This place is awesome! I got a haircut since I forgot my clippers at home. The two ladies there were talking about how drunk they got. The one talked about how there was only one bar in Savannah that she was still allowed to drink at. The other one talked about how she was on a mission to purchase as much ammo as she could. When I went here over a decade ago, it was cheerful and welcoming. Having moved back to the fan I thought I'd give it a try. I walked in to four people working and two customers. Not one person responded to my "hello" or even looked up from their work. I thought I'd wait, but even when one patron was finished and left, nobody said a word, or even said it will be just a minute. After another half hour of waiting with no response, I left. These guys are just cold to newcomers. Even past customers they forgot about. Save yourself the aggravation. read more

2 words - "OLD SCHOOL"!! I was walking around Richmond and stumbled across this gem of a barber shop. I like traditional, old school shops and here it is. Mr. Campbell took me as a walk-in with minimal wait. Shop has been operating continuously since 1929 and has seen the likes of Roosevelt, Churchill, Elvis, Dean Martin, and many other notables. Floor, wall mirrors and shelves are original - super clean & neat. You know you're getting a good haircut when scissors are used for the fade up and hot lather/straight edge for the final trim. (Of note, they have a shoe shine guy there - pretty old guy. I brought my boots back the next day for a shine. Would not recommend him, not a good shine. But that doesn't detract from the barber shop rating.) read more

The John Marshall Barber Shop was established in 1929. Mr. Campbell knows all of the ins and outs of the business and has worked there for over 50 years. They remodeled several years ago and in doing so revealed and restored many aspects of the original shop from 1929. It is the real deal and such a pleasant atmosphere. read more

Never been here and never will. Called the first time trying to make an appointment and some lady was giving me attitude on the phone. I asked for an appointment 7:30AM- which is the opening time on the website- was told they open at 8AM; ok fine. Then, was asked which barber and was given a list of names. As I initially announced, I've never been here so I jokingly said "whoever's the boss,"- got some long winded response after I proceeded to explain that I don't mind whoever is available since I have never been here. I was subsequently given a list of names again, and my comments were disregarded. The person on the phone ended up not being able to set me up with an 8AM appointment the rest of the week which is fine, so I will be going somewhere else. But it was a shame this is how you treat your first time customers who haven't even come before. I recommend you change your times if you don't open at 7:30AM to save the hassle of receiving a rude phone call. read more

I have visited on a regular basis, however, I've recently made the decision to go elsewhere. The haircuts have always been wonderful and I really enjoy Mara and the congenial demeanor of the owner, however, there is another woman that has been fairly rude to me on at least two occasions and is the reason why I no longer plan to bring service to the establishment. I recently called to see if there was availability for a walk-in, and this woman curtly announced to me that it was Friday, with a tone implying that I was some sort of dolt for even asking the question. This is not the first time that she's done this. Several months ago, I was walking past and figured I'd stop in to see if there was availability for a walk-in. A simple "I'm sorry, we're booked up today, but I'd be glad to schedule an appointment for you," would have sufficed, but this kind of response seemed as though it would be too difficult for this person. She, instead, snapped back saying that they were unavailable and that they take appointments. I replied by drawing attention to the sign about Walk-ins, to which she shrugged off in a condescending manner. Overall, I'm offering up a solid two stars because I really think highly of the gentleman that owns the shop and Mara, but must admit that I'm quite disappointed by the manner by which the other woman conducts herself in a customer-facing position. read more

EXPERIENCE: The John Marshall Barber Shop is probably as good as it gets for those interested in quality service, classic cuts, and a fair price. The shop itself is located on the ground floor of the newly renovated John Marshall Hotel and can be accessed from the street. Your typical haircut will run $18; which can ad up, but unlike bargain "hair salons" it includes a hot lather, straight razor neck shave, eucalyptus face towel, and-above all-a consistent haircut. They also have the built in wall vacuum units and a shoeshine...so there's that too. The John Marshall is frequented by politicians and city leaders of all sorts, so I wouldn't go in asking for a Chelsea cut; however, they are more than capable of executing a more modern "GQ" hairstyle and definitely anything from the 50's. PROS: - Service, these people love what they do - Quality - Charm/Atmosphere - Street parking usually available right in front of the entrance (have change) CONS: - They're typically open 8AM-4PM, a pain for out-of-towners and those with strict work hours. BOTTOMLINE: Classic haircuts in a historic landmark by legendary Richmond barbers. OTHER DETAILS: - They accept walk-ins, but your best bet is setting up an appointment. If you want a great hair cut that's consistently great every time you go, then definitely start coming here. Victor has been cutting my hair since they re-opened and he does an incredible job! He's also a really funny guy to talk to. I was so tired of going to your $13-$15/hair cut place and having to monitor my barber/hair cutter just to make sure I received a semi-OK haircut. Every time I went to one of those places, I could never get a consistent hair cut. For $18 at John Marshall, I can sit back and relax while Victor works his "masterpiece". They have TVs there but for some reason, I'm more entertained by people watching the people walking the sidewalks. I will never go to another cheap hair cut place again. read more

