I think about food, ingredients and spices a lot and when I travel, I like to experience and take a little something home as a souvenir. So I came to John Lewis & Partners after a friend recommended the grocery portion as a good place to find spices. I've traveled to several countries and states where I pick up spices to use in my recipes, this means a lot more to me than some novelty t-shirt or magnet. I purchased a wide selection of spices, some which I have never tried using before. As you can see in my picture, I got quite the haul and paid around $30 euros for it all. I CHALLENGE JOHN LEWIS TO PROVIDE THE PROOF THEY SAY THEY HAVE ON VIDEO SHOWING MY CLAIM YOU STOLE £160 OF MY MONEY. I was new to them at Solihull but approached by a man i now believe was head of security. He took control as the shop was shutting demand a further £200 when i can only assume my autism and unsteady state while i was suffering a minor stroke had him see an opportunity to steal. The shop was in darkness the cashier at a distance and stated events were manufactured. I was still clear in my head but unable to respond and the salesman is said to have been on holiday over 8 weeks. The head of security of that floor seemed familiar but the video would prove it weas him. JOHN LEWIS refused to show me the video or a copy but the video would show my state of health having to sit while i was being robbed. The police were offered as an alternative knowing they cannot interfere in a civil case further confirming the abuse is a regular occurrence on these premises. John Lewis online are as good as useless. I have ME and am also a full time carer to our daughters who have additional needs. I was lucky (well I thought it was lucky at the time) enough to get a gift voucher for Christmas and eventually decided that I'd buy this Meaco air circulator as I have lymphoedema and hot weather makes me even more poorly. John Lewis however allowed it to be sent with click and collect to a store that wouldn't accept parcels that size. Eventually after three phone calls and a few days and a load of bluff from their customer service team, they agree to send another one out (as the original is on its way back to them )but next day delivery to my home. Ok.... I stay in the next day to ensure I'm here. Nothing. Saturday comes and goes. Monday comes, DPD tracking says it hasn't even left JL. JL customer service (4th call) say it has and should be with me tomorrow (now today!) No change in status this morning and then I receive an email telling me my refund will be processed in the next 5 days. What refund??? I didn't ask for a refund nor did I want one. For a company that say they'll let you know if there is any problem, to say that this is a lie, would be an understatement to say the least. I've had no communication at all about any of this delivery. As it happens, their refund will take up to five days and yet I'm supposed to pay for a new one from my bank account (which won't cover it as my pittance of a carer's allowance as I'm low until next payment.) Yet that apparently is my problem, not theirs! How can that be? I didn't pay using my account, nor did I ask for a refund?! So I can't get the item that I desperately need, because of their systems. How is that right? I got offered a £20 refund or 10% off; that still wont be enough to enable me to buy it and not go into overdraft. Why am I paying for their mess up? The most appalling customer service I have ever received. It's not even close. John Lewis delivered & installed a washing machine that flooded and damaged my property & the property below. John Lewis have failed to take any responsibility. MONTHS later I still have a non-working washing machine, water-logged floor, and no compensation or action from JL. UPDATE: All "enquiries" have been carried out and John Lewis has still not taken responsibility. They are the sorriest excuse for a company. Pathetic and dishonest. Thrice attempted to purchase a wedding gift from a John Lewis registry. I live in USA. Couple lives in UK. John Lewis refused my credit cards twice, then voided my PayPal order although it went through. I may have made some sort of ordering error but, having purchased wedding gifts via registries before, I have to say that John Lewis's registry was unnecessarily opaque and unhelpful. Why not permit me to fund the gift? Via the wedding registry John Lewis must have recipients' address, etc. on record and could and should contact them? Again if I erred in making the order, they made it very easy for me to do so. The customer support person found out that my order had been "voided," but made no effort not offer to help me purchase the wedding gift again--that would have been the right thing to do. Really awful experience. My blind was ordered and payment taken, they then ran out of fabric & made a mistake by typing my email wrongly to me to tell me the order was cancelled but I didn't get the email because of their error - they then kept my money for months & didn't bother to call/text or send a letter to me so I had no idea the order wasn't started. After 3 months I called to enquire about install date & they said no order was taken! To make matters worse they took order again & I still had to wait another 3 months for install - they installed the blind wrong & installer said he only has "20 minutes parking" because he was too cheap to pay for parking at a meter so he rushed the job & didn't discuss install requirements with me. They offered me an insulting "good will" of £100 for a blind that cost approx £340 Avoid this company if you can, they're too big to care or correct their multiple pattern of mistakes in a suitable way. Standards there have really dropped - AVOID AT ALL COSTS John Lewis reply to complaints with empty meaningless "we always "try" to put things right but they clearly don't try hard enough to give a satisfactory solution, make stingy offers as "good will", failing to take into account the huge financial loss, inconvenience and time wasted which could have all been avoided had they not mismanaged taking and processing orders. John Lewis kind of reminded me of JC Penny or Sears, the apparel was dated and the prices were more reasonable, I felt the products were packed in and crowded in places, and they sold a variety of things from clothing, to patio furniture, to children's toys. Upon first glance I was not impressed. However, I LOVED the children's area because they've created their own brand of kids toys that I imagine you can't find anywhere else, and they have a huge selection of toys and clothes. -1 star because the quality of the wooden bus was not great (made in China and splintering slightly), but overall 4 solid stars for a large, fun, reasonably-priced department store with lots of fun things to look at. read more

