Both this dentist and a dentist I know in France confirmed that my upper right and lower right molars needed extraction. The estimate included extractions, a bone graft on the lower right, and an implant. However, there was visible movement in the upper implants. When implants in one arch are unstable, it is clinically important to fully evaluate the cause and structural stability before proceeding with new grafts or implants in the opposing arch, as bite force, alignment, and overall occlusion affect long-term outcomes. Despite this, the plan focused on moving forward with the lower extraction and graft. This is a family-run practice. The dentist's wife manages the front desk, and his daughters serve as assistants. While there is nothing inherently wrong with a family practice, I found the level of professionalism concerning in a surgical setting. During a root canal on the upper right molar, one of his daughters assisted. The office did not have hands-free suction equipment, and she repeatedly failed to suction properly while the rubber dam was in place. At one point, she sprayed me directly in the face with water. When I questioned whether she knew what she was doing, she responded sarcastically rather than reassuringly. Nitrous oxide was not available in the office. After the procedure, I was asked whether I was on antibiotics, although none had been prescribed. I had to ask the front desk why no antibiotics had been issued. When I expressed concern, the dentist reacted by yelling and slamming a door. I was given no written aftercare instructions, no explanation of expected pain levels, and no guidance regarding the gauze placed after the procedure. As the anesthesia wore off, I experienced significant pain. I emailed the office multiple times asking about the gauze and received no response. The practice operates out of three offices, and it was extremely difficult to reach anyone by phone. When I raised this issue, I was told, "You'll get used to it." I chose not to return and instead sought a second opinion. The contrast was significant. The second dentist provided written aftercare instructions, prescriptions for pain management, an ice pack, and a follow-up call the next day. When I returned with discomfort, the area was evaluated, cleaned, sutured properly, and reassessed. I was also advised that no bone graft or implant work should be performed on the lower jaw until the upper implants are fully evaluated by a specialist. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Portland City Dental. Surgical dentistry requires careful sequencing, proper equipment, professional conduct, clear communication, and structured aftercare.

All went well so far and when I went to my next appointment to have the permanent crown installed I had to reschedule because it was not there due to bad weather. I totally got that with no worries, things happen. Next I was rescheduled and that's where things started going downhill for me. When I got to the new appointment to put on my permanent crown I was in a lot of pain. They were very busy at the time and were pretty dismissive of my insistence that something was wrong. I would have gladly rescheduled and paid for an.x-ray, but instead I was told it was coming from the tooth behind the one they were working on I skeptically took their word on it as well as the antibiotics to clear up the infection. Fast forward another three weeks and I was in excruciating pain. Dr. Cook finally got me in for a x-ray only to find out that I needed to have a root canal on the same tooth that they put the crown on. I was told multiple times before the root canal that they would most likely replace the crown that they just installed for not listening to me. I was pretty appalled when, at the conclusion of the root canal, I was told that it would be left fine filled with filler. Being that I just had a root canal I was not going to argue. Now I am not totally off the hook on my end. I withheld from paying for the last part of the bill with them because the work was not finished. In my line of work if I were to install a new part without addressing the underlying issue and had to destruct the new part when the customer came back to have the underlying issue addressed only to fill it with cement that does not even match the texture or finish there would probably be some issues. I would either replace the part or compensate or discount them for the altered new part. Same concept should apply here, but it obviously did not or I would not be waisting my time writing this.... It has been nearly 2 years now since this occurred and I never once got even a phone call asking why the balance was not being paid. Now they just sent me to collections with no phone contact or even a certified letter. I have no problem paying what I owe, but again I will always feel that the work that I originally went there for has been completed. Long story short, I paid for a new crown and ended up with half a crown and a bunch of filler all because my concerns over the pain that I was feeling was dismissed. I do not think that doing a root canal on a new crown in 3 weeks is a normal thing.

Months passed, she never called me back. She finally called me and told me that the insurance company will not accept the claim. So, I called the insurance company and inquired about the issue. I called the secretary back and told her what the insurance company said., asked her why she lied to me, and told her that I would not have gotten service from them if I knew I had to pay for it in cash. She HARDLY apologized and told me that all she can do is reduce my bill by 50%. This dental company is THE MOST unprofessional company I have ever dealt with in 30 years. The first dentist I found was close to my office, and within my insurance network, but the experience was wretched. I asked around, and my father recommended Dr. Spathas' office. Although Dr. Spathas was not within my insurance network, they explained that they have a very fair and moderate billing system, so I took a chance and scheduled a visit assuming that I would only need to pay a small premium for an out-of-network visit. It turns out that Dr. Spathas' billing is on par with my network, so my insurance paid 100%. This means that Dr. Spathas' billing practices are reasonable, and not inflated. More importantly, my experience at Dr. Spathas' office was nothing short of excellent. I received first class treatment from Dr. Spathas and his staff. The doctor was on time, and not rushed at all. He spent over an hour with me, discussing my needs, and paying close attention to my concerns. During subsequent visits, the doctor remembered me, and recited some of the issues that we discussed previously. I got the feeling that Dr. Spathas truly cares about the quality of patient care. So far, I have had 3 visits with Dr. Spathas, and I have been pleased with the service, the attention from the staff, and with the doctor's treatments. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Spathas to anyone looking for a new dentist. The doctor's office is always clean and quiet, and the doctor is gentle yet competent. Note: I hesitated to give this provider five stars.
