I saw Dr. Youn about five years ago and had an incredibly negative experience. Now that I have received the care I needed from a more caring doctor, I feel it is important to share my experience with Dr. Youn so others can make an informed decision before seeing him. I scheduled my visit to discuss complications following a surgery in another state. Upon meeting Dr. Youn and telling him about this issue, I had my medical records in hand, which he refused to review. When I asked questions about how I can rectify my issue, he claimed he couldn't provide answers because he didn't know my medical history. If a doctor doesn't take the time to review records when offered, how can they provide adequate care? Beyond the lack of professionalism, his bedside manner was shockingly cold. I was met with dismissiveness and impatience, as if my concerns were an inconvenience. The entire interaction was incredibly rushed, with Dr. Youn giving a quick exam and giving little answers, seeming eager to leave the room before I even had time to ask questions and get dressed. Adding to the frustration, there was no patient portal or direct way to communicate with the doctor outside of limited phone hours, which is highly unusual for a medical practice. It's possible that this has changed over the past few years. Shortly after posting my review on Yelp and writing a letter to Dr. Youn, I received a call from him. He did not apologize for his behavior, but he did spend thirty minutes speaking with me. He asked me to read some information to him from my medical history (something he refused to review when I saw him in person), and he gave some insight. I found it convenient for him that he gave me the care I needed after sending him a contentious letter and publishing a public review, rather than providing the care I needed when seeing him for an appointment. So why am I deciding to publish this review now? Accountability is important. Seeing that others have had similar experiences, it is clear that Dr. Youn's aloof behavior has not gone unnoticed. I encourage him to make a significant adjustment. read more

5 Stars for Dr. Youn 1 star for his admin. I'm writing as a family member who picked n took him home from the clinic. I HATE waiting when he's ready to be picked up. Half an hour was counted after he sent me a pls pick me up text. He sent it after Dr. Youn's review, changing clothes, etc. I hope people in the clinic know waiting is not just waiting. I was thinking bad result and failed procedure (happens I hear). It's like I love my Dr, but I don't appreciate her calling me directly after running my tests. I now have a second thought after this experience and bad Yelp reviews, knowing there are other good Drs. FYI~~~ There were all kinds of refreshments in the waiting room (not for patients I assume), and I tried to indulge myself with H2O, ended up with carbonated kind. Really not sure why these people say his bedside manner is incredible. He's got to be one of the nastiest providers I've ever been to. Granted, I've been a client of him for years, and several years ago he was kind-- something has happened in the last 2-3 years where he has become short, tactless, unempathetic and condescending. He is not deserving of these ratings on good bedside manner. He is a damn good doctor though, but he is honestly frightening to be around. I was his patient for many years. Received reminder this may , made appointment in august and received 4 reminder phone calls. arrived on time and was told THEN he doesn't take United health care starting THIS year. He doesn't get paid. I totally understand doctors have any right not to take certain insurance BUT i was only notified on THAT August day!!! This is the worst experience I have ever had with any healthcare front desk staff. Very unprofessional front desk staff who lack respect for patients and act condescendingly. One receptionist asked me, 'We need the insurance card, front and back--do you have it?' as if I wouldn't understand such a simple request. Another receptionist reprimanded me in front of other patients, saying, 'Next time you're here, make sure you're on time because that delays the doctor's schedule.' When I asked when I had checked in, she admitted she didn't know. I clarified that I wasn't more than five minutes late, to which she dismissively responded, 'Yeah, but all the paperwork took extra time.' Her smug attitude and insincere apology--'I apologized already; I don't know what else you want me to do'--made the experience even worse. Completely unprofessional behavior. ***UPDATE*** After my initial review of this..."Dr.", I needed a follow up colonoscopy to ensure everything internally had healed correctly. In an effort to appease my family, I stayed the course with this guy and allowed him to perform the colonoscopy- although I had offers from other Doctors to perform the procedure for me. MY MISTAKE. Although the procedure went well, and a small polyp was removed, I was very taken aback that he chose IMMEDIATELY after my procedure, while I'm still recovering from the anesthetic, to attempt to confront me about my initial review in front of my entire family. How, entirely, unprofessional and unacceptable! I will NOT be using this doctor any longer! I am switching to a different doctor. read more