Is there any way to give this place a negative 5 stars? I have no idea what just happened when the first thing that comes out of the barbers mouth is "Oh, do you want the regulatory," followed by her eyes rolled back as my colleague and I both witnessed. What does that haircut even mean? Just because I'm in uniform doesn't mean there is only one type of haircut. For whatever reason why she was so bothered, I decided not to get a haircut and walked out of the establishment. She proceeded to tell me that it was because she was a female, emphasized she had a son in Afghanistan, and then to top it off decided to say that I was stupid. WTF! I have never been treated like this from someone in the service industry especially from a mother that claims to have a child in the service. I have never reviewed a business before, but I had to make an exception for the astoundingly poor service I received at John Marshall Barber Shop. For a place that calls itself a "traditional barber shop" it certainly doesn't retain any of those values. They do not make you feel welcome. They are completely devoid of professionalism. They also don't finish a cut with a straight razor, which was strange. I will not be returning. *Note* I cannot speak on Hugh Campbell, the owner who seemed like a very pleasant person. The first time I received a cut from Mara Leocadio. The cut was rushed. She ignored me nearly the whole time. But in the end, the cut was alright. The second time I received a cut from Victor Gonzalez. I asked for a high fade like the last time. The cut took nearly an hour, and I thought it might have been due to his attention to detail, however I think it might have been more of an inattention while he was watching the TV. Towards the end the haircut resembled more-so a bowl cut than a high fade and when I asked him to make the "puffing" bits shorter he became frustrated and mean. In the end I was still dissatisfied, however I still tipped because he spent a lot of time. As I was leaving he said that he was glad that I was the last person so he could spend more than an hour on me, scoffed and then snarkily snapped that I would finally be free. read more

I was a walk-in yesterday afternoon at about 4:00, patronizing JM Barber for the first time at the instance of two friends of mine. I received excellent service from Victor in terms of his inquiry as to the look I sought, attentive and unhurried execution, and cordiality. There was a convivial, friendly atmosphere and I felt as welcomed as the five or so regulars who came in during my visit. All at a fair and reasonable price, $22.00 not including tip. This is a true barber establishment, as compared with "haircut stores." John Marshall will be my tonsorial home going forward. read more

Today I walked-in to the John Marshall Barber Shop without an appointment. It had been too long since my last cut, which had been a horrible cut while traveling. Kim, impressively so, knew right away how I preferred my cut and after a brief review of my preference she set out on the task. The trim was completed promptly, but not hurried, and was done perfectly. The precision was obvious while she worked. The shop itself is clean, friendly, charming and deep with the distinct character that is typical of a proper barber shop. This is a great shop for professional men get cleaned and shaped. Had Kim today. Started off very friendly and chatty which I'm usually ok with however her lack of attention caused the guard to pop off of the clipper and essentially shave a notch into the side of my head. In order to correct it she buzzed it much shorter than I had expected on both sides. On top of that when we BOTH discussed keeping the top long, she cut nearly an inch off. To top it off, the easiest part of a haircut, the nape line, she made extremely low. I could hardly see in the mirror how off it was and after completely losing my patience I simply left. Towards the end I started to get the sense that she was drunk from how haphazardly she was cutting my hair. My first and last time at this barber shop. read more

Oh, how I love this place. It struck me as old-school RVA. I got a routine haircut, and was wowed by the experience. $18 for full lather, half-hour cut, scalp massage, more of a haircut than I've ever had. I also looked for a name plate for "Kim" who I think previous reviews referred to negatively and did not see her name so I assume she must be gone. There isn't an option for negative stars so this the lowest I can rate this place. I hope that this is an isolated incident with one particular barber(white female, homely, and in need of a makeover) and not representing the shop as a whole. My buddy and I made appointments to get a haircut and when we walked in a grizzly looking female rolled her eyes at us and said so and so is not here so I guess I'll do it and proceeded to treat my partner with disrespect and a horrible attitude. My partner after only a minute said that he had changed his mind and would not be getting his haircut. She proceeded to tell him that she cuts all of the important people in towns hair, been doing it for 35 years, that he didn't want a woman barber and that he was stupid. We walked out without any response in complete disbelief! We hope that nobody will ever be treated like that again. If we had the barbers name we would have posted it. read more

I don't live in Richmond, but I do stay there for business from time to time. My first visit to the shop was a walk in visit and Mr Campbell did an awesome job and was very polite and accommodating. The second visit was not great! The shop was busy, it was 10:55am, as I walked in I asked the first barber who was sitting in the chair if they have time for a walk in today. She turned and tried to pass me off to another barber who had an appointment at 11. I thought I heard her say she had an appointment at 11:30, 35 minutes away. She reluctantly took me and asked how I'd like it cut. I told her I'd like a 3 on top and a 2 on the side and faded together. She made a face and paused, then told me she is a master barber for 33 years and it was rude for me to tell her I wanted it faded. Ah, I'm not a barber and I was only telling her what I wanted. If it's rude, I'm sorry, but I felt belittled as she continued to tell me I didn't need to tell her to fade it. So, I just had enough, got up, removed the cape and left. I feel bad leaving a bad review, but she was not nice in any of her interaction with me. Other than saying have a nice day as I left. I'm not sure of her name, but I feel it's probably the same lady mentioned in other reviews. read more

