First of all, because some people get MELS and Queens Metropolitan mixed up, I want to clarify that they are two completely separate schools. They have nothing to do with one another. There are actually 3 schools on the same campus: a District 75 school (special education), MELS -Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School (middle school and high school), and Queens Metropolitan High School. They are three separate, independent schools. I didn't know how good Queens Metro was until my child started going there. He's an excellent student, he was in an honors class at Russell Sage and he had a GPA of 97.5 and high state tests scores. Yet, he didn't want to take the SHSAT. We didn't push for it (well...not too much) because we knew that Metro was a good neighborhood school and we were ready to transfer him if things didn't work out. As it turns out, we are gladly surprised that it is better than we expected. We're so happy we made the decision for him to go to Metro; the more we learn about it, the more we like it. Not only the environment is very welcoming and containing for the students and families, but the teachers are top notch! They are highly educated, young, energetic, engaged, good communicators, with high expectations and a passion for teaching. The principal, Ms. Rodriguez Tabone, is pretty new in the school. She is coming straight from Stuyvesant High School, where she used to be the Assistant Principal! This is her second year at Metro and she's making the school better and better. She's an amazing leader, committed to strong academics, making the best of every student and taking the school to the next level. She's bright, approachable and efficient. The school is getting grants and is transforming a trip to Costa Rica (which students can take at any point during the 4 years) into a community service trip. They have several clubs and varsity sports. They have AP and College Now courses. Now, there are kids at Metro who got into Bronx Science and Townsend Harris and chose to come to Queens Metro, and recently kids who were in other Specialized high schools for their freshman year who ended up transferring to Queens Metro because they didn't want to put up with the commute, having a great school in their area. That's how good it is. A lot of kids in the area end up going to the Specialized High Schools. Metro is a great alternative to that. I hear horror stories of kids from other neighborhoods who are excellent students but were not matched to a good school. We are so, sooo lucky to have Metro in our neighborhood

They gave us a tour of their changes and I love how modern the locker rooms, lunchroom and labs have become. SFP is such a big school with small town feel and I really began miss my days there. I came here tonight for their carnival and today was their 2nd day so definitely check it out as tomorrow is the last day. My friend purchased 20 tickets for $25. Our first ride was the Ferris Wheel...I haven't been on one for 11 years since the Toys R US (Times Square location). When it started to spin, I freaked out and gripped the pole tightly as my friend was making sure that my heart didn't leaped out lol I couldn't help myself...I screamed at the top of my lungs lol We had 8 tickets left and it was perfect to ride Swing...this ride was better and not so up in the air. After we got off the ride, damn we both felt so dizzy. I treated my friend to Chuck's Shoot Til You Win...nice each cup has a number written inside the cup and my friend still won something but mad small lol My friend treated us to Whac A Mole and how rude he beat me by 30 points...of course, he won a snake stuff animal. We did a fire safety tour where they taught you how to protect yourself during a blazing fire. Very informative and got a firefighter hat for my friend's son. Overall we had a good time at the carnival!

My three children received an excellent education at the school and went on to be awarded scholarships for both high school and college. They are now amazing adults. I know that this is in no small part owed to the education they received during their schooling from Nursery through 8th grade at OLBS as well as the welcoming and nurturing environment found there. When it came time for my Grandchildren to begin their schooling I was very happy that their parents chose Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Academy. The principal is fantastic. She is a true professional who cares for every student. There are many volunteers who work tirelessly to not only raise funds for the school but also build a community among the parents and run events that benefit the students. Enrollment is always growing which is a strong sign that the school is well loved has a positive reputation and following. The school has invested in the academic program, technology, the facility. There is a wonderful full time security guard on the premises and an up to date cameras system to keep the children safe. They also have a professionally trained guidance counselor available to all students. All of this in addition to a top notch music program, enrichment activities and other learning opportunities that will round out the children's skills and prepare them for the future. I highly recommend OLBSCA to anyone who wants their children to get an outstanding education in a caring and safe environment. My grandchildren would not be there if their parents had any reservations! They had a great experience there and chose for their children to attend for that reason!

A ton of programs here including dance, law, and math and science. A ton of elective and unique offering that include yoga, fencing, fashion design, sports law, astronomy and forensics (TO NAME A FEW!) This is definitely the place to find yourself and hone in on your interests in preparation for college. College is PUSHED here from freshman year and teachers and guidance counselors actually help and prepare you in every aspect. This place has an overall great morale and school spirit- sports are really big here as well. Overall, I had a great "traditional high school experience"- in conclusion big schools work, I would not have had the same experiences or opportunities if I went to some school thats 1 floor with 100 other kids. Bard Queens is the second of its kind, a public high school with an accelerated program that takes 2 years to complete. The second two years are for college-level work (and, indeed, kids graduate after 4 years total with both a HS diploma and an A.A. degree from Bard College). Those 2 years of college credits can be transferred to some 4-year colleges, giving kids who want it a huge savings in both time and money. Kids have to take a placement exam (not the SHSAT) to qualify, but even if you do well, it's hard to say whether BHSEC Queens is for you. It's a small school, and sports are not a huge part of the culture here. It's in an unlovely part of LIC, close to Laguardia Community College and various subway lines but not much else. Writing is very important; you don't have to be a great writer at 14, but you should probably be open to improving in this area. Those are the caveats. The benefits of this school are enormous. The quality of the faculty is extraordinary: Most have PhD's, and they are devoted to teaching teenagers, constantly available to meet with them and provide extra help. The administration is terrific, and the office well run. The building is modern, well kept, and light-filled. The student body is quite diverse and active in a variety of clubs and activities. College counseling is just beginning for my child's class, but things seem pretty organized. The classes are small and most are seminar-style. Lots of discussion, lots of back-and-forth in the classroom, lots of writing (see above). Expectations are high; you're expected to work hard and be intellectually curious. If you want big lectures, multiple-choice tests, and anonymity--forget it. The BHSEC model has expanded to Newark, Cleveland, and New Orleans. Clearly, there's a demand for accelerated HS education. For the right kid, these schools will be life-changing. As with any educational choice, the key is to know yourself.
