We had to plan our STL metro area wedding from California and David was there for every step; from the first video chat planning session to staying several hours at my mother's house 4 months later to help us finish the album. He is takes very detailed notes and gives you plenty of time to reflect on what you want. The more details you can give him the better, so he knows exactly what to shoot for. We definitely needed a photographer who would "direct" the more formal portraits and he was on top of everything! 3) Wedding planning: David was very organized from the engagement contract, to the list of shots we needed, and everything in between. He went above and beyond, scouting different areas around the reception location to make sure we had plenty of options on the big day. We did several run throughs on paper and in person. He really acted like wedding planner! 4) Day of: First, David came for the rehearsal dinner even though it was not required. On the big day, he had a second shooter and an assistant (which we discussed). Everything was streamlined and coordinated. The crew was very reverent when needed, but also managed to capture a lot of private moments. After the ceremony, the crew worked with us to get family portraits and wedding party portraits in 2 different locations before heading to the reception! 5) Personal touches: David truly understands how to keep the experience personal. He sent us multiple surprises, on top of everything included in the package. He even hand delivered parent albums even when we could not! 6) Photos: They turned out so well, we did 40 spreads!!! We looked at several photographers during the planning process, but went with Ben because his friendly personality put us at ease immediately. He has a great combination of being very professional and easy going. He always had our best interest in mind, and you could tell that this number one goal was to make sure that we were happy with the photos. For example, I felt sick the morning of the wedding. We were planning on taking our couples photos in the hours before the ceremony, but Ben could see how bad I felt. So he suggested that we just wait and take the photos after the wedding on another day. As a result, I was able to rest and recover and to actually enjoy the evening. After meeting with a photographer, selecting a package, signing a contract, and setting a date for engagement photos, four months later my daughter discovered, the night before the engagement photos, that the photographer no longer worked for Brea, and somehow had not checked her messages in days. Praise to Brea herself, who stepped in at this critical moment to respond to e-mail notes and phone messages, and make the trip to our humble suburb to take care of the engagement photo session. I rationalized this stumble and recovery, imagining that many small business owners experience similar pains when entrusting work to others and/or taking a break. We experienced poor communication and flawed office procedures, followed by a good save by the boss. Subsequently, my daughter was assigned another photographer and assistant to complete the contract; the team arrived on time, and completed the job. Five weeks later, the results were available for viewing and download. Seven-hundred-plus wedding photos and perhaps 150 engagement photos. A photo booth for guests. In the end, there were approx. 1/3 the number of photos from my son's wedding by another firm last year, but perhaps more time given to editing out the duds, so it might be argued that the quality of these is higher. When I look at the photos, certainly I can see artistic shot framing and good photography skills. I also see a more pronounced worry line in the forehead of the bride's father.
