Monica was awesome and they were very helpful. I'm embroiled in a lawsuit by being rear-ended Nov 2015. My insurance approved visits in JANUARY, to which I attened 4 before they denied my claim. My attorney is STILL fighting them to cover as in VA an insurance company cannot legally deny coverage in a car accident; at the time of this posting. My neck damage was so bad I couldn't lift a gallon of milk (8.8#!!!) without getting a migraine. I was again approved in MAY to begin therapy AGAIN with 5 MONTHS absence. The final note, they understood the lawsuit issue and kindly allowed me to continue therapy while it's all being worked out. I am MUCH better, still having lifting issues, but the damage is exacerbated by my age. (sigh) But I can FUNCTION and don't need to live off pain killers! I am still not allowed to lift but I can sleep, move and dress myself (never thought I'd be happy about that!). Yes, the front desk is need of customer service lessons, but they are also probably overwhelmed by rude people yelling at THEM when their insurance has issues or I saw one rude gal yell at the woman because "I've had this appointment time, what do you mean I can't have it again?!?!" Perhaps SOMEONE else had that time slot booked! Why I booked MY appointments 4 weeks in advance!! I've seen those people suffer all kinds of verbal abuse. They handle it like troopers. Dr. John Bruno is an excellent physician. I have been going to him for over 15 years. He is very thorough and is able to get to the root cause of an orthopedic problem because of his expertise. It was and continues to be very important to me, given my disability, that I am treated by an outstanding orthopedic surgeon like Dr. Bruno! I've been to see Dr. Bruno several times (not that I'm accident prone or anything!), and I've been very pleased with his treatment every time. I broke my foot; his diagnosis included advising me of a serious potential for misaligned healing and made an appointment for me with an amazing practice of doctors who specialize in foot and ankle issues. I ended up with a stress fracture of one vertebra after a skiing accident; his treatment and that of the physical therapists in his office healed it quickly and without complications. I needed surgery on a shoulder; after his diagnosis, Dr. Bruno helped me find a great surgeon. Most recently, I sought Dr. Bruno's advice regarding knee pain. After an office exam, he ordered an MRI that revealed a torn meniscus which has been successfully treated through physical therapy (the therapists who were practicing in his office are now in a separate practice in the same building). It's taken me 70 years to experience all of these orthopedic issues, so this is not as bad as it might sound. Nevertheless, I know I have been lucky to have Dr. Bruno on my side. I've never had a problem getting a prompt appointment with him; his professionalism and skill have always been top-notch; and, while I'm hoping I will never need him again, I'm happy to know he is there when I need him. read more

Dr. Bruno won't see patients in the afternoon. At all. It's morning appointments only, making it tough for working folks. So, -1 star Dr. Bruno seems competent enough, and he's very nice and will take time to talk. But he seems to be more interested in directing people to his office's rehab facility than anything else (not that a rehab facility is 'wrong', it just feels sort of automatic, without individual consideration). Either that, or a referral to National Sports Medicine Institute. Another -1 star. Overall 3/5. Good enough, I suppose, but could be a lot better. read more

After suffering from sciatica for the past three months, seeing countless doctors, having an epidural cortisone shot, going for physiotherapy and trying just about everything else in the book, I finally had an appointment with Dr. Bruno. There isn't enough positive feedback I could give to do justice to the care I received. I was feeling hopeless about my condition, resigned to the thought of never getting better and Dr. Bruno gave me hope, inoformative care, explained things from A-Z, and walked me through the results of my MRI so I understood what I was looking at. He's the only doctor throughout my experience of dealing with sciatic pain who truly listened, took the time to review in depth what I should expect throughout my recovery, and mapped a comprehensive way forward. He didn't peddle mainstream pain medication like every other doctor I saw, he didn't tout the latest and greatest methods for a quick fix, he didn't even tell me what I wanted to hear, Dr. Bruno simply provided good, old fashioned medicine and quality patient care. Even his staff were amazing, warm, friendly and compassionate. If you're suffering from chronic pain, it's worth a visit to Dr. Bruno's office. read more

