They said the battery was looking a little puny, but not bad ... but the alternator must be shot. Want to buy one now? My wife is as smart as she is good looking (that is to say: very very), so she hired me to take it to a mechanic. Since we only own Toyotas, we don't HAVE a mechanic - the cars just don't need 'em. But there's 150k miles on the van. Thinking we need to find a good shop for future use that isn't the competent-but-expensive dealer. So I looked at Yelp, talked to a few friends, polled a couple of other sites and decided on Larry's. Larry did some sleuthing and decided that my battery isn't quite puny, yet not quite new, either - but not time for a new one. And the alternator is FINE. Don't get me wrong - AZ is great in its place, but so glad we got a second, more learned opinion. Larry's shop cleaned the battery terminals and the throttle body and did a couple of other possibly-related things. He said all that stuff was related to remedying whatever was behind the check-engine code, but couldn't guarantee for absolute sure he'd solved the problem. He said the code isn't critical and probably not even useful for my trim level and engine, and his little tweaks likely solved the problem. But we should keep an eyebone peeled for future flashes. And since my visit, no more check engine light, even for a sec. Believe I win. $60. And peace of mind. And I got to play tug-o-war with his dog. Wins all around. Go there.

One of his careless employees caused a huge gash on the passenger side door and ruined the paint. So as soon as we got off work we went to the place she bought her battery to get a diagnostic reading which stated "bad charging system". Luckily, we were next door to Tire Discounters so we rushed over to see if they could replace her alternator that night because she lives almost an hour from this area and didn't feel confident she'd make it home. We walk in with a new alternator and ask if they can replace it. One guy said they could replace it but it wouldnt be tonight since it was about 5:15 and they close at 6pm. We understood but felt so defeated. I asked if they thought she'd make it to Scottsboro with a bad alternator and one guy said not likely. the other guy, Jacob, said he would go check her output to see what the reading was to help gauge whether or not she should attempt the long commute. once Jacob got the reading he began looking for her alternator to see how hard it would be to get to. After he assessed everything he said he wanted to go ask the other guy a question real quick so we followed him inside. After Jacob spoke to the other guy, he came to the counter and said he was going to put the new one on and said it will be done around 6pm. Jacob went above and beyond to make sure my friend made it back home that night. He was kind, courteous, and fast. Jacob didn't have to do what he did, especially being as close to closing time as it was, but he took great care of us! GO SEE JACOB!

To make a long story short, we approved what was needed to fix the oil leak and the catalytic converter they said was needed. $4800 was quoted and paid when they completed the repair. About four months later we were back for the oil leak which had gotten much worse. They claimed they replaced something related to the oil filter connection. At this point we lost all confidence in their company and we went to the Honda dealership. After hearing Honda's $9,000 bid to fix, we decided to buy a new car and end this nightmare. Christian Brothers should have been honest with us and advised us to not fix this car and buy a new one. They care more for their profits than they do customers. If I could give zero stars, I would have.

I was charged for 6 hours and told that software determines the labor charged, not actual labor time. IT'S A VERB. I feel ripped off and lied to. Just be aware that they don't charge on honest time, but rather computer software estimation. I haven't driven much to know if the work is reputable, but sure hope so.

After a couple of phone calls to find a battery and installation, I bought the battery from "The Battery Store" (really great guys there) who steered me to Miller's (right next door) for the installation. Mr. Miller had an open bay and he took me right in and replaced the battery in under 20 minutes. He was efficient, polite and his office lady is friendly and most helpful. I did all the shopping for the part and finding a shop on the phone and set it all up. I will be taking my vehicle back to his shop the next time something is needed.
