This is possibly my favorite YMCA out of all of them that I've visited thus far. Take note that the YMCA is nationwide and you need to let them know you are an out of state member when you check in (just say Nationwide Member). Unique features here: - Lots of sitting areas - Top floor indoor track - Large men's and women's locker rooms on the bottom floor - Ample space available to spread out from people - Hair stylist station in men's locker room - Treadmill in men's locker room No complaints here! It's a discombobulated puzzle on the top floor. Each open room offers a different quadrant of machines. One room has your benches/incline/decline. One room has all the treadmills/stairsteppers. One room has yoga/pilates. One room has your weight machines. And the room I finally found is hidden in the back and has all your dumbbells/pulley machines/smith machines. Word to the wise, you'll get a workout going from the bottom to the top floor. Three floors of fun! Enjoy your treasure hunt when you arrive. read more

First trip to this YMCA location. I was doing an errand and figured to see which gym was closest to me. There is parking in the back and it was already pretty full around the time I got there. But saw people leaving also. I was greeted promptly by Charles, I believe, and he was kind enough to give me the verbal tour when I said it was my first visit. I could tell this is a large location. Lockers downstairs, spacious and very well kept. Sauna was a delight and good thing it can hold a lot of people because there were like 8 of us inside at one point. A lot of workout equipment, all types of machines like 3 or 4 rooms upstairs for weights/ machines/ cardio/ etc. Areas for stretching and walking circle. The basketball court was great to finish the workout. I will definitely consider visiting again if in the area. read more

First time visiting this location. I enjoyed the space. I expressed to the front desk that it was my first time using my Triangle membership here and Rodney was more than willing to give me a full tour. I learned a lot. I appreciate the initiative Rodney took to show me around and explain each area to me. I never fully got this at the home location. I love that I can charge my phone on the cardio machines while working out. The cardio area is spacious. The assisted weight area is perfect and I like how there are separate spaces for different workout focus areas (cardio, assisted strength and functional fitness). The indoor pool is perfect for all year enjoyment. I look forward to continuing to go to this location even if it's a few extra minutes out. The service here was fantastic! read more

I prefer this Y over the Finley location. This is a wonderful location with ample parking for this neck of the woods. This Y is located in the Cameron village area of Raleigh, traffic can get a little thick with NC State nearby. This location was refreshing. I found the facility modern and the staff wonderful. My daughter plays here some Saturday's for her away games. This location features a cute cafe near the entrance. I absolutely loved the vintage piece of artwork made of the basketball court floor hanging in the lobby. This location did not reek of chlorine as you walk in. The basketball staff were extremely professional and welcoming. If I lived in this area, this would be my go to Y. read more

I was in very familiar grounds after playing 18 at RGA, and decided to take a right at the Bell Tower and workout at Alexander. Good location on H-borougj st about a block from State's campus. Upon entering I was pleasantly greeted by their desk person, and he gave me the cliff notes version on the layout... 3 floors-The Basement houses all 3 locker rooms and the aquatic center. Men's room is spacious with cardio equipment, barbers chair, sauna, showers, steam bath. 2nd floor-Check in operations, and several exercise studios, gym. 3rd-floor-Cardio, track, weights, and more weights, 3 Handball/Raquetball courts. While in the Locker room, an employee, AJ, approached me and proceeded to give me a tour. Thanks AJ. This is definitely a great workout option when one is in the downtown area. read more

Ani wanted to come here with me, but so did Alex, so I came here with Alex-and-her. Really incredible YMCA on every level, although a little busy, and with some rude people working out here, for sure. Turns into a bit of a meat market and some real egos in the male weightlifting areas for sure. As long as you don't come in the evenings when it's extremely busy I would recommend this Y - it is by far the best one in the region to work out at. There's really no downside because it has so much of everything and so many areas and so many rooms. It just needs a little bit more of the same (space, equipment, weights, benches), because it is as I say so extremely extraordinary busy especially in the evenings. There are some really nice employees working here, and and good facilities as well. Not to mention a barber shop in the men's restroom!! I mean who else has that??! read more

