In town for a conference and the restaurant was a block from my hotel. Inside is very casual. Kinda bar-like with a nice restaurant vibe! We sat at the bar since it was packed. Service at the bar was good considering every seat at the bar was taken. We ordered our food and it was out within 15-20 minutes. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken, but subbed the sides for the whole fried okra and Gouda grits. When I say those grits and okra hit.....somebody in that kitchen knows what they're doing! The chicken breasts were juicy and flavorful. The spice level was typical for Nashville hot chicken, which I sometimes I can't take. But I loved the flavor so much I couldn't stop eating it. I found The Southern Kitchen & Bar completely through Yelp and the Yelp reviews, and I am glad I did. When I came in, the place was crowded, which is usually a very good sign. It had a good energy right away. I had been looking at a few things on the menu and was really going back and forth. I was interested in the hot chicken, the Brussels sprouts, and also the ribeye Philly cheesesteak. They told me both were really good, and I ended up going with the ribeye Philly cheesesteak. Great choice. I also got a side salad with the chipotle ranch dressing and that was very good too. Picture below. For dessert, I was planning on getting the key lime pie, because that is usually my move, but Hayden my server talked me into trying the blueberry cobbler cheesecake instead. I am glad he did. I recently visited Southern Kitchen & Bar on Valentine's Day, and I have to say, the wait time was surprisingly short compared to other restaurants we checked. We waited about 20-30 minutes before being seated, which was impressive considering the holiday. Once seated, our waitress greeted us right away and was very attentive from the start. I ordered my daughter's food first. When the waitress returned with our waters, I placed our appetizer and entrées. Within 5-7 minutes, our appetizer arrived, and just 2-5 minutes later, our entrées were brought out. The turnaround time was shockingly fast -- I was fully prepared to wait at least 20-30 minutes for our food. Now for the food itself. I ordered the grits and greens but modified it. I swapped the turnip greens (since they contain pork and I don't eat pork) for a house salad and substituted the grits for garlic mashed potatoes. I'd rate my meal a 3/10. The fried chicken was placed on top of the mashed potatoes with a drizzle of hot sauce which made it was very soggy. For fried chicken, it also lacked seasoning. The mashed potatoes didn't really taste like mashed potatoes -- they were giving more "grits" than actual garlic mashed potatoes. The house salad, however, was good.. You can't really mess up a salad.. My mom ordered the shrimp and grits. She said the shrimp was nicely seasoned, but again, the grits just weren't up to par. She rated her meal a 3/10. My daughter had chicken strips with mac & cheese and fruit. The chicken strips were dry and a bit overcooked. The mac & cheese was just okay -- maybe a 4/10 -- but she absolutely loved the fruit. I also ordered a drink called the "Birmingham Belle," and it was really good. I'd give the drinks a 10/10 -- they definitely didn't miss there. Overall, the service and staff were amazing. Everyone was super friendly, respectful, and quick. If we needed anything -- extra ranch, utensils, refills -- they were right there. The friendliness and speed of service honestly boosted my overall rating. Would I go back or recommend it? Probably not. The food just wasn't up to par, especially for somewhere I'd suggest to someone visiting from out of town. If I rated it based on food alone, it would probably be a 2/10. But because of the staff and service, I'd give the restaurant an overall 4/10. I will also add that this restaurant is definitely not cheap, so be prepared to spend a little if you decide to eat here. I honestly think the pricing played a big part in why I rated it so low. The food felt overpriced and underwhelming. My meal was $25 and I truly don't feel like it was worth that price. Overall, the restaurant felt overpriced, and unfortunately, the food just didn't measure up. To be fair, this wasn't my first choice for Valentine's Day. I originally wanted to go to Pappadeaux's Seafood Kitchen or The Cheesecake Factory, but neither was taking reservations, and both had 3+ hour waits when we arrived. Since we're not from Birmingham, we started calling around and checking TikTok. Southern Kitchen & Bar was the only place without a long wait, and it had been recommended by locals, so I was excited to finally try it. I'm glad I had the opportunity to experience it, but it's just not somewhere I'd recommend based on the food quality. The service was amazing -- the food just didn't match it. read more

