Fun & Clean spot for ice cream, What a joy to visit Joey's Custard and have a cold treat after dinner. The friendly staff were giving us multiple tastings with their unique flavors, we each took our perfect combination and enjoyed our ice cream utilizing the indoor seating. Our trip was too quick, the next time we're in Sanibel Island, we'll be stopping again to Joey's Custard.
This sweet tooth sanctuary has it all! Whether you're craving a midday treat or an epic dessert, Joey's Custard offers an array of sugary snacks for the whole family. Ice cream addicts with food allergies are in luck. During our stay on Sanibel Island, we ventured into JC after dinner one night during the pandemic. Both staff and customers followed social distancing and mask mandates accordingly. The line felt a tad long but friendly staff gave everyone their full attention, offering samples and helping make that big decision. I went with a traditional sundae with espresso chip ice cream. My partner in crime tried a milkshake topped with candied pecans. Babylon at first bite! One of the best ice cream shoppes I've visited while living in Florida. A must visit while vacationing on Sanibel Island. Thankfully the island has many walking trails to help with the poundage influx!
We visited Joey's for a second time on our latest visit to Sanibel and it seems they've gotten even better! Lines were consistent but we always felt safe and socially distanced. Our party had a wide range of desserts including smoothies and ice cream, and everything tasted great. I especially loved the bourbon pecan flavor and thought it was also neat that they used edible pasta straws for their smoothies. They provided masks and sanitizer for those clients who needed it, which was also very thoughtful. Overall, a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth! A must visit at Sanibel.
I'm always on a quest for dairy free ice cream wherever I am. I was so happy to hear that Joey's had a dairy free selection. When we arrived, I was super impressed with both the variety and the measures they take to avoid cross contamination with dairy - keeping it in a separate case! I landed on mocha chip and it was phenomenal! Alongside the ice cream, the atmosphere and the employees were also great! Everyone was so kind and we loved that they had games outside to play. Super fun place with delicious ice cream!
5+ stars!! Omg so good and HUGE portions! It was the perfect sweet treat after a fantastic day at the beach. I was really impressed with the quality. You can really taste the love put in :) I ordered pistachio ice cream with their signature vanilla custard and I couldn't get enough of it! The real flecks of vanilla bean were just beautiful to look at and even better to eat. Can not say enough good things. A must try!
Very good and very cute place! Ordered the Key Lime Pie custard with Green Flash (key lime pie and whipped cream). Delicious! Very rich though, so consider sharing.
This place is a wonderful treat stop for kiddos. It's colorful and has cute signs and a floor piano they can step on. The ice cream is not homemade but the custard is and it's delicious. I highly recommend if you have small children.
Came all the way from Indianapolis, IN for Joeys custard!! Sooo good and employees are super friendly and quick to take your order! If looking for a ice cream flavor- I recommend- ME WANT COOKIE!! Again very good ice cream and custard! Thank you, we will be back!
Excellent quality and excellent service. The custard was rich, creamy and delightful. So tasty! The iced coffee could have used more ice (not cold enough), but still so tasty. I'd definitely come back.
My 1800th review deserves to be Joey's Custard. I've been to Sanibel so many times and I can't believe this is the first time here. It's like being a little kid in a candy store. I love love love this place. There r so many frozen options for everyone. I picked the rum raisin which has a little bit of rum in it and it was so good and refreshing. But I couldn't make up my mind. It took forever. This is such a fun place to hang out too. I loved everything about it, and I will definitely make it a must stop when I'm back in Sanibel.
Key lime pie custard? Yes. Red Velvet Custard? Yes. Friendly game of checkers? Not as much. Check this place out for sure.

The ice cream here is so freaking delicious and good and pure and lovely. My family returned here multiple times during our vacation, which we never tend to do because we like to try new places. I live across the country from Joey's and I still kept our free ice cream punch card because I know I will return one day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was really cool to see Joey himself working and interacting with guests. And I was a big fan of the worship music! Overall, this place just rocks. It simply rocks.
A place like Sanibel needs a great place to grab a cool treat to take a break from the heat of the beach. Thankfully, on Tarpon Bay Rd there is a shop in the Bailey's shopping center that does just that. I am surprised I never found this spot, but we always went to an ice cream shop on the other end of Sanibel. With that closed and the heat intense, it was time to start a new tradition! I got the twisted vanilla and chocolate custard cone, while my fiancée got vanilla and key lime custard. All were rich and creamy and hit the spot on a hot summer day; I think the key lime was unique and very much worth getting another cone! We never got to try the ice cream flavors offered, including the exhausted parent flavor with bourbon, but they should be great to try if they do this well on custard! There's a reason this place averages 5 stars; it's that great for dessert! Try for yourself next time you're on Sanibel!
The bridge tolls are currently removed on Sundays to encourage customers to visit businesses on Sanibel and Captiva Island. My motorcycle group road up there this past weekend. It was sad to see the shopping center that Joey's was a part of is now an empty lot. I don't know what the future will be for businesses like Joey's, but the island businesses that are still trying to make a go of it need our business to survive. Hopefully Joey's will someday return. read more
Amazing selection of ice cream flavors. We ended up getting the Exhausted Parent which had a combination of alcohol and espresso. Why, don't mind if I do! Since we're in Southern Florida, I had to get Key Lime, right? But when I asked for that flavor, she asked me how I want it. They offer it in so many different ways! So I told her to give me what she would order for herself and she gave me "Key Lime Pie in a Cup" which was awesome!!!! The kids are so "Vanilla": one ordered Vanilla and the other Cotton Candy. Whatever we ordered, we all enjoyed our ice creams very much. The giant map where we get to put a sticker on where we came from was fun to see. Parking is free because Joey's is located in a shopping center with its own large parking lot. read more