My lesson learnt: Buy your baby products direct from the supplier DO NOT BOTHER GOING VIA JOHN LEWIS FOR ANYTHING BABY RELATED. It adds massive inconvenience to the process if the product you are sold is faulty and John Lewis offer nothing in terms of customer service, protection or goodwill. I am a loyal JL customer. I bought everything from pram down to muslins from John Lewis and have been treated appallingly in return. I was sold a faulty car seat (the car seat was jammed in the isofix base) and only discovered the fault past the 30 days grace period. Given most new parents buy baby products in advance of the birth, it's completely reasonable to expect they won't discover product faults straight away. Rather than apologising and offering a replacement car seat, JL have subjected me to a lengthy process which will involve the car seat being sent off for investigation and maybe repair for up to 2 weeks (7-10 working days) Only then MIGHT I qualify for a replacement. When I explained to the customer service team that being without a car seat for 2 weeks, maybe more was not an option for me and could they lend me one in the meantime, they told me there was nothing they would do about it. 2 weeks with no car seat as a new mum. Aside from not being able to get anywhere day to day, I will miss Easter holidays, my nieces 1st birthday and won't have a safe car seat to take on my holiday abroad leaving me to use hire car ones. When I complained to JL and asked for my case to be escalated, the assistant parroted the consumer rights act and told me she was the highest point of escalation in the whole of John Lewis. What about customer service? The fact this product is a car seat and is required to safely get around? Does John Lewis not care about new parents? I have contacted citizens advice and they are passing my case onto Trading Standards from a child safety angle for investigation. All I want to rectify this situation is to be treated with compassion by JL and offered a replacement car seat that works. read more

John Lewis on Oxford Street is one of 48 branches the department store chain has in England, Scotland and Wales and of course the flagship and largest of those stores, to the point where even the bags have the distinctive "Oxford Street" branding on alongside the John Lewis logo. The store its-self is huge with 6 floors, and a "Place to eat" cafe on the sixth, it is so big in fact it even has its own mini Apple store, which showcases some of Apple's latest products available for purchase here, it basically is your typical Apple store without the accessories or Genius Bar in a much smaller space, but this is still pretty cool for a Department Store. The store did seem quite modern, of course being in a good location on Oxford Street within walking distance of other big-brand department stores such as Marks and Spencer, Selfridges and House of Fraser. I found the selection here to be well above average for a John Lewis store, and was quite impressed with the technology range, and they even had charging boxes where you could charge your phone for free for half an hour. The Food Hall was a little strange, branded as John Lewis Food Hall by Waitrose, it didn't feel like a regular Waitrose store, and the layout wasn't thought out as well as it could have been, it was originally hard to find it, having to go in and out of lifts so this should have been made much clearer. The "Place to eat" cafe wasn't as modern as the one in other stores such as Leeds, which is a shame considering this is supposed to be a flagship John Lewis store, it actually just felt like a big, busy mess. Overall, this is a nice branch of John Lewis and one of London's many fantastic department stores, and I feel it deserves a four-star rating however some big issues which needs addressing is the whole feel and access of the Food Hall, signposting to make the trip around the store easier through lifts etc, and perhaps addressing issues with the queuing system and overall feel of "Place to eat" which is the cafe/restaurant inside which John Lewis run. read more

I get very frustrated whenever I go into this antiquated department store. In a city that is a majority of foreigners-either working or visiting-this business' customer service is directed to non-foreigners. If you are not a UK citizen, with a UK cell phone, you can't even have a John Lewis reward card for your purchases. Yet, they bombard you with emails but you can only get off the mailing list by changing your account preferences. The account can't be changed unless you have a UK cell phone number. You cannot get reward points without the card but they won't mail you a card without a UK address despite having an account. The sales person is too impatient to wait for the customer to download the John Lewis app, despite the fact there is no one else in line or in the sales floor. Customer Service won't give you credit for the purchase unless the card is scanned. By the way, good luck finding a sales associate on the sales floor to help with merchandise. It is just a frustrating experience. There are plenty of other similar retailers on Oxford Street and in London who will respect and cater to customers from around the world. read more

