The manager, Seth, has made me feel welcome and happy on many visits to this bar with excellent food and drinks. First thing, look at the chalk board for the specials on food and drink. There is an interesting groups of people that come here. There are people from the local hospital or university and the local neighborhood. I love a salty jumbo pretzel with a cocktail. The sandwiches and other food are consistently excellent. They also have live music and a full calendar. This is one of the bars local to the Washington Heights community. It's frequented by people who work and are students of Columbia medical center such as myself. It's a small unassuming place with a limited menu of snacks and drinks, but it's enough to serve its purpose as a fun place to gather with friends/colleagues after work. The meat and cheese board was cool and had a good variety of things. The pretzel was freshly baked, but while the salt was very pretty, it was a bit too much so me and my other friend kept shaking off the extra salt before eating lol. The whiskey brownie contained ACTUAL whiskey in it to my surprise lol, a little too much for me but I'm sure alcohol lovers would like this dessert. There's also some games that you can borrow from the restaurant to play with your friends, we played uno! I wouldn't go out of my way to make a special trip here but if you're looking for a place to meet in a casual setting in Washington Heights, this is a good spot for that. read more

Great bar in Washington heights. Pop in here once in a while before class or after work and they never disappoint. Can't beat a pint and a pour ($10) and service is top notch. Get the muffuletta if you're hungry, because it's as close to getting one in Nola. Vibes are great, and I would tell anyone in the area it's a must go, especially for whiskey pours. I had the best time at Penny Jo's. Shout out to my friend Justin for putting me on. Solid cocktails at reasonable prices and staff that is friendly, funny and accommodating. The bartenders were amazing people and I would hang out with them whenever. The drinks were very high quality and at a point they were being made just for me- I was off the menu. If I didn't like something,the servers were happy to make adjustments, with no fuss. The bites are also good. I had the French onion grilled cheese. Loved it! Stopped in after work with some friends. While they don't have happy hour, there cocktails are $11 and soooo delicious! I got the El Diabolo which was tequila based. All of my friends loved their cocktails too. They have a small food menu where everything is reasonably priced! I loved the turkey cran sandwich I got, also $11. This place is such a gem! We had nil expectations for a bar up in Washington Heights, but wow, we fell in love. We went on a Saturday with some lovely live jazz, warm cozy Christmas lights, and really solid cocktails for 2 rounds for four. Wow. New favorite bar!!!! Absolutely sensational service, exquisite and incredibly crafted cocktails and just delicious food. Most important to me--the vibe here is really amazing! Everybody is very chill and welcoming. Ordered the tomato soup&grilled cheese per our wonderful bartender Joseph's recommendation and it was NEXT LEVEL delicious. Joseph is soo cool and sweet-feels like a new friend rather than someone just serving us drinks. He loves what he does and is KILLER at it!! Love him! They host live music Saturday nights as well as burlesque shows throughout the week. If i could give this spot two words to describe it I would say: "elevated chill". Not a single Latino or Hispanic as part of the staff. I came here with mother and sister and although we are all bilingual - we grew up on this street. I am highly disturbed by the fact that this place decided to occupy and gentrify this neighborhood with no positive impact to the community. No wonder it's always empty! read more

From the moment we walked in, the wait staff was really friendly and attentive! They greeted us as we walked in, and then brought over a complimentary amuse bouche - a small plate with mini pickles, hummus, and a piece of cheese on it. It definitely wasn't a lot of food or super fancy, but it had us feeling welcome and comfortable immediately! They have a fairly limited menu, but you can also order standard drinks that aren't on the menu! My friend ordered the Tia Maria from the menu, while I ordered a mint mojito (not on the menu). Both drinks were very well made- decently strong without tasting like it. Cocktails are also $11, which is pretty standard for this area. They also have a happy hour on beers and wine every day, and a live jazz performance once a week. I'm planning to come back, and I'll definitely be recommending this place to my friends as well. This is a great, homey bar, with some yummy food, nestled in lower Washington Heights. The brick wall and good cocktails only add the atmosphere. I've only been here for drinks during a quiet weeknight, and the drinks and sandwich I had were ace! Looking forward to returning for some live jazz.
