Yendidi has been on my Yelp radar for years, but never found time to try them out. Their flagship location is in Norfolk where they even have a grocery market. A few years ago, they opened this location which has a bar and dine-in service. Sophia and I joined a friend of ours for lunch on Saturday. Let's see how the event turned out. I happened to place a reservation for our table the previous night, but since there weren't many people present, it wasn't necessary. The staff greeted us when we walked inside and got seated immediately. The decor inside was really nice. There's artwork abound, a bar and even a foosball table. Simply put, you should not be bored at a place like this. After looking at the menu, we were all ready to order. I selected their cabbage stew with chicken as the protein with plain jasmine rice and sweet plantains. Overall, the food was good. The stew was presented with medium spice so it definitely had my lips burning (a great thing) and the rice was well cooked. The plantains had flavor, but I felt it was overcooked. It has been a minute since I've eaten plantains but they were always a bit soft. The stew did have plenty of chicken but it could've been cut to slightly smaller pieces. Still, the meal had yours truly full and I did takeout. So did Sophia and our friend. All in all, I had a really nice time. The hospitality was really nice (the owner actually came to our table to check on us) and the food was plentiful. Oh yeah, we even had a robot bring our food to us. How cool is that??!! My wife and I had friends coming into town over the weekend and I suggested meeting up at Yendidi, as my friend loves African cuisine. I have been to Yendidi two times prior and have had great experiences both times. However, this particular time left a LOT to be desired. I've previously visited Yendidi during the week and around late afternoon/early evening. They have good happy hour deals and they allow you to order off their lunch menu well into the evening which I appreciate. Since my friends got into town late we ended up visiting Yendidi around 7:30pm on Sunday evening. When we sat down and were getting ready to order our waitress informed us of a laundry list of food options they had run out of (chicken, shrimp, plantains, jollof rice, white rice, beef patties, bread rolls, and samosas). This really limited the availability of options that we could choose from on their extensive menu. I would highly recommend having a white board or some way of communicating what options are not available before customers sit down so that they can make an informed decision about whether to dine at this location or go somewhere else with more options. My friends ordered the goat suya and chicken suya (they apparently still had a small amount of chicken left) and they both enjoyed their appetizers. The meat was very tender and well seasoned. I was relieved that things were taking a turn for the better but unfortunately I was disappointed again. My friend ordered the pepper soup and the wrong entree came out...twice! The waitress didn't give a sincere apology and it took my friend about an hour to get the correct entree. His correct order came out around 8:45pm (Yendidi closes at 9pm) and I could tell he didn't have enough time to enjoy his food. He ate about half of it and didn't even box up the rest (likely because they were staying at a hotel). My wife and I ordered the Waakye Special with a side of sweet potato fries. Fortunately our orders were correct and our food was tasty. Though I much preferred a side of jollof rice or plantains like I normally get, I was satisfied with my meal specifically. Given the lack of food options available and the lack of accuracy with my friend's order I believe their whole meal should've been complimentary or at least significantly discounted (i.e 50% off). I was so disappointed and embarrassed that their dining experience was so subpar. I expect much more out of Yendidi since I've had such better experiences in the past and I've met the owners. I hope they reach out and make this experience right. This restaurant provides tasty authentic West African food but I highly recommend coming during the weekday and or before 7:30pm to ensure that you have the best dining experience. Third time coming here and I really wanted to give them 5 stars but their sautéed green beans were cold and a little overcooked just like their cabbage when we went there the last time. absolutely delicious cuisine! beautiful taste of Ghanaian food. i ordered the goat stew with brown sauce and original fufu, my friend ordered oxtail stew with brown sauce and plantain fufu. while eating with our hands wasn't new to us, not having to chew the fufu was very different. naturally we want to chew, but when you dip the fufu into the sauce it sorta just goes down easy. very flavorful with a nice like spicy kick. the original fufu is comparable to a thicker mashed potato, but the stew was the star. the food was delivered super hot and it did take some time for it to make it to our table, but it was quickly demolish because of hot food it tasted. also on the side was a bowl full of plantain. hands down best i had. restaurant overall was great. noise level was moderate, we arrived around 6pm and it was beginning to pickup. read more