Poor customer service in my opinion. Spent hours on the phone when my new fridge freezer didn't work. Between ordering it and it arriving the prices increased and it also became out of stock. Spoke to them and they didn't know when it would be back in stock. Told them that the manufacturer would take at least a week to come and fix it. Cancelled order and currently awaiting a refund. Had to spend more money and go elsewhere. 48 hours later it's back in stock with John Lewis but my replacement from another company is already here and working. They can't even pick up the broken fridge freezer for a week (it's still here) and can't get a refund till they pick it up. The Call of the Fashion Siren ! It takes a hell of a lot to drag this diva out of her cosy boudoir on a wet and wild Saturday, to head into the centre of town, especially if it happens to be on Oxford Street. But, the call of the fashion siren lured me to John Lewis's Winter Wonderland fashion show on Saturday. What distinguishes JL fashion shows from those of their competitors, is their commitment to making fashion and beauty accessible to all. Instead of the usual flurry of stick thin waifs, slinking down catwalks with lollypop heads and twiglet legs, the show offered the audience an opportunity to see great clothes on real women, who they can actually relate to. The models promenaded along a boulevard of pretty silver Christmas trees, paired with men on the other side of the trees, sporting a variety of winter dandy looks. Pick of the womens outfits were a silver organza pleat dress, a cute faux fur jacket paired with chocolate slacks, accessorised with gold clutch bag and matching shoes. I loved the 50s patterned prom dress, complimented by a black wrap and playfully elegant peeptoe shoes. But I have to admit I had two fashion standouts. First, was a cream, floor-length bias cut evening gown with a beautiful satin pleat detail in the back. Look out for this as a fore-runner to the Gatsby look which is bound to hit stores next year, on the back of the 'Great Gatsby' remake starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Blake Lively. My second fashion standout, was worn by one of my favourite models - Ms Annabel Davis! Ms Davis looking amazing in a gorgeous cobalt blue evening gown, topped off by a cream evening jacket - A fitting model and outfit finale, to another fabulous John Lewis fashion show ! Just one grumble from me about the mens look - Winter Dandy reappears perennially on the male catwalk. What would have been nice to see, was some more practical looks for the male members of the fashion show audience. I've always thought less is more on the make-up and hair wax fronts for male models. The slightly excessive use of which, on several of models, definitely distracted my attention away from some very strong looks. I love this store because they seemingly have everything. I used to live near Macy's, Saks 5th and Bloomingdales in NY, but i don't recall any of them having and electronics dept. where you can buy wide screen TVs & computers, or half a floor of office furniture. And despite stocking everything in the world (apparently), it doesn't seem overwhelming because everything is spread out on multiple floors and around a big, open atrium. Example: swimsuits. I just joined a gym with a pool and it took ages to find a store that sold men's swimwear / bathing suits in London in Jan. All the other major shops on Oxford St., including some sportswear places that make their own lines of swimwear, were out of stock due to "seasonality." Just because it's winter doesn't mean people can't swim... or go on vacation to somewhere warm. I probably visited a dozen major places with no luck. At John Lewis, however, they had a small corner of an upstairs floor with a small rack that had everything I needed... flip flops, racing goggles, a swimsuit. 2 hours later I was in the water, pretending I was Michael Phelps (without the bong). 2 hours and 5 minutes later, I was physically spent and in need of a beer. So Thank You Joh Lewis for supporting the British Beer industry. read more

I wouldn't get too excited about John Lewis, especially if you're from North America. If you're from Canada, It's just like another The Bay or Eatons. If you're from the U.S, it's just like another Target or Macy's. They sell reasonable priced American and European branded clothes for men's and women, housewear, bedroom accesories, furniture, electronics and toys. The department store itself is nice and bright. Sure, it's a British company, but it's not as memorable as going to Harrod's for that unique shopping experience. If you're living in London, I would recommend going here as an alternative to Ikea and Marks & Spencer. John Lewis is great and all, but the BEST part of this department store is the rooftop restaurant and bar!!! Everyone knows about the food court, but if you go up two flights of stairs from the top floor, you'll eventually step out into paradise. This is the perfect spot to get some fresh air after a full day of shopping and to enjoy the beautiful views of the city. The only restaurant they have up there is a burger place, but it's delicious so we'll overlook the fact that they only serve burgers. read more

