Not on any meds, have all my teeth and never a major surgery so you can trust my testimony. I've had several yrs. of excruciating pain shooting thru my upper back all the way down to my toes. I've been diagnosed with Sciatica, Arthritis and body misalignment. I've had Chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, even holistic therapy, but nothing worked until I was recommended to Dr. Darin Awaya at Kuakini. After just one MRI and Xray, like a Wiz, he knew right off what caused all this pain I had for years. None of the other "professionals" saw the cause let alone how to eliminate it. Then, after having the surgery when I took my first steps, I realized all the pain was completely gone. Ultimately, I was able to return to normal activities which I had to cutback: household duties, Power walking, Aerobics, hiking & traveling. Dr. Awaya knows his craft. He's a knowledgeable, no-nonsense, truthful professional who is dedicated to helping people get back to normal. I am living proof of that.

Since being diagnosed with a couple…read moreof serious health issues since 2022, I have formed a family of my own from the myriad of compassionate healthcare providers I have been privileged to have on my team, since retiring back to the islands. Especially since my own family of 8 siblings have all passed. I was the youngest and am now 76. Sadly, they all passed from cancer or heart disease. My dad died when I was one of heart disease. My mom was a diabetic, suffered heart disease and sadly succumbed to Alzheimers towards the end of her life. I tell all this to confirm the seriousness with which I write a review for Dr Kane and Wendy. To finally meet the most compassionate medical care practitioners is karma coming back to me for the positive energy with which I try to live my life now. Dr. Kane is a caring human being first; a doctor second. He is the first doctor who let me tell him about myself first. My thoughts and anecdotal history about my symptoms. Before he went into his medical expertise. No doctor before him has ever shown as much interest in getting to know the person behind the ailments. How refreshing to feel seen. And then really heard. Being the youngest of 9, I often felt invisible. And in those days, "children were seen and not heard." Dr. Kane explained the reasons for my symptoms regarding my right knee pain. Thankfully, it was not a recurrence of my meniscus tear from 2017. It was just a little irritation to a bit of arthritis. Thank God! Trickier is my recurring frozen shoulder. But Dr. Kane delivered what I had hoped he could. Because of breathing issues to do with one of my diseases, I should not have anesthesia. So, my shoulder will be anestathized, not me. I will immediately follow up with PT. Thank you, God! For Dr. Kane and Wendy, who handles everything with such grace and amazing speed. I love them both. Like ohana. Hugs and much aloha to both of them. Millie Vierra

I had a total left hip replacement done there TODAY! The front desk receptionists were clear and helpful. Check in was quick. I was called back just a few minutes before my check in time (I was a bit early) First off, I am very picky because I am in the healthcare field also. So keep that in mind. Every person that talked to me from my pre-op nurse to the anesthesiologist to my surgeon's team to my scrub nurse to my recovery nurse was SAFE!!! They checked my name and my date of birth to make sure I was the correct patient. They were also so engaging a honestly appeared to be so happy with their job that translates to better patient care. In my book, patient safety is PARAMOUNT! They were all knowledgeable about the procedure and answered my questions throughly and without any hesitations or feeling rushed. The facility was very clean and inviting and was grateful for a relaxing calm atmosphere. Surgery went well and was able to ambulate with help of my recovery nurse to the bathroom...and also ate some cheese crackers and water. Made my discharge goals pretty quickly and I was out the door! Loved this place. Loved the healthcare team there. I feel like they have a great team and they are happy there. That's a kind of feeling that is difficult to fake. And if your healthcare team is happy, you WILL get better and safer care.

Didn't want the customer to slip so I took the initiative to bring the drinks to their table. I didn't know colleague mopped in front of our work station and both legs flew up as I exited the swinging door... Torn rotator cuff. After x-rays and an MRI, took some time for worker's comp to approve this procedure and the day finally came. Was given explicit instructions prior to this day and after following them, I checked in at Minimally Invasive Surgery Hawai'i (MIS), which is located on the 6F of Hale Pawa'a. MIS is state of the art surgery center which has a team of professionals who perform orthopedic, musculoskeletal care and spine care procedures. I've never experienced this before and didn't know what to expect so I found myself asking my sister, who has 30yrs experience as a registered nurse, with questions. My concerns were alleviated as I believed in professionals and their knowledge and expertise. I was informed by the office of Dr. Darryl Kan and complied with the instructions provided to me. Upon check in I had my RN sister accompany me just in case I needed clarification and to ensure a smooth process. To be frank I was somewhat concerned as there was not one other patient in the check in area. It was just my sister, myself and the staff behind the counter. I was escorted to the back where I changed into a gown and received instructions as well as the attending professional reiterated today's procedure. Once again, nerve block was explained in simpler terms where I understood. It scared me but once again I had to trust the process. When it was my turn, I was rolled into the operating room where Dr. Kan greeted me in an upbeat manner and briefed me on what's to come. This was done over 8 months ago so I don't recall what happened after except finally waking up to some noise. The nurse (?) greeted and checked up on me. I was a little groggy and she must have read my mind as I was thirsty and hungry. I was offered an array of drinks and some snacks to choose from. When I was post groggy stage, the staff called my brother in law as he was designated to pick me up as I'm not allowed to drive after my procedure. I remember presented with non-slip socks and escorted to the 1F via wheelchair. Overall, I am very pleased and satisfied with MIS as they walked me through this process that was nerve-racking from the get go. From Dr. Kan, his staff and the staff at MIS, I was treated with great care and professionalism.