Took my nephews to Yendidi after a nearby afternoon activity. First impression, decor is beautiful and vibrant and the restaurant is modern and clean. We were seated in a comfortable booth and interacted with pleasant staff throughout the meal. Our waitress made sure that everything was going well. I was with three hungry nephews, so we ordered a good amount of food. We enjoyed the first round so much, that we ordered another round. It was very nice to leisurely sit around and taste so many delicious flavors! Highlights were plentiful. Goat, beef, and lamb suya were all hits in their own way. The wings were meaty and delicious and the samosas were a hit. We preferred the sweet potato fufu over the plantain fufu but we also enjoyed the plantain one. Kelewele was delicious. The beef stew was one of my favorites, perfect for dipping fufu in. Jollof rice was a hit with my nephew that had tried it previously at a friend's house. For a grand finale, we had the peanut soup with red snapper. So much flavor! We went with "medium" spice for everything and found it perfect for our palates. The food in this photo may look good, but it was awful, and the service was terrible as well. The waitstaff were young and inexperienced. The fish was over-fried, the meat tasted dry, and the rice was hard, like it had been sitting in a warmer. The cabbage was dry, and the soup was watery. We will not be returning, sorry! Ghanaian cuisine that will definitely wake up your tastebuds and give your palate such a sensational treat. I was only 3 bites in and I instantly proclaimed this as one of my new "goto" spots!!! The spices gave enough heat to appreciate its kick, and a ton of flavor that require you to chew slowly to savor each bite!!!! I am so flipping happy I decided to visit Yendidi. I know for certain I'll be back to check out the Oxtails and I already anticipate being pleased. The size of the lunch portion was about three meals, which is fantastic because I can definitely eat this three days in a row!!! I've had Yendidi on my mind for months and finally found some time on a Wednesday evening to dine in. As I walked in, there were a couple of people ahead of me picking up "to-go" orders so I figured I'd wait patiently to be seated. Once I got the attention of the server, I told him I was dining in and he told me to sit anywhere I wanted. Unfortunately, I waited for about 10 minutes to receive a menu after I sat down. After he finally dropped it off at the table, I waited another 10-15 mins to be assisted. Since there were about 4 other families dining in with one server assisting them all, I tried to be understanding but it just seemed like there was no urgency to take my order. The server finally stopped by and seemed to be in a bit of a rush. I asked what drinks were good, hoping I'd get options, but he told me he'd put in an order for the Mankessim cocktail. Umm ok, thanks lol. I then ordered the Chicken Suya, Jollof Rice, Fried Plantains and Samosas. I wanted to try the Afro Beef Pie but they were out. After another 10 mins, the food was served by another server, she was very nice and made sure I had everything I needed. Everything looked great but after I tasted the food, nothing was spicy. I was asked my spice level for the Chicken Suya and told him 'Medium' but none of it was spicy at all. The Chicken Suya was flavorful but seemed to be a bit over cooked and the Fried Plantains were very hard and dry. The Jollof Rice was delicious though along with the Samosas. The cocktail was okay but a bit sweet for my liking. Overall, I hate that I didn't have the best dining experience at Yendidi. I've been wanting to try African food for a while after watching all the mukbangs on YouTube and TikTok with people slapping their fufu! I finally got to try it! The location was perfect. Easy parking with really pretty decor in the restaurant. My friend and I split the Samosas for appetizers and it was SO good! It's got a slight kick but the sauce it comes with gives it a nice sweet flavor. I ended up ordering the Chicken Egusi Soup with Pounded Yam (fufu) and Sauteed Cabbage. My friend got the Okra Soup with Mackerel and Plantain Fufu and Sauteed Broccoli. They ended up running out of Pantain Fufu so they gave her Pounded Yam instead. We were pleasantly surprised with our dishes! The flavors are so rich and with the subtle starchy fufu, it paired so well together. The portions are huge! We both ended up taking to-go's and fed our spouses our leftovers lol. I will say, it is way more fun eating with the fufu than eating the soup without it. My favorite was definitely the samosas. I was visiting the VA Beach area and wanted to support a locally-owned African restaurant. Thanks to Yelp, I came across Yendidi's and chose to dine here before returning home. First, let me begin by saying this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous! The wall art, the decor, the vibrant colors, all of it is simply beautiful. As an African American woman who has West African children, seeing their beautiful culture displayed in such an elegant way absolutely made me proud and happy! Not only is this establishment beautiful, but their customer service was outstanding!!! Curtis (I believe was his name) assisted us and kindly answered any questions we had with pleasure. We ordered the grilled chicken platter, beef samosas, spicy wings, and a freshly made juice, which contained hibiscus, ginger, and pineapple. Everything was delightful!! The grilled chicken was very tender and flavorful. The samosas had a nice kick to them (spicy but tolerable), and the fresh juice was very refreshing. As a pretty picky person who also happens to have an adventurous person, I decided to give in and try something new. I picked the Egusi soup with red snapper. My sides were fufu and