Was really looking forward to trying their famous shrimp parm and roast beef sandwich, but was unfortunately quite disappointed and underwhelmed. The shrimp parm was quite flavorless and nothing special at all, which is definitely not worth the $10+ for the roll. The roast beef was just okay, with the highlight being the generous thick slice of cheese; the hero would've been even more delicious if they were a bit more generous with the onions. The gravy was a tad bit too sweet, which can be easily fixed by just increasing its saltiness. Overall, spent around 28 bucks for two mediocre sandwiches, which was unfortunate for it had so much potential. Crispy bread, fresh delicious roast beef with mozzarella, then that gravy to die for is amazing ! In the past while you wait online for your sandwich, they give you a fried shrimp dipped in their amazing sauce. This is how they get you to order their shrimp parm and it's totally worth it. I'm willing to have cheat day everyday and use my calories and fat consumption on roast beef and shrimp parm. This is how good this place is. I traveled 2 hours from Queens, taking 2 subways, the ferrry and a bus to try the roast beef, mutz, gravy and onion sandwich from this place and it was totally worth it. Definitely up there with John's on Stillwell and Fiore's in Hoboken for the best italian roast beef sandwiches in the area. Just be warned if you get there around 2 or 3 on a school day you'll have to fight your way through swarms of kids getting out of school in the area, but it's definitely worth knocking them out of the way, lol. read more

While visiting my cousin who lives in Staten Island, he suggested we try John's Famous Deli because "they have the best roast beef sandwiches in New York". I am not a big roast beef fan, but i'm always open to trying something new, so why not. The deli is small, and not the most attractive place, but one thing that stands out when entering is the big hunk of cooked roast beef (not cold cut style) on the slicer. The options for ordering a roasting beef sandwich are in roll or hero form - I opted for the roll. I don't believe you have much options for the sandwich but it comes with onions and fresh mozzarella and then they put the sandwich back in the oven to melt the cheese. The final topping and probably the most important ingredient is the sauce they put on in the end. When you look at the sauce in the pan and the guy behind the counter scooping it up, it really looks like tar or a pot of italian coffee..... What to expect when eating the sandwich - the meat is tender, the taste is flavorful and the sauce is awesome.... You gotta try this place! This is a very small shop on a nowhere block without a parking lot. Totally surrounded by what look like residential homes. I wanted an Italian sandwich, but it's not on the board. When I tell them what I want, they say "the godfather" and tell me what's in it. I'm in and off they go. As I'm waiting they hand me a fried shrimp to try and its awesome. If you like shrimp parm sandwiches, you are probably missing out not going here. To me, that sounds disgusting. So sandwich is made pretty quick, I go l/t/o and ask for oil and vinegar. That's where my major complaint comes in. My sandwich took a bath in balsamic vinegar. As in, when I went to eat it 10 minutes later the bread had gone soft and wet from so much balsamic. First time I gave them a tip they yelled at me. He looked at the amount and yelled to his dad/boss "Some Tip!" and his dad or boss mocked it with "Some Tip!" and I was ashamed. The next time I was there I decided it must be some type of slang in some other language. Then the final time I was there I found out they yell "Subway!" as a tradition because it notifies the rest of the staff that they're not stealing from the register, and that the tip is "subway money." So this place is not at all vegetarian friendly, but it was the only restaurant within walking distance and quite literally across the street from where I was staying, so I had to come in here when I needed a quick bite or morning coffee. But for vegetarians that are cool with not eating at all healthy, they do have some nifty options, and my favorite is this small side sandwich whose name escapes me (useful, yeah? You can log out and click "useful" again), but it's basically a fried cheese sandwich. If I had to describe it, I'd say it tastes like a mozzarella stick - but it's a sandwich. It's also cheap, and they give you some marinara dipping sauce to go with it. It might be the most artery clogging vegetarian sandwich possible, but it was still pretty excellent. The roast beef is so good at John's Deli that it's the only thing I ordered the first dozen times I was there. I recommend getting the roast beef with onions and getting the gravy on the side. The onions are nice big pieces and they give you a lot of them. The gravy is black and delicious. Everything I've had at John's Deli is excellent. The shrimp parm was great. Nice big pieces of breaded shrimp. The fried ravioli's are addicting and the potato croquettes are top notch. The staff is very friendly and often offer samples of the food to entice you to order something besides the amazing roast beef. If you leave a tip in the jar all the workers will shout out "Thank you Subway", which is believed to have originated from the original store in Brooklyn, were tips served as subway fare. Nothing less than 5 stars for a blue collar old school deli. When you're indecisive they will throw a sample at you to help make a decision. Whether its a potsticker, a croquet or a shrimp with sauce etc.. The hot roast beef with