Best place for dessert in Sanibel! It was so good we had to stop by twice during our vacation. The frozen custard itself is so creamy and the flavor is amazing. I had the twist of key lime and vanilla which was just tart enough. The blends are definitely the highlight which are basically like Coldstone-style creations with your choice of custard flavor. I had the Calico which featured The Bubble Room chocolate cake and strawberries. The best part is they layer the toppings at the bottom and top of the cup, so you have yumminess throughout the whole experience. A must-see in Sanibel. We loved it and would recommend to anyone. COVID-19 and health friendly with masks, sanitizers, gloves, and mosquito spray outside the door. My advice - stop by after a bike ride so you don't taste the guilt of calories lol. read more
This spot was recommended by a local and a must-stop while on Sanibel Island. They have a huge selection of custard and ice cream options, and fun combinations unique only to Joey's. Something that came highly recommended was the layered Sunday with Sanibel's own "orange crunch cake" and vanilla custard. I tried the key lime custard & scoop of the black cherry ice cream - both were perfect flavors and a great combo! P.S. they're closed Sunday's so plan accordingly. read more
The store was cute and clean. It was a little busy but the 3 staff members did a good job of being efficient while still being friendly. I got a customized ice cream sandwich and it was pretty good, nothing mind blowing but a nice mid afternoon treat. Overall good experience and it was nice being able to support a family and veteran owned business. read more

Really cute place. Felt a little overwhelmed with the amount of flavors they have; the menu is endless! I went with the Key Line custard and it was so refreshing and light (perfect after a long beach day). The place itself was very welcoming. A great spot! read more

One of my favorite ice cream spots on earth!! The creamiest custard and the flavors are crazy good. After sample about 8 ( thank y'all for letting me taste it ALL) landed on the tropical storm custard. It tasted like cherry, orange, creamy summer goodness. I'd drive back just for this cone. read more

This place is amazing the custard is so smooth and so full of flavor. So many options. While on vacation we stopped here everyday but Sunday because they are closed. The service is fast and friendly and again this custard is amazing and options are endless I would give this place 6 stars if I could read more

"We don't sell it but we'll make it!" I came in asking for hot chocolate. Since it's not on the menu, they made it for me anyway. And let me tell you it's the most delicious I've had in awhile! Great customer service. The ice cream is delicious, we also had the kiddie cone of chocolate ice cream and peanut butter cup. So good! Highly recommend. read more
Seriously, 3 days on Sanibel island and we were here every single day. Joey's is located in the same plaza as Bailey's making it easy to get the basics you may need and dessert. So Joey has a partnership with The Bubble Room on Captiva Island and brings their cakes back to layer with the custard. Delicious. I saw that they offered The Scotch Bonnet with the Orange Cake from The Bubble Room. Sold. We headed over. It was sooooo worth it. In face we went back for it and tried all the custards lasted with the cakes they had to offer. Oh, the Limelo custard, even though we mispronounced it each time, was perfect. Lime and Tangelo. Refreshing, sweet, subtle. Keep that coming! read more

I went here with my family (7 people) while on vacation in Captiva. We called ahead to ask if they had dairy free items on the menu and Joey himself picked up the phone to assure us they had sorbet, Italian ice, and a vegan flavor as well as gluten free cones. There were plenty of options for everyone in our party, and everyone was happy we made the drive! The workers were friendly and told me that they were making a special-batch vegan ice cream the next day and we should come back to try it! I had the vegan vanilla chip ice cream and it was delicious! 5 stars for a great ice cream spot with choices for everyone! read more

After driving by this place everyday, we finally stopped. And oh so happy we did. Tons and tons of flavors and even more than one vegan/lactose free option to choose from (which made me very happy!). And everything we had was delish! These smiles say it all read more
Our first visit to Joey's and wow. What a huge variety of ice creams, custards, waffles etc. Joey has just a couple of large tables inside and a comfy couch inside and several tables outside on the covered porch. The four of us ordered different ice creams and custards and all flavors were very good. They even offer two different gluten free cones to choose from. My sister said the gluten free cone was really good. This is definitely a place we will return to and recommend you to visit too. read more

Visited this ice cream shop in August during off season. There was one guy in the shop but he was really patient and let us try so many flavors. I opted for the banana fosters in a kids size because I didn't want that much but he gave a generous scoop. The ice cream was creamy and had great flavor. I can see why this is one of the most popular ice cream locations on sanibel. They offer check in deal of $2 off $10 and have a different deal on each day of the week. read more
