The destination on this retreat was Villa Sumaya on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, my first international retreat! Although she plans many things for us to do and to experience, Danae always makes sure there is time to relax, to read or to just be while on retreat. There's yoga practically everyday. She has us choose an encouraging card each day. And made us realize, self-care is very important. When we made suggestions of possible outings, she incorporated them into the schedule. I'd read about a restaurant across the lake with an amazing cheese sampler platter and delicious pâtés so she used her connections at the center to get a reservation for us. And she was game when we suggested hiking Volcan San Pedro. One of the highlights for all of us on that excursion was having lunch among the clouds! Danae is very nurturing. It is amazing how much she cares for her students and their bodies. She will show you the correct way to hold your poses then show you how to do it better and how to dive deeper when you are ready. She has also introduced me to essential oils!

Yenis is enthusiastic and energetic, you can really tell that she cares about Zumba and loves to dance. I've been to about 10 classes so far (she offers a 10 class card for $50 plus one class free). What I like so much about the classes is that she brings in new music and dance moves but also plays some of the same songs during each session so you're able to get the hang of the dance moves. The studio is very new and clean! Nice floors and lots of mirrors! The free water and tea is a nice touch too.

Like many reviewers state, Yenis is an awesome instructor. I love her routines. For the most part, every month, there is a different routine. Therefore, you have a sense of what to expect and work on. Once the month ends, you move on to a new routine and series of songs. Within the routines she does some muscle work, which is also nice. The 6pm(ish) courses are really packed. If you don't like crowds, I say go to the 7pm(ish) courses. They're nowhere near as crowded. Yenis definitely has a following, which is nice. She's super friendly and has great energy. However, I'd like to mention one of the other instructors. Over the summer, I REALLY loved going to Mimi's classes. She has a ton of energy and I also loved her routines. She would incorporate some kickboxing/punching moves, along with some good muscle work (burpees, push-ups). However, she would do this in a fun, manageable way. It always made me sad that more people didn't take her classes. I always looked forward to them:) Both Yenis and Mimi incorporate great music and teach using the mic, which makes following along a lot easier. My only complaint was that there wasn't a short-term contract available when I signed up. I was only around for two months, but I either had to pay for a three-month membership or pay $12 per class.

Now there are more hours available, and a consistent group of kids taking the group classes. It's wonderful for my daughter as she is able to train 4-5 days a week with her favorite ballet teacher. This is a blessing, as it was so rare to get a class with her in the past school my daughter attended where Lise la Cour was the School Director for 10 years. Now she has her every time. The improvement my daughter is making is above and beyond what she was able to do in the past. I believe there are two reasons, 1) Ms. la Cour, 2) the very small size of the class allows for more dancing and more corrections. Classes are geared toward the serious ballet student who excels in and is committed to dance. 8 years and older with a strong foundation in ballet technique. Boys prefer to train with Ms. la Cour, as she is one of the rare teachers in Silicon Valley who can train and choreograph using the Bournonville technique. There are families that drive from over an hour away so their kids can train under Ms. la Cour. I think this is an amazing opportunity for kids to take a class with an incredible teacher. Her classes are filling up, and soon she will not be able to accommodate all the students. I anticipate she will become much more selective in the coming year on who can attend classes. His enthusiasm for all things 'body movement', paired with Ember's always present empathy and support attracted me to the new genre of body movement called partner flow. I had a couple of wonderful afternoons moving with them, learning about my body and getting really excited about the possibilities of opening through movement with my partner. I recommend this as a 'non-verbal' tool to allow for playfulness and openess with one's partner, lover, or group of friends. This is a great anniversary treat, an efficient reconnection strategy, and above all an amazing way to expand one's possibilities of communications with their partner.