The wonderful physician Dr. Coughlin, whom I was a patient for several years retired this summer 2021. As a colon cancer patient with numerous colonoscopies under my belt I was looking for a physician who is trained as a specialist in colorectal diseases. It is important that he/she demonstrates interest in me as a patient, would take the time to listen to my concerns and explain things within the context of my history. Dr. Peter Youn listened carefully and took the time to explain in detail what to expect and the post procedure process. Once again there were polyps to remove. I was very pleased he provide images post procedure. He visits his patients just before the procedure and during recovery. This is not always done at other facilities. One previous experience I had was with a large northern California multi-clinic medical practice where you did not meet the physician. On the initial visit I asked if I will see a physician. I was stunned to be met with irritation by a nurse and a physician who was in the vicinity. I was informed "that is the way we do things here". Unfortunately, I had a post procedure complication requiring hospitalization. In hindsight I should have terminated the first appointment. That is not the case with Dr. Youn. Each time I saw him he provided an update and asked if there were questions. Dr. Youn listened carefully to my medical history and concerns during my first office visit. I like his suggestion of adding psyllium as a fiber supplement. I am very pleased and would not hesitate to returning for a colonoscopy in the future or even colorectal surgery if needed. Dr. Youn's staff is outstanding from the moment you first enter the office. Each person is extremely friendly, professional, kind, and helpful. Their adherence to Covid protocol is on point. I choose to have the colonoscopy procedure at El Camino Health: Los Gatos Campus. I cannot say enough about the excellent care from each and every person I met be it admitting, nurses, assistants, OR manager, transporter or volunteer. My experience was exceptional. I started seeing Dr. Youn in February of 2015 after having a 2nd attack in 3 months of diverticulitis. Dr. Youn explained to me in detail, what exactly was happening and why. His knowledge and communications skills are impressive. For the next 16 months I saw Dr. Youn off and on as I battled with ongoing flare ups. After several treatment options over that course of time, we came to the decision it was time for surgery. Having never had surgery before, expect having a c-setion, I was a bit nervous and scared. Dr. Youn a few days before surgery spent time with both my husband and I explaining exactly what he was going to do. He went over everything in detail and made sure to answer any and every question we had. He was always open to me calling him and any time of day if I had any questions. The day of my surgery, 7/6/2016, I was very nervous while being prepped. Dr. Youn has the BEST bedside manner I have ever experienced in any doctor. He assured me that everything would be okay and that he would take good care of me. For the next week and I recovered in the hospital, he visited me at least once daily and was never in a hurry to leave and go see the next patient. He made sure that I was okay, answered any questions if I had them, told me what to expect for the day, etc. After I was home and had recovered a bit, I went back into his office for him to do his final check up on me. Again, he was thorough and professional. I cannot say enough about his expertise and guidance through this long process. His nurse Jenn is also amazing! She was always nice and accommodating and helped out in any was possible. I highly recommend Dr. Youn and will continue to see him for my routine colonoscopy. read more

Dr. Youn is an excellent physician and surgeon, one of the rare few who also possesses empathy, kindness and compassion. It's been about three years since I was under his care for an, ehm, 'sensitive' issue. I was frightened, nervous, embarrassed and overwhelmed. Dr. Youn and his fantastic staff took care of my body and my freaked-out mind, answered my millions of questions (and answered them again when it all went in one ear and out the other), and guided me through everything that was needed to get me well. At one point, Dr. Youn felt it was important for me to get a second opinion, and suggested I go see a Stanford doctor. While I'm sure Stanford gives terrific care, I couldn't have felt less comfortable there. I was a number, not a name or person. I had to negotiate the confusing roads of the campus to find the clinic. I struggled to find parking, and then, yep, had to pay to park. I had to check in with a harried front desk clerk, and then I had to wait. And wait. And wait. The consult with the Stanford medical student, and then again with the actual doctor, felt rushed and lacked in any human connection. I listened attentively to the Stanford doctor's recommendation, but I opted to return to Dr. Youn, and we proceeded with his suggested plan of treatment. Dr. Youn's practice provides a best-of-both-worlds solution. You will get excellent medical care, in a small-town caring atmosphere. You'll park with 50 feet of the door, and the staff will probably know your name when you come in. Yes, I know that seeing a doctor about your bum-holio isn't fun, but Dr. Youn and his staff will take excellent care of you. read more

