WOW! What a difference from a previous eye doctor I had been seeing the last few years! I had been seeing Dr Wolstan ... a super-big, super-busy office with a long, long waiting line of patients every time I went there... But the last time I went to Dr Wolstan ... the "non personal" ... cursory ... superficial ... '5 minutes' ... that he gave me was the END of my being his patient ... I rant OUT of "patience"! Voila and bon jour! ... to Dr John Maher, MD that I found here on YELP... At first glance I was very impressed with his nearly '5 STAR' rating (Dr Wolstan has only 3.5 stars). So I called Dr Maher's office. Very friendly receptionist (Rose Marie) who answered all of my questions and booked my appointment easily for the next week. (Dr Wolstan has at least a 6 week waiting period!) I arrived on time at Dr Maher's office. Just what I was hoping for! A small office with a very 'personal touch' for his patients. His office is clean, modern and his assitant, Therase was wonderful! I was especially impressed with Dr Maher. Very amiable... warm... caring... Let me explain how... 1. He noticed that one of my eyelids was drooping and asked me about that. I told him I've had that condition forever. Well, being the great doctor that he is... He asked to see my driver's license photo. He then took out a small magnifying glass to closely examine my 'eyes' on the driver's licnese photo to confirm that I did, indeed, have this 'droopy eyelid' for many years! (So 'no problem' indicated.) Now THAT is what I call a thorough and caring start to my exam! 2. Next, he personally applies the eye drops (not the nurse). That's pretty amazing considering that when you go on any doctor's appointment these days -- the physician does as little of the 'manual labor' as possible. 3. After he gave me a thorough... thorough ... eye exam (I'm almost 71 years old, white male) ... I was happy to hear that I still do NOT need glasses! (20 - 40 vision). 4. Now here's something Dr Wolstan NEVER did and he's touted as being one of the areas best eye doctors.... Dr Maher has two medical devices to check your eyes ... The first one is to test your peripheral vision (I think that's used to diagnose glaucoma). And the second device actually takes a photo of each eye. Dr Maher said I got ann A- in my results! I'd like to give Dr Maher and his staff a '10' -- but YELP only allows me '5 stars. read more

I appreciate Dr. Maher so much for fixing my eye! One day, I developed an insane chalazion on my eye that made me look like a monster. It got so bad that it ruptured open from the front-- what a nightmare. I have a friend who works in optometry and she said it was the worst she's ever seen. Thankfully I was able to get in with Dr. Maher and, unlike other places, he didn't hesitate to remove it surgically. Of course it was uncomfortable and scary, but he made it as painless as possible. Yes, his sense of humor is dry, so if you're very delicate, his bedside manner may not be for you... I found it fun. The only kind of annoying thing is that you can only pay by check or cash, but I found the front desk people very accommodating! read more

Dr Maher certainly has experience. But when I asked him to explain Lazer Lensx surgery.. He responded to look it up on the internet. His staff was not polite and their communication was poor. Both my parents had cataract surgery with Dr. Maher, he is always on time for appointments and very thorough in his examinations and explaining what needs to be done. Upon returning home from mom's second cataract surgery she noticed the roses blooming by her front door, "Look we have roses", the thing is the roses had been blooming for weeks and she could finally see them from a distance. I had a serious full body virus that also infected my eyes. Dr Maher and his team were AWESOME. I was in pain, sore, feverish they checked out my eyes and said the virus was in my eyes. Dr Maher said don't worry, and gave me a prescription for special eye drops and within 4 days my eyes were back to normal. Before, my eyes stuck together, hurt and my vision was blurry. Several years ago, I started getting double vision. I went to an urgent care, several GPs, and an optometrist. I was told it was everything from "stress" to a brain tumor. Luckily, I went to Dr. Maher and he diagnosed me with myasthenia gravis, which was confirmed by several blood tests. My vision is so much better now and I am very grateful I saw him. Dr Maher did my cataract surgery yesterday. I went to see my optometrist who recommended a surgeon several years ago. I saw that surgeon who said I didn't need the surgery. I went back to see the optometrist, who is great by the way, and he suggested Dr Maher. The office might be old fashioned, but the staff is nice, the wait is short, and that is a rarity for a specialist. The surgicenter wait and Dr Maher's schedule was very busy so my surgery was scheduled almost three months after the initial consultation. I've never experienced a dr who researched my eye issues after hours and called with various solutions. Most doctors are on the clock and Maher is the exception. Dr. Maher would NOT be my first choice. His fees are exorbitant, way beyond what is customary, causing out-of-pocket charges to be very high. Fees were NOT disclosed at time service and treatment was done and charged, and additional procedures were done without additional disclosure. I have been a patient of his for a number of years. I got a major infection in my rt. eye (Vegas, dirty fingers, tried to remove contact, couldn't) and he saved that eye . It was so infected that the pupil and iris of that eye were a solid sheet of white. . He is so dedicated that I had to fax him a drawing of what the eye looked like that day, plus an office visit every other day. As if that wasn't enough ... one of the scheduled visits was to take place on Christmas Day and he volunteered to come in anyhow. Knowing he and his wife had little kids, I was blown away and of course, declined. That is patient dedication if ever there was. The eye healed just fine and has been fine ever since. He is a "teaching doctor" - if you ask him about your treatment, he is quick to explain it to you and in terms we can all understand. Not a bunch of medical gobble-de-gook only another doctor could understand. He is friendly, affable and has a great sense of humor as well. I recommend him AND his services wholeheartedly. read more