I moved to Raleigh a couple months ago and after working out at all the YMCA's in Durham (4 total!) for about three years, I moved to working out just at the Alexander YMCA. I LOVE it! I typically go in the late morning to afternoon or after 7pm in the evening. I love going to classes for my weight lifting or changing up my cardio routine and they have a great variety. Currently loving the Cardio Jam class and the weekday noon lifting classes. They have parking across the street from the YMCA or behind the building. I typically park across the street because the entrance you'll walk through (after pressing the green button to buzz you in) is located right by the locker rooms and main cardio studios. Other things I really like about this location are free lockers with locks, large and small towels, large locker rooms, and the gym in general is a great size with an indoor track, lots of machines and "stretch spaces" and a pool. Plus, if I ever need to travel to Durham, Chapel Hill or a surrounding area for work, I can use my membership at any North Carolina gym (I've even used my membership in Charlotte!) The price is $$ (about $40/month with my Duke Employee Discount) but if you're a workout junkie this is a great gym to invest in. read more

My review has changed drastically after I've been frequenting the YMCA more often. Since I work a mid-shift, I often go around 9am, and the gym is just fine. However, when I go in the evening (after 8pm), this place goes to pot. Why the inconsistency, you ask? The phrase "it's like night & day" totally applies to this YMCA. The staff during the day are amazing, and the night-time staff are quite aloof and disengaged. In the morning, you have several staff members coming around saying "good morning!" and cheering you on as you're sweating to the 80s at 9am. But at night... oh, at night...... you can't get staff acknowledge you, let alone say something positive. It's a feat to get them to stop using equipment as benches to text & talk to their buddies, and they certainly don't raise an eyebrow to someone acting out in the gym. It's quite foolish if you ask me. At night, I'm fairly certain the YMCA turns into an evening daycare; adults drop their kids off and come pick them up at close. During this time, these kids plague the weight room, and that's OK per YMCA's policy that they must be 12+ to workout in the weight/aerobics rooms. Seriously?! I'm all about kids working out, but I think they need a bit of supervision... also seems like a huge liability for the Y, who knows. Looks like I'm going gym-hunting next week..... anyone have any suggestions for a new gym that's not full of unsupervised youth & apathetic staff? Anyone? read more

I have been going to the Y for about 3 years now. During that time the gym has gone through a number of changed, completely changing facilities and moving from and old school "gym" to a really nice huge building. I like to run, but sometimes the weather isn't exactly conducive to that. The Y has an indoor track that runs above a huge gymnasium where you can run (12 times around = mile). They have a pretty decent amount of elliptical machines and treadmills, and a huge dedicated weight area as well. One of the best things about the Y is the classes. They have everything from your traditional Yoga and spin classes to less traditional Belly dancing classes. All the classes are free with a membership. My only complaint would really be that currently the pool isn't on site (you have to go down the road) the pool is actually located closer to my house than the Y itself however which is convenient when I want to swim a few laps, but obnoxious if I want to swim and then run a while. read more

Young man, there's no need to feel down, I say young man, get yourself off the ground... Silly song, but the Alexander Family Y-M-C-A on Hillsborough is pretty nice. Huge renovation going on, they're still not done yet with the pool and racquetball courts (late 2008). Facilities are quite nice and clean, 2 basketball courts, indoor track, 3 fitness rooms for pilates, yoga, tae kwon do, a good set of aerobics equipment, a slightly disappointing machine/free weight section. Free towel service, day lockers and clean locker rooms fill out the story. Even though I didn't sign up with the place, I was impressed. Definitely seeing it being a good choice for families and young couples looking for a good overall gym. Maybe not such a good choice for single people, or those who want a substantial free-weight/workout room. It's also a bit pricey and looks like a family zone. So even though it ain't my thang, I'd give the YMCA a thumbs up! read more

