I'm a woman of color experiencing some hair loss, so I decided to try extensions. I found Jim online and the reviews at the time were positive. Unfortunately, my experience didn't match what I expected. The extensions were very bulky and couldn't be covered by the hair that was left out, which left me feeling embarrassed -- especially because this was for my birthday. Jim is fantastic! He's very professional, kind, meticulous with his craft and just a joy to be around and talk to. When I first moved back to Birmingham 2.5 years ago, I initially could not find anyone who could do the Japanese Straightening treatment on my hair that I had had done in Chicago. Then I found Jim's salon. He has been specially trained to do this particular hair treatment and he may be one of the only ones in the area to offer it. This treatment is different than Keratin treatments, as well as the Brazilian blowout. The Japanese Straightening is a permanent straightening treatment, that lasts until the hair grows out. For someone like myself who has very thick, long hair, that is partially frizzy and curly, I have found this treatment to be a life changer, especially since I'm a working mom with 4 young children. Normally, I never wear my hair down because it just looks so "big", but with this treatment, I can wash it at night, let it dry overnight, and then blow dry it for less than 2 minutes and it's silky smooth. I don't even have to run the straightener thorough it, but if I want it to be extra sleek and straight, it takes only a couple of minutes. I wish I had discovered this treatment back in my 20s! Every now and then, I get angry. Every now and then I get a little self destructive. Unfortunately, most of those times I take my aggression out on my hair. Once upon a time, I cut my hair up to my chin. That was not a good day. I cried. The most recent form of destruction was my great idea to dye my hair reddish brown. That was not a good idea, either. So when a Groupon came up for this salon, I grabbed it. I have been trying to grow my hair out for a very long time. I have been refusing to get my hair cut, especially professionally. But after seeing pictures of my not so awesome widow's peak making me look like a 60 year old man after a decade's worth of a receding hair line, I decided I also needed a hair cut. The salon is in a very small location, off the beaten path of 31. It is easy to find, though. Jill was my stylist. She talks. She talks a lot. I am not a talker. But I found her easy to talk to, so I did not particularly mind that she was extra chatty. She also listened to me. I stopped getting my hair cut professionally because they never listen to me. I will say I want to keep the length, then they cut off 6 inches. It never fails. But this time, only two inches were lost. Yes, I had two inches of split ends. I can thank my hair dryer, curling iron, and flat iron for that. And the hair dye. Anyways, she cut my hair in a way that hides my widow's peak a bit. She also showed me how to style it myself. She fixed my bangs and she gave me highlights that got rid of the red color. I am pleased with the service she performed. I was not pressured to buy any product, either. I had previously had a great experience at this salon 4 or 5 years ago so I bought a groupon for a wash, cut, and style to used before a Xmas party. They have a nice salon facility that has good atmosphere, located in a small house, off Highway 31. I had an event to go to on a Saturday night so I got the latest appointment I could make, 12:30 pm, to have my hair cut and 'done'. I didn't realize they closed so early or the date wouldn't have been important. I showed up 10 minutes early to the appointment and was out the door, 12-15 mintues later. I had not washed my hair in three days when I came in, expecting it to be washed with my service but I was rushed to a chair. The stylist was curt and barely hid her annoyance at having to take a customer. I have worked in retail and customer service for a long time, and continue to wait tables part time in addition to my day job in a tech field. I understand that serving groupon and other discount customers can be like playing roulette, but it is unprofessional and unkind to treat these customers poorly based on the expectation that they will be bad customers. I tipped her based on the original cost of the service, because I usually tip 20-30% for service, and so as not to be perceived as a bad groupon customer. I reserve tipping 0-15% for really bad service, quality, and dispute resolution. I shouldn't have tipped the woman at all. First of all, I was rushed to the chair. She was short with me, struggling to hide her annoyance, and not very personable. Seeing as how eager she was to get started, looming over my head with my hair and the scissors in her hand, I asked if I would not receive a wash first. She said my hair was fine and I didn't need it. I was really wanting to do something a little different and discuss a style but she actually started to cut while I was talking and kept going, "like this?," after each snip. In the end, it's an ok, but not great cut, that is too short and has many more layers and fringing than what I requested or expected. It's going to take extra time and haircuts to keep it shapely while trying to grow the layers out without taking anymore length! Who wants to be bossed around by someone pulling on your hair and threatening you with scissors? My experience verges on traumatic. She finished by sprinkling some dry shampoo in my crown, brushed it out, and then said "done" without offering to let me really see the cut. My hair was dank and still had crinkles in it from being in a pony tail so what was there to see anyway I guess??? I think I paid 29 for the groupon, plus a 12$ tip. For $12 + $8 tip, I could have saved some money and gone to great clips. Plus, the stylists there are always friendly! The 280 location near Walmart and Kripsy Kreme has always been fast, solid, and friendly. read more

