Today was the 4th or 5th times my daughter came to see Dr . Chiu.. Dr. Chiu was referred to us by her cousin when my daughter turned 18 and needed a family doctor. After reading all the other low reviews, I felt in fairness I need to post our experiences with Dr. Chiu and his staffs. Yes, I agreed with some of the other reviews that staffs were not too friendly, but i don't think they were rude.. On the good note..today when we were there those unfriendly staffs were no longer there( perhaps Dr. Chiu read reviews and addressed the problem. So he does care) the new receptionist there today was nice and friendly, and we left there with smiles and relieved on our faces.. But that wasn't the main reason why we left with smiles our faces.. My daughter had to get blood draw for annual exam and for a school requirement. She was nervous for a whole week because she had really awful experiences in the past with getting her blood draw. She has no visible veins at all! The last attempt of blood draw was in Oconnor hospital, which left her with 2 huge bruises and no blood, and not to mention she passed out, luckily I was there and caught her on time before she hit the floor.. We explained to Dr. Chiu her pass horrible experience and her history of passing out.. Dr. Chiu not only drew her blood laying down , but he drew her blood himself and was super gentle! Yes, he had to tried on 2 different spots, but we were expecting that would happen. My daughter told me she didn't feel a bit of pain on his first attempt, and only felt a poked while he was drawing her blood. He was very calm and gentle the whole time .. (I've been with her every and each time she got her blood drew, sadly but most people usually get really frustrated after a few tries and can become really rough) so as a mother, I really appreciated Dr. Chiu gentle and calmness the whole time. Yes, I realized usually it's his medical assistance that draw the blood , but if you're one of those people like my daughter that doesn't have any visible veins, let them know and ask if Dr. Chiu can draw your blood himself . As for Dr. Chiu demeanor, yes he's not a talkative person like myself, but my daughter reminded me that like herself, he likes to address the problem and treats you and that's what we all come to him for, not to have an cheerful conversation with him. She's absolutely correct because he had alway treated all her medical problems . She too is studying in the medical field and her personality is very similar like his. So if you're looking for a great doctor that will treat your problem , then Dr. Chiu is the doctor to go to, but if you're looking for a doctor who cares about having a great conversation with you instead of treating you then he's not the doctor for you. As for the imprinted credit card on file, I'm business owner myself and had my handful of problems of customers disputing their card charges after they authorized the charges over the phone . Not to say everyone is like that, but he does run a business , and as a smart business person, he's doing the right thing to protect himself from anyone trying dispute charges after they authorized them . So the imprinted credit card on file is to be use whenever there is an outstanding balance and you authorized them to make the charge to your credit card . They will not charge your credit card without your authorization. We had no problem with his office doing so and had no problem with it. Matter fact , there are many other doctor offices, including my own business as for imprint of credit cards for any future charges. That just save you a trip to their office to sign the actual sale draft, that's all . Yes, maybe the front person should explain why it's being done so all his patients understand , but again if you don't understand why then ask. Wow, that was a long review, I usually don't write review unless I felt it's needed because We had a different experiences then those reviews I read. I went in for my new patient blood draw and asked him about some recent blood test results from my obgyn. He didn't agree with her recommendation so I'm waiting for my obgyn to respond but he was quite calm, patient, pleasant and informative through the whole thing. I don't know why people keep complaining about how rude he is. He laughs at jokes and asks questions like a normal friendly person. The facial hair does make him look a little evil though. I also think it's pretty neat that he takes the time to respond to people's complaints on yelp so extra star for that. read more

I think Dr. Chiu offers good service. However, if you decide to go to his office, be VERY careful about what they bill you for and ask a lot of clarifications before leaving the office. I went for my yearly preventative examination, which should be fairly standard. A couple of weeks later, there was a claim through my insurance for an Office Visit, which costs about $50. My insurance covers preventative 100%. When I called their office about this, the front desk told me "I can go directly to LabCorp to get tested without going through the doctor's office". Well, sure, I suppose that is possible, but I am not an expert. I did not appreciate that explanation and not getting any indication that my visit was anything but a preventative, yearly checkup. Therefore, I've decided to try another a doctor, even though I've been to Dr. Chiu in the past. The claim isn't alot, so it's not a big deal. However, for me, its about transparency. Lesson learned for me, make sure I do my homework on what is "preventative" and always ask questions about payment and billing before I leave the office. read more

