If barbecue were an Olympic sport, Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q would be bringing home the gold medal. The brisket was so tender it practically surrendered before I picked up my fork, and the appetizers should probably have their own fan club. The real MVP, however, was Justin, our server. He kept the adult drinks flowing, anticipated our every need, and delivered such great service that I'm convinced he has barbecue-related superpowers. Between the fantastic food, friendly atmosphere, and Justin's outstanding hospitality, this was less of a meal and more of a religious barbecue experience. This place is it!! It was recommended by our hotel receptionist. We tried it for lunch and got a couple appetizers and mains. The cheese biscuits were complimentary and very addicting. I was about to order a dozen more but we had so much more food coming! We got the deviled eggs next, those were also delicious. The brisket Mac and cheese bites were gooey and straight out of the fryer. For our mains, I got the brisket plate which comes with a couple of sides. Everything was absolutely delicious. Today I decided to try out Jim 'N Nick's for the first time. The workers were very nice and the atmosphere was calm since the place was basically empty. I was taken care of pretty quickly and throughout my waiting time at the restaurant it gave me a chance to appreciate the interior of the restaurant and my water. The restaurant seemed to be pretty clean as well, however, I did not get a chance to see if the utensils used were eco-friendly since I did not use any. I ordered a smoked barbecue chicken sandwich with the honey habanero sauce and my sandwich was brought to me on a reusable plate. The barbecue chicken was very good and hot to eat, especially with the sauce I got added on top. I really enjoyed my time at the restaurant because of the chill atmosphere and the array of southern food it has to offer. Boy oh boy!! First time in Alabama. First time enjoying Bama BBQ, and JnN's was the perfect place to welcome me to the South!! The space is large and lofty giving patrons plenty of space to loosen their belts. Massive portions of succulent, sauces are flowing and the flavors are ON POINT!!! We came in for lunch (pro-tip, just order the to-go container right off the bat) and were seated immediately. The Southern charm and kindness of our waitress was even warmer than that hot plate of brisket and free sweetcorn muffins that hit the table (as if we needed ANY MORE food other than what we got). My colleague and I both got the two meat platter, cause, we needed to try it all. Terrible experience. Everyone here is having to wear coats because it is so cold in here, including the other tables. Kids are telling their parents they are cold. Their grandmother is just as cold. Half of the menu was unavailable. The server came back to my mother 3 times telling her that one of the vegetables was unavailable. My drink was refilled with a different drink. We had no silverware when the meals came. And once served, they brought us plastic ware. Two meals came with the wrong sides. And finally, my sausage was so overcooked that it took half a minute to cut one slice with the plastic ware. Working in Birmingham, AL for an extended period of time and Jim 'N' Nick's was right up the street from both my hotel and my work site so we stopped in for lunch one time. Listen, I enjoyed myself SO MUCH that I returned 2 more times for dinner! Here's why! Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is huge and has a fairly large footprint for being in a downtown setting. No private parking, but there's plenty of street parking. Once inside you're greeted by a wide-open dining room and a big center bar with seating on 3 sides. There are dining booths on both sides and plenty of standard tables. If you walk on the left side of the bar and head toward the back you'll see the to-go section where you can walk right up to the counter and order your food to roll out with. Service: I can't remember the name of our servers, but we sat at the bar each time and everyone was wonderful. As a collective they were funny, sweet, likeable and personable. Food: Like I mentioned, the first time we came, it was for lunch. Then they dropped those complimentary cheesy muffins in front of us, I was befuddled, beside myself and just bewildered. They were AMAZING. I could've eaten JUST THOSE for lunch and been so happy. However, for lunch I wanted something light and went with their Chopped Southern Salad which consists of smoked chicken, smoked onions, sweet corn, cheddar cheese, bacon, cucumber, tomatoes, almonds and homemade croutons then tossed in house-made vinaigrette. It was delightfully fresh, yet filling and savory. I loved it. However, I saw they had smoked wings so on my next visit I came in for those... I was able to try 2 flavors, their Buffalo and Morgan Co. White Sauce (also knows as Alabama BBQ sauce). They were DELIGHTFUL. This may have been the first time I was able to try an Alabama BBQ sauce and I really liked it's savory-ness. It's a mayonnaise-based sauce which gives it its white color and rounded flavor. The Buffalo was thick and hearty, better than a watery traditional Buffalo sauce. On my 3rd visit I tried out their Combo Plate. On it was their smoked turkey, fried catfish and beef brisket. On the side was a salad and a lil' cup of mac & cheese. The food was so delicious it really made me think this place was like a one-off. Much to my surprise there are Jim 'N' Nick's BBQ places ALL OVER THE SOUTH! Nice job guys. Value: It's a BBQ place and usually they aren't cheap. I feel like $30.00 is enough to come here and pig out with! In conclusion, I loved it here... That's why I hit this place up 3 times. Lol. Brisket sandwich is piled high with meat falling off the sides and just a little sauce (more available on the side), but it's a bit in the flavorless side. Not like boiled meat, but not very smoky. Could use more pickles, too. Coleslaw and potato salad are good. Potatoes are not too chunky, the slaw is not overdressed. Definitely good examples of both. (Add some of the barbecue sauce to the potato salad - it makes it just a little better). Unlike most other places, the coleslaw is served in a respectable portion size. It is quite popular to serve it in little condiment cups - not so here. Actually - everything is served in good sized portions. Three stars - decent food that'll satisfy a craving. It comes with 1 choice of protein: pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked turkey, or beef brisket $$. The Beef brisket is more expensive. It also comes with up to 6 free toppings: bacon, bbq sauce, butter, cheese, sour cream, and scallions. I did a pick up order and my food was ready in about 25-30 minutes after ordering which isn't too bad. The restaurant is very southern vibes and the staff was friendly! Trying to find a place open in Birmingham on a Sinday is a chore. Walking down the street we noticed this place and decided to venture in. We walked in and we were greeted by a kind youg lady that sat us in a booth. The booths and tables are a bit old, but they were clean. The decor was rustic and fit the vibe of a BBQ place. We ordered some wings and onion rings to start while the server brought us our drinks. We ordered a lemon drop martini, long Island, and a margarita. When the drinks came, the martini came with ice it - this told me the bartender didn't know how to truly make a martini. The other drinks were overwhelmed with ice as well. Beer will be my next selection. Ordered a stella, but guess what, they were out. We ordered 2 of the loaded baked potatoes and two meat plate combos. When receiving the food, it looked great from the outside, however, when biting into it, it was overpowered with salt. I'm not talking a little bit, I'm speaking so much salt that I was unable to eat it. I decided to scrape the brisket off and got down to the potato and the cheese was not melting which told me thar it was a very cheap grade of cheese. Also, the food was slightly over cold. At this point, I was truly grossed out and decided to skip anything else. Everyone in the party agreed that the salt was just too much.
