However, once you find the arena, parking in the West Deck Parking Lot is plentiful and free (happy dance). Once you find parking, please note there will be stairs to climb to get to the entrance. In our case it was four flights, and a considerable walk uphill to the entrance. On a chilly fall day this wasn't the best for my mom who was with us. Once inside, the arena is well lit with bold signs marking the seat sections. It is clean and the seats are comfortable and easy to find. On the day I went, there were no concession stands open and many of the gates were closed. Folks were lined up at the lone vending machine station, and there were cones directing the crowd flow. It had an after hours sort of vibe to it. As if they were not offering the full "Halton" Arena Experience. Having said that, I didn't get to see this venue for all it's probably worth, but it was fine for seeing my nephew's showcase. Finally, I didn't require the use of their restrooms facilities, so I can't comment on how the bathrooms are kept. So as Forrest Gump used to say, "that's all I have to say about that."

I regularly return to my former campus for…read morefootball games and other sporting events, fraternity functions, and College of Engineering volunteer opportunities. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (CHARLOTTE) is a public research university and part of the University of North Carolina System. It is classified as an R1 "Very High Research Activity" institution, reflecting its significant research output and doctoral education. In Fall 2025, CHARLOTTE enrolled over 32,000 students -- approximately 26,200 undergraduates and nearly 6,000 graduate students -- making it one of the largest and fastest-growing universities in the state. CHARLOTTE offers a broad range of academic programs across multiple disciplines, with around 79 undergraduate majors spanning arts and sciences, engineering, business, computing, and others, along with more than 150 graduate and professional programs. As an R1 university, CHARLOTTE emphasizes research and innovation through strong partnerships with industry, government, and the community. The university ranks among the top 30 U.S. institutions for career outcomes and return on investment. New degrees in sports analytics and artificial intelligence continue to expand CHARLOTTE's academic reach. Students benefit from internships, research opportunities, study-abroad programs, and strong post-graduation employment outcomes. The campus itself is a major asset. It offers excellent venues for meetings, events, athletics, and alumni engagement. During the Fall 2025 season, I attended every home football game, including tailgates hosted by the SigEp NC Nu Alumni and Volunteer Corporation. I also attended a men's soccer match -- and what a season it was. The CHARLOTTE 49ers finished 8-4-4, captured the regular-season conference title, and earned the No. 1 seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. They advanced to the semifinals, where a dramatic nil-nil match against FIU was decided by penalty kicks, with Charlotte narrowly defeated 11-10. In December, I volunteered at the William States Lee College of Engineering Senior Design Expo, held at the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC), which includes the 9,000-seat Dale F. Halton Arena. I've attended basketball games at Halton Arena for years, but I had no idea how impressive and versatile the rest of the facility is. I helped check in alumni, business leaders, and academic staff for lunch, which was hosted in a beautiful suite of rooms on the third floor. Meanwhile, senior engineering students displayed their projects on the main arena floor. It is an outstanding venue for academic and professional events. Greek life plays an important role at UNC CHARLOTTE, contributing to leadership development, service, and campus engagement. The university is home to a wide range of fraternities and sororities representing social, professional, and service-based organizations. These chapters are deeply involved in philanthropy, community service, and student leadership across campus. The strength and professionalism of Charlotte's Greek community reflect the university's broader emphasis on character, service, and lifelong connection referred to by the university as the "Gold Standard." Sigma Phi Epsilon has a strong alumni presence at CHARLOTTE (Sig Ep NC Nu), and we also have student Brothers actively chartering a chapter on campus. We recently held an executive workshop in one of the meeting rooms in the Student Union. Sig Ep's Balanced Man program is unique to Greek organizations and will benefit the university and student Brothers. Like many of Charlotte's academic, athletic, and student facilities, the Student Union is impressive -- modern, well-designed, and comparable to professional conference centers I've experienced throughout my career. It was perfect for the Sig Ep Executive Workshop. UNC CHARLOTTE continues to grow and achieve excellence, just as the City of Charlotte itself has emerged as a premier urban and economic center. The university proudly brands itself as "Charlotte's University," and that identity truly fits. The William States Lee College of Engineering, in particular, has gained national visibility, climbing steadily in U.S. News & World Report rankings. Its graduate programs in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering rank among the top 100 nationwide. The college is also home to one of the nation's most highly regarded motorsports engineering programs -- a perfect fit for the Charlotte region. A truly great university in a great city!

They also offer an incredibly affordable education when compared to other schools. They are constantly improving the campus, but some areas are given more attention than others. Overall, the buildings are usually incredibly clean, the landscaping is always gorgeous, and there are so many resources we have access to as students. Just know you will have to figure things out here yourself at times but truthfully there is a place for everyone here.

Even though it was after Christmas, it was still an awesome experience. I truly wish more people knew about because it is so worth the time the money. It's the largest Christmas expedition on the East Coast and we've had great memories both times. This is our second year going and we enjoyed our time this year more than the first. The first part is you driving in your car as you see all of the super cool light fixtures while listening to Christmas music that corresponds to the lights. The kids (and us), we're in love with the different themes that we saw along the way. Very vibrant and bold colors that really don't do it justice through a camera lens. It's something you truly do have to see in person to get the full picture. There's also a movie playing on the Jumbotron that you can listen to while you're riding around or you can park and watch the movie with your family. This year we did the VIP skip line for $96. I will say that it seems as if in the VIP there wasn't as many light fixtures while riding in the car as there was in previous years. I'm not sure if we seen less exhibits because our route was shorter. That would be our only complaint. You do pay by a car/ van so I would say if you could take as many people with you in one vehicle. Once you get to the halfway point there, there's an area where you can park and then you can get out. Here is part two where you go to all of the different vendors that are inside the heated area. There's so much to do. You can take pictures with Santa. You can get your character made until cartoon portrait . There's free events where kids can make Christmas ornaments win prizes color take pictures with the themed Christmas tree trees (that were so so cute by the way.) They had a bar for the adults and hot chocolate and popcorn for the kids. When you go outside of the tent, there's part 3, a world with outdoor activities. There is an area for Christmas carols tubing that had artificial snow. Theres bonfires with s'mores. Ann area with a bunch of food trucks to choose from. There's hundreds of photo opportunities where there are huge, beautiful light fixtures that you can walk and see along the track. It's literally something for the entire family to enjoy or even a date night if there's something that you would like to do. This is something that my family will continue to do in the years to come.

Typically we avoid holiday crowds (that's to keep the season merry, ya know?), & I'd heard from other friends that the crowds this year were excessive. However, I would recommend going to this on a weekday that isn't too busy or too close to Thanksgiving or Christmas. Was a unique and fun way to hang in the car celebrating yuletide while watching artistry of lights and music with friends. Was exciting for the men in the car to know we were driving on the actual speedway too. Glad our driver didn't take us up on to 'high bank' of the roads as he promised to do earlier. Know that you won't be able to hop out of your car to take pics or use the bathroom there, and there is no swag to purchase. (Would have loved that option as a unique gift for friends.) Note: If you go, you're supposed to turn your head lights off so they don't detract from the light show. Was a bummer when folks kept theirs on, because the headlights would sometimes be blinding! Also note: If you go during a wknd- which is more expensive- there is a place for kids to go (& I'm guessing you can THEN get out of your car). They also usually show a Christmas-themed movie on those nights...not sure how exactly that works, but sounded fun.
