What followed was…read moremore than six weeks of worsening pain, swelling, jaw locking, repeated attempts to get help, urgent/emergency care, and ultimately another procedure after a different oral surgeon identified an abscess and retained bone/tooth fragments. My first week of recovery seemed normal, but around July 6 my pain began getting worse instead of better. I developed increasing jaw stiffness and swelling and was taking approximately 4,000-5,000 mg of Tylenol per day, at times with ~1200 mg of ibuprofen, to manage the pain. July 14 was my pre-scheduled postoperative visit. I had called the day before to make sure I would see Dr. Tebyanian because I was concerned about the worsening pain. He said the extraction sites appeared to be healing, placed a brown gel/medication in my lower-right socket, and mentioned possible dry socket. He also cited my age as a possible explanation for the difficult recovery. I am 40, and my age was referenced multiple times during my follow-up care as a reason I might be experiencing more pain or healing more slowly. The pain continued, and I called again on July 16 and returned on July 17. Although I happened to feel somewhat better that morning, I tried to explain that it did not reflect the significant, fluctuating pain I had been experiencing for nearly two weeks. I cried in his office during that visit while trying to explain that I had experience with doctors and pain and that this did not feel like normal postoperative pain. No additional imaging or treatment was performed. I distinctly remember Dr. Tebyanian telling me in the hallway "not to overthink it." That interaction has stayed with me because I was trying to communicate that something did not feel right, even though I happened to be having a better morning. My symptoms continued to worsen. On July 24, I called the office again and was told Dr. Tebyanian was unavailable until Monday. On July 25, I was barely sleeping, could hardly open my mouth, and had significant swelling and pain radiating through my right cheek, jaw, ear, temple, and neck. I sought emergency care from another dentist, who took an X-ray, diagnosed significant trismus/lockjaw, and prescribed steroids and a muscle relaxer. The treatment temporarily reduced the swelling and pain. When the swelling and locked jaw returned, I sought urgent/emergency care again on August 8. The emergency physician suspected a possible soft-tissue infection and recommended that I see another oral surgeon. On August 10, I saw a new oral surgeon at the recommendation of the ER Dr. During the physical exam, she identified an abscess and ordered a CT scan, which showed retained bone and tooth fragments in my lower-right socket. I then underwent another procedure to remove those fragments. I understand that complications can happen after wisdom tooth extraction and that age can affect recovery. My issue is how my worsening symptoms during post-operative care were handled. I repeatedly reported significant pain, swelling, and jaw locking, yet my age continued to be offered as an explanation and no additional imaging was ordered to investigate why I was not improving. I felt my concerns and pain were repeatedly minimized when I was actively asking for help. Based on my experience, I would not return to Dr. Anis Tebyanian for oral surgery or postoperative care. His office gets 1 star, because his front office team is friendly, professional, and responsive.

There was an adjustment on my insurance and I owed more money, and was sent two bills via post office. I, a millennial, am horrible at checking snail mail and therefore did not notice. Once I received a debt collection letter, I decided to call the office to confirm it was a real bill. I was told about the two snail mail bills, and was told they don't call or email (which would have been nice for me). The ladies I spoke to were helpful and polite as I've always experienced with this office. It was an extra few hundred with the debt collection fees which I could have avoided. If you have any insurance related surgery, always check your SNAIL MAIL!

Also, prior to being seen I was given paperwork to complete (Note: the consultation document was not included within this paperwork) it included a page to enter credit card information which I definitely did not complete. They also tried to schedule an appointment for the actual surgery and gave me two prescriptions for the surgery which I declined to schedule until I received information from my insurance company. They told me that they would get a breakdown from my insurance company and get back to me within two weeks, it has been three weeks and I have not heard from this business. Once I received my $271 consultation invoice I contacted the billing/receptionist who stated they have no idea what any insurance covers but at the time the document needed a signature it was certainly not presented in that manner. It is kind of odd being in business for so long that they have no idea what any insurance covers, even an estimate. If you what a clear understanding of what is covered CHECK PRIOR WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY and ASK PLENTY OF QUESTIONS or LOOK FOR DENTISTS, ORAL SURGEONS, ORTHODONISTS THAT OFFER FREE CONSULTATIONS or ORGANIZATIONS that are just UPFRONT, HONEST and CLEAR! There were also issues with their imaging machinery. The dental assistants had me in and out the unit at least 4 times and the machine had to be turned off and on at least two times before they could get it working and get an image.

Based upon those experiences, I would not have thought that a return visit to have the bottom two wisdoms extracted would be a nightmare. Dr. Mennitt failed to keep me fully sedated under general anesthesia such that I became fully mentally aware during the sewing of my gums. As much as the anesthesia would allow, I physically struggled to let him know that I was in great distress, and I also attempted to the best of my ability to say three times "it hurts" all the while trying to move my mouth away from the source of excruciating pain. Mennitt kept on sewing. Apparently during my struggle I bit the inside of my lower lip which was pointed out to me by his assistant when I came to. Apparently, being unable to access my mouth at this point, further sedation was rendered as I was again put back out. I do not use Novocain relative to issues of a history of abuse. I was not asked to update my medical info even though it had been over 2 yrs. since my last appt. While Dr. Mennitt was inserting the drug line into my hand and while applying the drug(s) to anesthetize me, he was not wearing gloves; the same held true for his assistant when she reached into my mouth to remove the blood soaked gauze at the end of the procedure. While I was awake, I saw no one in the room use a mask, and I can only hope these items were employed during the oral surgery. Clearly, there was a failure to follow standard of care infection control protocol. There was no way anyone who was present in the room during the surgery would not have known I was in extreme distress. Based on his online bio & decades of experience, never would I have expected this to occur. Unbelievable to me was that Dr. Mennitt showed not a modicum of decency to approach me after the surgery to discuss what had happened. During the 3 appts., the only time I've ever seen Dr. Mennitt was before the surgeries, never after. During the two prior surgeries, unlike this one, Dr. Mennitt did not deliver the anesthetic. There was no charge on the bill for general anesthesia unlike the previous bills. Mennitt has a petulant demeanor and his communication skills are wanting. Realizing that I had never exercised due diligence in investigating Dr. Mennitt's online records, I searched the Maryland Judiciary Case Search database. I discussed with my general dentist who referred me to Dr. Mennitt the records under his name. Had I been aware of those records at the time of the initial referral, I would not have used his services.

My wife has called Dr. Gluckman after hours and he is always willing to answer any questions we've got. He even came in on an off day, AFTER HOURS, ON A WEEKEND, to help with an emergency/accident we had. If that isn't above and beyond the call of duty I don't know what is.