While Dr. Noh has good bedside manners, his office staff are incompetent. After my initial…read moreconsultation, I was instructed to communicate with his assistant, Megan, for all further accommodations... except Megan didn't reach out to me so I called the office several times. Most of the time they don't answer the phone. After I finally left a voicemail and hadn't heard back in several days, I resorted to messaging them via their Contact Us page. Then someone other than Megan called to tell me Megan would submit the paperwork and reach out after insurance approved it. Fast forward a few weeks later, Megan calls to schedule me for surgery 11 days away. That's fine, except two weekends and Thanksgiving are a part of those 11 days, land she says they need the results asap, so I had to rush around to get 3 pre-op appts done in two days. Okay... except I go to get my neck scan done and they say they didn't get my referral. I left, came back a couple hours later, then I was instructed to return the next day because "sometimes it takes a bit to come in"... I go back the next day, and they Still don't have my referral. Then Megan is calling me to tell me I need to get the scan done. WOW. I finally had to tell her I don't know what they expect me to do, I go there and they don't have the referral but all you all can tell me is that you sent it and will resend it. Well obviously they're not receiving it so why do we keep doing the same method? Also, they clearly do not care for their patients if they know you need spinal surgery but don't mind having you drive back and forth for a few days to the hospital, park, walk to the lab, sit and wait (sitting was painful pre-surgery btw) every time. It's no surprise that they called to ask me to push my surgery back a couple of days. I don't see what the rush was anyway - they had me wait for weeks, then all of a sudden (after they know they'll get their money) we're in hyper speed mode. Fast forward to Post surgery and they send me to get scans Again. Different lab and guess what. Same story. I messaged the office and the person there was very short with me but sent the printout to my email to show the lab. Now I have a $400 bill that I'm seeing for the "first" time and the invoice states I'm being charged twice for late fees. I paid upfront for my portion of the surgery, why would I dodge a much smaller bill and be "late"? Also, I have no idea what the bill is for (X-rays are paid separately to the labs). I called and messaged the office numerous times to confirm. No one answers the phones and they haven't responded to my messages for the past week. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. I recommend you find a different provider that cares.

He went over my options on if I wanted to choose surgery or possibly a different avenue. We talked about recovery time and how the surgery could affect me positively or negative in the future. We also discussed different avenues of pain management. When I decided to hold off on surgery his office referred me to another doctor where I have schedule an epidural. Everything was done in a quick and professional manner. I'm hopping that I'll have great results with the epidural and find some pain relief there. I had a great experience with my visit with Dr. Noh.

When I arrived for surgery, I was told by one of the nurses, that I was lucky, he was the best surgeon, and she worked with all of them. I'd rather have the best doctor, who's a little cocky, than the worst, who's as nice Mr. Rogers.

I still have pain but it's tolerable and manageable now and I can work full days. Dr. Kaan is not the warm and fuzzy type but when it comes to surgery his work is incredible. I've been apart of support groups and seen a lot of surgery pictures and he's extremely accurate and he bends the the hardware to match a more natural curve so it's not so straight that it causes more pain. My scar is actually beautiful and he takes extra time to make that happen. I had Kaiser at the time and Kaiser dropped the ball on my pre and post care. I didn't do enough due diligence on my part but it was frustrating. They were supposed to take me off birth control and I ended up with blood clots. The hospital put me on thinners too soon causing hematomas all up and down my spine and they didn't take me seriously when I told them something was very wrong. My husband had Dr. Kaan come in and there was a debate on what to do. They ended up putting in a DVT filter but never checked my lungs or anything. Once I got home I couldn't recover and then they found the PE's in my lungs so that was pretty scary stuff. It felt like Kaiser and his office had very poor communication but at the end of the day I am alive and well and the work Dr. Kaan did was worth the battle. The only thing I would have done differently is be more prepared myself and ask more questions and understand the real risks and what to do in case complications happen. You really have to take some responsibility when it comes to your health because doctors are just people too and a lot of them are over worked and doing the best they can. Always have an advocate stay with you. My husband saved me so many times I lost count. My brain was pretty messed up for a while and I couldn't figure out what was what. Like I was in a foggy dream and timeline's didn't exist. If you get a good nurse be extra kind to them and communicate about the details of this surgery. I looked like a normal, young, healthy female so sometimes they didn't understand the severity of the surgery I just had and my husband had to be there just to make sure they moved me gently and not like a rag doll. I grew 2 inches and somehow it caused a hiatal hernia that made it almost impossible to stand for a while. Kaiser told me it was just acid reflex and I knew for sure it was something else. I was so disappointed with Kaiser I actually switched my insurance and I'm glad I did. Kaan is not with Kaiser just to be clear. They contract him out. He's 100% the right man for the job. Just remember he's focused on the mechanics and keeping you alive and I am fine with that. The rest is a collective effort that includes yourself. Lessons learned!
