Furthermore, as an EA he is a Federally Authorized Tax Practitioners and a select few who can represent people before the IRS. Horrific experience with John Sheeley. He cost me thousands of dollars in late filing penalties and seems to regularly deceive his clients as to his status on their returns. Reading over these Yelp reviews, the most generous interpretation I have is that he has a backlog of several years of returns that he is working on. However, I have to wonder if it isn't some sort of grift. I followed up with John via email and phone several times a month for over half a year, and each time John either assured me that he would submit my return within the month, or he would occasionally come up with dog ate my homework type excuses. Because this was my first year filing the particular kind of return I needed to file, I was hesitant to switch course in the middle of the year, and I was hopeful that John would get it together. He had no intention of getting it together, and if I hadn't Googled his name and found these Yelp reviews I would have never realized that his unprofessionalism with me was part of a larger pattern of behavior. I have been with John since January 2023, paying every month $500 and seven months later ZERO work has been done! All he has given me this entire time are excuses and empty promises. This is his profession and the least he should be capable of is time management and getting taxes done on time! It's very clear that he knowingly take clients money with the hopes that they won't follow up with him on anything and that they'll believe all the lies he tells them. When in reality he does nothing and only responds to emails when things are already past due just to lie and buy himself more time. To begin, he was late with my 1099s. After trying to chase him for two weeks, I decided to do the work on my own. His response to this was that I didn't need to do that because it's his job, yet if I left it up to him, would it have ever gotten done?! We were already 2 weeks late and all I heard from him consistently were broken promises and that he was "busy".  Secondly, when I needed to set up payroll for my new employee, it took him three months to make it work. The only reason this was complete was because we had to constantly check in to make sure it even got done. Then the day that payment was supposed to come, nothing! After a lot of mistakes, many upset phone calls and emails it finally got done and not on time!  Next, in April I asked about filing my taxes for 2022. His response was "I will send you all documents by the end of the week". End of the week comes and goes, I didn't receive one thing from him! It was obvious at this point that my taxes were very late so I asked him to file for an extension. He refused to file my extension due to "natural disasters" such as a winter storm in California. I knew this wasn't a real reason not to file an extension and i just wanted to be safe so I asked him again but he didn't want to do it. After all of this I still had to beg and plead with him several times to finish my 2022 taxes. All the while he knew I was expecting a baby and that my due date is in early August and that this not being done was causing me a great deal of stress. I still needed to know how much I would owe and wanted this to be done before the baby came so I could have a smooth delivery without this weighing heavily on my mind, yet today is July 27th and not only are we not done with my taxes from 2022, he never even sent me a full list of unrecognized expenses from that year! We have exchanged 102 emails since April 2023 and NONE of the work has been done! I asked for a full refund and of course I am being ignored. I needed to find a new accountant and pay a lot of much money to clean this mess. I see a lot former clients with negative reviews (similar circumstances). This guy is a SCAMMER, LIAR AND CRIMINAL! Previous reviews of John simply stringing you along, saying that he is doing the work, and not following through are completely factual. Every response is "Very busy, will get to it tonight." Strung along for literally years. I was actually told by an IRS agent to find another accountant, as they looked through my history and found that he never filed my taxes for previous years when he said that he did. Supposedly pro guy, never produced results. Went to H&R Block, they completed my taxes in an hour. I'd advise others to do the same. read more

All talk and no action. I submitted my personal tax returns over a month prior to the 4/15 deadline. I was informed that they were not complicated and straightforward. Mr. Sheeley had promised me numerous times that my taxes would be submitted on time with no extension needed. I called and emailed him every day during the last week before the 4/15 deadline. He broke his promises and had to file for an extension. Even after the extension, there was no evidence that he was working on my file. On 4/22, I found a different accountant who completed and submitted my tax forms one week later. Bottom line: Mr. Sheeley is unreliable and unprofessional. Do not waste your time. Reader, if you are here to peruse John's reviews before making a decision, you are already more diligent than I should have been. John was recommended to us by a friend as we were looking for a new accountant. At first he was very responsive and sounded quite knowledgable over the phone. However, as we approached Tax Day, things started to slip rather dramatically. Even though we submitted all our tax info on March 28 (12 days earlier than his Apr 10 deadline to ensure completion by Tax Day), he was always "busy" or "working on it" whenever I called to ask when our taxes would be completed. This pattern continued until literally the afternoon of Tax Day, at which point I insisted he file an extension. After claiming to have filed the extension (never saw any evidence of it), he assured me they would be completed in a few weeks. Fast forward to mid-June and still no sign of our tax returns. I e-mailed and called several times with no response. Having no choice, I e-mailed to say we were taking our business elsewhere. At that point John was very responsive and promised he would get them done within 10 days. The morning of the 10th day he e-mailed to say he was "on target". That day passed and nothing materialized, so we went to another accountant, who completed our taxes within 2 weeks. As suspected, the tax extension requests were never filed, so we had to a pay a (modest) penalty to the IRS and state tax commission. Several people (including my friend), have said they have had a positive experience with John. Sadly we are not among those happy few. It stuns me to see how many people had the same experience we had, and I'm at a loss to explain his truly bewildering behavior. In short: avoid. read more

I'm surprised at the negative reviews. I've been using John for over 15 years. Year in and year out he has helped me thru some complicated situations. I echo several other comments on this thread. Our firm engaged John over 1 year ago to file back-taxes (no activity) for our US corporation. He has done literally NOTHING on our file since we engaged him. When I follow up with him he promises to deliver next week. He has been totally unprofessional in his dealings with our firm. I heard about John on Thumbtack and called him up. He was quick to respond and answered all of my questions. He directed me to a portal online where I could submit my tax documents. I posted our documents and sent John an email to make sure he had everything he needed on the portal. He promised to review it and let me know. About 6 weeks went by between when I posted our documents to the portal and when I sent a final email letting him know that we had found another route for completing our taxes. In that time, I never got a response on whether he needed additional documents. I made it clear to John that we were in the middle of applying for a home loan, the only document our lender needed to process the loan was our taxes. My interactions with John lasted from February until March 28th. In these weeks, I sent him a couple emails. He made it clear that he was swamped with work, which I understand. I communicated that if he was too busy to complete our taxes, I wouldn't begrudge him if he turned away our business. I just needed to get our taxes done for the loan to process asap. He would insist on doing them, promise them by a date, and then not deliver. This happened at least twice, if not more. It ended with me sending an email that we had found another way to complete our taxes. I never got a reply from John. read more
