I just learned over the last few days regarding horror stories regarding Dr Gutman and I'm crushed and so very disappointed. One situation was misdiagnosing one of my dearest friends. After dr Gutman's she visited another surgeon for a second opinion which turned out to be accurate and she did not need surgery. The situation which sealed the deal for me to lose all confidence in Dr Gutman was I just learned tonight, through a slip of the tongue, that while in high school my grandson had surgery for a pionoidal cyst. After surgery wound wasn't healing so returned to Dr Gutman who said it would heal just give it time and he was going on vacation. When I heard that I was very very upset even though it happened about three years ago. My daughter, grandson's mom, immediately took him to pediatrician who examined the would and referred them to wound care center. What kind of surgeon can't recognize and diagnose a wet wound that needs immediate attention at wound care. My opinion of Dr Gutman fell to the lowest score and I've lost all respect for him as a surgeon. His vacation was more important than his patient. With this information please do not put your trust and life in the hands of Dr Gutman. Don't mess with a grandma bear when it comes to her grandchildren. Think he's to preoccupied with his bridal gown designer and he's making bad medical decisions. read more

Posting for elderly father who was misdiagnosed. After two botched surgeries with multiple infections and horrible care, we went elsewhere for extensive wound care and painful lengthy healing. Folks need to report negligent care to the board so it doesn't continue. read more

I don't have a lot of experience with Doctors, but my limited experience with Dr. Gutman warrants a review. About a week ago, I notice some discomfort in one of my man parts, and after inspecting the area for days, I noticed a very small lump toward the top back of my testis (TMI I know). I spent the next few days unfortunately reading hours of information on Google and Reddit, along with hours of video on YouTube. My anxiety was so high, as I was convinced I had testicular cancer at 38 years old. I was able to make a quick appointment with Dr. Gutman after waiting only 2 days. I brought my wife with me, he sat us down, and asked me to tell him my concerns. After doing so, he performed the exam and within a minute, reassured me that what I had was a completely harmless cyst called a Spermatocele. I asked him to please check one more time because I wanted to be convinced. He knew how nervous I was, so he again thoroughly checked the area. When he told me there was nothing to worry about, he noticed that I had kid cash for the visit. Dr. Gutman proceeded to shake my hand and told his office staff to refund my exam fee. I was almost in tears with having the good news along with his selfless gesture. Great guy and I really appreciate him. read more

A lipoma surgery was performed on me exactly 8months ago.Firstly the lipoma(very big in size 15cms still persists and only a part of it was removed,secondly it still pains badly after 8months of surgery .When i asked the doctor about it, he told we might have to operate again to remove the rest of the lipoma.After the surgery I visted the hospital for 1-2 months and by the end of second month he told me that anither surgery has to be performed because only a part of it was removed. Ipersonally feel that I should have checked for second opinion before getting operated,because getting operated again and again is the thing that no one prefers .Multiple incisions,scars,stitches are the things which no one wants to get repeatedly done . Iam writing this review because I've seen all good reviews about the Doctor and have proceeded further which really backfired me and trust me I'm still suffering.Apart from that the doctor is friendly and staff was prompt in replying. read more

