Im a stylist myself and needed someone in bham to shape my coily hair (which i silk press myself). For some reason it just felt right. After reading the reviews, i reached out & Pamela at the front desk was amazing at navigating me to Peter through an email consultation. He did exactly what we discussed and it's actually one of the best shapings/cuts I've had in a long time. As a stylist we can be super picky and annoying. Not here! I immediately felt comfortable and assured he knew exactly what i was asking. He even slowly walked through the process a little at a time to be even more sure. Not much else to say the experience was amazing, the salon is super cute and comfy, everyone was welcoming and approachable. Had a nice lil convo with Chance who styles next to Peter. I frequented Orbit Salon for many years, and couldn't remember exactly what prompted me to stop going . . . I've been going back there for a year + now I believe I remember why. To be fair, I've arguably gotten the best haircut/style of my life there. However, those results were not reproduced from cut to cut, despite wanting the exact same style. When it's good, it's great . . . But then I have those times where I think "why did I ever come back here?". Walked in for my last appointment, was told the stylist was running a bit behind. Fine, it happens. Offered a spot in the lobby and a beer, as per usual - no complaint there, always hospitable. 45 minutes later after sitting in the lobby having not been updated or even talked to further, I received a hasty apology from the receptionist on my way out the door as I left. Stylist never bothered to come and have a word, no phone call, nothing. Maybe customers are a dime a dozen so it's not worth the effort, but there's plenty of other joints that do a good haircut. read more

Wonderful service. Very cozy and unpretentious. They were able to slot me in immediately for a cut and fairly complicated hair coloring. The front staff quoted me a price immediately without having to ask for it. When we realized what I wanted required a different technique, therefore a different price, they were very open and upfront about the price change. I was very pleased with Jade. She was careful and made sure she understood what I wanted. Small talked a little, but wasn't overly talkative (a pet peeve of mine). They made sure I had all the coffee/water I needed. After I was done, the front desk guy escorted me to my car with an umbrella as to not mess up my hair since it was raining. The results speak for themselves. Love my hair. I went to Orbit today for the first time based off Yelp reviews....it was amazing! I was greeted by a very friendly staff and immediately offered a beverage( soft drinks, water, or wine) I got there a little early so I checked out the local merchandise they sell in the waiting room. Very unique and very cool they support so many local artists. My stylist Wade was fantastic. He listened to what I wanted, looked at pics I brought of what I was looking for, and managed to fix what the last girl from another local salon totally screwed up all while giving me a haircut I love. He took his time and made sure everything was exactly what I wanted. I finally found a place I trust to do my hair!!! They are a hot place right now so it took me a few days to get an appointment but it was totally worth the wait. read more

I followed Josh here five years ago, when he made it his hair cutting home. Hopefully, he will never leave. Everyone that works here is overly friendly and the environment is welcoming. I'm always asked if I want anything to drink as soon as I walk in. Even though Josh is the only person that regularly cuts my hair, everyone in the shop knows my name and I know theirs. After posting my first review, Joe immediately called me the next business day and wanted to help me with the issues we had. He got me in the very next day to have my hair touched up by Lisa. She did a wonderful job completly fixing my roots and blending them into my hair and she also fixed the tag! Clay, the owner of the shop, who is normally booked out a year, is currently staying past the time every other stylist has and is working on the brides hair. This place is wonderful about responsing to issues and quickly fixing them. Im thankful that they reaponded so quickly and qere able to fix our hair before the bridal festivities begin tomorrow. I really enjoyed my trip here. They were very friendly, but not annoyingly, super peppy friendly (always a plus). I was offered a beverage immediately, and their coffee was pretty good. My stylist was a few minutes late, but it wasn't too long and both she and the receptionist apologized to me for the wait. There was a slight snafu with the hot water that morning, but my stylist gave me a discount due to the chilly rinse. Overall, I was very satisfied both with my haircut and experience. I will be going back. Tips: parking can be a little hairy if you have an appointment around lunch since it's in 5 points. Absolute gem in the five points area of Birmingham. I had an appointment with Elle. Just a shampoo, blowout and style. I have frizzy- curly hair and with the humidity in the south it's a challenge to get it looking smooth and nice. She did a wonderful job of being friendly and chatty and did my hair beautifully. She took all of my suggestions into consideration and she even had the smart idea to put it in an easily removable bun so it didn't get frizzy during the day (I have a wedding at night). The atmosphere is comfortable and charming, and they nicely offered me a drink when I arrived. They have cool artwork in the waiting area too! The price was extremely reasonable, and I will absolutely be returning as often as I can! read more

This was my second visit to Orbit. The guy who did my hair was friendly and made me feel comfortable throughout the whole haircut. I had a very vague request of "just wanting to cut my hair shorter" and have more hair than an average asian. Despite this, he did an amazing job with my hair! I usually drive all the way to Atlanta to get a haircut, but this saved me the long drive. Now I have a hair salon in Birmingham that I can go to regularly! read more

