Today my mom reported that a technician named David came to their house and in less than 5 minutes discovered that they did not understand how to light the pilot light. The gas logs are new to them. He helped them change the batteries to the remote and explained how to maintain the logs. Not only was he on time and polite, he didn't even charge them for the service call. He wanted measurements of the fireplace box. We sent measurements. Then he wanted pictures. We sent pictures. Then he wanted photos of some label in the fireplace. We found no label. So, we texted back and told the guy we would PAY HIM to just come out and look at our fireplace. All communication stopped. Last week, we both went to America's Hearth and Patio. We talked to some woman in there, and told her that their installation guy has stopped talking to us, thereby halting any chance of us buying one of their stoves. She told us that he was their only installation guy, she had no way to reach out to him, and when he contacted her again (no expectation of when) she would tell him to get in touch with us. (Really?? They have no way to pick up the phone and call the guy who is installing their fireplaces??) When I told her we didn't wish to deal with him, she told us that he is the ONLY guy in the area who is "certified" to work on fireplaces. Imagine that - in all of Chattanooga, Hixon, South Pittsburg, Fort Oglethorpe, GA and Dalton GA - only ONE MAN is qualified to work on fireplaces? After a 15 minute drive up to Hixon, we visited a competitor, and what do you know? They have an IN HOUSE technician who is "certified" to work on fireplaces! In five more minutes, I had an appointment and an invoice for getting our fireplace looked at! Looks like we will be purchasing a Vermont Casting stove instead of a US STOVE brand. So, not only did we get IGNORED by America's Hearth and Patio, they made NO attempt to resolve the issue when we complained. To top it off, they LIED about having no way to contact their installer, and there being no other "certified" installers in the entire Chattanooga area. To top it off, it's been a week and we STILL have not been contacted by them. Thank God we didn't give them any of our money.

This was fortunate because the hearth came damaged. Even though I didn't need the hearth Hearthside refunded me $400 for the damaged piece. I thought that was fair. As it ended up I had to use one of the broken pieces of the hearth to make new granite legs for the sides of my fireplace. So everything worked out very well.
