Begur is…read morethe nearest town and we enjoyed exploring its Castle and the surrounding Mediterranean beaches. This is one area Gayle really wanted to spend more time, particularly regarding a side trip to Cadaqués that never happened. In fact Gayle would have gladly cut a day off our Barcelona plans to stay here longer. Maybe next time? Begur is small (~4000 inhabitants) and is an important tourist attraction in the Baix Empordà. During the summer, the population can exceed 40,000 people. Gayle and I were here in October and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The Village has an important historical remnants that go back in early history. The Castle of Begur is a good example of medieval remains. The Town of Begur also includes Esclanyà (with a Roman town centre), Aiguafreda, Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Aiguablava and Fornells. Some of the most prestigious beaches of the Costa Brava can be found here. It was too cold to frolic in the water, but the scenery and crashing waves were outstanding.

The camp is beautiful, loads of grassy areas 3 pools to chose from, a short distance walk from the beach and town. The caravan itself was reaaly clean and spacious. We went as a couple to a 4 birth caravan which came with air conditioning kitchen a decked area outside with garden furniture and every thing else you could need. We got a September deal which was buy a week get a week for free and the caravan hire cost us £240 for two weeks. Also bare in mind that that cou;d easily be split between 4 people. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a quiet holiday for cheap. The kids will love it.

When presented with the opportunity to attend a special friend's birthday party in the other side…read moreof the Atlantic, we hesitated for about 3.5 seconds, and then quickly dove into the travel plans. It was literally a royal couple, our friend being the daughter of a Spanish Marquess (in fact his complete title was: and a Marquess of Tejada, Bailiff Grand Cross of Justice and Member of the Deputation of the Constantinian Order) was dating the Duke de Girona at the time, and for her 30th birthday, her boyfriend decided to celebrate a 4 day party at a medieval castle in the outskirts of Barcelona. So in order to stay close to where the main festivities will be held, we booked a room along with many of the guests in the Hotel Arc de Monells. This is place is nothing short of magical and spectacular, nestled in the medieval Catalonian town of Monells the building is a historical building made of stone but completely modernized inside with comfortable rooms and beautiful decor while maintaining its quaint and historical feel. The service was always fantastic, as a matter of fact, on the night of the 18th Century ball, we were having trouble getting a cab to come out to pick us up and the concierge gracefully drove us to the castle not even accepting a tip. Our room overlooked to roof of the new building which houses the dining area, pool and spa, a modern glass building with a lush green rooftop garden, it merges with the local scenery of green fields and beautiful forest perfectly well, without disturbing the feel of an idyllic place that you may find described in local folklore or tales. Our life purpose is to return to Girona, an area where many professional bike riders call home because the terrain and the weather is perfect for training for the spring classics, we will come back with our bikes and definitely stay at the Arc de Monells.

It was a lovely hotel with wonderful spacious rooms, outdoor patios and a pool. There were few dining options in the quaint little village, but fortunately the restaurant at the Arcs rivaled a 5 stay restaurant at a 2€ price - he Baked Cod and Salmon were delicious) Visit here, get to known the owners, and bask in the history of Monells and the surrouding mid-evil towns.

Having our own suite provided us with all the privacy and comfort we needed thanks to the large size apartment they're contained within. They not only provided us with a great spa to relax in, they also went to great lengths to provide us with plenty of vegan food for our diet. Staying in a smaller family-run hotel was a huge advantage as there was always a smiling face at hand to help us with everything we needed, so we never felt like just another room number. If ever we return to the Costa Brava, we won't think twice about booking in for a second time.

We didn't expect much in terms of breakfast. My boyfriend and I travel a lot for work and this is the best breakfast we've had that we can remember. I had to try everything and geeze was it good. I would live here if they allowed it.