broccoli, and let me tell you, I am shocked. SHOCKED at how phenomenal it was! I was pretty adamant on returning to Yendidi because it was really hit or miss with the ox tails I received the last two times I had visited NFK location, but I had to have these flavors again. The spices, the seasonings, this is an experience. As for service, man. Those beautiful ladies answered all of my silly questions and were so kind! I had been waiting to try Yendidi. So i finally made it in today for a togo order. They have 2 locations so make sure you pay attention when looking at the menus. Its the same food but slightly different prices. The restaurant is located off Baxter and Princess Anne Rd. When i walked in an adorable little boy greeted me and got my order. He really knew what he was doing and he was very friendly. He even showed me the correct website. I am assuming hes the owners son. When i ordered there was a small issue because i ordered the 2 count rolls and 2 count samosas, but the lady who took my ordered rang it up as 2 orders of each. I was confused as to why my order was almost $50. So we figured out the issue and she corrected it. My total was $37. I ordered the black eyed pea stew with chicken and coconut rice, but i was given the black bean stew instead. I was ok with the mistake because it was very good!! I didn't notice until i got home. The chicken was tender and flavorful. I recommend this dish. I also got rolls which were fluffy and came with butter. The samosas were tasty as well with a little spice and they came with a tasty sauce. Also i got the fried plantains which went well with the dish. I enjoyed my meal. The dish was $24 by itself which i did think was pricey , but because it tasted good i would get it again. The sides were pretty reasonably priced. $4 - $6 for most items. My husband joked about jollof rice, and after our original Friday plans were canceled, I suggested Yendidi. Since moving to this area, I have tried them once during my first Yelp event. I called them and inquired about the wait time - I was told it would be about 20 minutes. I went ahead and made a reservation for 1 hour out - 7:30 pm. Here is the timetable for our experience: 7:44 pm: We were seated 8:01 pm: The waitress asked what we wanted and requested a drink menu. I wasn't provided with the menu, but something else. Then we watched a couple leave and another couple left without completing their meal. 8:14 pm: We placed our order 8:23 pm: We received my hubby's drink - a Coke 8:28 pm: I received my drink 8:34 pm: I was told they didn't have chicken wings, offered shrimp 8:43 pm: We received shrimp 8:50 pm: We received our food The buttered fried shrimp was good. My husband ordered the oxtail stew/gravy, which wasn't the signature dark brown coloring - it was more light brown. He said it was okay. His side dishes were jollof rice and mushrooms. The mushrooms tasted like they belonged on top of pizza. I ordered the salmon steak with waakye and steamed collard greens. The salmon steak was good, but the waakye was too crunchy. When we inquired about the quality and timeliness of the service, the waitress said they were expecting many people to come in on Friday night. She was the only one acting and serving multiple tables. They had a robot delivering the food, which was much appreciated because we had to wait for the waitress to bring our food-- we would have been waiting even longer. They opened this location in August 2023, and I know it is hard to find good workers. Still, the manager appeared to have been there the whole time (we saw her when we arrived and then saw her again until the end); she could have stepped in and helped. This was absolutely the worst dining experience I have ever had. I was really looking forward to trying West African food, but unfortunately, that never happened. I arrived around 6:40/6:45 pm on a Friday, there were two other tables seated when I got there. I decided to sit at the bar, which was empty. About 5 mins after I arrived, a few more people came in and got seated. My first frustration with the service was that everyone who came in after me had their orders taken way before taking mine. I was seated at the bar for at least 30 minutes before even asking me what I wanted. I originally tried to order a Malibu with soda/seltzer water but was told they don't have seltzer water, so I ended up ordering a Malibu with Sprite. For food, I ordered the okra soup with red snapper, plantain fufu, and cabbage. After I sat in this restaurant for 1.5hr and watched all these people that came in after me getting served food, I finally asked about my food. After asking about my food multiple times, they finally brought food to me. However, it was not what I ordered. They served me okra soup with goat and pounded yam instead of plantain fufu. I kindly told her that wasn't what I ordered, I ordered okra soup with red snapper. By this point, I was so frustrated with the service I asked to just pay for my drink. The customers sitting behind got up and left after their food that they also didn't order was brought to them by a robot. The people sitting next to me also left after waiting for 15 mins with no acknowledgment. The customer service was basically non-existent, I'm not even sure why they add 18% gratuity for parties of 5 or more when your food is served by a robot. I'm not even sure who you are tipping the robot or the non attentive staff. Based on tonight's experience, if i could give 0 stars, I would. I doubt I will attempt to try them again, and if I do, it will be the Norfolk location, which I hope is a better experience. read more

