(Jul 2026). The sunset on the lake was lovely 8:30-8:40pm, and we eventually drove further along the lake towards the sun. You could also circle to a beach and outhouse halfway up the east side of the lake, turning from Manley onto Glen Lake Rd going north past the first parking area, or from Manley onto Bridger Vale Rd, continuing south to the beach parking.

The true summit is actually about a mile further and there wasn't an indication that I was on the summit but I checked the map this time. I took the Bridger foothills trail down and I did the easy M trail up this time, all of which felt a lot easier. However it was a long day! I clocked about 14 miles and 7K elevation. It was a beautiful November day with only a few small patches of snow.

Aside from the historical aspect of this site in the Lewis and Clark expedition, there are other reasons to stop and visit: campsites, foot-trails, and rafting, and picnicking. Plus, during the summer there are speakers available from the park service and the nearby University of Montana. Headwaters is a busy park, there's always something going on, but if you have the time, it's a beautiful park to explore, see wildlife, birdwatch, hike and maybe even kayak or raft down the rivers.
