This is one area Gayle really wanted to spend more time, particularly regarding a side trip to Cadaqués that never happened. In fact Gayle would have gladly cut a day off our Barcelona plans to stay here longer. Maybe next time? Begur is small (~4000 inhabitants) and is an important tourist attraction in the Baix Empordà. During the summer, the population can exceed 40,000 people. Gayle and I were here in October and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The Village has an important historical remnants that go back in early history. The Castle of Begur is a good example of medieval remains. The Town of Begur also includes Esclanyà (with a Roman town centre), Aiguafreda, Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Aiguablava and Fornells. Some of the most prestigious beaches of the Costa Brava can be found here. It was too cold to frolic in the water, but the scenery and crashing waves were outstanding.

(Full disclosure: I write this review in April 2015, yet I vacationed at the hotel in August 2014. I chose the hotel based on consistently high reviews from many past years online and I wasn't disappointed by the least, so I would be highly surprised if the quality suddenly dropped and my review was not relevant anymore. I think it's better to write a few months old review than not have this great place added to Yelp at all.) Anyway, let's get to it: PROS: - The hotel is within the first line at the beach, with direct access to the beach from the pool side. You think - 'what does it matter, I can just walk a minute or two to the beach, right?' Wrong! At Santa Susanna, firstline really pays off, because from the other hotels, you often have to walk quite far down the boulevard to first find a pedestrian underpass to get across the train track. It's just incredibly comfortable not to have to make this journey every time you need a bathroom or something from your hotel room. - Cuisine, cuisine, cuisine! Fantastic dinner buffets with excellent variety of fish, seafood and meats. The breakfasts buffets have a large variety of cold meats, fruits, various types of granola, pastries, pancakes, etc. Resistance is futile; do not expect to be able to watch your weight at this hotel. - Don't be discouraged by the boxy outside design - the rooms interiors are modern and clean, with big beds, and a really pleasant massage shower with various settings in the bathroom. - There is a nice and clean big pool with complimentary parasols and deckchairs. - Families with children will appreciate the constant animation program at the children's pool, a children's playground area in the garden, and the evening animation programs. CONS: - When I was there, the reception staff had a bit of trouble with English communication. - Just like many higher end hotels, the hotel charges extra for wifi. - No complimentary parasols at the beach. - While it's utterly possible to enjoy your own peace and quiet and relax above a cocktail in this hotel, if you are looking for a romantic getaway free of children running around, you should be aware that this hotel is very popular with families and thus might not be ideal for you. Overall, I had a great time at this hotel especially due to the excellent location right at the beach and the mouth-watering Spanish and international cuisine. Highly recommended.

Having our own suite provided us with all the privacy and comfort we needed thanks to the large size apartment they're contained within. They not only provided us with a great spa to relax in, they also went to great lengths to provide us with plenty of vegan food for our diet. Staying in a smaller family-run hotel was a huge advantage as there was always a smiling face at hand to help us with everything we needed, so we never felt like just another room number. If ever we return to the Costa Brava, we won't think twice about booking in for a second time.

The train station in Santa Susanna is not that exciting apart from it being set in an old tower,…read morethere are many dotted around the resort in the hillier parts, some round, some square. It is situated right opposite the Hotel Mercury and has a taxi pull in outside and a ramp for wheelchairs or wheeling your luggage up. The trains run through to Barcelona and along the coast to diverting away from the sea towards Girona. The trains do not go through directly though to Girona, you have to change but its and easy one. The trains run fairly regularly, are on time and are clean and the fares are amazingly cheap. If you fancy a change of scene you can nip on the train to Malgrat or any other of the resorts for a day or evening, do check the times of the last train back though! The early train to Barcelona is great for catching an earlyish flight however do make sure you get to the station handy as they do not open the ticket booth until a couple of minutes prior to the train arriving and you have to buy your ticket and validate it before boarding. Luckily we had got there early enough to be at the front of the queue or we may of missed the train. The machine for validating tickets is just across from the ticket booth on the platform, its simple, you just put your ticket in and it puts a date and time stamp on it.

We'd asked for a balcony and got one with a not so pleasant view of the other building belonging to the hotel. The walls are thin so you can here most of the neighbors. Everyday we came home to a properly cleaned room with new linens and towels. The pillows were too big and uncomfortable. We had problems with the toilet making a lot of noise and were offered to switch rooms when we talked to the owners about it. The owners were super friendly and helpful with restaurants, buses etc. Unfortunately the breakfast buffee hadn't started yet as we were here just before the low season (starts 23rd of june) which was a shame as we had gotten the impression it would be included in the price.