Came for dinner during the week.. The waiter recommended the samosas for appetizers and they were soo good!! The meat was spicy, the crust was like and flaky and the sauce that comes with it was sweet & went with it perfectly! I was wanting goat soup but ended up trying goat stew. while I'm not a fan of tomato sauces I tried the tomato option, since it was the classic option. It was pretty good, I probably would have liked the gravy option better. The goat could also have been a little more tender. My boyfriend got the oxtail stew and his was very tender. First off the staff is so nice and friendly. The atmosphere is nice and well lit with the music at a perfect volume to be able to enjoy it but also here conversation. And most of all the food. This is my first time having African food and it's been on my list for a while. I'm very relieved I had Yendidi for my first time. We hit up the VA Beach location after work to grab a quick late lunch, early dinner. The dining room was pretty empty, which wasn't a surprise for the time of day. The server seated us immediately taking our drink orders. We went with sobolo (reminded me of sorrel) and a pineapple-ginger drink. The food was excellent. My server was great I came mid day after my nail appointment and got the oxtails stew for my entree. The entree comes with two sides. I decided on the jollof rice and the plantains. The jollof went great with the stew it was a match made in heaven. I wasn't a big fan of the plantains it was fine just not for me. I also got two appetizers to expand my back just a little bit wider. The fried shrimp and samosas. The samosas were kind of dry. The last time I had the they were amazing so I'm guess they weren't on their best but the fried shrimp was the best thing I had out of my whole meal. Yendidi I'm so glad you got a location in Virginia Beach. I really enjoyed all of the food. The beef patty appetizer was so yummy, especially with the sauce. The beef stew with the eba makes me so happy. Makes you feel so warm inside. You get punched in the face with lots of flavor and seasoning like no other. Best to eat with your hands! The jollof was also wonderful. I believe we ordered medium spicy, but honestly it was not really spicy. Next time I'd want it to be spicier. The inside is decorated very nice and is very spacious. I ordered my meal goat stew w Jollof, plantains and banana bread and it left a lot to be desired. The Jollof was cold not like sitting out for a while cold but something that came out of the fridge and warmed sitting on the counter cold. The goat was different and a little tough and I never got any banana bread. I tried calling the place as it's a bit away from where I live but wasn't able to get through because the phone call went unanswered and I wasn't able to leave a voicemail. After looking then up and found out it's an African focused menu, I decided to give it a try. Customer Service: Outstanding! Very pleasant, accommdating, and were full of joy whether they were your server or not. Food came out hot and fast. Ambiance: Very beautiful inside full of beautiful pictures a decor. I almost felt out was out of town. The negative was that we had battle a couple of flys in the dining area who where relentless. Food: We all order the Oxtail Stew. If I'm being honest, it was the worst oxtails I ever had. They were too tough and it was the consensus at the table. However, everything else was excellent including all the sides and chicken appetizer I had. Bottom line: I'm chalking this up to a bad day as far as the flies and ordering the wrong disk. My favorite thing to get here is the okra soup with chicken. The portion sizes are huge. They have options where you can request certain spice levels for your dishes. Our first try of west African food and it was amazing . We started off with an Afro Beef Pie as our appetizer and it was flaky yet so moist! Our main entrees were egusi soup and Goat stew both with fufu, some collard greens and plantains. I don't even know how to describe the flavors of the main entrees but they were so delicious...the goat fell right off the bone. So you know whoever is cooking back there is doing it right!! My daughter has been begging me to find a place that has fufu, well after my surpise Yendidi was about 10mins away. We decided to give it a go and when we arrived there was plenty of parking spaces and the inside of the restaurant was inviting. We were seated quickly, service took a while due to an event for one of the VA Beach Gov candidates. The food was excellent, so much flavor. My daughter was so happy to finally have fufu. I didn't even take any pics because we immediately started devouring the food. The owner came to our table and was geniunly interest in speaking to us, that speaks volumes of the love she has for what she does. She apologized for the service but we understood since the event had a lot people. When I got to my car I didn't realize I forgot by wristlet purse, she ran towards the car and had brought my wristlet. I couldn't thank her enough! We will for sure be back and try the other dishes and their adult beverages :) read more

first time going to Yendidi and i LOVED it! the food was spectacular, the restaurant was super clean, and the waitresses were super pleasant! i've been searching high and low for a place that has fufu and chicken stew, so i'm SO glad i took my family here for lunch! will definitely be coming back here the next time i'm in town! read more
