Absolutely loved visiting the home of Jiffy mixes. I can't believe all these years later I would find myself in the town that created so many baking memories with my Nana. It was such a cool experience being able to walk in and buy a couple cases of the products that Nana and I used to Make together. You have probably seen Jiffy Mix in the baking section of the grocery store. Surprise! It's made nearby, and they give free plant tours. They will schedule a tour for even one person. Just call. It's more fun with a bigger group. On the day I went, there were also students from the EMU Biz School. You can't miss the huge Jiffy Mix silos at the railroad tracks on the north end of Main Street in Chelsea, MI. Keep going north of the tracks. Turn west onto a side street. You'll see signs that say "Visitors." Park in the lot and walk across the street to the main entrance. There are some very friendly employees to greet you. First you'll come into a small auditorium where you'll be offered some baked goods and something to drink. Next you'll see a silly little video featuring Corny, the talking Jiffy MIx box and Howdy Holmes, the president and CEO of the company. Kids will love this. I even chuckled a few times. I don't know if it was because of the B-school students, or if Mr. Holmes personally takes time out of every day to meet visitors, but it was a real treat to get to ask questions about the company, and get his take on running a successful business. He said that when they take on new employees, 70% is what kind of person they are and 30% is what kind of skills do they have. He waxed philosophical about how this is all just some big experiment in behavior modification, oh, and they also happen to make muffin mix. I was very impressed by him, and it made me love the Jiffy Mix company even more! Oh, and one side note: Jiffy Mix does not spend any money on advertising. They put their efforts into creating a fresh, delicious product instead. The plant tour is probably the best advertising they could ever have. Then we were offered a very low-key chance to get up and buy a sample pack of mixes to take home. Don't be shy. Jump up and go into the little side room where they can ring you up. The small set (12 boxes) is $6 and the big one (24 boxes) is $12. Of course I'm going to want some to take home and share. They also have t-shirts, etc. They'll have it waiting at the end of the tour, so you don't have to carry it the whole way. The equipment is a bit loud. Employees wear ear plugs, and so did I, because my ears are so sensitive to noise. I keep a pair of earplugs in my purse just in case. Oh, and I was wearing Dansko clogs, which were a bit slippery on the painted cement inclines. So best wear rubber-soled shoes if you have any difficulty walking. If you are fascinated by machinery, this is the best part. Watch as one after another piece of cardboard becomes a box. Then the liner goes in. And then the mix. How do they keep it all straight? There are elevated conveyor belts that route the boxes all over the plant. Pretty cool. Some parts of the process are totally automated, others have a person keeping watch over the machines. Jiffy Mix employs 300 people. After you complete the tour, they give you a sample bag with a recipe book (modifications based on the original box mixes) and a couple of boxes of Jiffy Mix. We got brownie mix. Hubby was thrilled to see me bring those home. You can always go back and enter the front door if you want another sample box of mixes. Taking the Jiffy Mix tour with Corny is highly recommended! Sandy and Micky from Jiffy greeted all of us warmly and made us feel welcome. Everyone who had signed up ahead of time had their last name on the tv screen to greet them upon entry. Complimentary small bottles of water and coffee were made available to all of us prior to the ~20 minute introductory and history film of Jiffy. There are approximately 20 stairs to climb and descend for the tour. Not sure if there is ADA accommodation available. Our tour guides told us there was about 800 feet of walking through the plant on our tour. We all received complimentary gift bags at the end. Great history on the Holmes family who own Jiffy and on the company itself. Good to see a local family owned company continue to thrive for generations. read more

Great local company with food I've been eating and enjoying for many years. Now that I live 45 minutes away, the tour has been on my radar for many years. With my son, now 11, this was the year. It is a great tour enjoyable from elementary to adults. The movie gives you the background with a fun character.and Workers give you a chance to purchase gifts, and all of their yummy products. The factory tour starts off at an area that has the original 1930's equipment fully functioning and ends with a more modern computerized area. You watch boxes being made, mix added to smaller boxes and packages getting ready for shipping to stores and loaded on trucks to deliver. And while on the factory tour, your items are being sorted and boxed up to be ready for you on the way out. In the past, homemade treats were given to those attending the tour but due to allergy issues especially with school groups, that has been eliminated. Swag bags are given at the end to all that attend. The tour guides are friendly and helpful. The best part is its a free activity. Reservations are required and phone number to do this is on the website. Really loved this tour. read more

