Arrived 15 minutes early, wandered looking foster directory and realized it was on the bottom floor next to elevator. I had requested Christina based on her bio. Greeted warmly upon arrival. Went to her station and had a brief discussion of what I was looking for and her recommendations. Off to the shampoo bowl. Luxurious head massage. Her expertise with fine hair is terrific. I have a new hairstyle that's low maintenance and fits my face perfectly. Although it does cost a little more that the franchise stores, it was well worth it! Will definitely be returning. read more

My boys needed a haircut, so I searched around only to find prices to be quite steep. I normally cut my kids hair, but wanted a nicer cut. This morning I received an email saying that all haircuts for kids and adults were only $10 at Jc Penny Salons during the weekend. After calling in and deciding we would come, I started having doubts, but thankfully pushed through them. My boys got a haircut from Julianna and my daughter got a haircut from Alyssa. Both did a wonderful job and were easy to talk to, plus super nice! I love that the kids got a "professional" hairwash since they haven't experienced that before. I did have to fix a few errors on my sons and daughter, but all in all I was pleased. I plan on bringing my kids back again if (hopefully) they still work there. Went to J.C. Penney's today, browsing seeing if anything caught my eye. Upon entering I saw a sign stating..." 10.00 haircut & blowout" I looked at my phone for the time and thought maybe this is a sign to treat myself. My mom recently passed away and things have been drastically different. This could be just a feeling of refresh that I needed. Called the salon to see if I needed an appointment. The time was 4:13 I had to end up calling three times until someone answered. When a gal did she placed me on hold for 16 mins.. never to return on the line. So I figured I would just walk in and see how busy they were for a haircut. I arrived to see two people getting rung up and three people in line waiting. The gal working the register was a frantic mess! She could not work the register correctly and the two women trying to pay had to try it twice on that register and then three more times moving to the other register. All due to the employee working the register. She was overwhelmed frazzled and so on. I would hate to see the salon extremely busy.. she is it a good first impression of a business at all. No greeting nothing. So after she rings up the two women over a handful of tries ... I walk up next and stand there for her to look up. She then says what do you need? I said I would like to get a haircut. She says we are closed off for cuts. I said you don't close until 7pm it's only 5:09. She said we have a huge line and it's closed. I said I called and was on hold for a very long time and no one ever came back on the line. She said well you should have just walked in. I said that's what I'm trying to do now. She said well... we're closed. I said alright then. This was my first and last time at this salon. What manager hires a person like this to be the face of the salon. People can spend their hard earned money anywhere and clearly I will not be spending mine here. read more

I came here since the reviews were good and my daughter needed a cut and I needed help with her hair. They had kid specials as well. Since I was coming, I brought my son. His hair cut was awful. We have been growing his hair out since thats what he wanted and the lady completely ignored the fact I wanted minimal cut from the top. Stated that was what was in when i said she cut to much. She also continued cutting when I said it was cut too short. The fade is horrible. When I brought that up to Eden, it seemed like she agreed it was like a good fade and offered for one of the other stylists to fix it. I decided against that. As for my daughter, I asked for a rounded bottom for my daughter, but only one side seems kind of rounded rest is straight and I am going in for a 2nd opinion because it just seems like when I tried trimming her hair. This stylist was really nice and gave helpful information i needed regarding her hair care that is the only reason it's getting 2 stars. read more

A couple of the stylists are good - there was a Manager who was excellent but I have not seen him for a few weeks. 2 of my friends went here and had their hair done by someone called Ariel - they BOTH went back for re-do's with her because she is so appallingly bad. Went to the JCPenney salon for their advertised special on kids haircuts. Well apparently not everyone there actually knows how to cut kids' (boys') hair. We got Kim. I was actually wondering if today was her first day as a hair stylist, based on her general mannerisms. She was hesitant to use the #2 clippers when I requested them. She used a #3 on the back and sides, & then she used scissors on top. When she finished, we told her we'd like it shorter & to use the #2. She complained that she'd have to start it all over again ‍. The sides and fade are uneven. She was unable to properly trim the back, his sideburns, and around his ears because she's "not a barber, & they have more specialized tools!" Turns out that she had cut his forehead with the clippers & only apologized after I saw the big cut and asked about it. She didn't make any attempt to style it for him until I asked her to put some gel in and spike up the front. It was a total disaster, so I asked to use her comb to do it myself. The picture shown is after I attempted to fix it!! Lastly, she didn't clean up the remaining loose hairs all over his face, neck, etc., He had to ask her to get the hair dryer out to get rid of the hair, & she still did a terrible job of that. Don't waste your time coming here, despite the good deal on kids cuts. It's worth it to go to a kids cuts place or a barber for boys. So disappointed in this, especially since school starts in a couple days. read more