First off the live music on Friday night was amazing!! A one man soloist who played multiple instruments was so good! The only name I got for him was Jerry. I started with a cocktail, strawberry fields which was just ok. It has strawberry vodka, fresh strawberry puree and lemonade. I'm expected more of the lemonade. We only had appetizers for a light meal. We had Cajun angels which was bacon wrapped shrimp, deviled eggs which were topped with candied bacon and fried green tomatoes which were topped with feta and tomato bacon jam. Southern has become my go to before or after the Stallions games! I can get in easily to grab a quick drink and/or bite to eat. The bartenders are always courteous and helpful. This is an updated review! I love their conecuh gumbo! I can't get enough of this. It's in a rich sauce. I wish it was a lil spicy but I use black pepper & hot sauce! Every time I visit Birmingham; it is on my must have meals list, surprisingly! The service is usually prompt and efficient! They pretty much know the routine with me! My gumbo; toast and a side of rice along with black pepper, hot sauce, water and a beer sometimes and let me be! It's at a bar which is cool but due to some injuries I can't sit in those high chairs so I prefer a regular seated chair! I just can't get enough of this place and the ladies may remember me; the quiet guy from Cali that's usually solo with unique manners and etiquette! So good and friendly. I was in town for work and met some friends there for dinner, OMG I'm so glad I did. We were taken care of by Trinity and she was great. Greeted us upon arrival, knew the answers to our food questions, had the perfect recommendations, and was the perfect amount of attentive. I had the chicken and dumplings for dinner, good lord they curled my toes. I don't know what the chefs did to it, it keep it up. What a fabulous spot in downtown Birmingham near the civic center and stadium for drinks and great food. The service here is very good as well. The pimento cheese is da bomb and we really enjoyed the fired okra appetizer as well. I also ordered the Maui Maui sandwich and it was seasoned perfectly! The fries could've been better (seemed like they were sitting out and they were cold) but the food was great. The ambiance and service of this restaurant is solid. What is off are the cocktails and the food . I think if we had sat at the bar the drinks might have been better. My ranch water was anything but. I think probably tequila w marg mix. And no salt rim. I think the cosmopolitan was made with ocean spray cranberry juice ..... yikes. Drinks from the bar were sooooooo Good I could have definitely stayed there for a bit but we took the kiddos. I would have never ordered the lemon Tyme chicken but our waiter highly recommended it and it was GREAT! Portions were big and super filling. The only thing we didn't like was the shrimp. For appetizers we had the okra, (which is a long cut of okra fried super great), fried pickles also super great, and not so great deviled eggs and bacon wrapped shrimp. First off the deviled eggs taste like they're made by someone who's never tried deviled eggs before, the bacon wrapped around the shrimp was SO.SALTY we couldn't even finish them literally a sodium bomb in the mouth. I recently went to The Southern this past weekend and it is located right by protective stadium and a couple other restaurants. They had a variety of options but I got the hot tenders with fries and mac and cheese and it was phenomenal. The restaurant itself is pretty big and there are several places you could sit inside and there is even a bar inside you can sit at. The also have a little stage for late nights and weekends for singers and performers to come which was really cool. It is located at the perfect area with so much to do and eat all over. I went during lunch and it was not very busy so our food came out pretty quickly as well. The waiters were so welcoming and kind it truly felt like the place to eat. It was pretty crowded, but we were seated instantly, and the food came out pretty fast. I got a Caesar salad, which was a little too light on the dressing, with a side of their famous jalapeño honey fries. The salad was average, but the fries were great. My friend got the shrimp and grits (with Conecuh sausage and crispy onions) and it was fantastic. She said it was the best shrimp and grits she had ever had. We went to Southern Kitchen before a concert at a nearby venue. We had bacon wrapped shrimp, a mahi mahi sandwich, a Philly cheesesteak, and wine. The food was good, the service was friendly and not slow, but the wine list was nothing to write home about. Decor is sort of southern industrial and open. Southern Kitchen certainly worked well for our evening downtown. We may not make a special trip to dine there, but we'd certainly go back were we otherwise in the neighborhood. read more
