We've been coming here for the last 11 years with our two dogs and cat. Dr. Alice was an amazing human being, but after she sold the practice, it's easy to see that the new owner's primary incentive is to make money. Our dog regularly needs an antihistamine to treat her skin allergies, but the vet has taken every step to make it more costly and difficult to obtain this medication - no longer sending prescriptions to online sellers (requiring you to pick up a paper copy each month to physically mail or use their online store), annual increases to treatment costs, and lack of empathy and familiarity with our pets. This was a 5-star vet years ago, but now only does the bare minimum to care for our pets. Time to find a new vet... read more

Dr. Tim Schacht had been my vet for the last several years I've lived here in Detroit. Our two guinea pigs, McCoy and Reese, were his patients. While most people may question bringing your guinea pig to a vet, the folks at Jefferson Vet always welcomed us with a smile. The boys had various ailments over the years. A scratch, an appetite change, a skin issue. Dr. Tim always knew what to do or try. Sadly, I find myself not needing their services anymore, but thanks to the excellent care we were given, our boys lived to be 8 years of age. Dr. Tim was a good listener and always explained everything. He was careful to guide us in our care, always mindful of expenses and honest about any given situation. And the vet accepts CareCredit, a credit card for vet services that helped us pay off expenditures over time. I just got a sympathy note after McCoy left us. It's a nice gesture and speaks to how much this vet truly cares for their patients. I'm glad we found Dr. Tim and the folks at Jefferson Vet and if I ever find myself in the company of another four legged friend, I know where we'll take them. read more

I brought my cat here for a 2nd opinion after she was found to have a foot tumor that was cancerous. The original vet I took her too was unhelpful and didn't give me any treatment options except to take her to a cancer specialist and get chemotherapy or amputate her leg - both incredibly costly options easily at least a thousand dollars. As it was I paid him over $600 for a biopsy that came back inconclusive. He wouldn't venture a guess as to prognosis, longevity, pain, sensibility of chemo or operation and left me unsure what to do. I felt perhaps it was time to put her down, but he wouldn't give me any opinion one way or the other, which left me frustrated and upset. Anyways - I took her to Dr. Tim who confirmed the tumor, the poor prognosis and even worse the fact that she had gone blind suddenly. I was feeling at this point my poor kitty needed to be put down and he agreed that it would be the most humane way to go. He was non-judgmental - because it's a horrible thing to finally have to admit that your animal needs to be put to sleep and you feel so guilty. He told me after it was over that it was the right decision for her. He said he made house calls so we scheduled her final appointment for 2 days out and I spent the next 2 days loving her and spoiling her as best I could. He came out and was fantastic. So calm, very caring, very concerned and explained what was going to happen. He let me hold her while he administered the drugs and she peacefully passed away. The office billed me after the fact which was nice. Also - I've had other pets put to sleep elsewhere and the bill here was much lower, especially considering it was a house call. I know you'd like to think price wouldn't be a concern when it comes to your animals, but it's a reality, so the lower prices were a nice surprise. read more

Look, I could write a 10'page review if this clinic. The original vets - Dr. Tim and Dr. Alice treated not only our three Labrador Retrievers, but strays we picked up since 1992. There was no more knowledgeable and caring vets anywhere. When we moved downriver, we tried several practices and ended up making the drive to Jefferson Vet, especially when our Black Lab fell I'll and we were getting crazy diagnosis with expensive treatment plans attached. My husband at the time is a physician, so it's not like we didn't have a basis to judge. We took her to Dr. Tim who immediately figured out what was wrong. Sadly she had Myasthenia gravis a long-term neuromuscular disease that leads to varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. Hers had spread to her basal nerve and she couldn't breath. He was honest about her prognosis and said there was no treatment, just management of symptoms. They also treated her when she was hit by a car. Fast forward and I am a single parent who moved back to the city. The new docs were transitioning in. Tim and Alice made sure they found the right people to take over the practice when they retired. I get the same level of care now as always. They saw my beloved Black Lab to the end, working with me on the bill when she had two surgeries. The surgeries were those that many vets would refer you out for. I now have a rescue pit Bull and she has had many health crisis. They get me in on an emergency basis, listen, provide sage advice and a treatment plan that takes cost into consideration. They are all very straightforward, which I can see could be taken as rude. I frankly appreciate the honesty. They always listen, and answer my questions. The staff is excellent as well. They could have taken their practice anywhere but chose to stay on the east side of Detroit to help this underserved community get great care for their pets. If you can get in to the practice, you won't be disappointed. read more