Why does JL have a rep for good service?? This company is traaaash!! We ordered a large item - every other decent company delivers these to the room it will be used in...not John Poo-is! Not only this but the delivery crew were dreadful. First, arriving super early in the morning, with no warning or agreement from me that that would ok. I opened the door and said hi, the delivery guy, face like thunder scowled 'first floor or second floor?' I said second, he shot back 'we will only deliver to first floor'...great I guess. We weren't happy with this service at all.and called JL for redress - did they give it to us? Did they eff! They kept asking us to recount what had happened and framed it as 'the delivery crew want to know how they were rude' so I guess the customer is the problem...right? In the end we got a collection and a refund but as a final insult John Lewis will charge us £30 because we're returning an 'unwanted' item. I'm a true fan of John Lewis. Mostly, because of the fact that they operate along the cooperative model: every "employee" is an owner. This, I find, is truly reflected in the way the you get treated here...everyone is super friendly, which I attribute to the fact that they're much more invested in their work than any regular employee...after all, they have a stake in this business. Aside from this, John Lewis is a huge department store (think Macy's for the US folks) where you can find simply everything: from bedding, lighting, kitchen gadgets, perfumes, food...really everything. Whilst not as sexy as Selfridges nor as beautiful as Liberty, John Lewis, about mid-way down Oxford Street, is a notable London department store stocking everything from premium beauty brands to electrical appliances, iPods to flowers. This department store's USP has got to be its price match guarantee, meaning John Lewis is never knowingly undercut. I wouldn't personally shop here for clothes, the selection erring on the side of middle aged middle England as it does, but John Lewis' beauty section is fantastic and its hosiery selection even more so. Being a gal that would not balk at spending £30 on a pair of La Perla stockings should my budget - hypothetically - stretch that far, I have high - hypothetical - standards when it comes to hosiery. And I can highly recommend John Lewis' selection. The flagship store of the John Lewis chain, although less intimate and more crowded than Peter Jones, is nevertheless larger and has a wider range in many departments, especially menswear, lighting, gifts and furniture. The quality of service is still as good, though, as is their promise to match the prices for equivalent items in other stores. You can find anything in this department store, with it's motto, that it is not knowingly undersold, from beauty, fashion to toys, TVs, computers, sport and leisure, home and garden, gifts and the list goes on. They do not have sales but instead have Clearance with special buys which are exclusive discounts on limited products or for a limited time, and reduced to clear on items that are being discontinued. They recently had a total revamp of their home department. Now containing the largest range of home products of any store in the UK, and today is where I was visiting, looking to revamp my home with new blinds and tableware etc in their clearance sales. There is so much to look at and browse, you could spend all day here. If you want to avoid the queues in any of the ladies head to the two ladies located on the 2nd floor, one in furnishing and one in flooring. For some reason, they never seem to have any queues, and are much nicer. read more