It's been 3 years and I am very happy with Dr. Chiu. He has taking care of my health very professionally and friendly. Unlike some doctors I've visited in the past, he allocates long and quality time for my visits. I never felt he is in hurry to finish seeing me and move to the next patient. If you ever felt pressured before or not treated as much as you paid, meet Dr. Chiu. You will feel - he sticks with the quality standards to take care of his patients. I read a lot of feedbacks at Yelp are about disputes over the medical bills. I never had any issue with my bills which were very consistent per visits, health checks and other treatments I received. If you feel something is wrong with your bill, discuss with Dr. Chiu's office first. And remember that the final bill is always decided by your insurance provider. read more

My husband and I had the worst experience ever doing physical checkups in Dr Chiu's office. I was getting a blood draw. The nurse tried twice and couldn't find my vein. She called Dr Chiu. Dr Chiu seemed unhappy and told the nurse to watch. He made two shots again. He said he found the vein and started drawing the blood. It hurt so badly and I had to call for a stop after the first tube of blood was drawn. The entire process took about 40 minutes. The nurse was young and pretty, with no smile on her face for the entire 40 minutes, she said 2 or 3 times that it was hard to find my veins because they were too tiny! I had plenty of experiences doing blood draws and it was never like this!!! I got a big bruise on my arm that night and it got worse the next day. It hurt so much that I could not sleep for two nights. I felt my heart was beating faster than normal and it was just very uncomfortable. I called in the office after 2 days and went to see Dr Chiu again. He did a couple of check ups and said I was fine, and I should just take some pain medications. He was polite, but it was clear to me that he didn't care. Neither the nurse or the doctor said a single word of 'sorry' to me. And the story wasn't over. I got a bill for about $200 for the check up I received because of the pain caused by the blood draw. I was too tired to argue with them. I just paid off the bill and an additional $20 to get my medical records transferred out. I never want to deal with them again! This was an incredibly horrible experience! If I could give negative star ratings I would!!! My husband did the blood draw the same day as me and got a big bruise as well. He said it hurt badly but he was tougher than I and didn't groan all night like I did. He agreed with me that the doctor didn't care about us. I would not comment about his professional skills, but his attitude was certainly cold and uncaring. There is certainly a good side in this experience: Life seems much more beautiful after I recovered! I'm truly thankful that I never need to deal with them again! My husband and I switched to Palo Alto Medical Foundation afterwards and it made a world of difference!!! read more

Considering Dr. Chiu is a doctor and not a customer service representative, I think he is a good doctor. he doesn't mince words, that's for sure, but he is honest with his assessment and helpful in what I need to do / think about in taking next steps. I don't go to a doctor to get my ego massaged or pampered like I would expect when going to a hotel or restaurant. I go to a doctor because I need an honest and thorough assessment to my health. And that is what I got from Dr. Chiu. A bonus is that Dr. Chiu has a high interest in sports medicine, and is the team doctor for the San Jose Sharks. I had a soccer-related injury, and he was able to correctly diagnose the problem, which I was very happy about. The facilities are small, but clean and have plenty of magazines for the waiting room. It's somewhat children freindly with toys and books for them as well. Also, their front office staff are friendly and helpful. So, if you're looking for a family physician I would recommend visiting Dr. Chiu. read more

I've been going to Dr. Chiu for about 5 years now. There are a couple of things I really like about him, most importantly he actually listens to me. I've been to many doctors that barely listen to you, then just hand you a perscription and walk out after spending 45 seconds with you. From that standpoint, he is the best Dr. I've ever been to. Dr. Chiu takes plenty of time to understand what your issues are, and asks good questions, he is very thorough. Another thing I really like is that he is always on time, when they say your appointment is at 11am, you are in the examinaing room at 11am. It REALLY irks me when Dr.'s make me wait 30-45 minutes to finally see me. I've been sitting inside exam aning rooms for 30 mins wondering if they forgot about me. My time is important too. I've never had to wait long at his office. Like others have said, his staff is friendly and professional and the office is nice FWIW. I understand what people are saying about his bedside manner, he's pretty matter-of-fact and to the point and , but so what? I'm not there to have tea with him, I'm there to get my problems solved, and he is good at that. read more