My laparoscopic bilateral hernia surgery with Dr Gutman went very well. Spoke to Brisa to make the appointment and she was a lot of help giving advice before the surgery. At the consultation with dr. Gutman he seemed kind of rushed (like almost all doctors ) but explained the operation and questions well. His anesthesiologist, don't remember his name, was told the most trusted one there, did a great job. Woke up not feeling like I was going to puke, just normal pain from the surgery. It's been over a week later and I'm feeling pretty good. Seems like less pain every day so I'm sure it was another good job by Dr Gutman. Dr. Jeffrey J. Gutman is an outstanding General Surgeon. He truly provides quality services to and for his patients. He also is renowned for specialities as noted on his CV. He is very conscientious with excellence in follow-up, post-operatively. In addition, he knows and appropriately refers those patients who need a higher level of care to specialists, like Pulmonary/Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Infectious Disease when patients of his (rarely, I might add), need to be transferred from a general surgical post-operative unit to an appropriate transitional or critical date unit. My overall rating for Dr. Gutman is a 20/10, having worked with him many, many night shifts in these capacities: Medical/Surgical/Recovery RN, having received his patients many night shifts (from 7pm to 7am-sometimes as late as 7pm to noon the next day) directly from Surgery, with Dr. Gutman in attendance; as the RN Charge Nurse in a Medical/Surgical ICU that serves critically ill patients in the same San Jose, CA, acute care, in-patient hospital; as a Rapid Response RN who served and attended to all of the patients at said, same hospital and who needed to confer with Dr. Gutman-he was available and answered his pages immediately when he was on call and was always available and ready to come in to check on his patients, in the middle of the "night" and at any hour, with totally appropriate/excellent responses/referrals and care. Dr. Gutman performed an excisional biopsy on me almost 4 weeks ago. The fibroid was seriously the size of a flattened golf ball, but it's healing really well and I feel like he performed the surgery very precisely, stitching up the wound keeping in mind the way my body would heal and how it might look after. The scar is hidden very well and won't be noticeable at all over time. For the scale of the removal, I was surprisingly mobile afterward. To top it all off, he's a really nice guy with gentle bedside manners. That really helped in the hospital immediately before we rolled in to the operating room.... It was my first surgery and I needed the reassurance! Overall I highly recommend Dr. Gutman and I'm glad I picked him to slice me! Hehe :) read more

Dr. Gutman is an excellent surgeon. He is very experienced and thorough. He repaired my hernia and did a great job and would recommend him. He's done thousands of them. His staff was great: friendly very thorough, efficient, accommodating and professional and felt very comfortable throughout the process. There was very little waiting. So why the 4 stars? I think he could improve upon his bedside manners. In recovery I spoke to him briefly and he seemed very rushed. While I was finishing my last sentence he was already walking away. His staff was more engaged and was able to answer most of my questions. I felt that he really should spend at least 1-2 quality minutes listening and acknowledging. Those few minutes would have dramatically improved the overall experience. However what matters most is that he is extremely experienced and qualified. So do not let his lack of bedside manners stop you from seeing him. His staff more than makes up for it. read more

Recently had to visit Dr. Gutman, to have small surgical procedure on my lip. Office staff was very friendly & helpful. Dr. Gutman is one of Silicon Valley's best. Dr. Gutman repaired two incisional hernias for me in 2015 and last week I went back to Dr. Gutman to repair another incisional hernia. In both cases Dr. Gutman and his team did an excellent job. In fact, with the operation at Good Sam Hospital last week when I woke up I really didn't need a lot of pain medication. My recovery has been quicker and easier than I expected. Yesterday Dr. Gutman took the Steri-Strips off my incision and told me not to lift anything over 20 pounds. I feel great and now I don't have to worry about going in for emergency surgery in the future. Dr. Gutman is easy to talk to and gives clear explanations. Everyone at his office has been very responsive whenever I called. Although I hope I never have another hernia, I am not afraid because I know Dr. Gutman can repair it for me. read more

Dr. Gutman performed an emergency surgery to remove my ruptured appendix and an abscess. He was very cooperative with my GP to be on call until all the test results were in to confirm the diagnosis. Dr. Gutman thoroughly explained the severity of my condition and immediately took care of all the arrangements for my hospitalization at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was compassionate, reassuring and seemed very concerned with my well-being. The surgery was very skillfully done and my recovery was rapid and hardly any scars noticeable. If I should need any other surgery, I would definitely want Dr. Gutman to be my surgeon. read more

After a mammogram showed an abnormality I was referred to Dr. Gutman for a surgical biopsy. When making the appointment I was told by staff that I didn't need to fast or any other prep, that I would only need a local anesthetic and that the procedure would be done on site. When I arrived for the appointment, I was told that Dr. Gutman was "stuck in surgery" and could I return the following day? I wish they had called me since I drove 20 miles to get there, but O. K. these things happen. The next day, to my surprise, the visit was only a consultation. Dr. Gutman seemed very nice and asked the requisite questions. He said that the surgery would be "very minor" but none the less, I would have to check into the hospital and have a general anesthetic. The appointment was set for the following week at Good Samaritan Hospital. A couple of days before the procedure I was contacted By Dr. Gutman's staff and told that I would have to go to another location to have a wire inserted into my breast and the be driven to the hospital to be admitted for the remainder of the surgery. This sounded nuts. I don't know why Dr. Gutman didn't mention it first but I felt under the gun so I went along with it. Later that day I was contacted by Good Sam and told how much would be my portion of the payment (I have and expensive PPO). It seemed exorbitantly high and they neither knew how much the anesthesiologist would charge nor the surgeon's fee nor the bill for the first facility. It seemed that it would add up to be in the thousands. And this is for a "very minor" procedure. This was my snapping point. Throughout all this the story had changed so many times that I had incrementally lost trust in the doctor and the hospital. They are capitalizing on patients fear of cancer by gouging them. And the very idea of having the first part of your surgery at one location and then being transported to another location for the second half ... well, I cancelled it. Now I have to start all over and find a doctor to do a J wire surgical breast biopsy for a reasonable price. Or take my chances with the cancer. read more