Nicole was great, she listened to exactly what I wanted and did a great job with my short curly hair that is easy to mess up. Location is funky, wouldn't go when it's hot because they just have two AC window units but the feel of the place is fine. I was offered a drink when I came in and the staff were friendly. This was my first visit to Orbit Salon, and it probably won't be my last. When I came into the trendy salon I was offered drinks, which is nice (but I wasn't interested). After a sort-of terrible wait (30 minutes), my stylist, Peter, was ready. He was very friendly and talkative which is a chore I'm sure, as I'm somewhat introverted. He was very communicative about my styling, offering to do touch-ups and letting me inspect the job before my shampooing (which was fantastic). For me, my $28 haircut was a bit high. I'm a guy and I'm used to a $20 haircut. That being said, the location is fantastic, the haircut is very good, the service was very nice (despite the wait), and the decorating was pretty good, too. I'm going to try out another salon or two first, but in all likelihood Orbit will be my new go-to place in Five Points. read more

I called around the time they opened and was able to get a same day appointment. It was a little later in the afternoon than what I had wanted, but I was just happy to get in on short notice. They called me before my appointment time to let me know that my stylist was free earlier than expected and I was able to go in a little early, which was great. My appointment was with Ashley. She took time to look at my hair and ask a lot of questions about my daily routine and styling habits before getting started, and made sure that what I was describing and what she was doing were the same thing. This was my first and, unfortunately, last visit. Upon arrival to my appointment I was greeted and offered a beverage. Beer, wine, soda, water or coffee. I accepted a beer. I was immediately seated and asked what I wanted. I explained, in full detail, what I wanted and made sure the stylist understood. She nodded and began. To make a harsh review short, I had to go home and buzz my hair, however the owner contacted me and insisted of giving me a refund after reading my initial review. I'm sure there are quality stylists there but this particular experience was bad enough to avoid another encounter. As an afterthought, I should've asked to speak to the manager and have someone else fix it but I was too caught up in a myriad of unpleasant events to think about it. I appreciate the owner calling me personally and apologizing and feel like that's a proper way to handle a business. I firmly believe that gestures like that go a long way. read more

I needed a day of hair appointment to get my hair did for a wedding while I was in town. Not only did I get a great time, but the lady, Lisa, was super cool, took her time doing an excellent job on my hair, and gave me some great recs on places to go while I was in B'ham. They also don't consider themselves stylists- they're just people who love working with hair and happen to have the training and street cred to back it up. This really set the tone of the place- chill and laid back, not pretentious at all! Prices were also super reasonable for the area. The only downside is it might not be the most tidy place in the world, but I didn't feel like it was unsanitary. I would need a haircut to assess of this place is 5 star worthy, but I'd give it a shot if I needed my hair cut. read more

My experience is always wonderful, professional and exactly what I ask for which is huge for me bc I'm normally never completely satisfied by other stylists. I have very long blonde hair with highlights and the balayage I always ask for from Kaitlyn is on point and until I return to her, I am always complimented on my hair. Ombré distasteful improved by Ashley. (See photo posted) The original stylist who gave me my "ombré" is at a salon in Memphis and I was unable to get refunded. It took a few hours and multiple attempts but she removed the very defiant visible line. I hate I lost so much blonde. I did not achieve what I wanted. **UPDATE** Had to drop this review down from a 5 to 1 star due the argument with the front desk person. I can never remember his name, big guy, tall, dark hair with a moustache. Usually very friendly, until I commented on how they carry a lot of Yellowhammer Creative merch on our last visit. We started to discuss the debacle with Yellowhammer trying to copyright for ownership a PUBLIC domain slogan "It's nice to have you in Birmingham" which has been around since the early 1900s. He became really ugly, and highly argumentative, saying that he went to the town hall meeting with Yellowhammer to defend them. Clearly we had a difference of opinion, which is ok. This is America, difference of opinion abound everywhere and is what makes this country great. What was so unprofessional, and distasteful was his tone of voice with me, and language used, my husband and I were customers, not adversaries, yet that is how he ended up treating us. We both left vowing to never come back again. Not because we disagreed with his opinion, but because of they way he mistreated us when HE found out we disagreed with his own opinion. I cannot recommend this place anymore. I'd rather get my hair torn up to shreds at SuperCuts than give this place any more business. There are plenty of great salons in the area where we're treated with common courtesy. read more

It's a comfy, funky daylight basement full of friendly folks on a beautiful tree-lined street that's an easy walk. Joe's his pleasant best at the front desk and on the phone. I've never had compliments like those I've received on Elle's cuts. An Atlanta concert fan thought my hair "so urban," and a woman at the B'ham courthouse thought it so nice she asked if I was a lawyer! Kaitlin is another favorite. If you want to feel young, these professionals can help you look young. Go inspire their creativity or just let them clean you up. It's a neighborly kind of place and well worth your support. Just got my first haircut from this place yesterday. I called ahead of time and scheduled an appointment but the client before me ran over so I had to wait about 10 minutes before one of the stylists/barbers were free. The location is great and the salon has a really cool, cozy vibe. The best part was my stylist, Caroline. Everyone is very nice, and really do a quality job. I go to Wade for a men's haircut and he always does an amazing job. I'm never going to go to someplace like Great clips, get a terrible haircut, then find another place for my next haircut, only to be just as terrible.