Dr. Chiu has provided my family with exceptional care for over 5 years now. I moved to Dublin several years ago, where I now reside and work. I gladly commute the 2 hours to remain under his care, he's that good. My first experience with Dr. Chiu was back in 2010 when he diagnosed my son's appendicitis on the spot. My son Josh, 16 at the time, is athletic and doesn't like to complain, was experiencing what he described as a 'stomach ache' for a few days prior to our visit. Dr. Chiu prescribed a scan. My reaction was, "What, are you kidding, isn't that extreme and expensive for a stomach ache?" He replied frankly, "No, I think your son has appendicitis, in fact, I want you to stay at the hospital for the results, you're son may be having surgery this afternoon". Needless to say, Josh had surgery that afternoon. Several years ago, I had complications from some minor surgery. Dr. Chiu immediately took my phone call and told me what to do. He's always responsive to my family's needs. And he cares, always asking about my college kids. When I bring up some of their issues, he replies, "They can always call me." Another aspect I really appreciate is that he has a small office and will always make time for you when necessary. Nothing like going into Kaiser, where... if you're not sick when you walked in, you very well may be when you leave. In reading some of the other Yelp reviews, they're just not fair. Understand that (a) Dr. Chiu has a serious and 'frank' demeanor. He tells you like it is, without much emotion. If you want someone to baby you or a cheerleader, call your mother. If you want quality medical care, I highly recommend Dr. Chiu. (b) Doctors can't spend $100 worth of their time hassling with insurance companies for the pittance they give to Primary Care Physicians. Forget your insurance, his Direct Primary Care plan is a phenomenal value. His goals, described on his website are: "I strive to be the best physician I can be. I consider my medical practice a profession rather than a business entity. I am a physician who helps my patients, not a "provider" who works on "consumers". I practice the art of medicine according to a high moral code. I honor the trust that my patients give me and use my medical skills and knowledge to the best of my ability to improve their health." I was just out of college and working full time when I got a bad cold---bronchitis? It was a loooong time ago. I am so upset with the receptionist, her name is Barbie? I called this morning to make an appointment for my husband, since my husband is a new patient, she asked me to fill out all these new patient forms including our credit card information before we could make an appointment which I don't understand. However, I did, after that I called back again to make sure she got all the information so that I could make the appointment, but she refused and said that my husband should call them directly to make the appointment. Like I said, my husband asked me to make the appointment for him. What is the problem? Why it is so hard to make the appointment? I don't understand? And I am also shocked that Barbie just hanged off the phone while I am still talking. How could she being so rude? Not a qualified receptionist at all. Great family / personal doctor. Dr. Chiu has been my doctor for over twenty years. I keep coming back because he is good, thorough, efficient and available when needed. He runs a private practice which seems to allow hime to spend as much time as needed with patients. On a couple of occasions he has taken the time to call me on my cell phone to discuss my health issues. Dr. Chiu cares about the overall health and well being of his patients. And, as one reviewer said, he does not mince words. He has been clear and direct when I need to hear strong messages about my medical care, health and lifestyle improvements. I have never encountered any of the negative issues with the front office mentioned by a couple of reviewers. Because he runs a small private practice his staff does ask for a credit card upfront, but they only charge you for whatever your insurance does not cover. read more

It originally was something along the lines of "We should discuss this." Now it's, as with all subsequent negative review responses, an attempt to turn it around on the patient. Look Dr. Chiu, I have some tough news for you. I gave you feedback in 2007 that your manner gets in the way of your expertise. It looks like you've had 10 years of that feedback and you choose to argue with people on the internet (and in some cases violate HIPAA privacy laws by revealing their treatments) instead of addressing the root cause. Every one of these circumstances could be avoided by your customer service, the expectations you set for your patients, and the sense of understanding and thoughtfulness you leave them with. There are thousands of good doctors in the bay area and it is a shame that you still seem to believe leaving people feeling bad about their visit is an effective way to build your reputation. Dr Chiu may be a very good doctor, but I will not be able to find out anytime soon. Basically what happened is that the receptionist told me I have to sign an agreement to leave my credit card on file, which gives them the right to charge. Being on a high deductible plan, this is important to me, so I asked the front desk if they can inform me that if there is any additional charge on top of the office visit to please let me know ahead of time. The responses I got were "well we cant tell you how much", "I told you over the phone", and "we are not the doctor". Overall, a wasted trip and bad experience. read more

