, overall its a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I did not partake in the bar drinks this time around, as im taking a break from drinking, but he other tables seemed to grab some nice looking craft cocktails. overall service was slow, there was only 1 staff member on board this day, but it was just myself and 2 family members here for 45 mins. i dont think this was the servers fault. it seemed the kitchen was a bit relaxed. the calamari was fresh and large rings, but complaint was that they were not as crunchy as ive had in other locations. i think they needed a minute or 2 to fry a little more. it comes with a dip, not a marinara sauce. i grabbed the chargrilled octopus. i loved this. only downfall is that it comes with a large salad. i would have rather less salad and more octopus itself. for my entree i had the scallops over risotto with ginger carrot sauce. there were 5 medium scallops provided. they also needed another minute or 2, they were almost perfect. the carrot ginger sauce was nice, but mainly carrot flavor. i liked the risotto, but i think they needed to tone down on the salt. the tiramisu was very good! they brought out a candle and a free glass of champagne. i would come back for drinks and another meal.

First, I suggest you only go on this tour, if you are sincerely interested in having the time of your life ALONG with learning about the history of Harlem Jazz. This was such a genuine, real, unpretentious night, never to be forgotten. I say, don't waste these people's lives if you are not sincerely into learning something new about Harlem, about people, about jazz, or about life. Just keep your comfy self at home. : ) This was one of the coolest, most surprising nights we've had in NYC! Amanda is a social genius, to say the least. She understands people, from all walks of life. She is a fabulous story teller and rolls out the night with a no-nonsense open heart. She does all she can to make you feel comfortable in showing you experiences that are hidden, off the beaten path and ones you could probably not find on your own. She goes above and beyond what most would do. You can see she puts 1000% into making this a remarkable experience for everyone. Amanda took my 17 year old daughter and me - along with abut 8 other people, deep into the world of jazz on 135th Street!! It was a night that was rich with genuine soul, enthusiastic passion, big energy and an experience that will forever live in our hearts! It was like getting a PHD in jazz and Harlem in a night! We have both been forever changed- and, THE TALENT WAS UNFORGETTABLE! Amanda gave us an inspiring night tour, that we really didn't want to end. We started way off the beaten path At The American Legion Post- A private club with Harlem's last original Hammond organ being put to great use by Greg Lewis (also known as Organ Monk) along with the very talented Russell Carter on Drums! This group was led by a two-time Grammy Nominated, Saxophonist and Flutist, (who just performed with Rod Stewart and The Roots on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon), Mr. David Lee Jones! His jazzy flute playing was INCREDIBLE! I had never heard the flute played like this in Jazz before... and it was toe-tapping, heart expanding good! Later in the evening, we walked down Swing Street - and saw all the old Jazz haunts from the prohibition era & the1930's and rode the, as Amanda called it, "municipal limousine" aka- bus- haha- to the amazing, sexy and high vibin' Minton's Playhouse to listen to Mr. Jason Marshall's & his extraordinarily talented and diverse Big Band! I personally loved the female trombonist... WOW! Minton's had AWESOME FOOD and delicious drinks! We loved the people that worked there and they all made us feel so special and welcomed. We had great seats too. They made us feel like they were 'waiting' for us. I think that might be the "Amanda Magic" haha! I noticed she is beloved in Harlem! We took scrumptious pictures of the night that will help keep our memories of this night forever alive. We met WONDERFUL new friends on the tour, from around the world - and fell in love with places we would have never found if it hadn't been for Amanda. It made us want to go back and do it all over again the next night. If you want a rare experience, something you can't find easily -- this is the tour for you. It was intimate and beyond entertaining. It made me wonder why I have never done a tour like this before. Amanda made it remarkable. She was born for this job. Her knowledge of music, Harlem history, musicians, along with her sense of humor, ability to communicate, love for people make her an outstanding guide. Also, I felt 1000% safe in her company. My daughter was eyes-wide-open INSPIRED and so was I... and our hearts danced ourselves to the taxi, wanting to play Billy Holiday all the way home. What a dream this night was for us to experience !!! Thank you to everyone who made it so special. Meredith and Lauren