This is a depressing Office with a very rude staff. This is NOT a a place to go if you wish to be treated like a human being. The staff was unfriendly and argumentative about my insurance info. Two of them actually tagged teamed me with curt comments and when I did not provide the answer they wanted, (because I truly did not have the answer) they were sarcastic and curt.After waiting 3 and a half weeks to get an appointment, I felt compelled to go in because of my suspect diagnosis. however because of the rude treatment I asked for my papers back and left. I am so glad I did. I later have seen a very Very excellent dr. I actually had a gut feeling about this whole appointment when I saw the condition of the place and then the sour, personalities of the staff. I first heard about Dr Maher from a friend. He is so awesome! I had a chalazion (stye) and I had gone to another doctor and he gave me some drops. These didn't help and the stye grew bigger and bigger until it was extremely painful and I couldn't sleep at night. I went to see Dr Maher and he came in after hours due to my work schedule and was incredibly accommodating. He removed the stye and it was a painless procedure. He is extremely affordable for a cash patient but also takes PPO insurance. I wouldn't recommend any other doctor but Dr Maher!! read more

Did my sister's cataract surgery. Since she has a disability she has the maturity of a child so I was really afraid how she would react to this type of surgery. IV's scare me to death and my sister's tends to be very hard to do. The surgery center we went to did a freeze spray and the IV went in with a lot less pain and excitement for her. After the surgery she did not complain much about pain. The eye has had eye drops for 2 weeks and is doing very well and she is doing very well. She has good vision in the eye and did not find the experience traumatic. Dr. Maher is very calming, caring, and listens. He took the time to listen to my sister talk about some other important to her issue and I told her not to take up the doctor's time. Dr Maher was very nice about it. The staff is very good too. The wait time isn't bad either. Would use him again. He did a nice job. read more

I am so thankful I met Dr. Maher this morning. I was in Torrance, a long distance from home visiting my daughter. I experienced floaters and flashing light for the first time the night before. Worried and not knowing what to do, I searched for an ophthalmologist that would be able to see me since I was on the way to San Diego. I called his office and they told me to come right in. We didn't wait over 5 minutes to be seen. I have been to numerous of eye specialist over my life but I will say Dr. Maher was the kindest, caring eye care doctor I have ever met. He spent at least 20 minutes with me performing many test to dignose my problem. He had a funny sense of humor. This doctor was referred to my family for his skills with no explanation as to how difficult and unpleasant the office would be. This place is like something out of the 1950s. Two hour wait for a postop check. A patient asks the front office person how much longer the wait would be and was told, "You are as lost as I am. I have no idea." Patient asks, well can you find out? The answer was, "No. The doctor is very busy." After the initial consultation we asked to set up the appointment for surgery but was told that someone would call us. Really? We are there and you won't give us an appointment? The doctor himself lacks people skills, says things that only he thinks are funny, and speaks above the level of average folks who need technical concepts explained to us. My family member wanted to get the cataract surgery done ASAP and chose not to get a second opinion. I would not let this doctor work on me. I was referred to Dr Maher by my optometrist for a worsening cataract. I called his office and was able to set up an appointment right away and go in to see him a few days later. After examination, he discussed my options for cataract surgery and made a recommendation for the type of lens and vision correction. I felt very confident in his knowledge and skills, and more importantly he made me feel at ease with having the surgery done. He answered all questions to my satisfaction in a clear and intelligent manner. His office scheduled the surgery and helped me navigate through the insurance constraints that I have in a manner that minimized my out of pocket cost. The cataract surgery he performed was phenomenal: painless, quick, easy recovery, and highly successful. The staff at the surgery center were also amazing. I can see how some people may mistake the efficiency with which Dr Maher operates for being rushed and his sense of intellect and sophistication may go over some folks heads. I personally very much appreciated that in him. Bottom line, Dr Maher is an excellent ophthalmologist and surgeon and when the time comes I will entrust my other eye to his skilled hands. read more