From my last review I mentioned that I had family history of colon cancer. My auntie died at 40 in asia from colon cancer. She did not go to the bathroom for about 3 weeks and used enemas and thought everything was okay. By the time they found out it was colon cancer it was too late. My older sister has fibroids in her uterus and the OBGYN had told her that she was too young for a colonoscopy, but since she was a registered nurse she pushed for a colonoscopy and found growth in her rectum and it had to be removed. That's when I decided to go see Dr. Youn for the first time last year. Last year he found "adenoma polyp" which has a good chance of being cancerous in the future if it were to grow bigger. Needless to say, this year I needed another one. Dr. Youn wanted to monitor the growth and make sure that this polyp did not grow at a fast rate. This time around he found 2 more polyps that were very small. The reason why I think he is so good is because these polyps are so small that when I saw the pictures I could not even identify them as polyps. I had seen Doctors cut them out when I was in my nursing rotation for school, and I never seen many doctors remove polyps that looked as small as mine. Dr. Youn has a really good eye and is very detail oriented. I attached pictures just so you can see my polyps. I can't believe he found them. Again, I did not remember anything and when I woke up I was back in the waiting area. Dr. Youn makes colonoscopies so easy. He is not ego-tisc like many doctors, super down to earth and so knowledgable. You will not be sorry if you go see him. I am so happy that I found him from reading all the positive reviews on yelp. The bowel prep he gives you doesn't taste that bad either. Just go to safeway and mix the bowel prep with those no calorie flavored sparkling water beverage and it just tastes like soda. Stay home after you drink it because you will be in the bathroom all day. Dr. Youn also has coupons for the bowel prep so if your insurance doesn't cover it make sure you ask the front desk girl Jen for some. She is also super nice. read more

I recently had a colonoscopy with Dr. Youn. As everybody says in their reviews here, he's just great. Everything went very smoothly and professionally, and I couldn't expect more. Also, the facility he used, Silicon Valley Surgical Center, was excellent, too. The only thing I was not happy with is the receptionist in his office. She had a chip in her shoulder. I had been struggling with severe GI symptoms for months and my primary care provider was passive and slow to help me get relief / referrals. Luckily, my dad, who had recently gone to Dr. Youn for a routine colonoscopy, recommended that I contact Dr. Youn directly to see if he could help me figure out what was going on. Dr. Youn met with me right away and almost immediately was confident that I had ulcerative colitis. After a diagnostic colonoscopy this was confirmed and Dr. Youn followed up with me to make sure I found a specialist to help me with my follow-up care. When I admitted I didn't love the specialist I had found, he recommended me to his own GI specialist as well as a few others. He emphasized that I should get follow-up care right away and to contact him if I needed anything to expedite that. How rare to have a doctor who will follow up with his patients to make sure they are taken care of! I had been so stressed throughout my months of undiagnosed symptoms, it meant so much to know what was going on and to be confident that I had an advocate - someone on my team. Dr. Youn is great, but the office staff is challenging. I went to Dr. Youn for a second opinion and within minutes, he identified my issue and set me up with a physical therapist (PT). That is when the problems began.. it took 5 weeks to get a prescription filled as the PT and Dr. Youn's office were communicating, then the doctor's office sent the wrong prescription to the wrong pharmacy, etc. As my symptoms did not abate, and were impacting my work and sleep, I called to get a follow on appointment and have to wait another 5 weeks. When I explained to the receptionist that my symptoms are not going away, the reply is "oh.. well you are set for 5 weeks from now".. so, basically deal with it. read more

It's hard to not use too many superlatives when complementing Peter and the folks at the Silicon Valley Surgery Center (where he does the procedures). He's performed four colonoscopies on me. I tell him that he and his staff make the procedure almost fun and almost make me look forward to the next one! :) OK, I don't look forward to them. But when I do need one Peter makes it as easy and effortless as possible--always keeping a smile on his face and offering good sensible advice for making the prep easier and effective. The nurses at the surgery center are also friendly and caring, wanting to make the process as comfortable and effortless as possible. That and I get to sleep through the whole thing! I'm very happy with my experience. Dr. Youn was very calm and explained everything fully. He resolved my issue with much less complexity than I expected, very relieving. Once, I came for my appointment and was not fully prepared for treatment, so he didn't charge me for the visit. My husband had been dealing with a fistula for over six years. Doctors in our hometown were not willing to help heal him and said it would not be possible to heal the fistulas. My husband was in soo much pain. We then relocated to Palo Alto. We found Dr Youn on Yelp. When