I am quite disappointed today with Dr Chu and his staff. I am a regular patient of Dr Manjul Patwardhan and Dr Chu is covering her during her vacation. Hence I had to go to Dr Chu for my son. My son was complaining about ear blockage. Dr Chu checked and suggested that his right ear need to be cleaned. And he asked his assistant to set up the cleaning machine and started cleaning. Half way through when my son complained of discomfort, Dr Chu mentioned the ear wax is hard and is also close to the ear drum (hence the discomfort is understandable), asked us to use ear drops to soften the ear wax and comeback after 4 days to complete the rest of the procedure. When we went for the follow up appointment is when we faced the surprising argument. We were told that the ear cleaning procedure will be charged separately (not part of the office visit). And, as my insurance covered only part of the cost, I need to pay for the rest of the amount. This is in addition to my office-visit co-pay. I was surprised and asked them how come they did not tell me that the procedure will be charged separately and not covered in the office-visit co-pay? One of the staff members (may be the office manager) mentioned that she was not in office that day and hence did not know. And the other staff member who was present on the first day, was just listening and not responding. The story becomes even more interesting. As I had come for a second appointment to continue with the SAME ear cleaning job, they will charge me again for an equal amount. In other words, I would pay twice and the insurance would pay twice for the same procedure. During my entire discussion with the office staff, Dr Chu did not come out to talk with us (I saw him walking in the corridor) though the office manager went in to consult with Dr Chu on our discussion. Summary: I am unhappy that (1) I was not told the ear-cleaning procedure will be charged separately and (2) I was not told that I have to pay twice for the same procedure just because we could not complete the procedure during the first appointment. read more

My family has been his patient for 3 years. Last visit for flu shot for whole family and Tdap shot for kids was not good. The scheduling was something wrong. I took more than one hour, waiting waiting and waiting like a huge hospital. In addition, They forgot to make shot records of Tdap. That make me another almost one hour driving. I used to go here for my annual exams, but haven't gone for a number of years. The reason I stopped going was because I felt the impression that the doctor was not very attentive to my needs, and much more interested in selling me drugs. My drug test came back with tri-glycerides level on the borderline. It was still normal but at the end of being normal. Anyway, first thing he suggested was to put me on medication. From what I know, if you're on medication, you're on it for life. I was still in mid 30s; so, wasn't interested in starting a lifelong drug dependency. Anyway, it happened again the following year. From these two experiences, I thought he may be getting some kickback from drug company or something, since he was eager to promote the drug without even hinting this might be long-term thing. Went to Dr. John first for allergy issue and later schedule a annual physical. As other reviewers mentioned after the physical I was billed extra's and when asked the office talked about stuff that wasn't covered as part of physical. But transprancy is key, if you are performing anything outside of what the scheduled appointment is for, why not inform the patient that it would incur additional cost. Rather surprising them. And offcourse they had my credit card and file and charged it without a calling and confirming that they are going to charge. read more

I am a patient of Marc Iwahashi and needed to see a dr while Dr. Iwahashi was out. His office referred me to a couple of doctors and I chose Dr. Chiu from the batch. I'm really happy I did. His office appears to be completely organized and the staff is friendly and thorough. The office is also really clean. Dr. Chiu is great. He's just the right balance of personable and professional. He listened without interrupting, was thorough in his exam, asked all the pertinent questions, and came to a sensible diagnosis. I'm THRILLED to have another doctor that I have faith in, besides Dr. Iwahashi (who I think is wonderful, as well). I can't tell you how happy I am to have a good back-up doctor (and if I hadn't already had a great relationship with my current FP, Dr. Chiu would be my primary)! read more

