I wrote off someplace like GC, knowing this wasn't their core business and unwilling to risk the higher probability of landing with a relatively unskilled tech who may only know the very basics of setup. Frankly, I didn't know if my guitar would need more than that but I wasn't going to find out the hard way, wasting my time and money or getting back a guitar that either wasn't fixed or wasn't fixed properly. I came across Kevin Chubbuck Guitars by phoning another local luthier, one who services/repairs acoustics and principally produces high-end handmade custom built acoustic guitars. He highly recommended Kevin, as a former employee who did fine work and one who had since moved on to further hone his craft before setting up his own shop and line of custom-built guitars. After a couple of email exchanges and a phone call to Kevin, I was convinced he was who I was looking for. After a quick review of my guitar, I was given a thorough walk through of the steps he was going to take to fully diagnose and correct the reported issue and explained the possible causes for it. Kevin even demonstrated how he was going to do the work with some of the tools he was going to use and why. Very reassuring and, for me, a worthwhile education. I really appreciated that level of detail. This wasn't just a drop-off, sign here, and see you in a week deal. It was engaging and very customer focused. I left Kevin's shop with complete confidence in his abilities and knowledge that I had found someone who was easy to work with and solely interested in doing only high quality work on anything he puts his hands to, be it an expertly crafted handmade guitar or a lowly setup on a Les Paul Studio. The work was done quickly and the type of corrective action that needed to be done was confirmation for me that I came to the right place. The price? Exceptional and no more than a routine setup would have been, despite the labor required to fix the underlying problems that would have prevented a proper setup. I found the entire experience a pleasure, I got to know Kevin a bit on a personal level, and he made me feel like I was his best customer despite being a new customer with a relatively simple and inexpensive scope of work. I would highly recommend Kevin to anyone looking for a genuinely nice, honest, knowledgeable, highly skilled and easy to work with luthier. He has a lot of training and certifications, has served as an expert witness in property valuations in federal court so his experience was particularly helpful to me as the buyer, trying to understand and counter the deficiencies in the seller's appraisal report. For example, Rusty saved me thousands off the price and my future condo fees by discovering the sq ft of living space was off by more than 200 sq ft - as advertised and listed in the condo docs - a huge savings for a 1050 sq ft condo! His market insight was also grounding when it came to understanding the true value of various aspects of my potential purchase in a hot north shore MA market. I could spend all day here listening to Gino Stories. I brought a 40-year-old bass here because the guitar tech in the back of the shop is phenomenal and regionally renowned. If not nationally. Despite being completely booked, he found time to tune it up a little bit and give me some great advice on my next purchase. I found this place on the recommendation of a small store in woburn center. The front of the store is all guitars and gear and gino. Yes there is a Gino at least I think that's his name. There are probably at least fifty or seventy five beautiful guitars and basses for purview and plucking, but you have to be very careful. Gino provides a great illustrious story for each instrument. And will talk endlessly about them. You can tell that he is a consummate guitarist end musician. Very outgoing. And communicative. I bought an old Ampeg cabinet a pedal and a soft-case for my bass. Very reasonable prices. Very reasonable advice. Fantastic selection. Not to mention the genius in the back of the store that can find a fix for anything and knows everything about anything guitar. Easily worth a 45 mlnute or more long drive to get here. You won't be disappointed even if you walk out of here empty handed. The place is a music school, museum and an ICU for stringed instruments electric and acoustic. One of a kind without a doubt. Is it the eighth wonder of the world?
