This rating is for the poor customer service that i got from the owner. Three years of coming to this place and she cannot remember my face or name. She just never was welcoming to me. Coupled with her antiquated paper reservations system - which lead to mishap: called in to get a shave, beard trim and haircut. I showed up they had paired with a barber that cannot do all those things. Then, the owner comes over to me in the chair and says "in the future when u call in u need to be clear on what you want" right in front of the crowd waiting- embarrassed the heck out of me - i said "in the future maybe you pay attention to what you're doing so don't make mistakes on your lil note pad" So I liked my barber but can't f'n stand the owner. Nightmare. Unacceptable. Terrible customer service, complete lack of timeliness, and general incompetence. Worst barber experience and haircut I have ever received in my life. I went in one day for a shape-up. I called ahead to make sure they would be able to take me. Due to unposted hours for the day, they were closing in 15 minutes. They said to come anyway. I was the first in line when I got there. My wait ended up being over 1 hour. They accepted another customer who was an hour late for his appointment after me. Then they closed up the shop and cleaned up, with two barbers closing shop right in front of me. A touch up is something that I could have done myself with an electric razor and a mirror, but I was traveling. When I sat in the chair and told him I was getting a shape up he said okay and was very diligent about it, using the trimmers and multiple guards. It was taking quite a while and then he started to cut my hair on top. I told him I was confused because their sign said "Shape up -- $10, ears and neck only." He acted surprised and I guess he had completely zoned out and thought he was giving a haircut. He said he would charge me for a shape up, and stopped cutting my hair immediately, leaving it mishapen and uneven. When I went to check our he had charged me $15 and I had to correct them and point to their own sign. They argued with me at first and I had to ask them to please look at their own sign. They reduced it to $10 and I left. I would recommend that instead of this shop, you go to literally any other shop or use a pair of office scissors and do it yourself. It will look the same and will save you $10. read more

After a disaster at Refuge for men I headed here a week later. Based on recommendations I made an appointment with Jerry. What a character. Totally winning personality. He makes you feel special and really listens to you. That being said, with 40 years of experience, he isn't afraid to give his opinion which is great. He ended up offering me a delicious cup of coffee from a place nearby. The cut was flawless. Excellent attention to detail. It was exactly what I wanted. Used a straight razor to finish the back and shaved my neck and trimmed my eyebrows (old man eyebrows). This will be my go to place. Also, unlike high point, you don't have to wait a month for an appointment. They typically have openings within a day or so. read more

A class act.. Never have I felt such southern hospitality as I did upon entry into this small modern shop, with old fashioned accents. The shop is in a residential area, where at 11:30, plenty of street parking was to be had. Service 10/5 stars. Wow. When we walked in, we were greeted by the whole team. I was asked if I was indeed Seth, and seated in Charlie's chair immediately, where he had been waiting. My gf and I were offered complimentary, local coffee... excellent. I was feeling ill and was treated to a cold towel for my forehead, a shot of an old time (apple cider vinegar-based) cold remedy. MMMmm-ish. I also got a mid-way hair washing to clean up and cool down. Great conversation with the NY-expat Charlie.. Hip and stylish dude. The Cut: 5/5 I didn't see the cut happen, just the result, as I was facing the center of the shop, but the result did not disappoint. Very clean, mostly scissored, and well blended.. Came in with a mop past my nose, and left with a clean, tight style, exactly the way I described. Charlie knew what I wanted and delivered, The price: 5/5... I know I come from a different economic area of the country.. but 20$ is not an expensive cut. I'd shell out 45 to have this cut at home, and still be happy. Quick too.. in and out in 30 or 40 minutes, and never felt as though he was rushing. HIGHLY recommend these guys based on my visit.. Both experiences at MSB&M have been great! My husband grew a beard in for no shave November and we stopped by at the end of the month to have it removed. What an awesome experience that was! But make an appointment because it is a process; a royalty experience! We went back a second time so that hubby and son could both get hair cuts and they both loved them. Everyone there made us feel welcomed and is was exactly as I imagined the old time barbers shops to be; everyone chiming in on one big conversation. Thanks for being awesome. What a fantastic barber shop. Very clean, organized, classic feel. I was a walk-up customer after trying some other barber shops in the town, and I will only be returning to Main Street Barber. After giving Jerry a brief description of what I wanted done with my hair, he went to town and gave me the best haircut I've ever had. Hands down. I've never been so impressed with the quality of service and the end result. At the end of the cut, Jerry made sure that I was 100% satisfied, and told me that if a few days down the road it didn't look right for whatever reason to stop back in and he would fix it. I was visiting from out of town, and needed place to get my hair cut, since the pixie cut I had was starting to grow out too much. I normally go to barber shops rather than salons, because barbers understand how to cut short hair better than anyone. I looked for a barber shop in Richmond, and found Main Street Barber and Mercantile on yelp.com. I felt welcome right away, and was offered a mug for the coffee I was holding, which was definitely a great touch, in my book. Charlie understood immediately what kind of haircut I wanted. It looked great and very Hepburn-esque, and the price was very reasonable. I also had a great time chatting with him and everyone there. As if all of this weren't enough, I was also offered a slice of watermelon(!) I wish every barber shop did that. My best review is that Main st is not convenient for me. I have to my way out of Westham to get there. It is also not necessary designed for me. As an edgy 50, I am still 50 and not living in the fan. Its a little slow. They accept walk-ins, but their staff can be a appointed up for. Notable period of time. In 50 yrs, I have never made a "hair appt", but I found myself today seeing if there was an appt online to make an appointment (which BTW i couldnt find...). I left Michigan for 2 weeks of vacation and was in such a rush to get out the door that I didn't take the time to get a haircut. I hate to go to new barbers, not because I need my hair "just so." I mean, I ask for Navy regulation! The thing about new barbers is, I fear I just can't find the regular "neighborhood" barber experience on the first try in a strange town. So I go into "Main Street" and found just what I wanted: a good haircut and friendly banter between people who obviously like working together. He did a great job (Jerry) on my hair too. Best fades around, supportive of the Military. Don't get your hair cut around Ft Lee, make the drive here and it will be worth it. Straight razor skin fades are better here than anywhere else in the area. I go every other Saturday and the crew is incredibly friendly and upbeat. Another killer visit to MSB&M. Jerry is a master at his craft. This was my first return visit after a month and he recalled me and remembered exactly the haircut I wanted. He also backs his work.