This office is extremely unhelpful. I was referred by my Oncologist and the receptionist is very unhelpful. I am being told they don't take my insurance even though it is listed under my carriers website. Angela the receptionist refused to call Insurance carrier to confirm. I was referred to Dr. Gutman for a hernia procedure, from the time I had the consultation to the procedure, I felt confident and reassured with Dr. Gutman's knowledge and skills. He was thorough with the explanation of the procedure and the pros/cons of having the procedure. He ensured I was comfortable with the procedure he recommended and allowed me time to consider what I wanted to do while encouraging me to call with any additional questions. I called 1 week later and booked my surgery with Dr. Gutman. Before the procedure, Dr. Gutman went through the details to make sure I understood what he was doing, I was confident it would go smoothly and it did - he was efficient and it was painless. He called within 3 hours of me leaving to ensure I was recovering well, go over recovery questions and to remind me of things to do to have a speedy recovery. He made sure I knew to not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns. Dr. Gutman was amazing from start to finish! I would highly recommend him to anyone for surgery. I have shared my positive experience with so many of my friends and have found other patients of Dr. Gutman who had the same experience. Let's see, Doctor Gutman is everything you want in a doctor- not arrogant,listens,does NOT need your money so does not recommend drugs and surgery 2 minutes after talking to you,( I speculate this not based on the expensive cars in the parking lot but on the incredible amount of gallbladder removal surgeries I read he performed!-thousands!) .....Dr.G.has credentials up the wazoo and is the kind of Doc you can tell do other things necessary for medical survival if you were stuck on a dessert island post a plane crash and this guy was on your plane as one of the survivors! He's not the Skipper or Gilligan I'm certain of that! I'd go to this guy for a tooth ache or broken finger or haircut if I thought my insurance Co.would pay him and if I didn't have insurance,I'd go to him for these things anyway if I had more income! Also-if "dead doctors don't lie" and die at an average of age 65 in this country....due to poor health and lack of taking care of themselves,well,Doctor Gutman does not look like a Shamoo with yesterdays Vietnamese soup on his collar from not washing his clothes or coming within ten feet of a female in months either-he appears completely normal and under 18% body fat!! Went in to outpatient elective surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital on a Friday. Doctor Gutman was very professional, and the procedure was only 20 minutes. The following day was pain killer day, the next day no pain killers, and the third day I was back to work. One week I was released for general exercise. I've had a cyst in my neck for 20 years!- I kept asking doctors to remove it as I knew it was just a lypoma/ fatty tissue cyst that I've gotten before. I went through needle biopsies, several sonograms/ultrasounds for years and nobody would remove it. I went to Dr. Gutman and he asked if I was okay with needles and if I had 10 minutes...LOL. in 10 minutes he had it removed!!!- a quick lunch time surgery a couple stitches and it's done! Wow! What a 24 hours! We met Dr. Gutman yesterday for a consultation and 4 hours later he was removing my husband's gall bladder. I find it absolutely laughable that Dr. Gutman has received 1 let alone 2 "5" star reviews. In my experience with Dr. Gutman he was one of the most non-present, least helpful, leat professional surgeons I would ever hope to encounter in my lifetime. One year after the most horrific experience of my life, I still cannot bring myself to say anything remotely positive about the man, his staff or his hospital. In fairness to the Dr., the first time I met him was 6 weeks after he botched my father's surgery and advised me to "pull the plug" because it was in my father's best interest. Thanks for showing up Doc, I just wish you would have made at least a half-hearted effort to rectify your mistake before my father went into cardiac arrest and ultimately bled to death. I don't have a problem with someone not being good at their job, but MDs are not accountants, they are surgeons/trusted advisors and when they make mistakes people die. And in my opinion Dr. Gutman is not good at his job. My suggestion: look elsewhere. read more