The YMCA is USUALLY a good safe place to exercise at (Except for the times you must dodge cars when exiting the gym). I've visited the gym to swim, run or use the machines. I like the new exercise room which is a good haven for introverts. The equipment is high quality and the gym is usually clean. The gym is large and has a bottom floor with classrooms and lockers, a second floor with a large desk, classrooms and seating areas. The top floor has a nice track and it has two main rooms with exercise equipment. If you actually plan to exercise (rather than stand and talk) do NOT come at 5 pm if you can help it. It's reasonable to arrive earlier or try coming at 7 pm. Parking is horrible if you arrive at 5 pm on a weekday. The gym does have MANY Christian messages, of course, because it's a Christian organization. If I say nothing no one will know that I'm a heathen. Right? There are only three changing rooms in the women's locker room, although the men (for some reason) have massage parlors and Jacuzzis? WHAT? Why is the women's locker room half the size of the men's?(There are just as many women as men who visit the Y) I would never pay for a membership to this sexist gym. Why do women not deserve the same treatment as men? Young man, young man, yep this gym caters to men. The men's lockers even have machines and the women do not. Why should women not have a private retreat away from the noise and activity? Clearly women are second-class citizens at the YMCA. They also cater to children, if you dislike children- than this is not the gym for you! I don't mind them, but often I find them unattended, playing with machines! Hazard alert! The gym attracts a mix of ages; old men and women, middle aged men and women, 20somethings and teens. You will not feel out of place if you're a minority- it has clientèle of various races. Most people are friendly, but as always there are exceptions. At least no one will bother you if you have headphones in. The towels provided by the gym are too small therefore many women refuse to wear them( Ick! Please try covering your privates!) Try to use the locker room as quickly as possible or just arrive at slow hours. Use the towel... USE IT! There are not enough changing rooms... I prefer to change in private so I don't have to stick my posterior in someone's face while they're trying to access a locker. If the rooms are full I just change in the shower stall. The exercise machines are mostly new, and they are okay. The heart rate monitors are wonky, but I can overlook this. It will be difficult to find a machine if you arrive at the wrong time. They're not super special machines, but they run smoothly and easy to use. There are stair steppers, ellipticals, bicycles, treadmills and gliding machines. The classes offered at the Y are high quality, but it's easy to be intimidated by yuppies and their bouncing blond ponytails. Oh I'm so inadequate. I've tried a few, but they are often cramped and they play the music far too loud. You can take classes in yoga, spinning, step, kick-boxing and toning. I'm relatively fit, but I found that it's tough to get into the rhythm of classes. Try them if you're interested in the community atmosphere and challenge. They are high quality and are addicting when you 'get into them' says a friend. The staff are either friendly or irritating and immature. Some of them would rather talk and tell jokes rather than do their job! The older staff members are mostly pretty awesome, overlooking a few irritating 'good ol boys' who insure that all of the tvs are constantly turned to sports. Some of them stand around an talk loudly when I'm trying work my tush off on a machine. The parking lot is not fun. There are two lots and they're full if you come at primetime, but otherwise there will always be a spot for you. Try this gym if you want to get exercise for a low cost, but it is nothing fancy- especially if you're female! Try to come at less crowded hours if you want to exercise is peace and quiet. read more

I have nothing but love for the Alexander Y. If I didn't like exercising outside so much, I'd be there a whole lot more. Here's what to like about the Y: 1. Price: Totally affordable and even more affordable if you're 28 or younger. 2. Quality: Most everything is brand new. There are always plenty of exercise machines, multiple weight stations, nice locker rooms with sauna/steam room/free lockers/TV, a great pool, a small track, a full gym... 3. Classes: There are a HUGE number of classes with multiple options per day of spinning, yoga, pilates, sports conditioning, etc. The yoga classes are great and I personally like them for instructors who play the Avett Brothers and other relaxing but non "yoga-y" bands during class. 4. Clientele and staff: Anyone can and everyone does work out here. It is a supportive atmosphere that welcomes all levels. You'll find elite athletes and total beginners. If you're looking for a meathead or pick-up gym, the Y's not for you. If you're looking for a great place to exercise with a great affiliated community (I neglected to mention the auxiliary running clubs, fitness buddies, etc) , the Y is great. read more

I've seen several negative reviews but my experiences have all been very positive. Enough so that I created a Yelp profile just to give this place a positive review. Just about everyone I've met who works here is super-nice and friendly, I've never really had anyone be rude to me. I work out in the weight area two or three times a week. The equipment is new and clean. There's even a barber shop in the men's locker room! My son has played in their soccer and basketball leagues and really enjoys them. The coaches are really good. They're more about having the kids having a good time and learning than winning. My kids also go to the after care and summer camp. I've never heard any complaints about the counselors. I also do Y-Guides with my daughter and that's been a very positive experience as well. read more

Alexander Family YMCA is huge, clean and full of friendly workers. I always feel so welcome when I head here to work out. I usually stick to the work out equipment upstairs, but I have also tried a couple of classes which were enjoyable (and tough!). The only issue I have with the group classes are there they are really jam packed (to the point of being uncomfortable at times) and the instructors can sometimes come off as entirely too happy...Like fake-happy if you know what I mean. There's nothing more annoying that a bouncy instructor joking and laughing when you're trying to focus on not flopping over like a dead fish. And then remarking happily about how easy that was. Every now and then you may see a stray child wandering around the equipment as well, though the staff is usually pretty good about making sure the kids know what their doing before they kill themselves on free weights. The wait for equipment isn't too bad either, i've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a treadmill to open up. The locker rooms are great, though they could do with added a few more changing rooms. I feel like three isn't enough for peak hours when the wait to change is long. I've also heard that the men's locker room has a few more amenities than the women's, and i'm curious to know if that's true. The women's lockers have some exercise equipment, a sauna and a steam room. Also, because it's always worth mentioning: parking here is a NIGHTMARE. there's never enough spots. There are a few satellite lots a few blocks away, but none of them are particularly well lit. Luckily if you feel super worried about going to your car they do offer to walk with you. I appreciate the consideration! I can't really comment on the value of coming here; my job pays a decent chunk of our gym costs so it only costs me a couple of dollars a month to be a member (make sure to see if your job or school does the same!). I heard it's rather expensive without any discounts...I'm not sure I would attend if I had to pay the full monthly member price. But for the price i'm paying this is a solid spot for a good workout! read more