we met him he was extremely eager to help my husband he then devised a course of action plan. I came to Dr Youn on the advice of a colleague and after having been to this office previously. My prior dealings were with Dr Coughlin. I had a specific problem and needed help since a prior doctor ran out of ideas to assist me. He gave me two suggestions to try and both were game changers. Dr Youn knows his subject matter well. He also suggested I schedule a colonscopy. Having had more than a few of these since a relatively young age I was not eager to do it again. I listened to his reasons why and decided to go ahead with it. I'm glad I did. The last procedure was done in 2016. Dr Youn removed several polyps during this colonoscopy. It gave me peace of mind and now hopefully I won't have to do it again for at least 3 years. Dr Youn is very patient, listened to every question on had on both of my follow up visits. He gave me some great suggestions for a psyllium fiber. I appreciated he was soft spoken as the subject matter was difficult to discuss. He took time explaining what the initial problem was and how best to correct it. My after care for the colonscopy was outstanding. I received a call from his associate Dr Coughlin who gave me the results for my colonscopy and he listened very patiently as I asked a few additional questions. I was having an issue and he answered those questions as well. A day or so later Dr Youn called me back to make sure my issues were handled and reassured me. I hope he's still practicing when I need to have my next one and I am still living in Santa Clara Valley at that point. I may have to fly in just to have him perform it. I am writing this review to stress the importance of having a second or even third opinion with RELEVANT specialist doctor/surgeon related to your body part. Please do not jump to decision immediately if some general doctor says that a issue can be fixed with surgery. Please consult a specialist to make sure and also get an MRI. I hope my experience helps you and you don't have to suffer like I did for almost year. I consulted Dr. Youn after a failed surgery. Originally, I saw general Surgeon Dr. Carla Cassani from PAMF mountain view, she told me that she can get rid of my issue with a surgery and it will heal completely in few weeks and I also can go to work after just 2 days rest after surgery. Long story short..I should have known better to get second opinion from actual colon-rectal specialist instead of general surgeon who made it so much worse for me. I had to go through hellish experience of several sessions of extremely painful cauterizations insisted by her and still not heal. Lucky for me, she was unexpectedly out of office for my scheduled appointment and I had to reschedule with another PAMF surgeon, who, instead of cauterizing me, told me that surgery might have failed and ordered MRI...and the MRI showed that the issue is not fixed by the surgery and thus the outer incision did't get chance to heal and told me that I should see colon-rectal surgeon (I really wish Dr. Carla Cassani told me this earlier before she operated on me or during the painful cauterizations I had to endure..). Finally, I decided to see colo-rectal doctor and found Dr. Youn on yelp (thanks to God). Dr. Youn explained how to resolve the issue by drawing and showing various options, first option being least invasive, both I and Doctor decided to go with it. I had two surgeries done with Dr. Youn. First one to let it heal properly (The PAMF general surgeon insisted there was nothing wrong with her surgery and kept cauterizing me several weeks continuously as the incision wouldn't heal and close; It is not closing because the surgery failed and instead of admitting to that she kept going on with painful cauterizations week after week) and Dr. Youn's second surgery was to fix the issue. Dr. Youn has great bedside manners and always ensured that I am not in pain during his examinations. His analysis and advice worked out great for me. He used to return my calls later in the day and answer and explain my questions and concerns post-surgery. The front desk staff are ok, they are busy and you might get mixed experience when communicating with them. I found some of them very helpful and others not so much. Finally, I like to thank Dr. Youn for his help and insight in fixing my problem with his surgical skills and knowledge...I am glad I found such a great Doctor. My issue is completely resolved and I am back normal now and it feels great! Most people know to do the right thing and which surgeon to go with when opting for surgery...but, I made a mistake of making wrong choice, blindly trusting a general surgeon even though I was suffering for long time before eventually getting it fixed by the right doctor. Please take charge of your health by finding the right doctor for your needs and try to see if second opinion or specialist appointment makes sense before you decide to get surgery. Dr. Peter Youn is my new hero. After having suffered for months with hemorrhoids, I finally chose his clinic based on Yelp reviews and was given an appointment with him. From the first meeting, I was duly impressed with his professional and calm manner. It may have been routine for him but he took plenty of time to thoroughly explain the situation and the options, some of which were administered during a subsequent follow up visit.