This place is a real cluster. Don't waste your time. Made an appointment in person the day before, supposedly was going to be with a head stylist, got a voicemail the next day to be told no one is going to be here at that time, could I come in an hour earlier and work with a different stylist. When I called 10 minutes after missing the call, whoever answered had no idea who had called me or what this was about and that someone would call me back. When I finally got a call back from the replacement stylist, I asked if they knew how to do point cut or slide cut, I just kept getting the run around and getting cut off by Alex/Alexis. I felt really disrespected. My hair grows so slowly that I only get it cut twice a year and I know what works with it. When I called back to cancel, I got someone else that couldn't understand that my appointment was for that day and I kept having to repeat yes, 4 on that day. Which then the receptionist kept asking if I had scheduled a perm.... Don't waste your time here. Evidently they are so unorganized that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. The lack of professionalism rang loud and clear so I didn't want to chance it. read more

This place is a complete joke. My mother and brother both came here to get there hair done. My younger brother got a boys cut and the guy seemed like he had no clue what he was doing. On top of that he had small bald patches. We showed him what we wanted and it wasn't even close to the photo. My mom got color done and it absolutely was a nightmare she has been back several time for treatments they damaged her hair. And all the manager said is we dont do refunds we like to fix it. If you guys messed up a simple color why would we want tou to fix it ?!? After being back 3 + times and want her to come back again. I cant even get someone to answer a phone. Alex is amazing! She did a conditioning treatment and haircut for me today and my hair feels amazing. She is thorough in her work and treats her clients' hair with care. Alex takes her work seriously and is a team player- when there was downtime in my treatment she was helping her co-workers and taking care of things around the salon. My mother came into town from Nicaragua to visit for Mother's Day. We decided to go get perms together and have some special mother-daughter time. So, yesterday we made appointments at this salon. Mine was with Ariel Phelan at 3:15pm for a perm with the price listed as $75. My mom had an appointment scheduled with Roshana Malikyar at the same time. We got there to check in and found out that my stylist, Ariel Phelan, called into work and no one bothered to call and let me know that. So the woman said she would see if another stylist would do my hair. A stylist named Mona said she would be able to. She sat me down in the chair, brushed my hair, had me pick out curlers and talked for a bit. Then she said that she was going to charge me $150 for the perm. Originally it was listed as $75 but since she's a different stylist she charges more. The problem is that their prices online list the highest price as $120 they have signs in the store saying that they cannot charge more than the posted price. I brought this to their attention and was met with rudeness and all together disrespect.. Another stylist got a manager and the manager assured her that they would be able to override the price since it was their fault for not notifying me of the cancellation and stylist change. Roshana refused to honor that, despite the managers recommendation. At that point I felt so uncomfortable in the salon that I no longer trusted them to do my hair. I would not recommend this place for anyone who likes professionalism and honesty from their stylist. read more

The absolute worst place I've ever been. The lady spent less than five minutes on my hair! I showed her exactly what I wanted in a picture. I told her I wanted my hair to my shoulders. She started whacking so quickly my hair is just under my earlobes there's no way I can even put it in a ponytail to cover up her mistakes. I have no idea how she is a hairstylist. As I was crying they asked me if I wanted to leave a tip! Don't ever go to this place it doesn't even deserve one star. read more

I have taken my son here 3 times over the past 9-12 months, the first time I asked for just a trim above his ears and in the back. Well the lady I got (I never did get her name, she didn't introduce her hair), she cut all of his layers so he looked like he had a typical "boy" hair cut. I then went to the JCPenney in Carlsbad 2x and I got Aimee and she did a wonderful job. Since the Escondido JCPenney Salon is closer to my house I decided to go there again and got the same lady (still don't know her name), and she did great, cut his hair above his ears and in the back, she kept the layers long like I asked. Well, I went there yesterday again because I was at the mall and my sons hair was looking a little shaggy. So I got the same lady again (Still don't know her name). I told her to just trim above the ear and in the back and trim the bangs so they aren't in his eyes. She did that at first but then she started trimming the layers and ask me if it was good enough, I said I didn't want the layers cut I just wanted it trimmed above the ears and in the back. She was like well now he has a "boys" haircut, I told her I don't care I wanted it long. I will NOT be going to this JCPenney Salon again. The lady did not listen to what I wanted 2 out of the 3 times I went. Yes, it is probably my fault since I went back after the first time but I figured I would try the salon again and I just happened to get the same lady 3x. If I do go back I will be sure to ask for another stylist and I will be more specific as to what I want! But, for now I will just go back to the salon in Carlsbad. read more

As a woman of color I have had a hard time finding a stylist that does ethnic hair in North County. So, by chance I was reading a post on Yelp and decided to swing by JC Penny to meet the stylist and was so happy to find one that could do the works to my hair (shampoo, deep condition, blow dry, cut and flat iron) on the spot! Not to mention the service was not over priced and they carry Kera Kare, Rich and Union hair care lines. Cameron B did a wonderful job on my hair, he provided some much needed hair care tips and also referred me to another JC Penny stylist to do my mother's braided styles that is in the same salon. read more