There aren't enough good things to say about this Y. It is such a community amenity! The location can't be beat, the staff is always friendly and helpful, the programs are top-notch, and the facilities are always clean and stocked. I have expressed some concerns before with the staff (especially re: the crosswalk on Hillsborough that drivers blow right through) and they have always provided genuine, friendly responses. All of the classes are good and my favorite is toning (with the exception of the Tuesday/Thursday morning ones; a little too slow for my taste). I like ALL of the toning instructors. Great value! I just joined in February! I'm really enjoying the classes and the walking track. I'll usually walk on the track 20-30 minutes before taking a dancing class (like Zumba or Pop Fitness) downstairs. I don't get to go as much as I would like, but this is the closest Y to me so this is the one that I frequent. The gym is pretty big and has everything you could need, but it gets sooo crowded... especially early in the week right after work, that it is nearly impossible to get the bench or machine that you want. I often end up waiting or doing something else until it frees up. Half the time someone is watching it more intently than me and grabs it first, so then I have to wait for them too.. There have been a few times that I have been pretty frustrated and just left (Can't wait for all the New Year Resolutioners!!!). They also have an Olympic sized pool, basketball courts, a track, Racquetball/Handball courts, etc. too which is cool. Parking can be tricky at times too (who am I kidding, most of the time!). Their lot fills up and they have gravel lots across the street that can fill up as well, along with street parking on Hillsborough St. - a pretty darn busy street. My stay at the Brownstone next door allowed me free access to the Y. Now I'm not Christian and I'm not really young, any longer. That makes it more difficult to swallow the Christian quotes in the hallway and hear about the missions (oh, the horror; convincing others to follow your way!) with photos on display. But that being put aside for a great massage, I really enjoyed the mens locker room. Odd that it had all the TVs, the comfy chairs (a guy was actually eating lunch in there!) and the work out machines (in a locker room??? Nude workouts?). Great massage, nice sauna and private shower stalls made for a really nice afternoon. Hope to do it again sometime (maybe I'll actually get in a good workout first). This gym is amazing! We have been members for years. After being disappointed by Planet Fitness. We decided to join the YMCA and enjoy all of the benefits that come with joining a real gym. My wife and I love the staff, the facilities, and the amazing group fitness classes. The YMCA app offers convenient access to group fitness classes and so much more. The list of programs is endless. A few of our favorite classes are the morning Sports Conditioning and the spin cycle classes. The instructors are so professional and motivating. While the YMCA is a huge facility that is new and shiny, the management of it is lacking in some regards, in particular with the aquatics director who cannot seem to accommodate those who want to lap swim after work. They pack in so many classes that at times there isn't a single lane open. And, for as large as the facility is, it's not big enough for the rush hour yoga/pilates/aerobics/spin class demand. The herds of people thundering through those fitness studios leaves them filthy, and the clean up crews do not keep up. Parking is an absolute nightmare. Basically, if you work 9-5, do not bother joining this gym. Going outside working hours will leave you fighting mobs. And the weekends? They close super early, so if you work weekends you're pretty much out of luck. I'm sorry I wasted the $110 initiation fee on this place. I'm seriously disappointed. read more

This YMCA is very good except i had a problem with the cafe. There was only one person working and i ordered a muffin to be heated up and it sat in the microwave for about 5 minutes and it took about 15 just to give it to me. My friend also ordered something it was a bagel. We had to be somewhere by 12:00 and she ordered at 11:30. But she got her bagel at 11:54 giving her 6 minutes to eat it. It was also not very clean and not well stocked. It would have been better with at least 2 people working. Thank you. read more

