I remember seeing Johnny Was in Santa Monica but had never been in, so while shopping at the Gardens I popped in. The patterns were bright, cheerful and hippie-bohemian chic, and the fabric was high quality silky to the touch. Loved the vibe. The prices were an appropriate price for the quality. Bohemian Chic. If that's your vibe, this is your store! No one does California Boho like Johnny Was. Clothing for women, not just teens. After discovering them online during the pandemic (they make masks in their various prints that are absolutely beautiful) I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit two of their brick & mortar stores while in Palm Springs. The boutique on El Paseo is bright and cheerful, just like their fabrics;the outside adorned with hundreds of butterflies painted on the white walls. Inside you will find: - long velvet maxi dresses with embroidery and sheer lace - floral midi dresses with asymmetrical hems - tunics in sophisticated prints - warm cashmere sweaters - pants ranging from velvet flares to printed leggings & everything in between - luxurious silk robes with floral prints, butterflies and embroidery - swim wear in their gorgeous prints; cover-ups, too - accessories like items for your desk, handbags scarves, jewelry - the prettiest face masks anywhere! While my style has expanded throughout the years and I wear many "looks," the inner hippie in me just loves the long, flowing clothing and all of the extra details that make it next level. Whip stitch borders, embroidery, butterflies, floral prints, patters that have a bit of Asian influence. It's what makes Johnny Was stand out and the brand so valued and recognizable. I want to update my customer service review. I called corporate customer service for the third problem that I had when my birthday email had somehow disappeared ! When I called to see if they could resend it it got the usual comment sorry, there is nothing we can do. After I had a small hissy fit she said she would try to retrieve it and resend it but no guarantees. Well today, on my birthday it showed up in my email. Finally they made something good happen. If I could give zero stars I would. I'm not blonde or blue eyed. I'm Filipino. I own 7 silk kimonos and 4 sets of PJs from this store. All bought online. The sales person that approached me was very snotty and rude. And one of the younger sales person looked me up and down. I may have purchased an item or two but the service turned me off so much I may not even purchase another item from Johnny Was again. Do better. Do not discriminate. read more

I have been a loyal patron of Johnny Was for over 20 years. Was so happy when our local store opened years ago and have spent a lot of money there. They use to have such professional, caring, courteous sales people who made you feel appreciated. Now they have people with no personalities that look to you as a nuisance for shopping. I will NOT be shopping at this location. Will stick to online and /or Fashion Island in Newport. My experience was so bad today that I might just stop all together. Anytime I'm shopping or dining on El Paseo with a female friend I'm guaranteed to get dragged into this store. The fashion focuses on luxury Bohemian. It's all very beautiful and well made with a nice mix of vintage and modern pieces. You'll find hand stitching, luxurious fabrics, and quality detailing throughout. Johnny Was embraces the California lifestyle in a way that's reminiscent of what Tommy Bahama did for linen shorts and Camp shirts. Definitely not a bad thing, and honestly it fits in really well with the Palm Desert vibes. Maybe one day they'll start selling Coconut Shrimp. I have a feeling this store is going to make a killing during Coachella Fest. The employees are all very happy, helpful and thankfully not aloof like many of the other boutique employees on El Paseo. I'm familiar with prices as purchases normally end up going on my credit card. It's reasonable considering the quality you're getting. While it might not be for me, the ladies seem to love Johnny Was and it makes them happy so it makes me happy, that's worth every penny to me. I loved Johnny Was, I was always greeted with a warm welcome when Jackie worked there, she was very helpful and accommodating. Now the environment is cold and all about business. Now you get those patronizing smiles just to get a sale. Wasn't very happy w my first trip to Johnny Was in Palm Desert. Drove here specifically on our out of town trip only to find the store closed earlier than stated on yelp. Arrived at 6pm and it was closed (see photo). I feel it highly unprofessional to either close earlier than ur hours state and or have your yelp hours and info incorrect or not up to date. I'll try the one in Palm Springs tomorrow but I will call to confirm hours beforehand. read more

I went to exchange an item that was on sale and at first the assistant manager Citlalli Van Dordt said she couldn't return item because it was a sale, sale. She gave me the number to customer service which I was unable to reach and while waiting on hold she said she would exchange for me which was above and beyond my expectations.