About the example: How nicely Dr Chiu have modified what example I gave while telephone conversation or may be Dr Chiu had not listened to me at first because he was keep yelling at me. What Dr Chiu was saying, asking this amount is US culture. So I said no. If someone go to Walmart and buy something for $300. After 3 months, Walmart will not come to him and say, they made a mistake and forgot to charge $10 and pay or we are going to credit agencies. For something, I have already paid and you missed a minor amount because of your mistake, you should bear. Even if amount is big, accept that, the amount was missed by mistake and explain why you should charge extra, it can not be threatening. 2. My previous review was deleted by Yelp because it was just two lines. Yelp asked to write detail review. So I wrote again in detail. 3. I seriously wonder, why Dr Chiu or his staff talked like that just for $11 (Threatening for collection agency, saying, how do I sleep in night, How i face my children, I am the most inappropriate person). He has defiantly lost me as his patients, but also potential patients whoever will get my review. But I read his other Yelp reviews. Look like most of the reviews are about how he and his staff behave with his patients. 4. For collection agencies, I just needed inform them that this is disputed case and no action will be taken, except to resolve the dispute so I have not paid because of collection agencies. I paid because of maturity, which is defiantly lacking in Dr Chiu (At least in my case). read more

I went in with my wife to see Doctor John today. My wife was having some issues that we wanted to investigate and see if we could find some resolution to. The Doctor came in, didn't introduce himself and got straight to asking why we were there. It kind of makes you feel unwelcome, but I'm a fair man so I reserved judgement. After I let my wife explain her issue the doctor began his examination. He had to do a little palpating and reaching under clothes which is also a bit uncomfortable since we hadn't really exchanged any pleasantries whatsoever. Nothing so much as a warm smile. The Doctor began making his assessment when I had to interject because I felt that my wife had left out some details with her ailment that might be crucial to his assessment. He seemed to take offense to that and tried to play my wife against me by insisting to her that I was insulting her with my observation. All in all I feel that this fellow is arrogant, and I couldn't help but get the impression that he had something against us. If not I don't know if he is just an outright jerk or if he is going through some kind of emotional stress, but I am not too keen on the idea of returning to his office to have any sort of dealings with him. As far as the assessment goes we are both sure that he was dead wrong because he completely blew off the fact that my wife had started to intake garlic and cranberry juice to help her with her issue, which we both feel is helping, but not solving the problem. I won't go into details about my wife's medical history though, and I expect the same from the doctor if he wishes to respond here. read more

Dr. Chiu was my doctor for a while years back when I was going to college. I just looked him up to get his info for an insurance app I'm filling out, and I came upon this review page of him. I want to say that Dr. Chiu totally nailed my issue, which was a kind of slippery one -- anxiety issues. I can see how a couple of the reviewers made comments about his attitude, but it's all about how you interpret it. He's not as cruel as they make him sound... on the contrary I could tell that inside he's extremely caring, as well as being absolutely top notch in skill. It's just that he's not one of those people who are so common these days who go out of their way to tend to your delicate emotions. He tells it like it is and helps you. Absolutely a fine doctor. my husband and i are huge fans of dr. chiu and miss him dearly while we're temporarily located overseas. he calls it like he sees it and while they've run late in the past because dr. chiu or his assistants overran an appointment with another patient, i appreciate how he takes the time for patients - scheduled or emergency. i think he's well worth the wait. we've never had billing or insurance problems. his team is highly communicative so there's never a surprise. dr. chiu's sense of humor, or lack thereof, is a little different so it took a few visits to warm up and crack a smile from him. he's super professional, extremely knowledgeable and very patient to understand the issue. read more

