This is the premier shop of all my numerous affiliated locations that I visit. The proprietor Matthew Hayes is fine outstanding gentleman and a great American and is a multi generational tobacconist. Located in the historic shop space near the downtown walking the mall the space is historically powerful. There are no TVs because Matthew, like I, believe you should have a conversation while smoking... excellent selection good prices incredible service BYOB and outstanding location and a beautiful colonial city... As you would expect, I was able to get what I needed...a new lighter, a small humidor and a handful of cigars. What I really appreciated was the welcoming atmosphere, knowledgeable yet congenial service, pleasant people and, of course, great aromas! I have been to a majority of the cigar shops in the surrounding area, mostly in Loudoun county. I am 20, and very much enjoy my youthful swagger - however this tends to make cigar shop employees think I'm just like every other punk kid that walks in looking for a Davidoff. Truth is, I don't know much about cigars, but I do know what I like. I probably have something around 100 cigars under my belt.. Not bad. I also own 3 pipes which I very much enjoy. enough about my tobacco resumé.. John B. Hayes is the only shop I've spent time in, where I am treated as a true customer/patron. All of the staff there are very knowledgeable and always more than willing to make a good suggestion. I work down the street from the shop, so I go there, buy a good smoke and take a load off after a hard shift. A great feature about the shop is that it has high ceilings and nice hardwood floors - you can sit in one of the comfy leather chairs and not feel like you're in a burning building. read more

Any time I travel one of the first thing I look for in town is a good cigar store. Large and inviting inside with hardwood flooring and big, comfy leather chairs this was my kind of place. All of the chairs are up front at a large store front window, so you can light up a good cigar, set back and watch the world go by. The sales staff was very helpful and friendly as well. They carry mostly the higher end cigars, which can get pricey, but with weekly specials you can find a good cigar in your price range. As Mark Twain said " the bad, cheap cigars are the ones for me" But any place you can sit back and smoke a cigar and strike up a conversation with fellow cigar smokers is ok in my book. read more

I had been in the shop several times but tonight was the first time I actually sat down and enjoyed the shop. We took our team to John B. Hayes to reward them with cigars and were blown away by how incredible the service was. He not only helped us pick out cigars, but we learned a lot about them in the process. The owner is very respectful, accommodating, professional and knows his line of work like the back of his hand. I would recommend this tabaco shop above any other. Incredible shop run by great people. I stumbled across this little spot while researching Winchester before my husband and I visited for a weekend anniversary trip. I called JB Hayes Tobbaconist to see if they could set aside a few cigars as a surprise for my husband and they were incredibly helpful- recommending a couple of things and offering to package it all up as a gift for my husband and have it ready for our hotel valet to pick it up from across the street so it would be ready at our hotel as a surprise. How wonderful! It really helped kick off our weekend- my husband loved the cigars and we walked down to the shop to thank them and check the place out. We left with some other purchases as well- and everyone at the shop was so nice and helpful- again! Will be returning to this spot whenever we are back in Winchester. read more

A dark, wet november night brought me to Winchester,  VA & I found the John B Hayes Tobbaconist shop. I have smoked cigars off and on for years in multiple countries and multiple cities in the USA. I walked into the shop and knew at once that the selection and knowledge of the staff & it's customers was diverse and extensive. The weeks that followed as a return customer I discovered that the shop is a place of real honest Virgina character with an impressive cast of characters from far and wide, young and old & experienced and inexperienced smokers. I just discovered my love for cigars a couple months ago and was excited to see a cigar shop in the town me and my wife just moved to. The two of us stepped in on on 8/9/20 shortly after 12 and were greeted poorly and didn't ask if we needed assistance. As me and my wife browsed about the shop another gentleman came in shortly after us and was brightly greeted and was asked if he needed any assistance. Once the gentleman asked his question the shop keeper answered warmly. I finally asked the shop teller if he carried any cigars that carried any strong floral notes. The Shop keeper was clearly irritated by my question and stated " Tobacco is a plant yea? It's all going to be floral". His tone and body language were obviously off center and me and my wife were taken aback. My 8+ years of customer service knows when service is poor. If I had a guest come into a bar (years passed) that I worked at and with their meal he/she would like a glass of wine that's acidic. My response is not " all wine has acidity yea" I ask if there's any particular notes they're looking for? Fullness of the wine etc. This service not only makes the guest satisfied, but also makes them leave with a bit more knowledge then when they came in with. I bought 2 Persian kings and two others. But when I left, this new practice of mine wasn't deepen nor was I thinking of the cigars that I purchased. I thought of the "selective" service that I was given. Sadly that will be my first and last purchase for I cannot support an establishment that treats people differently off background, race etc. I'm on the hunt for a new cigar shop. read more

Visiting my brother and father in Winchester, Va. I asked if there was a tobacconist in town and fortunately my brother recommended this one. Most tobacconists these days are cigar shops, not true tobacconist. This place is the real deal, plenty of bulk store blended pipe tobaccos. After talking with the gentleman working the counter I went with a Virginia Burley blend named Winchester (when in Rome). I was also able to sample one of their English blends (very good also). Everyone (even customers) was friendly and knowledgeable. read more
