I was so excited to try this place out, I had recently tried to incorporate more vegan meals into my diet and found this place through a quick "hampton roads vegan" search. I read all the Yelp and Facebook reviews and visited their website to check out their menu and see what they are all about. This place has such good reviews so I'm wondering if I just came at a bad day. I've never heard of the Kush grain and was so intrigued by what it was and what it would taste like! The pictures of the meals online looked amazing and satisfying. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for me. It took my husband and I around 35/40 minutes to drive to this place, and we got there maybe around 4:30-ish pm on a Friday. A bit out of the way from where we live, but the reviews made it seem so worth it. If you drive too fast you might miss it, it's inside of "House of Consciousness". When we stepped in, we noticed we were the only one there besides the one gentleman working there. He barely greeted us, or cracked a smile on his face. I wanted to know more about the Kush, and the whole place itself, but he seemed extremely uninterested about us being there, so I decided to just order. I asked him how he was, and I was clearly enthusiastic about trying the food, but he did not reciprocate that. He asked if I needed a menu (mind you-all while he was looking down on his phone) and handed one to me. I ordered the Kush Burrito Supreme and one water bottle from the fridge that was in front of the register. I asked him if I needed to bring the water bottle to him to scan it or if he was able to just ring it up on his register automatically. He stared at me for a second as if I had asked a stupid question, and with the most dead pan face answered "I can ring it up here". I could barely hear him, as he was speaking so soft and incredibly uninterested. He had one headphone in most of the time while we were talking to him as well. Nonetheless, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I understand people have bad days, I've worked in food/retail places for years..but this was just too much. Please train your workers on customer service. I just kept a smile on my face because I was just excited to try the food. I was going to eat at a table there but the atmosphere just felt so unwelcoming so my husband and I left and I ate my food in the car. I was starving, and I didn't want to drive 35-50 min (traffic/rush hour) home and have it be cold. We said goodbye and have a nice day, and I'm not really sure if he said anything back since he spoke so soft, was more interested in his phone, or just didn't feel like saying anything back. A simple "hello, how are you doing?" and "have a nice day" are enough to make a transaction a pleasurable one. THE FOOD- For a "Burrito Supreme" you would think it would be filled up. NO. It was quite small, and the first bite was a huge mouthful of tortilla-no fillings. I've had burritos at Taco Bell that were bigger and cheaper. The burrito itself wasn't filled nearly as much as it should have been. Don't get me wrong, the filling itself was delicious, I just wish I had more of it. Overall, this place was a let down. I would like to go back and try something else on the menu like the nachos, or Kush pocket, since the pictures look amazing, but I won't be going out of my way again. If I am ever in the neighbourhood I would gladly give this place a second chance. read more

I didn't know much about this place, I was sent 2 vegan restaurant locations by a friend and she said both were good, and I just started driving. I ended up driving from VA Beach, hungry and ready to eat. When I got to the establishment I thought I was lost because it didn't seem like a restaurant from the outside. Anyway I made my way in, and there was a lady at the counter eating, and I must add the customer service aspect is lacking. I was so excited to try the food and I felt like I was bothering her, she wasn't too enthused with me not knowing what to get or asking her so many questions about it. Being the positive person I am I threw her a compliment in hopes I spark something, because I just made the inner excuse that perhaps she has had a long day or she has had to deal with too many people like myself that don't know what to order. I ended up getting the Kush pocket for myself&friend as well as teas&other things totaling $83(I wasn't expecting that price but I also through tip in there). I also enjoyed the shake, I don't remember the name but it was awesome! I left super full with a lot more food left to spare, and the food was so delish I wanna make that long drive over again. Kush is as 'meaty' as quinoa. Mushrooms can be meaty but they skimp on them along with the onions & peppers. I also didnt get much sauce, just a ton of kush on iceberg lettuce as a salad. & just kush on iceberg lettuce & in a pocket. The potato patty was really chewy like it had been heated too many times. I dont think anything's made in house except for the kush. It's really uninspired & im not sure where the pricing comes from, its just grains on cheap lettuce. You can tell when an establishment takes pride in their work & this isn't that. I will say nothing tasted bad. I hope they revamp & I look forward to trying them if they do. read more

My boyfriend and I ate here last night. There are not a lot of seating options. We are not vegan or vegetarian... just wanted to try something different. The pockets are very delicious. I got the pizza. Definitely recommend the pizza and jerk pocket. It takes them a while to cook the food, but that just means food is fresh. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Great place for a vegan lunch! Went with my family and at first we couldn't find it. But I ended up opening the black door of house of consciousness which said it was open. Turns out it's inside there! A lot of cultural products which I love to browse through while waiting for food. The lady was very helpful and friendly and very personable! I'm guessing they are just starting out? But I hope they can grow and become a restaurant! That would be awesome and we definitely would be a loyal customer. I loved this place ! The inside was really cool and there was local art hanging all over the walls that you could buy , a library section where you could read the books and a little store where you can buy crystals , jewelry, etc. the cafe is inside the house of consciousness . the food was really GOOD. I got the nacho supreme and when I tell you I ate the entire thing ... it was gone. It was my first time trying "kush" and I have to say it definitely didn't make me miss any meat. I also had the butter pecan milkshake and it was super good , very filling I couldn't finish it especially after the nachos . It's been years since I've visited here. I was maybe 17. Maybe 18. I was just starting to get into a different lifestyle but I really couldn't even remember the house of consciousness having a kitchen. If they did, I damn sure didn't appreciate them for it. This visit was very great. Although we came a little late ( which means we weren't able to dine in without causing an inconvenience in timing) , we were able to browse around and it was a beautiful place. Oops I'm getting distracted , back to Jikoni! The food selections were amazing ! Just the fact that there were so many beautiful vegan options that I ever even heard of was exciting. I was told that the pockets were popular, so I tried the Rasta kush pocket I believe it was and I also ordered a KUKU sandwich. They were both large selections and I ended up having left overs. My favorite part of my meal was the shake I had. Omg. It was to die for. It was the one with salted caramel and other great flavors that melted in your mouth.