I'm a big fan of Orthopedic Medicine of Alexandria and Dr. Bruno. I broke my hand in Dec 2010 and Dr. Bruno and his staff have done a fantastic job of seeing me through the recovery. There are two halves of the clinic. The first is Dr. Bruno and the orthopedic side of the house. The second half is the in-house Physical Therapy department and the associated physical therapists. I have experience with both sides and I'm equally happy with both. Dr. Bruno is a fabulous doctor with over 40 years of experience. Yes, 40. He also has excellent patient communication. I saw three different orthopedists during my recovery and my biggest complaint was the lack of communication on what to expect, what to look for, what to avoid, etc. Most orthopedists just said "you're not healed yet, come back in a few weeks, have a nice day." Dr. Bruno was the only doctor that took the time to explain everything, and he did it without being asked. He went over all the x-rays, he described to me what was going on inside my hand, and he outlined all the steps we needed to take. I actually first saw a different doctor, and went to Dr. Bruno for a second opinion when my recovery was taking longer than the standard 6-8 weeks. Dr. Bruno recognized the problem and got me on a different track...I was vastly improved in 2 weeks. Dr. Bruno also recognized that I was developing a potentially severe disorder and got me into a specialist ASAP. I highly recommend him as a physician and an orthopedist. The physical therapy department is also fantastic. After my bones healed they start working with me to recover mobility. They have two great therapists with a lot of experience between them. The office is also fully stocked with high-quality work-out machines and therapy devices. Both therapists (Monica and Heidi) take a very hands-on and tailored approach to each patient. You'll get a routine that fits your specific needs and condition, not a cookie cutter routine. The ladies also keep you on pace and really push you if you try to slack off. This is important. The only consideration for future patients is any condition that requires surgery or any specialized needs. Dr. Bruno is an orthopedic generalist and will send you to a specialized orthopedist if he thinks you need it. Also, he no longer does orthopedic surgery. Beyond that I really haven't found fault with Orthopedic Medicine of Alexandria and I highly recommend it. p.s. Saw Dr. Bruno for pain in my hip. He's not really used to dealing with young active people and the related injuries. He suggested an MRI, and when I asked if there should be contrast or not he was uncertain. I had read online that contrast was pretty important to see torn labrums (the suspected condition), but he kind of dismissed my online MD knowledge. I got the MRI, and then he looked at it and said he wasn't used to seeing the hip joint (gets an old lady maybe once a month), so he directed me over to the national sports medicine institute. If he knew he would have a tough time understanding the MRI, why not send me over to the institute in the first place and save me a copay???? read more

I've seen Dr. Bruno for two separate issues. The first was something in my hip, which he successfully diagnosed as enostatis not requiring surgery. The second was pain and weakness in my shoulder. I feared it was a torn rotator cuff. He examined me, took an x-ray to ensure there wasn't something else and then diagnosed it as encapsulated tendonitis. He referred me to physical therapy. The physical therapy shop is top notch. The entire staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. During treatment, you will not be on your own as I have been during other PT elsewhere. You get one-on-one treatment here. They ensure you are doing the exercises correctly and will keep track of your progress. On top of all that, eveyone is very friendly and outgoing. I was kind of sad at the end of my therapy because I had come to enjoy talking with the therapists. There's plenty of parking here and it's convenient just off Route 1 and 495. Highly recommend! read more

A friend told me about Dr. Bruno, he was raving about him how he helped him. So I made an appointment, I was surprised I did not have to wait. The staff was very nice. Dr. Bruno was wonderful, he was very attentive and listen to my problem, and he had good suggestions. I had to return several times for injections and I never waited. Dr. Bruno does not like to answer questions and I was left feeling as if he did not know the answers. His staff is condescending and acts like you are bothering them. I would rather see a physician that is confident and willing to spend at least 10-15 minutes with me. When the staff is mean and unfriendly, I wonder what there is about the office that creates this type of atmosphere. Good Luck read more

If I could give zero stars to this place, I probably would. I agree with other reviews on here citing the extreme coldness of the office staff. No matter what you do, they are never happy to see you and not welcoming. Dr. Bruno does not impress me at all. My co-pay requires $80 every time I see him and after about eight or nine minutes he's itching to get to his next patient. On my second appointment he dismissed some serious concerns I had, saying it just wasn't related to the knee. I was actually not going to see him a third time. I was just going to continue to try and fit in some of the physical therapy appointments he recommended at his office around my busy traveling schedule. Out of all of my appointments I was not able to make one and did call ahead of time understanding that they would charge me. With their limited hours and a busy schedule flying in and out of airports, I was doing the best I could. However, this last appointment when I missed the turn off to come right to the office and they were completely inflexible with their policy. Unfortunately, when that happens in the height of traffic you are on 495 and it takes you 20 minutes to get back. Although the office person at this time understood what I was saying, she told me over the phone if I wasn't there after 15 minutes I would be charge for missed appointment fee. After explaining it may be 18 minutes not 15 minutes but I was in route to be there, she kept trying to press the issue of 15 minutes was the cutoff. I could understand if I was late or missed several appointments, but this was not the case. When I arrived 18 minutes after, she had locked the door and told me that I would be charged a $50 missed appointment fee. I still have a very difficult time understanding the rationale behind this policy when my initial appointment was for an hour. Additionally, when you are taken back there are commonly 3 to 5 people being seen simultaneously in that timeframe. The physical therapists are constantly switching back-and-forth and lose trains of thought and are not sure where certain charts are due to the multiple people at the same appointment time. Having a sister who is a physical therapist, and having several other times in my life receiving physical therapy, this practice seems pretty ridiculous to me. However, my knee had gotten strengthened and the physical therapist were very nice, so I rolled with it. However, if you do the same you will be treated coldly and unempathetically by the office staff, have to share your appointment with five other people and see a doctor who cares very little about his patients. I'm shocked this office is in business and retains or has any patients. I would definitely recommend anywhere but this place. read more