I love this y! I am a new member ad it has been fabulous thus far..even in spite of some mess ups with my new account..it is a very busy y but have always been able to get a good workout! This gym is great even for those who have high standards in appearance and sanitation. Ample TVs and magazines to keep you occupied, pool, weights, cardio, frequent and interesting classes (even ballroom dancing!), track, raquetball, basketball... busy times are between 4pm and 8pm... they have "I got next" cards so the most you would wait even in the busiest of times for cardio equipt. is 30 mins. This YMCA doesn't have the class selection you see at other YMCA's, like Kerr or Finley, but that's why a triangle membership is worth it. If you have kids, bringing them here is a no-brainer. I've been attending this Y a few times a week for almost a year, usually around lunchtime. So far I haven't had to wait for a machine but the facility is pleasantly full. Friendly customer service is really important to me. As a member's guest, I was told the first few times that I did not need an ID with my guest pass. When I came the next time they requested one. I did not have it because I did not want to bring in more than I needed and they made me go all the way back to my car to get it. The lady then had the audacity to ask me why I didn't just have them take a picture- I don't know, ask YOUR staff. I then requested membership information and they told me when I turn in the paperwork I can have a 3-day pass while they process the paperwork. Whoever is working today told me that that was untrue and I will have to wait. Well, I will not be turning in my paperwork because this gym is a mess. Their staff is inconsistent and is not flexible for their guests. Lifetime Fitness it is! Also, the hours are terrible and the gym closes because of weather when there is hardly any danger. read more

I've been a member of the Alexander YMCA since I was 16 years old, that's 10 years now. I remember when it used to be a small outdated facility with apartments on top of the gym. Since then it has been completely rebuilt. PROS: The facility is new. It's very clean, and the equipment (mainly cardio) is up to date and well maintained. The locker rooms are comprehensive. They have carpeting in the locker area, large size lockers, a lounge area with comfortable leather lazy boy style chairs, multiple flat-screen Tv's, a steam room, a sauna, access to the pool, and the men's locker room has a barber, and massage room that are available with an appointment. They have many classes from yoga, to ty-bo style workouts. The staff like the gym has their pros and cons. The good ones are professional, courteous and responsive. The gym itself is more oriented towards cardio than weights. However, there are more than enough machines and free weights to have a comprehensive workout if that is your desire. The pool is olympic sized with a decent amount of lanes. Now here are the cons and this is honestly the only reason I wrote this review and the reason this place has only 2 stars, when a few years ago I would have given it 5. CONS: So many... More of a daycare with a fitness center than a real gym. Basically If you're a working person who doesn't get off work till later in the evening, an avid simmer, an athlete, or gym enthusiast where regular exercise is part of your lifestyle then this is the opposite of what you desire. I'm sitting here writing this review because the gym is closed. AGAIN due to "inclement weather". There is an inch and a half of snow on the ground NONE on the pavement and of course the gym is closed. For such an expensive monthly fee I believe the hours are suited towards the staff and not the paying customer. Want to workout in the later evening on Friday, or the weekend? Not gonna happen. Want to workout in the morning on Sunday? NOPE. Want to have a good workout from 5 p.m to 8 p.m on the weekdays? NEVER gonna happen. If you love swimming expect to be regularly told the pool is closed for the swim team, classes, or that only 2 lanes are open and you will have to wait and share one lane with three other people. The place is a zoo and completely packed on weekday evenings. The only time the place has reasonable hours, and not a coincidence its so crowded during these times. No parking... Barely any lockers available. Expect to be sandwiched between two naked men in the locker room. Every inch of the gym is completely packed during these times. Even though the facility is fairly large, the gym will not turn down new customers, and the amount of people has and will continue to grow. The gyms not getting any bigger, but they are always signing up new members. The hours of the gym upset me more than anything. The facility seems to care more about the convenience of the staff than paying customers. Staff get to go home early Friday night and I don't get to workout. Workout Saturday later Saturday evening? They close at 6.pm. Want to workout Sunday? LOL you've got from 1 to 7pm.. More than half the staff are kids who have no work experience and don't know how to talk to customers and lack work ethic. These kids are mostly volunteers. Yet another way for the gym to save money instead of hiring adults who work for a living and act like they do. I don't pay to go here and I'm still whining about how much it sucks. So I have come to the conclusion that I will be forced to tailor my workout schedule to the gyms. Meaning I will start going in the mornings, or early afternoons when the gym is actually usable. So basically If you don't workout from 5 to 8pm on the weekdays and don't workout on the weekends this is 4 star place. Personally I like having a gym like 24/hour fitness where you don't have to plan your schedule ahead of time, and can just go workout whenever it's best for you.