Came in and didn't really know what I wanted done, having not had my hair cut for a few months during moving and getting situated with jobs and school, but they helped me figure out what I wanted and did an excellent job getting me exactly what I wanted done. Rude, curt, and not willing to give information. I called at 8:30 AM to schedule an appointment. I received a lady on the phone that was just downright unwilling to provide me with any information. I simple asked, what appointment times are available for today for a haircut? She was curt and annoyed in her response with: I can't cut your hair right now. i'm the only one here. i've got my own appointments from now until whenever someone else comes in. someone is coming in at 10.' so i asked if i can have an appointment at 10, to which the rude woman sounded more annoyed and said 'no you can't. she's coming in at 10. 1030, is that what you want?' i said sure if that's the earliest available. how much does it cost? 'it's 20 dollars.' ok that sounds great, can i also have a shave? 'what? no if you want a shave you can't come at 10:30. and it's 20 dollars. so it's 40 dollars and you can't come at 10:30. it'll take too long.' umm ok so then are there other times i can come in for that? ' wait so you don't want the 10:30?' no, i don't, because i can't get a shave at that time you said. 'ok alright.' AND THEN SHE HUNG UP what an embarrassment of customer service and I had never even step foot in the shop. read more

Victor Victor Victor. This guy is the man. I hate haircuts. I can never find a barber that actually listens to and follows through on what I want. People always tell me, "it's because you go on Friday and in the afternoon, that they are tired and ready to go home." I'm sure they're right but I refuse to accept this as an excuse for a bad haircut. If you are in the business of altering someone's appearance based on their requests you SHOULD go home if "being tired and ready to go home" results in your production of a poor haircut. Well guess what, I called to schedule my haircut this Friday morning for 5 or 5:30. All they had was a 3:30, and so I took it. When I showed up, the remaining staff were in the process of leaving and quickly left. I didn't think much of it, it did seem a bit early but I was consumed by my usual "pre-cut jitters". The "pre-cut jitters" are a result of a sequence of bad experiences, bad haircuts, by different sized scissors and various brands of electric razors always in the hand of a "barber". So there was Victor. As always, in the beginning, I was nervous. I made suggestions and reiterated concerns. He seemed to be having none of it and with the confidence of a man who is a master of his trade, he abruptly silenced me. 10 minutes in and that confidence transcended. Then it hit me. Maybe the staff had left early because it was Friday, they were tired, and wanted to go home. Maybe they did their job for the week but MAYBE just MAYBE they knew they should head home because they didn't WANT to give haircuts anymore and when you don't want to give a cut and do, it's not going to be a good one. I'd like to think this was the case. Why? I got exactly what I wanted with the man that stayed behind. After trying 3 or 4 barbers in Richmond since my move, I am finally confident I have found one that I want to cut my hair and one that wants to cut hair even on Friday at 4. Victor's $20 haircut took a good 25 to 30 minutes just like a good old $20 haircut should. He did an excellent short fade primarily with scissors, rarely seen. I will be back next cut. The first time I was here I got Mara and with a sort of vague sense of what I wanted and some direction she was able to give me a great haircut and a pleasant experience while doing it. This was a great experience for me and if it was my only one I'd rate them a solid five star, but it's not. Today I went again, without an appointment, and was told I could be squeezed in by Kim in about 30 minutes, no big deal. I waited and when it was my turn sat in the chair and within five seconds got into an argument about whether I wanted clippers or scissors. I'm not picky so I said whatever works. Unfortunately this didn't appease her and we were stuck there for a minute going over the differences. After this rough introduction and a few more moments of contention, like her telling me to keep my head straight and acting like I'm a disobedient child, my experience was really soured. Barbers are in a service field, so I feel they should be at least somewhat personable, but this wasn't the case here. The saving grace in all this was that she did give me a good haircut, but I can get that elsewhere without the condescension and attitude. Overall, the quality of work here is pretty good, which can be attested to by their constant flow of customers. They stay pretty booked, so if you're planning on going I recommend calling ahead to schedule an appointment. read more

This shop had a potential of five stars, heck, Marielle gets five stars for her service, unfortunately, the woman sitting in the first chair, when you walk into the shop, looked like nothing short of a miserable mess. The look on her face, from the time I walked in till the time I left was like "...just shoot me and get this over with..." She was dressed very unprofessionally (in a hat and with very uninviting body posture. As for my service, I got a great welcome by Marielle, who gave me a fantastic haircut. She made me feel welcome and even engage in a kind conversation although I was a bit tired. The other two barbers, both male, were also welcoming. Had it not been for the miserable woman in the first chair, I would have given this shop five stars, and I will be back for another haircut, I just hope the miserable woman actually shows that she A: Wants to work. B: Can have a much better attitude and professional look than I saw at the shop today. read more
