The cashier is on the main floor with escalators taking you to the basement or the 2nd floor. It's set up like most B & N's where everything is broken up into sections with very clear signage. I still love having copies of physical books once in a while.

However; the reason why I'm writing this update is because there are some changes at the store. Firstly; the large "Information Desk" at the rear of the first floor is no longer there. Instead, there's a small one on the right side of that floor (and it's almost hidden). Secondly; the huge first floor display of beautiful photo books of NYC and environs is now much smaller (although it seemed like there were more of them on the lower level than previously). There's also another change; the restrooms are now only accessible with a code, and a code can only be obtained via a receipt - so if you don't buy anything, you can't use the restroom (I ordered some books online later, since I didn't want to lug them home from the store). Further; employees don't have access to a bathroom code (obviously they have some other way to access the restrooms). I was there for a few hours - and if it wasn't for the fact that I had a dental appointment nearby afterwards, it would have been problematic. Having said that, I do realize that the restroom situation is an issue; at the Union Square store in particular, there used to be a big problem with homeless people and undoubtedly a corporate decision was made. I'm still keeping a five-star rating because of the employees and because the store has a great selection.

I bought some scores, some sheet music and music books for him. The staff were helpful and dug one book up for me that I couldn't find myself. Thank you!

In the end, it would have been faster to order it myself online. More recently, I tried to exchange a gift I received, a biography (not a musical score), that I already owned. I simply wanted to exchange the biography, which was clearly unread, for a different one that was actually more expensive. I was happy to pay the difference. I even had the physical receipt. Both were full-price books, not discounted items. The exchange was declined under their umbrella policy. I understand having a policy in place to protect publishers, but it would be clearer to simply state "All Sales Final on Printed Materials." Instead, the language references "copyrighted materials," which suggests there may be exceptions, when in practice there are not. I want to support a neighborhood brick and mortar music shop. But when selection is limited, flexibility is minimal, and communication is inconsistent, it becomes difficult to justify staying loyal. I am disappointed to say, that I will likely purchase my scores and books elsewhere going forward. At times, the store feels oriented more toward internal or institutional purchases than toward the musicians and readers who live in the neighborhood.

there is a reason this cafe/wine bar tops every "best places to work remote from" list I've found…read more - this the most gorgeous bookstore and cafe that slowly turns into a wine bar. the walls are covered in beautiful books with sections for weird female protagonists and banned books. large couches, tables, spinning plushy chairs, truly a range of seating options until 4pm when it turns over for dinner service (beware 90 min wifi limit!!) - the coffee is reasonably priced ($5 americano with almond milk) and the service is very fast at the counter. the food menu is minimal until dinner, so I went with the one sandwich option with meat. - the prosciutto Gruyère was delicious. the bread has a crispy crunch while the inside had the perfect amount of butter to soften the inside further. cheese was sharp and meat was salty, a classic combination done well. - I loved it here and will certainly come back when I have hotspot data or downloaded materials to work on after the 90 min wifi limit
