We walked around the house that was once used as a safe house for the underground railroad. So much history the house had. The house was turned into a musuem that included artifacts and exhibits. From upstairs you can see the ohio river where people would cross. even though the tour was just the house, the tour guide gave us pointers on where to go next. If you have time and are in the area continue by going to the rankin house which was also a safe house, you can take a tour their as well. Make sure you do the stairway to freedom!

This was enough to get me to come here and anything else was gravy. There are several showgirl type costumes from various films, such as "Red Garters" and "Here Come the Girls" (the display includes a fancy spangled jacket worn by Bob Hope); if you like skintone mesh, rhinestones and sequins there's plenty to see here, and of course if you love White Christmas, YES they have the red dress trimmed with white in addition to both blue Sisters dresses and the fan. TV screens play some of the song and dance numbers from Clooney's career. There are also displays of a few Jose Ferrer items (her first husband) and a few George Clooney costumes in the dining room on the main floor; the upstairs features a collection of items from the former Miss America, Heather French, who owns the home; a black dress I believe Clooney wore for her second marriage (or possibly her third; she married Ferrer twice) and some items from Clooney's later life. It's a tiny museum, and even if you stare at the costumes and photograph them extensively you'll only need half an hour or so to see everything. Still, if you love spangly costumes and you're anywhere nearby, you should visit. The surroundings are charming in a small Southern tourist town way and the river's right there, so you can watch the barges go by or take a stroll after looking at all the costumes. Closed Sunday but they were very easygoing about setting up an appointment; we were met by a charming woman in a 1930s outfit.

I love crafts and this festival has you covered for sure. There were no less than 5 giant tents filled with booths of all kinds of handmade goods. The admission charge was $5 and they only took cash. Due to the area that the festival is in, phone signals are hard to come by so most places only took cash. There were plenty of bluegrass bands playing throughout the day. There was a main stage and a smaller stage to keep you busy. Sheep demonstrations took place as well and there was a smaller tent with a petting zoo. The festival had a lot of cute places to stop and take pictures. Several families seemed to do their family photos while at the festival. On the downside, seating for the music was mostly hay bales. After about 30 minutes, you can feel the lack of support. Also, trying to park can be a test of patience so it's best to get to the festival early. There are shuttles to take you to the various parking lots. The music acts tended to play on both stages. For instance, a band that played on the main stage at noon played the smaller stage at 2. If you liked a band, you could see them play twice but most of the time it felt redundant. This was an ok festival overall. Lots of crafts and food as well as some decent music.

The festival celebrates all things Asparagus, since the climate and soil in this region of Kentucky is perfect for growing the vegetable beginning at 9:30 am and going until 10:00 in the evening. The town of Mayslick is lovely--a very old town, founded in 1788, but now, a sleepy little southern town, full of good people, a few antique shops, and home to the first consolidated negro school in Kentucky, begun in 1921 and closing in the early 1960's with integration, which has been lovingly restored over the years by the town and many of the alumni. The festival centers on the main street, which is closed to any car traffic. There are several vendors, one of my favorite being Homestead Greenhouses, an Amish greenhouse that offers heirloom varieties of tomatoes, fresh strawberries, Amish fried pies (cherry is the bomb!) and perennial selections that are a fraction of the cost you would spend at a local greenhouse. There is a very large Amish and Mennonite settlement that lies in the outskirts of Mayslick. Another favorite is Sunflower Sundries, from Mt. Olivet, from whom I've been buying soaps and whole grain mustards and elderberry jams from for YEARS. Jennifer Gleason, the proprietess of Sunflower Sundries is on the festival board and really loves to make the experience unique each and every year. Each year, there seems to be different vendors, so if you see something you want, get it or get a business card because they likely won't be back the next season! I was introduced to Cincinnati's Grateful Grahams at this festival, a totally delicious vegan graham crackers made in small batches by a gal here in Cincy, that I now have delivered in my Green Bean Delivery box each week, and I've gotten beautiful handmade pottery, hand made upcycled children's clothing from a woman in Frankfort, even tupperware. You just never know, so do bring some cash! The food vendors are fantastic--local pork and beef farms, and of course, ASPARAGUS!!! A variety of enticing offerings from grilled or fried asparagus and the "tasting room" sponsored by the festival has all things asparagus on the menu, including ice cream, soup, quiches, etc. Whatever your little veggie loving heart desires, all served up by some of the most welcoming folks I've ever met. Don't forget to hit Flat Fork Pork for their pulled pork sandwich, one of the best pork bbq's I've had in sometime. There is an annual art show, housed in a gorgeous old church in the center of town (you can't miss it!) has entries from local artists that depict Asparagus in all mediums, some works are for purchase, others not, and there is a voting booth where you can submit your choice for the festival favorite. Two bandstands and a variety of musicians performing--sometimes it's gospel, sometimes it's covers of country and rock tunes, but I've been lucky enough each year to stick around for Karly Dawn Higgins & Sarah Wood, two instructors from the Cowan Creek Mountain School of Music who are ultra talented gals playing original mountain tunes and they really make the festival even more special for me. You can take a tractor ride to the Burwall Farm where you can pick your own asparagus, meet the new baby chicks and experience an informative Q & A with the farm's owner, talk with the extension service about local asparagus, sample recipes and give your thumbs up or "nay". Remember, it's only held one day, on the 3rd Saturday of May, so make your plans for 2013!