I went to J. Ostrosky for the first time because I bought a Groupon. I will NEVER return. I asked for 2 very simple things: *SUBTLE highlights *Cover the gray hair After 3.25 HOURS, not only was the front of my hair ORANGE, it is STRIPED with blonde & the rest of it was dyed a terrible mousy brown. Additionally, the gray was not covered. This is THE WORST dye job I have ever had. I will be going elsewhere in the hopes that they can make me look like a human being again. I bought a groupon with a cut and full foil highlight, and I "had" really long hair, only wanted about 3 inches cut off the bottom, the stylist seemed to be very thorough in asking what I wanted, ended up cutting about an extra 3-4 inches than I wanted, and now I have zebra stripes instead of subtle light brown highlights... She knew I was not happy. She was super sweet, but got a little cut happy when she realized her next appt was coming in soon. Unfortunately, I can't reccommend, and it will take about 6 months to grow out, and perhaps a box of do it yourself hair color to calm down the "stripes". I'll keep looking... read more

Super friendly front desk, but terrible service. I paid almost $900 for hair extensions and had the worst experience. Jim didn't know how to blend them and they just looked awful. The quality of the hair was just blah. It was frizzy after 1 just 1 wash. Then he had the audacity to charge me another $60 for a haircut, even though he didn't give me a haircut. I had to go get it fixed at another salon, where I was told that I got completely overcharged for the amount of hair I was given and the placement of the strands were completely unbalanced. read more

I bought the cut and color groupon for $60 (you get $135 worth of services) to try out this place - I was a bit skeptical after reading reviews from both ends of the spectrum, but I purchased the groupon anyway and prayed for the best.. I had an amazing experience with this salon - Becky was my stylist for the cut and the partial highlights, and she was terrific. This is probably the first time I walked out of any salon and did not immediately see something that needed to be trimmed. Becky was meticulous and detail-oriented, and made sure that I liked the style. I did not have very many specific requests, so she did an excellent job based on the few criteria I had.. layers and bangs. She made sure that my hair was not lopsided or cut at a slope (which tends to happen a lot for me). And she made sure that the cut would suit my personal styling routines. The partial highlights are awesome - exactly what I wanted - subtle yet noticeable - she made sure that they were the perfect shade to accentuate my head :) Becky was very professional and made sure that my hair was perfect. Shay (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) helped explain a new style for me to have that suited my face. I haven't had short hair in 3-4 years. I too bought a groupon to this "Aveda Concept" salon. I drove up to find a dumpy old house with a sign outside. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and went in. What a mistake! I was the ONLY person in there with the owner who was friendly but very odd. I told him exactly what I wanted and I walked out with my hair looking WORSE than when I walked in! AND he had the audacity to charge me $30 to "style" my hair meaning he used the straightner on my hair for about 5minute. He didn't even notify me of the charge up front! I do have to say I called and told him how unhappy I was and I went back a week later to have him "fix" it. I told him my roots were still there and it looked as if my hair was never highlighted. He regretably agreed but he did NOT come close to rectifying the situation. If you have a groupon go buy Aveda products here and DO NOT let him touch your hair! I have been getting my hair highlighted by Jim for over 15 years. No other stylists, including those from high dollar salons in other cities, have been able to to the job as well or nearly as fast as he does. I have fine blonde hair which is apparently a challenge to some colorists. He has also highlighted my teenage daughter's hair and did a beautiful job. She is a brunette. I went to this salon only because I had a groupon. The girl who cut my hair did a decent job. I asked for a long bob but it did end up being a little shorter than I had hoped for. Color not as blonde as I wanted but it still looks okay. My complaint is not in the haircut/color but the customer service. I have never been treated so terribly as a client. First she greets me by saying "where is your groupon?" Instead of hi my name is _____ nice to meet you. Then when she started on my foils she complained at how long it took and said "full foils are the devil" way to make your client feel like an obligation. Later when she's cutting my hair I was watching as I was very nervous and she said and I quote, "what are you looking at? You can't see what I'm doing back here. You look creepy." CREEPY!!! Why in the hell would you call a client, a new one at that, creepy? So unprofessional. I will never return although she did a decent job on my hair. It's not all about skill. I would much rather have good customer service than do what I ask with my hair. That can be fixed. Her attitude definitely needs work. read more

I was sent a $25 Groupon coupon good for $55 in color services at the Jim Ostrosky Salon. I had BEAUTIFUL color and a great cut when I went in as I had just had my hair colored and cut in 2 separate three hour sessions about 5 weeks prior and it looked PERFECT!! I went in to this new salon before I needed my hair done because I wanted them to be able to see what my hair looked like exactly the way I wanted it so they could not screw it up and since I was sent a coupon offer, I thought it would be a good time to let a salon do a tiny service to see how good they were. MISTAKE!! This salon advertises as COLOR CORRECTIVE SPECIALISTS, AND THEY ARE NOT! They turned my ash base ORANGE and cut 4 inches off my hair. I called the owner Jim, to ask him to correct my hair. BAD MISTAKE! When I went in, he told me how wonderful and "warm" my orange hair color looked and that he would not have noticed. He put foils in my hair telling me that would correct it but that he had to work fast as he didn't have time. I walked out with orange roots and platinum tips! It looked horrendous. The salon also offers a Money Back Guarantee which they don't honor! I asked Jim for my money back and he refused. He refunded the Groupon coupon of $25, which Groupon had already done but refused to give me the rest of my money back. In addition to the $25 Groupon coupon, I had to pay another $140! This would make the "true value" of the appointment $170!! THIS SALON IS A RIP OFF! I wouldn't trust it with a BALD HEAD! read more