John Lewis is no different to your typical department store, but it clearly has a decidedly English feel to it. I am not even entirely sure where it comes from but it is definitely there. It offers a big selection in every department but they are often hit and miss. For example, the clothes are very middle-aged and classical; rather unappealing in every sense, but the hoisery and lingerie departments are great. The furniture is also very safe and functional, but they have a great electrical and lighting section. I have also been told that John Lewis is a great place for knit crafts and accessories, so if you are part of the knitting circle you will already know all about it! Also just to update you this particular site has a brand new food store opened in their basement on the 3rd of October. I have already visited it and they have an interesting range of culinary items for all tastes. As it is fairly new there is a lot of sampling going on to tempt people to buy from them. I went into the Food Hall at John Lewis (which is actually a Waitrose) to pick up some lunch and have to say, I was throughly impressed! The food hall has EVERYTHING from freshly made salads and pastas, pre packaged sandwiches, fresh fruit to a an excellent wine section (complete with bar. The produce is moderately priced and far better value than dining at a restaurant for lunch! I had a wonderful experience - even though it was lunchtime in Central London the aisles were not too crowded and there were upwards of 20 tills, all of which had staff behind them so although the queue looked long, I waited less than 2 minutes to pay for my food! There were also cheese and ale tasters giving out fee nibbles - all of the staff seemed friendly and helpful. The food hall itself was bright, ver clean and well laid out. Fingers crossed you never have to deal with John Lewis' delivery team or Customer Services as we have found both to be incompetent and in one case downright rude! Trying to resolve delivery and installation of a dishwasher has been nothing short of a nightmare. JL was happy to accept the order for £900 but it appears they did so even though they could not actually deliver and install in our area (we live in North East Lincolnshire, not darkest Peru!). If you miss a call from them you get a standard email asking you to call  back but when you do you can't speak to the person who rang you so you have to start from scratch every time and explain the whole saga over and over again...... aaargh!!! In some cases I was hanging on the phone for half an hour while they tried to figure out what the problem was. They have accepted that their system is flawed and that their staff have done things they should not have done and after weeks of hassle and stress and many calls they have determined that is worth a paltry £50. Shame on you John Lewis ..... I though you prided yourself on excellent customer services, that is why we have been long standing customers and have ordered many things from you in the past. We certainly will not repeat this mistake and would absolutely not recommend anyone we know to order from you either. Buyer beware!!! Thoroughly disappointing, a total DISGRACE. there should be a 0 star option, which would accurately rate this experience with John Lewis. Unprofessional, incompetent, and verging on fraudulent. Ordered a fan and some plimsols two weeks ago. The fan arrived, and plimsolls are nowhere to be seen. Chansing John Lewis for an explanation, and now for a refund for one week already - and in reply getting the copy paste apology email that they have 'passed this on' to this and that department. So, It's basically a department store and has anything you may need. From house furnishing and accessories, any type of elecricals, clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment and of course, a place to eat. It's very useful to have so many shopping choices at one building. I recommend checking their website, which is well organized and you can see all the items that are selling. including the department guide. There is a coffee shop on the fourth floor and a restaurant on the top floor, which I personally adore. The main reason I come here, besides some good clothing brands, is the electricals section -- more concretly, the cameras and lenses. Being a professional photographer, buying new equipment can be so stressful and hard. The amount and quality of photography equipment is impressing. I've known the staff for a long time now and I ensure you, you can ask them any type of questions. They are very experienced and it's always a joy to talk about cameras and inventory with them. A massive mid-market department store on the heart of Oxford Street. A perfect place to buy anything you possibly could want for your home. They really do have everything there! What's great about John Lewis is that unlike many department stores that cater to the very wealthy or the poor masses, John Lewis crosses most demographics...you can get top of the line kitchen-ware or if you are on a budget you can get some low-frills but decent quality goods as well. My department store of choice for most things. John Lewis is a much loved British Institution (as Ben C. also notes) and for good reason. Reassuring in its simple, non flashy layout and goods on display. Rational and straightforward, almost minimalist in a good way so it feels new and never claustrophobic like other department stores. They always stock the best products and I'm a particular fan of the basement kitchenware and gadgets department. The Waitrose Foodhall can also be found in the basement. Electronic gadgets can be browsed and bought without any annoying upselling or pressure tactics that are an unfortunate aspect of some other electronic stores. Competitive pricing is another plus. But what really sets John Lewis apart is the excellent customer service. Again, straightforward and friendly. Staff are always knowledgeable about the products and courteous. I've always had a positive experience and after sales service. The same attributes extend to their website for online ordering. Simple, easy to use and well designed. It would appear to be designed with the customer in mind. Small details I appreciate such as not forcing you to register your information before you can do anything, like so many other sites which always irritates me. Oops, we ate the great cakes before a photo but that's a good sign! A nice relaxed cafe restaurant on the top floor with roof top views of Oxford Street and beyond. A bit old fashioned in a non stylish or retro sort of way but a nice break from the huddle and bustle. OK coffee but passable. Did I mention the cakes? An affordable respite. read more

John Lewis - it's an icon. One of the first big stores I discovered when I first moved to London and still a favorite. While the fashions run a bit pricey for my budget (upper-end high street lines and other upmarket brands), I LOVE that they still have a haberdashery department - something many stores have long since given up. The selection of yarns is especially nice and during their semi-annual sales, some fabulous bargains can be found. We recently set up our wedding list/registry at JL, and the staff were extremely friendly and competent. It makes me very happy with the decision to go with them for the big day. Excellent for homewares and having the most boutique-like Waitrose shop for their foodhall, the place is just great. read more

A super huge department store on Oxford Street in London what's celebrating it's 150th year with a museum which is pretty cool to see how it all began and up to the present day, a lovely cafe on the 5th floor and they have now opened the roof terrace with great views of Oxford Street, i do feel that the department store is looking tired inside and out though compared to Selfridges etc. They do have some amazing things though for youre home and quite a good menswear and luggage department though! read more

We tried multiple time on multiple PCs. 2. 6 international calls to order a Vase, their phone bank is beyond ghastly. Their online "live chat" stops at 5PM. Eventually got the order but on checking online see no trace of my order, and have yet to get an email confirmation. How they stay in business defies belief. read more
