I think I showed a little too much interest but hey, all in the name of research... Suddenly, he told me to swing right. I pushed open the door of a place I hadn't even known existed to enter a busy pub with the ubiquitous "Rubber & Friends" belting out the tunes. People chatted animatedly, sang along and danced. Extremely lively for a Sunday night! I felt like I'd been given the password to a secret underworld. A guy who'd been strutting around like a peacock in a Man United jersey "entertained" the crowd from the table-tops. Just as the band were reaching the crescendo of their set, someone knocked over an entire table of drinks and nearly flooded the place. The barmaid muttered, "I'll kill them" before whipping out the mop, then pouring them another... Sunday is definitely the new Saturday!

The bar is divided into two parts with a good 20 somethings crowd most weekends in the lounge. Nice selection of beers also going beyond your usual Guinness, Heiniken and Corona.

We called a few minutes before our arrival and the host graciously reserved a table for us, which was appreciated since they were dealing with a busy Saturday evening dinner service. For a starter, we shared an order of their smoked salmon salad, which came in a pretty display of mixed greens with feta and peeled orange, lightly dressed and sprinkled with freshly ground pepper, all anchored in a triangle of folded fillets and topped with crunchy fennel strips. It was refreshing to see that the bottom of the plate was practically dry after the last bite as opposed to the typical puddle of dressing in many restaurant salads. The dressing was citrus based, which provided a nice contrast to the salmon and cheese but the acidity took center stage to the rest of the flavors. My husband ordered for his entrée an 8 oz centre-cut fillet which came with a cornucopia of sides - a large, grilled flat cap mushroom, a slice of beefsteak tomato, onion rings, French fries and mashed potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was flavourful and had a nice non-pasty consistency. I was allowed to partake in the fries, which were beautifully done to a light golden exterior with fluffy interior and no after taste of over-used frying oil. Although the fillet was slightly undercooked (he asked for medium, and it came out medium rare), my husband found the dish generally satisfactory. My pan-fried fillets of seabass came on a bed of sauté mix - baby potatoes, roasted red pepper, greens, peas, shallots and fennel - a nice combination of raw nutty sweetness with some crunch to offset the buttery fish. Delicious! We wrapped up dinner with coffee and four scoops of ice cream to share (the 4th scoop was on the house!). Our entire dining experience was made extraordinary by the excellent service of the wait staff. They were professional and genuinely attentive. Definitely we'll return.

I was confused at the beginning, but the carvery is located at the back of the pub. You go there, pick your food and then go find a table. But if you want dessert or snack you order it from the menu (?). Anyway, they had a 2 courses meal for 13.95 - what I found a good deal. The roasted beef and the stuffing were really really good. I totally recommend it. The food comes in a big portion I nearly had no space left to dessert - but I had it in end! My friends had beef burritos (good) and fish from the carvery (boring). For dessert, death by chocolate. Man, lots of chocolate, I assure you. The staff were not that friendly (except from the lady at the cashier) but at least they worked fast.