I do not recommend Dr. Gutman. His umbilical hernia repair on me didn't even last a year, and it's supposed to last a lifetime. On his consent form it even says there is a less than 1 percent chance of recurrence. When he examined me the first time, he had me stand up and pull up my shirt. Although there was an examination table in the room, he never had me lie down. He simply felt my stomach for about 20 seconds. It was like preparing for a major surgery while getting necklaces at Mardi Gras. When I visited with another surgeon who fixed Dr. Gutman's error, he had me lie down and palpated me for 10-15 mins to determine the limits of the hernia--an important task because I believe Dr. Gutman placed the mesh in the wrong place (and/or used a too small piece). The hernia recurred when I was a very trim weight (i.e., no pressure on stomach, wasn't pregnant. I had a previous hernia whose repair lasted three years until I was deeply, deeply basketball-sized pregnant). Significantly, this hernia recurred EXACTLY where it was before Gutman fixed it, above my bellybutton. When I visited Dr. Gutman to confirm the recurrence, he started talking about the hernia as if it were below my bellybutton. When I corrected him, he looked confused. The surgeon who fixed Gutman's error reported that his mesh was still in place--and the hernia recurred one measly centimeter above its limit. When I had previously asked Dr. Gutman, "Would this have recurred if you'd used a bigger mesh?" he laughed and said, "Probably not!" He *laughed*. What a cavalier response to a debilitating and expensive surgery. Someone in the medical field told me Gutman is known for being "fast"--i.e., careless. Gutman charged literally twice the amount that the fixing surgeon charged (both used a surgical center, not a hospital). Forest Surgery Center, where Gutman performs surgery, was appallingly dirty and disarrayed upon entrance in the building. I filled out an evaluation form afterward expressing dismay at going in to have an antiseptic procedure in a building that radiated filth. Perhaps they've addressed that by now. Finally, some of you may like to hear this, but I found it unethical. On two separate occasions, Dr. Gutman offered to perform a tummy tuck on me (vanity operation) and bill it as medically necessary, as a follow-up to the hernia repair. People like him are why our insurance prices are so high: we are funding other people's plastic surgery. In short, I would run far from this surgeon. There are plenty of wonderful surgeons in the area. He's not one of them. read more

In short, I am a very recent patient of Dr. Jeffrey Gutman and I would not recommend him, nor will I ever use Doctor Jeffrey Gutman again for anything. If you would like to know why, please read on... Double Inguinal Hernia repair surgery preformed recently, did not go well at all. Dr. Gutman spent only about 10 minutes doing the entire surgery and beat me up with little care of outcome in the process. I suffered fairly extensive internal bleeding and a great deal of unexpected pain and swelling after surgery. After removing the bulk of bandages as instructed on day two and seeing this serious and unexpected outcome I called Dr. Gutman's office and asked to speak with him. I was told if I wanted to speak with Dr. Gutman I would need to set an appointment and come to his office to see him. He refused to speak with me and I was forced to set an appointment and make an office visit about these serious concerns and negative outcomes of the surgery he just did. I had to go back to his office a few days after surgery. When I saw him he spent less than 5 minutes with me and said the hernia was worse than he thought it would be, usually this does not happen and there is nothing he can do about, it should get better in about a month. No one ever called to see how I was doing after surgery and when some serious unexpected outcomes surfaced after the surgery and I called, worried and no one would speak to me, or call me back about this. If Dr. Gutman, as he indicated found a much worse hernia during the surgery don't you think he would have spent a little more time with the procedure and followed-up to find out how I was doing after? I was treated like a piece of meat with $$$ attached; more time spent on me, less $$$ in his pocket. I am now and will be suffering the pain and lengthy outcome of recovery due to his lack of patient care or concern. I will never use him for anything again and recommend seeking out someone else for these type of needs that has some care and concern for patients; not the case with him or his surgery center, National Surgery Center. Dr. Gutman is The Best Doctor you will ever find! (I have worked as a medical transcriptionist for over for 20 years for many physicians/surgeons in Los Gatos and they all speak of him very highly!!