I can't say enough about how much I appreciate JVC and its staff! My cat recently suffered a bout of liver disease and the folks at JVC were knowledgeable, helpful, understanding, and kind throughout his hospitalization and recovery. While he was hospitalized I was able to visit daily, and the staff always greeted me warmly and encouraged me to spend as much time with him as I could. I had the opportunity to work with both Dr. Tim and Dr. Alice over the course of my cat's illness, and I honestly can't recommend one over the other because they were both fantastic. Dr. Tim was our vet at the beginning of the whole experience and did a wonderful job explaining everything from the diagnosis to the treatment, as well as giving us reasonable expectations about costs. For what it's worth, my cat, who used to wail hysterically during any car ride, now doesn't protest at all about going to JVC. He seems to really love the staff, especially Dr. Alice. Probably the best review you could ask for! We'll be back for all our routine vet care. read more

I'm baffled.... I've spent the morning calling around to veterinarians in the area (after researching them and looking up reviews of course) asking for a rough idea as to how much it will cost me to bring in my Dane/St. Bernard pup to be tacked and neutered. Everywhere else I've called has given me a rough quote..... the woman who answered the phone told me originally I'd have to drive an hour and a half to bring the dog in for a quote and then when I press the matter to have her ask the doctor for a rough estimate, she comes back to tell me they won't even DO the neuter and tack together if I use a friends of animals certificate and won't give a reason for why that is. read more

5+ years later and Im still using Jefferson Vet and extremely happy. Everyone is wonderful, especially Dr Alice.

This afternoon our dog Roger was attacked for the second time while in our yard by a dog being walked on Jefferson who was allowed to roam up to our fence which is over 17 feet from the sidewalk. He was torn up very badly, bleeding and in immediate need of medical attention. Jefferson Veterinary Center who we have supported for over 11 years with our 3 dogs refused to treat him because "we are all full with regularly scheduled appointments". I explained the urgency and they suggested I drive to Madison Heights to an emergency vet clinic there. We barely made it to a clinic on Gratiot and 19 mile with Roger in critical condition. I am outraged at Jefferson and will tell anyone who will listen to never go there again. read more

Dr Tim and Dr Alice are both thoughtful, well informed and sensitive to the animals they treat as well as the animals human family members. They have provided care to my cats who are about 14 years old, and all of my greyhounds. In particular, they have been sensitive to the many problems that one of my cats has had: digestive, infections, and diabetes. They have taught me how to provide the care that he needs. read more

Apparently they've lost some of my dog's records and claim to have only seen him 2-3x in two years but this is not accurate at all!

Since we rescue a lot of hurt, starving and fairly wild "fur people", we are really regulars at the JVC. These are excellent and compassionate vets - - their degrees are from MSU! You can expect the best! You will not find better people to diagnose your pet's ailments (although I hope you won't need it). General pet care is always top notch. The staff is friendly and helpful. We recently adopted 2 puppies, and we had to go through a full round of vaccinations. This week was spay and neuter time (we have siblings). Everytime we go, EVERYONE is so nice and very compassionate. I love my dogs, and I would not trust anyone else with them. Some vets are just there to make money and could care less about what is best for the animals. Dr. Alice is so sweet, and you can tell that she really loves her patients. Everyone here is so stinking friendly! I love the service here, they are above and beyond. The office is very professional and prompt. Check in for your pet to be seen is a breeze, just a simple few questions. I have only dealt with Dr Tim, not Dr Alice. Dr Tim is very personable with the pet owners and handles pets very well. He is whip-smart and very down to earth, even though he is really tall. He explains his concerns and comment about your pet's health so that his is easily understood. Love this place! read more

We have a 10 yr old cat who was feral when we got her. She absolutely will not be held or put in a cat carrier so has not been to the vet since she was spayed 10 years ago. She was in a fight with a neighbor cat and had a huge abscess on her face. I called 3 vets who said she would have to go to an emergency room (all far away) and she would need all her shots. Jefferson was the 4th vet I called and they said to bring her in so we did. They drained the wound, gave her antibiotics and called the next day to check on her. They are the BEST without a doubt! read more

Two visits, two very different experiences -- left with a very bitter experience and will not be returning. First visit -- I needed a new vet upon moving to the city when my 10 year old aussie shepherd mix had a suspected UTI. JVC recommended by a family member in town, so I had a good feeling. Location and office are a little run down, but Dr. Alice seemed to care about my dog (got right onto the floor and empathized with her arthritis). We got my dog all sorted out with some antibiotics, and I also talked the Dr. through my dogs history of UTIs. Seemed like a good relationship and convenient to my house -- not too expensive either. Second visit -- flash forward 2 months, my pup is suddenly peeing in the house again and I suspect another or lingering UTI. I can't fit a vet visit in for a few days, but I can run a fresh urine specimen down to them for labs. I tell the office this on the phone, but they keep pushing for a visit. I tell them it's just not possible because of work, but that we can start with this and I can bring her in if needed a few days later. They say "ok" and I bring the sample down. Once I arrive, I'm asked if my credit card is on file, and I'm asked to wait. Dr. Alice comes out and tells me she can't accept a fresh sample and that she'd "lose her license" if she took it. THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS. Every vet I've ever had has accepted both urine and stool samples from pet parents. Also, this was not in an attempt to get some morphine, it was for antibiotics for a UTI! I was floored. I had a dog with a history of UTIs and was with a vet who had a history of TREATING her UTI, and still there was no service. It is clear to me that this could only be a money grab -- a visit and a fee to collect a sample is worth much more to them than treating my dog quickly, and that is not the kind of doctor I (or my pup) need in my life. Incidentally, I told this story to a friend in town and she recounted a very similar story for JVC. She then pointed me toward the Harper Woods Veterinary Hospital and said the were wonderful -- one visit there since, and I can confirm! Switch or go there first and save yourself the heartache! read more