Professional, friendly, knowledgeable and straightforward, Dr. Chiu is the perfect primary care physician for me. I have a permanent disability, one that needs fairly comprehensive general care, and Dr. Chiu immediately provided me with referrals to specialists who accept my current insurance and who can address my specific needs. I'm a brand new patient yet I was able to meet with him for a general physical almost immediately. As others have said, he was thorough, honest and informative as he assessed my general health and took time to get to know me and to answer all the questions I had. Unfortunately I've always happened to go to second rate doctors after randomly choosing a random one from my "in network" list. Fortunately, I learned of Dr. Chui from my wife and her cousin and I'm thankful to finally have a great doctor. There are many reasons why but the first thing I noticed was how thorough he is and not just churning patients. This is my first time ever yelping, but I think Dr. Chiu deserves to be written about in only positive words. My husband, my children and I have been patients of Dr. Chiu for about 20 years. Dr. Chiu is very professional, very smart, and quite frankly knows how to do more than he is supposed to. (He can do many procedures that other doctors would refer their patients to a specialist for). I deeply admire his skills - so far he hasn't been wrong even once. If we are ever referred to specialist, it means we really must see one. Yes, sometimes you have to wait longer than expected when in the office, and yes, sometimes the personnel are not helpful with insurance info, but at the end of the day its the patient's responsibility to know the coverage. When we went on insurance in the past that wasn't accepted at Dr. Chiu's office, we had to go see another doctor and it was an awful experience. We bring our parents who are covered by a different insurance to a different doctor, but we always come to Dr. Chiu for a second opinion. Dr. Chiu helped my friend who is visiting and got sick, and was able to help without sending her to a specialist, following up with no charge. He also helped my mom who didn't have insurance at the time. She had hyper-functional thyroid. My family has been seeing Dr. Chiu for over 10 years. Mom, dad, brother and sister have been seeing Dr. Chiu regularly. I would recommend Dr. Chiu if you're looking for consistent and good medical care. Dr. Chiu is matter-of-fact and pulls no punches. Dr. Chiu and his staff is very helpful when I need to fill prescriptions over the phone (and now the internet). The staff is friendly and helpful. Dr. Chiu is also friendly and very professional. After all these years, he still calls me by formal first name. I wouldn't hesitate to call him if I needed medical attention. He's seen me through the serious issues like hypertension and other issues like high cholesteral. He's also advised me about my stiff shoulder and gave me an option of cortizone shots, pills or more exercise. I took the exercise route and my shoulder has not hurt or became sore since. He took care of my first episode of gout. Through his advise, I eat less meat protein, drank more water, and resolved my gout issue. He's advised me about my knee when I'm playing softball in my 50's. It reminds me about the joke: Doctor, it hurts when I do "that". Doctor responds: well don't do "that". I know I need to lose weight and Dr. Chiu does not hesitate to tell me what the rewards would be . . . no more pills, solves the hypertension issue etc. Dr. Chiu gives the patients options. I have been going to Dr. Chiu for many years now. Awhile ago, when I moved, I switched to a very popular doctor near my new house. That doctor was very personable. However, he couldn't solve my issues or prescribed older generation antiobiotics and I found myself going back to Dr. Chiu for a second opinion, and what turned out to be the resolution. I now use Dr. Chiu exclusively, even though I have to drive a bit. If you want a doctor that is all smiles and idle conversation, then Dr. Chiu may not be the one for you. If you want someone who will fix your issue and is up on the latest technology, then Dr. Chiu is hands down an excellent choice. As for his office staff, I have never found them to be rude! I have been seeing Dr. Chiu since the end of 2007, and I like his professionalism. He does not try to spend time on niceties, but he is polite and courteous. Although Dr. Chiu does not smile often, as some people noted in reviews, I think he does care about his patients' well being. Case in point: I remember very well that he broke into a big smile when he noticed I was finally doing an excellent job controlling my weight and started asking how I managed it. There is another thing I appreciate about Dr. Chiu. Every time I get a medical/health question, he always has an answer and a prop (ex. a model, a poster, or a print-out for take-home) and explains it really clearly - and patiently. read more

He may very well know his stuff, but he is so unfriendly it makes for an unpleasant experience. I felt rushed and felt like he did not care. Being a doctor used to mean you liked working with and helping people. It did not feel like that in this office. read more

Dr. Chiu is a very good doctor. He is very knowledgeable. He is very patient with me when I did my annual check and did most of the detailed check up I ever got. He spent long time to ask me my health history and family health history and explained to me a lot of information. I asked him many questions and he was always patient to answer in detail. You can also get your blood drown on site in his office so you don't need to go to the lab. You do need to visit his office for twice for the check up since the first appointment was just to understand what your blood test need to be done based on your health history and situation. I would like to review his clinic as a 5 start but the only problem is his staff didn't file the code for insurance to lab and my claim was declined because of that. I have to call the insurance company to get it done. read more
