Oh my god this place is great for breakfast/brunch. I also had their ice coffee with milo powder and I wanted more! It was so good!! My friends and I really enjoyed having breakfast here. The tomatoes was delicious and looked like perfection, and I dont even like tomatoes, but it was so good because it was so fresh!! Everything we ordered was so photogenic as well and it tastes as good as it looks! If I ever visit sydney again and in the wooloomooloo area, I would definitely come back here

Cured Salmon, Truffle Coddled Egg, Beef Cheeks Sandwich & a Vitamin B Soda

I first ventured into John Monagu in pursuit of brunch on a particularly dreary morning in Sydney. I actually found this place on Yelp, locating it within the maps section; eliminating other possible options like Bills. After establishing it's proximity to my hotel, I decided to wander down from Kings Cross in the rain. Originally named after 'THE' John Montagu, who claimed to have invented the sandwich back in the late 1700s, this place pumps out some pretty serious brunch options & some pretty wicked sandwiches. I've since eaten here twice & on both occasions found myself gushing to friends afterwards about how much I loved the food. The menu is extremely creative & the food, pornography to the eye. I'm also led to believe that the coffee here is king, although not being a coffee expert myself, I cannot confirm or deny. On both occasions my friend & I ordered the 'Beef Cheek Sandwich', consisting of carefully cooked 12 hour beef cheeks, cheddar, horseradish, spanish onion, rocket, house glaze on sourdough ($17) & the very yummy 'Truffled Coddled Egg' ($3). Months later, my friend hasn't stopped raving about the speciality Vitamin B Soda here (Berocca, sparkling OJ, lime, mint) & I'm yet to stop obsessing over the house-cured salmon, avocado, vichyssoise, nori salmon roe on cream cheese rye toast ($16). The food here is really something special. My only complaint was unfortunately finding the front of house staff rushed & disinterested. On both visits, I found it difficult to get their attention (ie: a request for a carafe of water) & when I did, everything just felt a bit brash & a bit of an effort. Despite the lacklustre service, I will be back.

John Montagu, otherwise known as the Earl of Sandwich is known as the founder of sandwiches. So obviously, this place makes sandwiches. Just popped by here for lunch after seeing a photo of the Beef Cheek sandwich somewhere...because it looks glorious. This sandwich takes about 10 minutes to prepare, and while it's $12 for take away it's $17 to eat in. I also got a flat white ($3.50) Service is pleasant here, they're warm, friendly and happy to engage with customers. My flat white was great...silky smooth and just the right temperature. As advertised, the Beef Cheek took about 10 minutes and this sandwich is just too pretty. It's also pretty big. Overall the sandwich was tasty, but my expectations were a little too high due to how pretty it looks. That's not to say it's bad by any means, it's just not mind blowingly awesome as I hoped it would be. 7/10 Would definitely come back to try their salads and other sandwiches though.

Love being greeted at the door of a breakfast venue and it's a nice not too quiet, not too busy vibe where you'd feel comfortable pulling out a laptop or book. Food wise the bread here was really the star of my meal. Garlic mushrooms were also excellent with breakfast, but don't expect a super healthy version of eggs on toast with oil drizzled over the plate. My spoon was dirty but that's no biggie I think, and no real hassle when the service overall was good. I got the impression they're more sandwich specialists because my eggs were a bit bland and no salt or pepper was provided. I'd come here for lunch but probably not eggs again

    Iced coffee to go.

This is the only coffee shop in Sydney that required two stops in a three day tour of Sydney that included a coffee crawl. The flat whites are outstanding and the iced coffee, which has a little Milo in it is refreshing and has a good sweet umami punch from the Milo. The avocado toast was equally delicious, with fresh, ripe avocados on tasty toasty sourdough. We ended up adding poached eggs after getting the toast and they were a great addition, with the orange yolks that seem more prevalent in Australia (than the US) and make for flavorful eggs. I would recommend this place to anyone who is going to Sydney with an eye toward experiencing the Aussie coffee boom.

Really lovely service. For a place that is so popular, this hasn't gone to their head. The coffee was spot on as well. Overall a nice experience

One of the best meals I have had in Sydney and very friendly staff. I highly recommend the pork sandwich and Vitamin B Soda.

Celebrity spotted! For some reason this is a common catchcry at Spring Espresso. I have no idea…read morewhy, considering it looks like a normal cafe. Also this is usually a 2nd option for a lot of people when the line at Fratelli Paradiso across the road is too long... My experience here was really good. The coffee was excellent and the breakfast of eggs with bacon done well. Oh and I had a side of David Wenham. I dropped my menu and he was the guy at the adjacent table that picked it up for me. I said thanks and he said you're welcome. Then I did the double take and my friend was about to lose it. But luckily we both kept calm and tried to concentrate on my eggs. This is apparently his favourite breakfast place and also of many other beautiful people in Sydney due to the good coffee. So if you want a bit of sparkle with your coffee, Spring Espresso is where to go to stalk...errr....eat lol.

Each has only about 4 places to sit, in the entryway or on the pavement, and our guide book suggested picking whichever had the first free seat. We sat at Spring Espresso and had a fabulous breakfast. This isn't hard in Australia, but this one was tops for quality and the chic feel. My waffles with fruit were perfect; the coffee was heaven. The café has a very European feel in its size, decor and ambience. Even the service felt European: efficient but far from in-your-face. Very popular with the gay crowd, too.