You can get a mixed drink or non-alcoholic drink and visit before the show with friends. There are no bad seats here. Prices are very reasonable for shows. There are discounts for Seniors and Students. This building is beautiful and clean. I will keep attending plays here. They have the best actors and singers. Maysville is a lovely place to walk around. There are beautiful murals painted on the floodway. Also several great places to dine. You will not be disappointed if you come to a play. I am already looking forward to the Christmas play. This is approximately an hour and a half drive from Cincinnati. Cincinnati has nothing up on this place.

Our host told us that this gallery is more like a hobby for them, to help display local artists and their some of their own "natural" findings but also bring more art to downtown Maysville, KY. It's been open for a couple years now and with all that said, it sounds like they'll be around for years to come. So, what do they display. As you probably guessed it's a lot of minerals, carved natural and unadulterated stone and gems in animal forms. Some 3" and others an impressive 33". Another guess of yours is that they're expensive, and you're gain correct. Prices for these exquisite pieces range from $100-$4,000. Minerals not your thing? They also have framed bugs and butterflies averaging around $50. You're welcomed by those when you first walk into the gallery. Hand painted scarves from England, watches made from wood, prints from Cincinnati artist Ken Swinson, decorative pocket knives by William Henry Studios, hand painted Kashmir boxes and coaster sets, cuff-links, scented candles, etc, etc. Oh, and jewelry! There's a lot of jewelry here, the most impressive to me were the pearls they had. They had your "regular round white" pearls, as my ignorance describes them, but my newly educated self can say they also have tahitian black pearls and coin pearls. Yes, they're pricey, but very beautiful: necklaces, bracelets and earrings, all under protective glass. Jewelry adorns all the walls and behind minerals is this gallery's second prominent feature. I think they also do custom bridal rings as well. Our host was very hospitable and was able to explain all the pieces on display, never pressuring a sale. I'm personally not into minerals and jewelry but it was nice seeing the variety on display, including wood prints and some paintings. Simmons Farm was just what we were looking for. We were looking for a quieter farm with u-pick…read morepumpkin, and a few activities. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Melissa Simmons. This included welcoming us to use one of their sanitizeed carts. After telling her this was our first visit to their farm, Melissa introduced herself, she then told us about the farm and the activities. Our first stop was the pumpkin patch. Melissa told us that if we were lucky we may still find blue pumpkins. These are "robin's egg blue Cinderella pumpkins." We carefully scoured the pumpkin patch for them to no avail. It looks like we were too late to find one. We did find some awesome orange and green pumpkins, orange pumpkins, a few white pumpkins, cushaw squash, and an assortment of small and large gourds. Activities are well spaced out. There are seasonal favorites such as a corn maze, hayrides and cutouts. Maps are available for the corn maze if guests are worried about getting lost. For 2020, hay rides are priced per person, with only one family in the wagon at a time. One unique activity is a giant trebuchet. Guests may pay to launch pumpkins from it. There is a play area with spaced out activities for younger children. Visitors are welcome to walk around the farm. They have sheep, chickens and rabbits. There is a creek behind the corn maze. Complimentary U-pick raspberries may be snacked on while visiting. Picnic tables are available to use. Prepackaged snacks are available for purchase. Some farm fresh goodies such as eggs and jam were also available for purchase.