I usually don't write reviews, but this is an exception! I have been coming to Jefferson Veterinary Center for 14 years, first with our family dog Hunter and now with my own dog Winston. Even after moving 30 minutes away, I still return to them because I know that it is the best care out there. Both vets are so knowledgeable and my dog absolutely loves them. I took my dog Cinder in for a check up, sadly she had an issue with her stomach. The vets knew what to do and Cinder was back in my arms and running around the house. My oldest daughter now says she wants to become a veterinarian because they save doggies. Thankful to have Cinder. read more

Dr. Alice is amazing! Greeting my dog, what's the first thing she does, gets on the floor eye to eye with him. She listened intently when I told her his symptoms, gave him treats and pets...so many pets! The other vet tech was kind and when they took him in the back I could over hear them talking saying what a good boy he was and reassuring him. The only reason they get one less star than perfect is when I made the appointment the office lady was a little brisk with me. She wasn't rude, but not the most friendly either. I almost cancelled but I'm so glad I didn't. The office woman was very kind on our way out though so maybe I caught her on a bad day the first time around, we all have those from time to time. Bonus, they are pretty darn cheap. It was $45 for the standard office visit and $15 for the extra services he needed done. At my last vet, this would have been a $100 or more easy. I'm so glad I went there. read more

For some reason I can't change the 5 stars to 1 star! I had posted a glowing review and must now change it to my dismay after a second trip with our 14 yr. old dog. Dr. Tim was rude, never even physically examined her and had a overall terrible attitude. He said her only problem was being overweight dispite me telling him so only gets 3/4 cup dry food once a day & that's not much for a pit. Turns out she has thyroid issues (took her to another vet) and Dr. Tim didn't even so much as offer 1 test or touch her but sure charged me for an exam. As for my bird, I found an "Expert" in Toledo Ohio, Dr. Susan O and Dr. Tim @ Bird & Exotic Pet Wellness Ctr. who diagnosed my boy with cancer. All that time & suffering should not have happened. We decided to do the right thing by letting him go but PLEASE take your birds/exotics to the real experts and you'll both be better off, a lesson hard learned that still makes my heart break knowing I allowed my boy to be pocked & prodded for weeks while he suffered umdiagnosed. This place is a gem in Detroit. Both of the Veterinarians there are professional, competent, compassionate and truly love animals. They have the best customer service. All the mail you receive will be sent in your pet's name! It's so heartwarming to get a postcard addressed to the cat saying, "Cleo, your fecal floatation test is now due. Please have your owner bring you in." I also love their fun animal facts on their sign they change weekly that you can read while you drive by. Everyone I know who takes their pet there loves it. read more

Dr. Alice and Dr. Tim are exceptional vets in so many ways. They are compassionate, extremely good listeners and communicators (not the case at all with my previous vet many years ago), and they go the extra mile. My old lab has many issues, including anxiety, bed wetting and loss of appetite. Dr. Alice did research over her weekend, called me at home, and so far I have seen marked improvement in my old girl. I will never forget the day that Dr. Alice put my previous lab to sleep and we both cried - and this was before I was ever a client. I called her at home on a Sunday and she rushed to meet me at the clinic to put my dog out of her misery. Dr. Tim is no slouch either - he is extremely knowledgeable and will aggressively work with you to get to the bottom of the problem, whatever it may be. This is a terrible establishment. They are unprofessional, rude and have terrible people skills. I felt they were classist and making assumptions about my ability to pay. I understand that people may not pay, but I should not have to be treated that way. They were not realistic about the prognosis of my dog, I sought 3 second opinions and got him out as soon as I could because they said the way I was being treated was terrible and that the most humane thing to do was to put my dog down. They threatened calling the police because I couldnt pay my bill forcing me into a contract. I made my final payment and they asked me if I wanted to stay on the line to see if the payment went through. Both myself and my dog were treated inhumanely here. The vet Timothy Schacht was so unprofessional reacting poorly to my justified emotions, slamming doors and not offering any dialogue with me, focusing on finances. Dr's Tim and Alice have taken wonderful care of my dogs and cats for almost ten years. They diagnosed a very sick kitty who is still going strong, and helped with two elderly greyhounds as they faced their final illnesses, at different times.