Worst place in town!! they claim they cut 6 month up babies. We took our 10 month old and 3 years old to this location. first there was a debate between 2 stylist one of them was Delinda and the other one i dont remember her name that who is going to take whom. first the stylist who was assigned to my 10 month old told she is not comfortable doing the infant one so she will take my daughter and she said the other stlylist(Delinda) is good with infants. When Delinda comes she said she will use clipper on him, to that the stylist 1 said no she should use scissors instead then Delinda says then you take the infant and she will take the 3 year old. My daughter has beautiful long hairs and she said lets trim them and and give face frame in the front. In 5 minutes she says she is done. When i showed her the frame is nto even trimmed evenly, she didnt even acknowledged that and got ofended and left the station after asking her manager to finish my daughter. On the other hand my son who is 10 month was crying and he had hairs all over his face and mouth when asked for a tissue they dont have a tissue there. I was really surprised they dont keep soft tissues on the stations. the manager comes and says you need to move from these stations without cleaning my boy. The hairs were all over his neck and clothes and they she was asking us to move. How insensitive that was. The manager gave me a free hair cit for my daughter for next time, as if I am going to go there again. The worst experience. Oh also midway some other expert comes and tells us to take the kids to those kids salon. I was really shocked at the behaviour, they dont have a decency to treat the customer with kids. Please save your money and go to a better place to have a better cut and better experience. read more

This review has been a long time coming. I went in for a touch up balayage, my hair was darker on top & faded into a golden blonde, plus I needed touch ups on some grays..I had asked for a Master Stylist well I got David which later found out he was not a Master Stylist. David completely over processed my hair, my hair was already blonde, why keep it in for a full 45 minutes!?! On top of that it came out to be all the same color! Hair breakage all down the hair shaft & on top. My hair was so healthy, thick & beautiful when I walked in there. Their resolution was to fix it? How do you fix that?!? So I paid over $200 for a professional hair stylist to ruin my hair plus he didn't even give me a balayage. I have lost so much hair, it now looks thin & frizzy & has continued to break. This was a little less than 3 months ago. I would not recommend David, he completely ruined my hair!! Plus another guy whom I can't recall his name butchered my sons hair, my son said thankfully I'm on spring break. Total incompetence! I would not recommend that salon to anyone! They refused to refund my money! There are real salons with real stylist who know what they are doing. It's not Ok to ruin someone's hair & act like you did nothing wrong! Everyone can tell my hair was ruined & it's going to take a very long time for it to be healthy again, I've had to cut over half the length off & I have lost half the thickness due to breakage, it now looks stringy & messy. I have never - EVER - been happy with my hair after a first visit ... until DAWN. She is the FIRST stylist who cut and highlighted my hair EXACTLY as I wanted! I showed her a picture, and she got the highlights and cut EXACTLY as I wanted. My husband always "feels sorry" for the stylist when I'm going for the first time, but now - for the first time EVER - I am still telling him how happy I am with my hair! I can't say enough good things about Dawn. She's personality+! Her prices are very reasonable, great location and parking. Plus she loves her job and enjoys meeting people. Okay, I can't help myself! I have to say that ever since I began going to this JCPenney Salon a couple of years ago I have ALWAYS been pleased with the outcome. That first time I had a coupon special. However, their regular overall price for a wash, cut and blow dry ($32) fits beautifully into my budget! Over these past couple years I have had a few different stylists and each one has been very personable and professional. Unfortunately the first two I had are no longer there but fortunately for me David answered the phone a few months back when I called for an appointment! I cannot say enough about the young gentleman! He is patient, professional, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I love that his own hair style is always a little different each time I go and to me that is a reflection of JCPenney Salon's many possibilities! I continue to make my appointments with David because I receive many compliments from family and friends with the outcome. Yes, I usually prefer to stick with the same style each time but David does a fine job with it and I love the hot towel the helps me relax during shampoo time as well as the massaging of the scalp during the actual shampoo. Chuckle, David knows that that is one time I really don't do any talking so as to truly enjoy the experience. MY POINT??? Unfortunate-- made an appointment. days in advance to cut my daughter's hair. Showed up at the scheduled time to find out there was no stylist on duty to cut her hair and that I had been called 45 minutes beforehand for them to cancel (when I was in transit). We made an appointment for a reason and do not have a lot of extra time to schedule in a haircut before we have photos scheduled. Complained to the on duty manager at the store who said the salon manager would follow up with me. Never heard a peep. Called again yesterday and left a message. Today the call has still not been returned by the manager. With this type of service for clients-- the salon will be out of business in no time. The least they could have done is to return the call, rebook the appointment, and cut my daughter's hair for free. The bad publicity they will now get from me is much more harmful than returning a call! Such a shame as it is an affordable option close to home! read more