the special gravy, cooked onions and melted fresh mozzarella is amazing. Get the gravy on the side because it is salty and you can control how much you put on. I also recommend the fried shrimp parmigiana hero. The sauce has a little kick to it. If you get these on a roll you will get more roast beef than on a hero I noticed. They usually put these sandwiches in a pizza oven before served. In the morning during the school year it is packed with high school kids but they usually cater to other people first. I sometimes work in the area. Most kids order cream cheese with bacon. It seems to be popular but I'll stick with the fresh perfect potatoes and egg on a toasted roll in the morning right out of the pizza oven. One time just before they closed we went in and they gave us free penne with vodka sauce with our order. Delicious! I don't think they make anything that isn't perfect. It's all about the black tar motor oil-esque gravy. The Roast Beef Hero with onions and fresh mozz is the way to go. Get the motor oil gravy on the side and dip the sandwich in it. Add some potato croquettes to your order and you have some more items you can dip into that gravy. They also make fried ravioli's and mozzarella in carozza which is delicious as well. The staff is very cool and will hook you up with a sample if you are not sure what you want. They make shrimp parm heroes on Wed and Friday as well which are also excellent. If you put a tip in the tip jar the workers yell out "Thank you, Subway!" - Want a history lesson? (from their site) There were this group of wise-guys that came in to eat all the time. They were all dressed up and the smell of Old Spice and Paco Raban cologne would take over the store. One day they came in and one of the men said to me: "When I put money in the bowl say: "Subway!" I asked as an innocent, naive guy what that meant. He told me in the early fifties if you gave a deli man a nickel before he made you a sandwich the man would bang on the counter to show his boss he wasn't stealing, make the sandwich and use that nickel to take the subway home. The Italian bread is a bit thick for me - I have them scoop out most of the inside, I have had all 3 sandwiches this way and they are just awesome. The Penne Vodka is okay, way too much sauce and pasta is overcooked - not my favorite item on the menu but not super terrible. It is right next to Port Richmond HS, the street it is on is narrow but there is a parking lot (huge PLUS). Its a DELI and is SUPER small so don't expect to stay and eat unless its a nice day weather wise - there are some small patio tables along the side of the building in the parking lot. I went in the summer time and there was no line. I got the roast beef which was really good. Get the gravy on the side so you can pour the gravy on and then dip it as well. I couldn't get enough of this gravy. I also had the chicken parm and fried ravioli which were both really good. Both sandwiches had fresh mozzarella and had great flavor. I wish the meat were just piled a little higher. If it was then it would have been a definite 5 star. This place is what makes New York food great. Worth the trip if you aren't from Staten Island. Closed Sunday's (the owner deserves time with his family too guys). I usually get the shrimp parm (crispy, good cheese, great sauce) or the Roast Beef (best Roast Beef in the 5 Boros. Accepting nominations for competitors). The place makes everything fresh, has as diverse a clientele as it can get, parking in the back, and really great group of guys behind the counter. I can't recommend this place enough. Even the teenagers (usually the most annoying part of any eating experience) are respectful here and clean up after themselves. Stepping in here and chatting with the table next to you while you wait for the huge awesome sandwich is enough to make it feel like there are still some gems of old New York to find. read more

So I happen to catch the sign outside the deli one day while driving by. It said 'hot roast beef', and I thought hmm sounds delish. Then I read the reviews of this place and their very NY story and decided I had to try it out. So I went one quiet afternoon just before closing, and had placed the order by phone so just had to pick up. I asked for the sauce on the side and glad I did. I imagine it would've been a soggy mess otherwise. By the time I was done, so was the sauce. Order it with onions, they heat the sandwich in the oven and the mozarella is ooey gooey. You dip it in the sauce and enjoy a piece of heaven. The sauce is thick, black, beefy, and a perfect compliment to the sandwich. I happened upon John's today when I was at an estate sale around the corner and needed some cash. While I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the ATM, I saw a guy eating what looked like an amazing chicken parm. After I finished my business, I high-tailed it straight back to John's for a parm of my own. They seemed to do a lot of business and had a lot of regulars, which is a really good sign. The menu has all of your gluttonous classic Italian sandwiches, a variety of fried things, cold sandwiches, and amazing mashed potatoes (or so I eavesdropped.) Lots of people were ordering the shrimp plate. If I am back in the hood, i plan on trying the roast beef. The roll on which my sandwich was served was absolutely perfect, and quite possibly, the best part. It was hot and crusty on the outside and soft inside. The serving of chicken was big, two breast for a roll and it was smothered with tons of sauce and a heap of mozzarella. The portions are really generous and the hero would be a 2 meal ordeal.
