The gigantic counter displays a myriad of delicious cheeses, hams, olives, pates, anti-pasti and salads whilst the nearby baskets display fresh sticks and loaves of bread. To top it off, they have dozens of wooden shelves groaning with all kinds of lovely store cupboard treats from organic granola, cereals and cookies to oat cakes, chutneys, olive oils, vinegars, sauces and spices. Now, where did I put that darn lottery ticket?

Nothing complicated - in the end, I ordered a Greek salad and a plate of Serrano ham rather than the pricier mains on the blackboards. I'm not sure how two really basic things could be so disappointing. I think it's because on the surface, this looks like a place that prides itself on sourcing and attention to detail. On the specials during my visit were such items as hand foraged local samphire, Cumbrian lamb and Pink's award winning sausages. So why was the Greek salad about 50% raw onion? Why did it feature those mealy crunchy supermarket basics tomatoes, cold from the fridge? Even the black olives mentioned on the menu were green. And they clearly did have black olives in the kitchen, because my four slices of Serrano ham (almost £6) came topped with a single olive. They boasted it was "20 month aged" - most of it had clearly been in their fridge, as it featured a faint tang of refrigerator and managed to be unpleasantly rubbery. Not sure how Serrano ham can even go rubbery but there you go. If you've boasting of excellent ingredients then it's unacceptable for the basics to fail so badly. I wouldn't bother returning.

Their menu's offer delicious combinations of fillings so there is usually something that suits everyone's taste. The food is all of a healthy nature and even their burgers are great quality. I ordered a burger (freshly cooked in a couple of minutes) with raw onions and mayonnaise for just £2 which was served in a large plain white bun; that definitely filled me and I would go back again whenever I'm in need of a convenient lunch. Since they boast such a wide variety of ingredients such as various pre-cooked meats, sliced salads and other condiments, the choice is really yours. In addition, they sell jacket potatoes which sound mouth-watering and tempting (especially on a cold day)! Clarke's Richmond Deli is much better than your average sandwich bar. Plus, the lovely aromas that are emitted make you want to go even more.

If that could be a motto or brand slogan for a deli - sorry butty shop! - then that might be a good one for Clarke's. It seems to denegrate them some what but this succint description of a fine sandwich emporium is meant entirely in the best possible way. There seems to be little mucking about with things like rocket - which I hate, it is horrible no matter how many chefs and foodies use it these days, it's a weed! - Clarke's serve good, some might say traditional sandwiches, in a straightforward manner like roast beef, ham - just ham nowt fancy done to it - and various chickens - coronation and tikka basically - and all at very cheap prices - usually below £3 - for a good size butty.

For tapas, we figured that was no problem -- and it was no problem. The staff -- all young and seeming to have a good time together -- was friendly and efficient. The food was outstanding, on par with our favorite tapas place in Barcelona. Padron peppers perfeectly blistered and seasoned; patatas bravas crisp and hot; grilled scallop done just right and resting on garlic/oil/parsley -- too simple to be called a sauce but perfect with the scallop. We had five dishes in all, and were pleasantly surprised by each, and asked our server, Joe -- cheerful and charming -- if we had missed anything he would highly recommend. He paused briefly, and then suggested the sizzling prawns; he was spot on, they were sweet and succulent and set off wonderfully by the hint of heat in the oil. A memorable dinner from start to finish, all in 65 minutes. Bravo, Salt House Tapas!

No wonder she was keeping it secret, easy to do in this not so salubrious location, as this family run Greek restaurant is hard to beat on quality and value. Decor, music, menu and owner( George) are most definitely Greek but ably helped by his scouse son and daughter to bring that bit of the med to a Liverpool back street. The menu has a great range of fine char grill cooked meat, and other greek favourites including excellent home crafted soups, dips, salads, stuffed vine leaves etc and the mezes is hard to finish ( both the meat and veggie version). My favourite is the succulent and tender chicken kebabs but my vegetarian sister says the plaki ( butter beans in tomato) beans are hard to beat. The place is favourite of many university staff and students located just across the road from the main campus and lunch and evenings find the initiated enjoying quality fresh cooked mediterranean fare in the friendly company of George, I recommend you try it.

Mangetout is all about choice - there is so much to choose from. It's likely that you will find at least one food item to purchase. Starting in the morning, they do yummy breakfast baps. At the moment that have a bin lid breakfast on offer at £3.50 available till 11am and includes two bacon rashes, two sausages, a fried egg, beans, two hash browns and mushrooms. Getting to lunchtime and loads of different sandwiches to choose from - club and gourmet. Then there are panini's, jacket potatoes, soup and salad boxes (carrot and sultana, pesto and pasta etc). There is an online ordering service for those of us you just can't make it out of the office. They also have a section on their website that tells you want 'today's specials' are. Like it!

I found it (very near to Pret, admittedly) but this place was very different. When I first looked in I thought it was a mere take-out hatch with limited bar stool seating, but there is a small seating area inside also. I really liked the atmosphere in here; just inches from the busy Castle Street, the place feels lively enough, you still feel connected to the bustle outside, and yet it's quiet and relaxing. Near the edge of both the shopping district and the business district, there is a mix of customers, however there were more of the suited and booted sort during my visit, grabbing a quick French Brie and Cranberry sauce bap and a minted lamb and natural yoghurt vienna roll for lunch, you know how it is. I was surprised to note that these rather fancy offerings did not demand expense claims however, as nearly all of the sandwiches from the Deli Selection (most basic: three cheese and spring onion/ honey roast ham and mustard) Club Selection (beef, turkey, chicken..) and Gourmet Selection (posh nosh: French goat's cheese, stilton and hot rashers, chorizo and aforementioned minted lamb) are under £3. The staff were nice enough; I was peeved that I was given neither a tray nor a saucer on which I could dispose of my teabag; it's a pet hate of mine, abandoning the soggy thing on a clean table..watching tea seep out..threatening jacket sleeves and newspapers and then realizing too late that my drink is not quite strong enough and I can't redunk, and for £1.30 I really expected a saucer. I was, however, impressed with the selection of greetings cards on sale; it seemed an incongruous double business venture, and yet, I saw at least five that I wanted and actually bought some of the wrapping paper! I'm going to look out for the Old Hall Street shop and try one of the salad boxes, they looked very nice indeed: crisp, fresh salad mix and a choice of plain and sauced meats, all freshly prepared (anddd the preparer wears gloves; I like it when they wear gloves!)