I love factory tours, so I was excited to find that the Chelsea Milling Company gives tours. I emailed the company and asked if it was necessary to make a reservation for just 1 person, and they said yes, so I called to do that. Yet, when I went there, 2 parties who were not registered joined our group. As we walked in, we were offered coffee, bottled water and mini raspberry muffins (which was the flavor mix they gave us). We then saw 2 videos: the first about where the wheat and corn comes from and how it's milled, etc., and the second about safety and what you cannot take into the factory. They were a little hokey, but I think that's required of factory tour videos. Because it was a Friday afternoon, only about half the plant was operating, and they seemed to be having some trouble in a couple areas. I enjoyed seeing the operations, and we were fairly close to them. I also caught the eye of a couple of the workers, and they were all friendly and smiled back at me. I was surprised that the tour did not end in a gift shop, as almost all tours do. We had the option right at the beginning to purchase goods, but since nobody said they wanted to, we only saw the sales desk as we walked by. I do think they do themselves a disservice by asking people if they want to make purchases at the beginning, rather than having the tour end with that option; I might have wanted to at the end. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and she was very taken with the only children in our group -- 6 year old, redheaded twin boys. She chatted with us before the tour (we talked about other companies' tours) and made little comments throughout the presentation and tour. When I brought my significant other back to my hometown we took a tour of the Jiffy mix factory for a hoot. Everybody was really nice and informative as you'd ever expect. They showed us a classic slide presentation from circa 1970. We loved it. We left with some snazzy T-shirts and couple of boxes of mix. Really, if you want corn bread tonight, what mix are you using? My husband and I happened to have a day off together during the week and decided to leave the Detroit area and take an afternoon tour of the Jiffy plant. We've done a few factory tours before and the folks at Jiffy have done an excellent job of crafting a fun tour that is safe and interesting. Jiffy muffins were the first thing I learned to cook when I was a kid and they have a fond place in my heart, so this experience was really great. The other reviews have done a good job detailing the basic experience, so I'll talk about what I found special. -Our tour group had some students from a local college who were in some sort of quality control program. The tour coordinators suggested that they might be able to see if their staff involved in that area could take a few minutes after the tour and chat with them, but no promises. By the end of the tour, they let the students know they were able to get in touch with someone to come speak to them - how nice! -A staff member from the production line toured with us. I'm not sure, but it sounded like she was asked to take the tour, so perhaps all the staff do at one point or another (which is just a good practice in my book). By the end she was chatting/laughing with a few ladies from our group and then took photos with them. You could tell it made the experience more special for them, but really just showed how friendly the staff were. -The tour guides were very nice as well. When waiting for the start time, they made a point to say hello to everyone and ask them where they were from, how they knew Jiffy, etc. Jiffy doesn't advertise (!) so this question is more revealing than you might think. All in all, a great experience. And the tour pack of mixes was a great value. We've been baking Jiffy products probably one every week here in my house since we went. I can't wait to take my inlaws, who seemed enthusiastic at the prospect of coming along next time. Call them up, book a spot, bring the kids. :) read more

I grew up on Jiffy mixes, and it was a treat for me to visit their factory in Chelsea. As the other reviewer noted, the do provide tours of the factory. Unfortunately, the factory closes the first week in July, the week I was visiting, so I didn't get to take a tour. I've heard they are great though, and an informative glimpse of manufacturing as it was done before almost everything was imported from China. At the end of the tour, you get a free box of muffin mix and have the option to buy a t-shirt with campy, but endearing, slogans like "muffin better" and "muffin but the best." oh, I also heard they get all their wheat from Michigan farmers, so when you buy Jiffy you know you are supporting the local economy. read more

If you're passing by Chelsea on the highway, I highly encourage you to stop here! This tour felt like you were going over to a family friend's home-- the tour guide and other employees who greeted us were so friendly and hospitable. You can really tell they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. You watch two videos to start-- which pretty much shows you the entire process. You then walk through just a small portion of the factory where the product is put into boxes. You then get to leave with a cute little goodie bag of two boxes of mix, a recipe book, and a few other knick knacks. While this was a wonderful, cute, and free tour, it did somewhat feel like you just watched How It's Made at the factory because the video is predominantly what you are going to see. read more

Did you know Chelsea Milling Co. - home of Jiffy mixes - is located in Chelsea, MI? That's practically in my backyard! Having recently discovered this, and that they offer tours of their factory, I jumped at the chance to visit the place on a free day. They have daily tours during weekdays, though call ahead to see what time they start. That particular day, my friend and I were touring with a 1st grade class, it was so cute and awesome. Here's why: - Everyone is so nice! and super excited to be working there, at least they look and sound like it. That's nice to see. - You get a slideshow in the beginning talking about the history of the plant, and while you watch, you get free COOKIES AND JUICE! Maybe it was because there were 7 year olds in the crowd that they did this, but I'd like to think they do this for all their tours. That's awesome. - You can buy tasty merch, including any of their 22 baking mixes. - Seeing how mixes and boxes are put together in a factory is pretty cool. - You get two free boxes of mix at the end! They are also incredibly enthusiastic about giving everyone this blue Jiffy weeple chef thing. it's cute, but they are like really really excited about them. - Watching 7 year olds get really excited about every single thing makes a tour like this so much more fun. I used to take school tours of this plant when I was a kid and I remember that is was always very fun. Jiffy is big employer in the Chelsea area. This is to let you guys know after all the years of my Mom, X-wife and now me for 10 years on my own I have gotten a bad box of jiffy mix. So someone sliped and maybe you just might want to know about it . The date to use is 06-20-13 and a set of no. L 2111A on box lid. The problem was a dead bug in the item so as you can guess I did not use it and have gotten rid as some as I send this. Hey some times stuff happen the next box I open was good so I will have my jiffy mix and you have info so do what you need to do to fix it a second box and I will not be happy at all. Coming from out of town/state, we booked a reservation the morning of our tour and were very pleased to get a reservation in those circumstances. The factory smelled of grain throughout and was very mouthwatering. We could even smell the factory from several blocks away!! Interesting to see exactly how the mix is made and eventually end up in my kitchen. read more
