We came in for a broken ankle, but it was treated as if it were not a serious issue. An MRI was necessary for the next step in treatment, yet the request was not submitted to the insurance in a timely manner. We had to repeatedly follow up and push the office just to get the request sent. In the meantime, we were left waiting in pain without proper support or protection while waiting for the MRI to be scheduled and completed. Even after the MRI was completed and the report was sent to the doctor's office the next day, no one contacted us to schedule a follow-up appointment or begin treatment. Isn't the office supposed to monitor this and follow up with patients to move treatment forward? Overall, this was a very frustrating and upsetting experience.

If you want to meet a doctor who cares more about money than treating patients, try this place. I…read morevisited Dr. Kartalian in June to seek help for my ankle pain. After a simple consultation and X-ray, I was diagnosed with the need for an ankle brace and physical therapy. Due to my busy schedule, I purchased the ankle brace first and wore it for a few days, but my ankle hurt even more than before, and I developed a large blister near my inner ankle bone. After wearing it twice, I had to stop using it. When I called the office to request a return, I was told that returns were not possible for used products. I accepted this and didn't argue further. However, I felt extremely unfair when I received the bill. An ankle brace that can be bought on Amazon for $33 was billed at $300, and despite paying an $80 copay at the office visit, I still had to cover an additional $110. In total, I ended up paying $190 plus the insurance-covered amount. To sum up, I paid $680 in total and ended up with more ankle pain. No matter how capitalistic the society is, a doctor's primary job is to treat patients, not to be a merchant.

I have a very complicated history of foot and ankle problems and Dr. Hurst has been an amazing help…read moreto me. First, I injured my left ankle and saw two different orthopedists over a series of two years to deal with pain and inflammation. The first orthopedist said that I had Achilles tendinitis and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy. I experienced an intermittent lessening of symptoms but was never fully out of pain. Unfortunately, this orthopedist seemed satisfied with this result and when I expressed a desire to walk without pain, he told me to just give it time and offered no further treatment or suggestion. I got a second opinion from another orthopedist. This second doctor did an MRI and said I had small tears / cysts / swelling over the tendon. He sent me to physical therapy again and gave me more anti-inflammatories. The physical therapist said that my ankle was too swollen to safely do any exercise, so he focused on getting the swelling to go away. I did this for about two months and, while my pain level improved some, I was still limping and miserable. I went back to the orthopedist, who said he couldn't do anything else for me. I then suffered a new injury to both ankles simultaneously. The pain was so bad that I could barely stand upright, let alone walk. I could not get a rush appointment with the orthopedist, so I made an appointment with my family doctor. She was aghast at the condition and swelling of my ankles. I explained my treatment history to her and she suggested that I see a podiatrist instead of going back to the orthopedist. I contacted Dr. Hurst and he saw me immediately. I had sprained my right ankle and further injured the left Achilles tendon. Dr. Hurst was thorough and kind, and I felt like he was the first doctor to work with me who understood my desire to walk without pain and who would keep working until we had met that goal. For several months, I went through a variety of orthotics, splints, and braces, and had a long series of steroid injections to try to get the swelling under control. My sprained ankle completely healed and, while I had some much-appreciated improvement in my Achilles tendon, I couldn't completely shake the pain. After a great deal of consideration, Dr. Hurst and I agreed that anatomical foibles in my foot and ankle were impeding my recovery and that surgery to lengthen my Achilles tendon was the best permanent solution. The surgery was performed at the fabulous Inova Northern VA Surgical Center. Recovery was long and painful, but Dr. Hurst had been VERY clear about what to expect from the surgery, so I was fully prepared for this. I am pleased to report that my Achilles tendon is now completely recovered! In summary, Dr. Hurst's office is clean and efficient, and his staff is friendly. Dr. Hurst and his staff all remember who I am at each visit. This may sound inconsequential, but it makes me happy. Dr. Hurst takes time with me during our appointments, listens to what I say, answers my (sometimes stupid) questions, and is a knowledgeable doctor and skilled surgeon. I am forever grateful to him for working so hard to make me pain free!

As a travel athlete, the goal of rehab is not only healing but returning to peak performance. The first PT who assessed my kid was not friendly - I would probably say she was a bit condescending, and made us feel bad for allowing knee bending exercises, something both the surgeon and the previous PT had encouraged. She instructed us to stop all bending exercises, including heel slides, until further notice. When she sarcastically asked my kid to lift a straight leg and immediately pointed out the inability to do so, my kid explained that the foot was stuck on the table base. No chance to let her try again, PT moved on to whatever was next on her list of things to do. Despite nothing appearing abnormal in recovery, the PT dismissed our explanations and remained condescending throughout. I simply said we'd email the doctor's protocol to her rather than argue. We later learned from the second PT - not from scheduling, check-in, or even the first PT herself - that the initial PT was leaving in a couple of weeks as she was a traveling PT, and we'd be reassigned to someone else. Given that ACL rehab typically lasts 7-12 months (a timeframe she herself confirmed), it was disappointing that this wasn't disclosed upfront. It reflected a lack of continuity and care for the patient experience. The second PT was much kinder and even seemed surprised by the "no bending" instruction. He gave my kid very basic quad engagement exercises on the table with light stretching. However, he was clearly managing multiple patients at once, leaving my kid waiting between exercises. The appointment also ran to about 80 minutes, despite being told it would last an hour, and only ended because I mentioned we had to get to school. Afterward, I contacted the doctor, who advised us to stop going there immediately since not bending the knee could harm recovery. I would not recommend this place, especially for young athletes.
