We were getting the run around trying to schedule a tattoo appointment with another studio (who shall remain nameless) during our girl's trip to San Angelo this past weekend. We called Jelly's and the told us to come in as walk-ins the next day since we had smaller pieces we wanted to get inked. We were lucky enough to get to meet Jelly and Ember. They showed us around their unique, morbidly awesome studio and told us the history of the house. We got to pet the kitties that Jelly is fostering out back as we waited for the templates to get mocked up inside. It was like hanging out at a friend's house. They made us feel very welcome and comfortable immediately. They listened to our wants when it came to the art and let us change the placement of the template multiple times until we were perfectly satisfied. They included us in conversation rather than talking over us with each other like other studios. I got to hear both their life stories-incredible. We were tattooed by Ember, who although she looked young, was cool enough to have The Mask playing when we came in. ("Cuban Pete" is still a banger.) I don't know if it was the movie playing or our friendly conversation, but 5 small tattoos were completed before we even realized it with minimal pain. (and her line work is great!) She completed a tattoo I had created for my father. I cried when I saw the finished product and she asked if she was allowed to give me a hug and thanked me for trusting her with such an important little piece. I simply loved this little chick and her vibe. Jelly knows her shit. She can tell you everything you need to know about pre-care. after-care, what happens if you're breastfeeding or pregnant and the dangers of what can occur. She's blunt but kind. I've been getting tattoos for years and she was the most educated artists I've met. My best friend and I traveled 6 hours each to meet in San Angelo for our girl's weekend and we've now found our favorite studio! Too bad it's so far away for both of us. I'm already trying to make plans to get back over there for new art. :) Easy to say, we left with our hearts full and our new art looking great! read more

Jelly is awesome. She explained everything thoroughly where I could understand. She kept everything clean and sterile to prevent infection. I had my first tattoo that I got from another facility 11 years ago that took an hour. The guy didn't explain anything . Didn't give me instructions to care for it. Jelly gives out written instructions and explains the aftercare process. She brought my old tattoo to life and corrected the other artist mistakes. Jell does quality work. Wow! Jelly did a great job with my tat. She's great at getting what you want and how you want it. She's very knowledgeable and has patience. I'm from California and I visit San Angelo twice a year. I'm already thinking of what I'm going have her do next time I here. Her shop is clean and it's got great character, love her shop. I did visit a couple of other shops and one them said they would call me to schedule an appointment, never got a call. Other one didn't look clean. I highly recommend The Surly Skull. Victor did a great job in assisting Jelly get setup. Checkout her art on the website. I can go and on, but words don't do enough justice. Gotta go get a tattoo here. Jelly gave me my third tattoo. I went in with an idea from Pinterest that i wanted, and Victor did a great job modifying it to match the style and size of an existing tattoo. I have never had such a gentle tattoo! I experienced NONE of the pain i had with the other two. Jelly is also very conscientious regarding after care. She will give you all the information you need to care for your tattoo during healing and beyond. Call her if you have a question later; she's interested in making sure your artwork heals and looks good. Pay attention to her instructions! Mine healed beautifully and quickly. The shop is lovely. The way it is decorated, cared for, and loved is a testament to Jelly's approach to the art of tattooing. The shop is hygienic and clean; the health of her clients is as important to Jelly as her art. And she is so much fun! read more

I went to help my sister in San Angelo because she recently had a heart attack. We decided we wanted to get matching tattoos that would symbolize not only the fact I'm her older sister and she's my younger sister but also wanted it to be a heart because many of oh our family members have suffered heart problems and succumbed to them. My sister has tattoos but this was my first so I was super nervous. We called one place and was quoted a price for appointments Monday and Tuesday and we went to make the appointment for those days was told the special ended on Sunday and the price had gone up . We decided not to go there. We went to a second place and they were so full but they said they would try and fit us in. We never got a call. I saw Jelly's work on her page and on fb and knew it was totally fabulous and then I noticed that Victor was giving $20 2x2 tattoos and knew it was fate. We stopped by and both got out matching heart tattoos. The next day we came back and both got matching hummingbird ( our grandmother's favorite ) tattoos. We love them and are so pleased. Jelly is definitely one of the most pleasant people I've ever met. She's friendly , knows her craft and with her medical knowledge made me feel at ease with everything that was about to be done. She is so talented , just look at her work. She's a true artist. Victor was actually the one that gave us the tattoos. He is very meticulous and super sweet. He made us both feel very comfortable and it was a steal at $ 20. As my sister said , I've got the bug now and even though I live near San Antonio I will drive to San Angelo just to have it done at Surly Skull. read more
